UDC is advancing the interests of the breed by educating members about working ability, conformation, temperament, health, breeding, training and maintenance of the total Doberman, sound in mind and body. The UDC encourages its members to participate in a variety of activities for which the Doberman is suited, including Agility, Conformation, Drill Team, Guide Dog, Obedience, Ring Sports, IPO, Search & Rescue and Therapy. 3 From the UDC President Leslie Carpenter The days are getting longer. Crocus and daffodils are emerging from their winter sleep, and those of us who enjoy our dogs in outdoor sports are anxious for outdoor training to resume. Activities in the UDC are also stirring! IDC Weltmeisterschaft UDC is a member club of the IDC (International Dobermann Club), and as a member club, our qualifying members can compete in the IDC Weltmeisterschaft (Working Dog Championship). For the first time since 2014, the UDC will be sending a team to the IDC WM. This event, considered the world championship IPO event for working Dobermans, will be held in Slovakia May 5 and 6, We are excited to announce that member Monica Anthony and her Doberman C-Amos vom Haus Mann will be attending as a representative of UDC. The qualifying period is open until March 11, 2018, and we are aware of at least one additional UDC team that is attempting to qualify at the time of this writing. The UDC offers a $500 stipend and reimbursement of entry fees to all competitors, but this trip is very expensive, so our club has also set up an official fund-raising site for the 2018 competitors at All proceeds raised from the official site will be distributed evenly among all qualified competitors attending the event. Please consider donating what you can to our world teams so that they can concentrate on training instead of fund raising. If every UDC member donates just $10, our 2018 fund could grow to $3,600! UDC National Specialty and IPO Championship The UDC national is just around the corner. It will be hosted again this year by the Mid-Central Working Doberman Club at the state fairgrounds in Sedalia, Missouri. The show site is beautiful, and the host hotel is very dog friendly, with all accommodations needed for a club our size. With three conformation shows and three obedience trials and our Doberman IPO Championship, this event will be worth traveling for! It is a great time to learn more about our Dobermans and to see the dogs we see in our magazine and on Facebook up close and personal. Entries are now open. Visit the UDC website. Go to our website at for up-todate information about the event and a copy of the premium list. Entries for regular UDC events close at 12 p.m. CST, Monday April 2, Even if you can t attend, please consider supporting our national event by donating to the trophy fund or purchasing an advertisement in the official catalog. Rules for each event can be found in the manuals: about-udc/udc-rules-and-regulations/. Bylaws Revision. By now you should have received a ballot in the mail requesting approval of administrative changes to our bylaws. The UDC is incorporated in the state of New York, and recent changes to New York law have necessitated a review and update of our current bylaws. The current bylaws are available in Chapter 2 of the UDC Administration Manual. The ballot mailing contains the modified language. Please take time to review the changes and send your vote to approve the bylaws changes. The changes recommended by your Board are minimal changes required to keep our club in compliance with New York law. Nominations and Elections. UDC member and Board member Tammy Marshall Weldon and her committee worked hard to develop a strong slate of nominees for officers and directors for Please take some time to view the biographical information of our Board members in the Members-Only section of the website: com/bod/nominationsbios2018.pdf. New UDC Car Decals Available. In other news, the UDC Board has authorized production and sale of new UDC car decals. These decals, designed to be more weather resistant than previous decals, are very attractive, displaying the UDC logo in three colors. New members automatically receive the new version of the decal upon approval of their membership. Current members can purchase the new decals here: You Can Make a Difference. Growing and building membership and programs in the club takes effort by all members. The UDC is the ONLY organization in the USA that supports the Doberman in working dog sport. Your support of our club ensures that we have a Doberman IPO championship each year, that we have a publication that promotes the working Doberman in the USA, and places high value on the character of our dogs as well as the beauty of our dogs. UDC members have been leaders in adopting and encouraging rigorous health testing for all Dobermans. There are many opportunities to contribute to club activities. If you have just a few hours each month to help out, please reach out. We need your help. Take some time with your Doberman(s) during this spring to simply enjoy the warmer weather together. Yours for Team Doberman! Spring 2018 UDC Focus uniteddobermanclub.com 3

From the Focus Editor Steve Stout Each to his own. Some people love winter and long nights. I m a day person and am happy to see spring arriving. Warmer, longer days offering more outside activity, that makes me happy. But on those rainy spring days when you are stuck inside, I hope you ll enjoy this issue of Focus. We have our first article on Dobermans participating in the 2017 LV DVG American National Championship. Our thanks to Eryn Lucas and Marie Miller for sharing their detailed view of this event. And many thanks to Shelly Timmerman of SHELLSHOTS Photography for her generous cache of great photos from the event. Hopefully we will have more stories of Dobermans in the DVG of America in the future. Thanks to our other contributors: Monica Anthony, Irene Kototov, Diane Linstrom and Ashley Stursa for sharing their experiences and insights. Congratulations to Bonnie Guzman and Porter for their great achievements as noted in our Versatility Spotlight! This issue also has our usual: club business, member club listing, breeder s directory, our president s report and, of course, Brags! Congratulations to everyone on their new titles. We hope to have lots more to list in the next Focus. Remember the 2018 UDC National is almost upon us, so finalize your plans as you won t want to miss this event. The Missouri state fairgrounds is a great venue, and this year promises to be as good as, if not better than, last year s. Be a part of it! Last, and definitely not least... Thanks to our advertisers who share their dogs and their stories with us as well as supporting Focus financially. Focus ads are seen by Doberman fanciers all over the world; there is no better place to promote you and your dogs. But to each member I wish to say that ads are not just for news and promotions. Why not place an ad to share your love of your dog with fellow members. We ve introduced special pricing for those who would like to place ads in all three issues. Just ask! Best wishes to all for a great spring. Take the time to enjoy your Dobermans! O N T H E C O V E R The featured cover dog is my very special Treasure Seeker s Asher, IPO2, WAC. We have attempted IPO3 at two different trials, but fell short both days in different phases of the trial. In these days of social media, it s easy to become discouraged when trial results are not what you hoped for, and you see other handers posting about their achievements. I also get discouraged with failures, but try to remind myself whether or not my dog achieved the title or scores I hoped for, at the end of the day he is still the same dog that I brought to the trial who loves to train with me. While winning is sweet, success is not always about winning or about the title, but rather the journey we take with our Dobermans as we reach for our goals. The win picture with Jason Bane and Al Govednik is the day that he earned his IPO2 at the 2017 UDC Fall Classic. The photo in the lower left was taken at our first attempt at the IPO3. The head-on shot is a picture of him at about 14 months, coming toward the hot blind during training. And the picture here is Asher in my backyard at about 4.5 months. 12 de ci sion/də'sizhən/noun a conclusion or resolution reached after consideration by Diane Linstrom Surge escape bite on helper Waine Singleton. Syn and Diane after passing their SASAR L3 HRD test. As those who know me well will tell you, I only make important decisions after carefully considering both sides of the situation at hand; therefore, when I decided to have my first litter back in 2015, I had no doubt it was the right thing to do. Fast forward to my bitch having her pups, and too many hopes and dreams being placed on those little beings peacefully sleeping after their first meal. I had hopes and dreams that we would make it past the first 8 weeks, hopes and dreams that each pup would become exactly what I bred them for. Our time flew by, and the pups evaluations began when they were 6.5 weeks old. My job got a little more intense as I attempted to mentally place each pup with the right handler on my puppy list. As the pups closed in on 9 weeks; all decisions had been made on who was going where. The pups each went to their new homes, the new handlers excited about their future. Surge bark and hold on helper Waine Singleton. I made the decision to hold back the purple-collar girl and green-collar boy, who would become Syn and Surge. It was a big decision as I know exactly what it takes to raise a working puppy, let alone two at the same time. It is truly double the time, double the commitment, double the work and double the hopes and dreams. Everything I did with one, I had to duplicate with the other. They were kept separate from each other (and still are with an occasional romp on the farm together) with everything being done on a rotating basis. My original plan was to keep both of them back until they were 8 months old or so, and keep the pup that excelled the most in what I was looking for. The plan was set in place and I went to work on their foundation, introducing them to everything from obedience to dock diving to obstacles to bite work to human-remains detection (HRD). I know that my main focus would be on IPO and Continued on page uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Spring 2018

Decision Continued from page 12 HRD, and dock diving for fun when we could get away. But this wasn t going to be an easy task with two dogs at the same age. I was up for the challenge. I continued my journey with each of them and in the time nearing my original plan, my decision was turned upside down when I found that both of these dogs were meant to stay with me. I could not let either one go, and at that point I most certainly was used to the idea of working both of them. When Syn and Surge were about 18 months old, I decided to go for our SASAR L3 SAR-HRD tests. It was a long, hard day of testing with tough conditions. Eight sectors later, Team Syn and Team Surge were now L3 SAR-HRD deployable K9s. The exhaustion of the day would not interfere with the sheer excitement of testing and passing such a big test with two dogs from my first breeding. As time passed, I started really looking at each of my dogs natural abilities and drives. What was each showing me? I pondered the question for quite some time. I began making a list for each of them, taking countless hours of video footage of them working in each field. More time passed and more thought went into the decisions I knew I needed to make. After much consideration, I decided to pull Syn from IPO and Surge from HRD. It wasn t an easy thing to do since I had quite literally poured hours upon hours into working each dog in both fields, hours of time on the road so that I could train with who I consider to be the best of the best in each respective field. My work with each dog was a labor of love, a hope and a dream and a passion for my breed. I pulled them respectively because each of my dogs showed me where they wanted to be. It is kind of funny to me just how loudly they showed me who they were and where they wanted to be. Syn is my search dog, she lives to work source. Surge is my IPO dog, he lives for bite work. Could each of them do what I pulled them out of? Of course. My decision was based on what each dog had a passion Syn and Diane working on a rubble pile. Syn working source in Wichita, Kansas. for. Once I figured that out, it was obvious that I had made the right decision. Now I am focusing them in the respective fields that they were meant to be in, and things just feel right. I have watched them develop from newborn puppies into the dogs they are today, and I just marvel at each of them for being exactly what I needed. Working them has been a challenge to say the least; it has been full of moments where I questioned my sanity (especially when they were young pups) and moments of pure joy as they developed into amazing partners. The one thing that I have learned more so than anything else from this amazing journey that I first embarked upon with their dam back in 2011, is to trust my intuition. Once I learned to trust my own intuition, things became clear and the relationship between myself and each of my dogs moved to a new level. 14 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Spring 2018

SAR: TRAINING FOR THE UNEXPECTED by Irene Korotev Achieving certification for a search-and-rescue team is but the beginning of the real training. Once a team has mastered the fundamentals and has proven to have the requisite skills to actually be of value in locating a missing/lost person, that s when training takes a truly serious turn. Since every missing person incident is different, it s time to train for the unexpected. Scenario-based training becomes very important in the continuing development of the trailing team. This training includes setting up scenarios in varied places such as shopping centers, playgrounds, at the lake, at schools and even at home. Mock searches should be double-blind searches with many unknown (to the trailing team) variables such as witnesses with wrong information and scent articles which are no longer pristine (handled only by the missing person). Often, a contaminated scent article (one which has been handled by a number of people, not just the missing subject) is unwittingly used by the trailing team, leading to an unsuccessful conclusion. A newly certified trailing team can completely come undone if they have not trained to look for possible solutions to the random things which can go wrong on a search. Here s a look at a few of the training elements which are standard in preparing the new trailing team for an actual search: Negative trail indication. The canine is presented with a scent article and asked to locate the start of the trail within a defined area. Since the article was collected from someone who has never been in this part of the state, the dog cannot match the article to the area. The dog is then rewarded (big party!) for doing its job, even though a matching trail was not present. Missing subject gets into a car and leaves the area. The canine will show confusion and loss of scent behavior. It may also start trailing in a manner different than normal (zig zagging clear across the road along the supposed path taken by the car, for instance.) Once again, the dog is rewarded for doing its job, even though it did not result in a find. Missing subject gets out of a car and walks on foot again. It s useful to check at intersections 16

where the missing person might have had a chance to leave the car. Area where a missing subject s vehicle is found locked, but no scent article available. The canine is scented on the driver s door along the seam, and also where he would have stepped when getting out of the car, etc. Most teams look forward to training opportunities to run single-blind trails where the search problem is set up completely by someone other than the handler. The route, distance and trail layer, also known as the runner, is unknown to the handler. Throw in unknown terrain and there are the makings of an excellent training! Should the working team run into trouble or lose the scent trail, the flanker who accompanies the team is the safety net to help the handler assess where the trail was lost and assist the team in re-acquiring the trail. Once the team is comfortable with running single-blind trails, double-blind trails are incorporated neither handler nor flanker have knowledge of the actual route, and if assistance is needed, contact must be made by radio or phone with a third person, who actually planned and set up the trail. One final element deserves clarification: The flanker is a person who assists the handler. But a flanker is much more than that. The flanker must be very familiar with the way the dog works by reading the dog s working behavior to assist the handler on the search for a missing person. The handler is totally focused on handling the dog to watch for any behavior change which could indicate a change of direction, etc. The flanker is charged with communication with the search base, keeping track of the team s location on map and compass, watching out for possible evidence dropped, dangerous obstacles and or terrain, oncoming traffic, assisting with the dog when needed and alerting the handler of any behavior exhibited by the dog which the handler might have missed. A good flanker must know how the dog works almost as well as the handler, yet be able to handle all the above while on the run with the team. This endeavor is truly a team effort of canine, handler and flanker, requiring the dedication of all. Shamus flanker, Carrie Gove, is a vital part of our team. She s also a Doberman handler in our unit. Her canine partner, Swift Run s Magic Man (aka Ruger), is in training for area and light disaster search. He and Shamus are half-brothers. Although I got my first Doberman in 1975, it was not until my second Doberman female and I stumbled into search and rescue that our lives changed completely. (My husband, Dave will certainly agree!) Dulce took to the training like a duck to water. She excelled in tracking/ trailing, but also quickly learned air scenting (area search) and evidence recovery. Later we added human remains detection on both land and water, and light disaster. Over the years, my Dobermans have trained and performed well in all those disciplines. However, trailing is by far the most difficult discipline in my opinion. Yet it is that challenge which keeps me involved and looking forward to the next day so we can try different scenarios and learn new techniques to help us become the best resource possible for the person in need. 18 Dobermans at the DVG National 2018 by Erynn Lucas and Marie Miller Photos by SHELLSHOTS Photography T he event kicked off in Merced, California, on Thursday evening, Draw Night. All competitors were anxiously waiting to make their draw to see when they would be performing the three phases of IPO. The trophy tables were full of great looking trophies that were custom made for the DVG national. Each competitor received a goody bag with all kinds of fun dog stuff as well as what their draw number would be and the itinerary for the weekend. Each judge talked about what their expectations were for each competitor. They were going to hold the competitors to the high standards befitting the level of competition. The initials DVG stand for Deutscher Verband der Gebrauchshundsportvereine, or the German Association of Working Dog Sport Clubs. This is not an exact translation, but one that is most meaningful in English. While attracting breeders of all working dogs, DVG exists for only one purpose - the training and titling of dogs of all kinds. In addition to IPO titles, DVG offers Obedience and T racking titles, providing competition opportunities for all people who love to train dogs, even the smallest of breeds. DAY 1 - TRACKING. Friday morning was bright and crisp. I am sure the competitors would have wished for a little more moisture in the preceding days, but Calfornia had a very dry November and December. Isn t that how it always goes? The tracking field was flat plowed dirt with slight rows apparent, and the wind was calm. Judge Andrea Hoskinson presided and was consistent in her judging. Kathy Gretch and Della von Luka (Idella) drew first track. The first leg, article and corner were excellent, but then Idella struggled. Eventually, she made it to the second article and indicated properly, but struggled again after that with a lot of circling. The last leg and article were good, earning the team a 74 score. Oksana Bovt with Elvis z Padoku (Nitro) drew the fourth track of the flight. The team started well, and the first leg, article, and corner were worked well. Again, during the middle of the track the dog struggled a bit but eventually found the second article which was indicated correctly. The rest of the track was well done and the last article was found and indicated. This track earned the team 85 points. 18 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Spring 2018

Thus concluded the first day of competition for our Doberman representatives. Friday night was the DVG general meeting and dinner, featuring a pasta and pizza bar. There was discussion of how Caniva is being used for trial entry forms now, and the system integrates your dog s information through Caniva and There was also some discussion about the new DVG judges who have been approved and the ones who are in the process of getting approved. DAY 2 - OBEDIENCE. Saturday was also bright and warm. I would love to complain about the weather, but these girls love the sun! The judge for obedience was Harmutt Beckmann, who is originally from Germany but now resides in Colorado. First up in the stadium work was Ann Enders with Foxfire s I Wanna Believe in the Stars (Colton). It was a beautiful picture throughout with good positioning and drive through the work. Being a national-level trial meant that the judging was more strict, and the team earned a 91 with good remarks from the judge and just minor deductions for each exercise. In the same flight was Susan Hood with her dog Lyra vom Landgraf, another team that showed a lot of drive for the work. The heeling was crisp as were the motion exercises, with good position throughout. Unfortunately, Lyra was overly excited for the retrieves and left before commands were given. She also missed the wall and became unsettled enough to drop the dumbbell, causing a major deduction in points. The team still passed with a score of 71. Following the obedience, the field was set for protection. I have been to a lot of trials at a lot of levels (although admittedly, none within the year) and have seen both helpers in trials before this. I will say that this was truly national-level pressure with national-level stick hits. The helpers brought the fight to the dogs yet still managed to safely catch them. The front-half helper was Kyle Krotter, whom I have seen many times, and the back-half helper was Weston Kester. Both are from California. The judge for protection was Klaus-Jürgen Glüh from Germany. First up for the breed was Ann and Colton. The search was done and the dog stayed in the blind for guarding, although the judged wished for more commitment. Colton showed good secondary obedience to the heel position. The escape was shown well. On the reattack and stick hits, the dog was a little rattled by the strength of the helper but stayed with him for guarding and pick up. The secondary obedience for the back transport was very good and, despite the reattack from escape, Colton did not hesitate to engage the helper strongly. The outs were shown correctly as was the transport to the judge. Secondary obedience down the field was nicely done. On the long attack, Colton stuck the long bite and outed correctly. On the reattack, he was again slightly bothered by the strength of the helper but again stayed with him. The transport was shown correctly. Overall, the team put in a good performance earning a score of 82 with a TSB rating of Vh. Susan and Lyra were the next Doberman team up, and they started well with all blinds searched. Lyra guarded the helper with power and showed good secondary obedience to the call out position. She engaged the helper quickly and forcefully on the escape, and outed correctly. She handled the reattack and stick hits well, showing strength of her own. Again, good secondary obedience for the back transport, and she went in to the helper with no hesitation. The side transport was correct as was the heeling down the field for the long attack. Lyra did not stick the bite on the first try, but came immediately back in to the helper with strength and took the pressure from the Continued on next page Spring 2018 UDC Focus uniteddobermanclub.com 19

DVG Continued from page 21 helper with confidence. The team earned a pronounced rating with a score of 88. In the next flight of obedience we had Kathy and Idella, who were partnered with a Malinois. Idella was to be on the long down first. Unfortunately, Idella was never set in the down position, and left before Kathy made it to the blind. A big deduction. Once the other team was finished with their routine, Kathy and Idella performed their obedience. The heeling was shown with good position and drive, with some crowding in the group. The retrieves were very good as well, even though Idella had had a fall from the wall a week prior. Good teamwork was shown here with all exercises in the SG rating and, despite the lack of a long down, the team earned a score of 81. In the same flight was Oksana and Nitro, who also drew long down first. Nitro stayed down during the other dog s performance, and then performed his exercises with good attitude and drive. There were just minor issues with each exercise until the retrieves coming back over the jump, Nitro hit it very hard, causing the jump to fall. That was the only major obedience deduction, and he earned an 87. All Dobermans entered worked well with their handlers and showed a lot of temperament for the work in their obedience routines. I look forward to other trials where the minor kinks are worked out as I believe all of these teams are capable of V-rated obedience. PROTECTION. After obedience, the field was again set for protection, and Kathy and Idella were up. All blinds were searched, and Idella showed good guarding and correct obedience for the call out. On the escape, she immediately went in to the helper with a good grip and outed fast. On the reattack, Idella was bothered by the pressure and sticks hits from the helper, but stayed with him. The side transport was shown without trouble. Good obedience was demonstrated on the back transport, and she went immediately to the helper with a good grip. She outed cleanly and was clean on the side transport. On the long attack, she missed the grip at first but then reengaged with the back-half helper. She took the reattack grip, but then came off the sleeve. The judge terminated the routine and Idella was allowed to win the sleeve from the helper, avoiding a negative experience. Last to go in protection was Nitro and Oksana. All blinds were searched and good guarding was demonstrated. Nitro went immediately to stop the helper on the escape, showing a good grip. He outed cleanly. On the reattack, he handled the pressure and stick hits with just a bit of growling. The side transport was very good. Again, he went immediately in to the helper on the back transport, showing a strong grip and good fight. The secondary obedience with pick up and heeling to the long attack. Nitro stuck the grip on the long attack and outed cleanly upon command. Nitro handled the reattack and pressure from the back-half helper with confidence, and the transport was shown correctly. Overall, the team earned a pronounced rating and a score of 90. Unfortunately, we could not attend the last day when Susan with Lyra and Anne with Colton would have tracked, so we can t describe those exercises. But we can report that Susan and Lyra earned a score of 80 points for a total score of 239. Unfortunately, Ann and Colton struggled and did not pass the tracking phase with a score of 52. Congratulations to the high scoring Doberman team of Oksana and Nitro with a total score of 262. Well done! 24 Tips for Air Travel with your Doberman by Monica Anthony Here are some things I learned to keep in mind for traveling by air with your Doberman: The most important first step to travelling with a dog, is to take the time to fully understand the requirements for shipping a dog. Rules will differ depending on the airline, particular flight, and time of year. Be certain that you are extremely clear on what is required so that there are no last-minute surprises at the airport Some airlines ask for a health certificate from a vet within 48 hours of travel to confirm the dog is healthy enough to travel by air. Be sure that you have all appropriate paperwork, with photocopies in multiple places. If you are traveling to an international destination look up the required vaccines and what is needed to enter the country. If traveling to different countries, consider looking up animal-welfare laws in those countries. Some countries do not allow certain types of collars, and certain dog breeds could have particular rules. I call the airline twice one week before the flight to confirm the reservations. I do this to make sure the attendants checked the file closely. Yes, I am extra careful. Talking to two different people allows me to make sure the file was correct. If you have time, consider taking your dog and the crate to the airport to do a run through. Look for dog potty areas at both airports (usually posted on the airport website maps) so you know where to go when you land or before you board the plane. 24 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Spring 2018

You can only have the small plastic water bowls in the crate, despite the size of the dog. You can buy a shipping package at major pet stores that has the two bowls, and stickers for the outside of the crate. I also found that one airline did not allow the plastic zip ties but they did allow twist ties. So again, just check with the airline. Write an emergency phone number on the crate at which you can be contacted. I put both my cell number and a number at our destination. Yes, I know that could be a personal security concern, but the risk is so small and I would rather they call me as soon as possible if there was a problem. Above: Use bungee cords to strap the crate onto a luggage cart. Left: You can only have the small plastic water bowls in the crate regardless of the size of the dog. This airline allowed plastic zip ties to secure the kennel door, but not all do. Call to get your airline s requirements. I put tags on the dog s collar with my home phone number and a local number at my destination. I also put reward above the phone numbers. Carry a leash in your carryon luggage with some kibble, towels, baby wipes, paper towels and garbage bag, light blankets and toys. Use bungee cords to strap the crate onto luggage carts. A 36-inch-long plastic shipping crate fits on most luggage carts with a small carry-on bag behind it, but anything bigger may be an issue. Be prepared to take your dog out of the crate for security to check the inside of the crate. Bring a few empty reusable water bottles in my carryon to fill up the dog's water bowls. After I go through security I fill up the water bottles to top up the dog s water as soon as we land and the crate is delivered. As you go through the airport, keep in mind that people will try to look in the crate and kids may run up to peer in the crate. So be prepared to politely deflect their good intentions. It is recommended to be very polite, but firm, with all airport personnel. You are your dog s advocate and their wellbeing is your top priority. I also recommend tipping the airport personnel for assisting me or the crate. Inform the flight attendant when you board the plane that you are traveling with a dog. United Airlines puts three cards on the dog crate that state your seat location on the plane. When the crate is loaded, one of the cards is brought to you to confirm the dog is on the plane. To be honest, the worst part of flying with a dog was watching the dog get loaded on the conveyor belt. There are no sides on the conveyor and I was terrified the dog would turn in the crate causing it to be unbalanced and come off the conveyor. I silently willed Sit! Stay! The dog didn t move and everything was fine, but I was nervous for those 15 seconds! The biggest suggestion I can make is to make sure your dog is comfortable in a shipping crate. Consider playing crate games, and take your dog and its crate to many different places to help your dog become comfortable. Spring 2018 UDC Focus 25

Preparing Your Dog For a New Arrival by Ashley Stursa Having a baby can be a very exciting and stressful time for both the two-legged and four-legged members of a household. Here are a few tips to help get dogs ready for the change. Setting boundaries/new rules We started teaching a few new rules before the arrival of our baby. For example, each dog has its own bed, and we taught them the command go to your bed. We made this a fun game during training so they all happily will run to their beds and lay down. This has come in handy during times we don t want the dogs roaming around. It can be a great safety tool! A tired dog is a good dog We did our best to maintain normal exercise for the dogs during the arrival of our baby. I took some time off from going to our local Schutzhund club. However, I asked my husband to help out with taking them for walks, playing ball, and running on the treadmill while I recovered. We also introduced the stroller ahead of time so there were no concerns with the dogs walking alongside. It is a good idea to give the dog a stuffed, frozen Kong or food-dispensing toy during kennel/crate time. Supervised time We do not leave even our most trusted dog alone with the baby. Baby gates work great for keeping dogs separated from baby during busy times. That gives dogs their own retreat space where they can enjoy a quiet break by themselves if desired. Toys I was surprised how many baby toys look like dog toys: stuffed toys, squeaky toys or balls. We have donated toys that were gifted to us that resemble dog toys. My dogs don t have toys other than what we use at training so we just avoid anything that resembles those things to avoid the dogs getting into something they shouldn t. 28 VERSATILITY SPOTLIGHT Swift Run's Warrior BH, RA, WAC, NAPWDA Certified in Police K9 Cadaver Detection, StP1, CGC Versatility Companion (VC) This issue our Versatility Spotlight shines on Swift Run's Warrior, BH, RA, WAC, NAPWDA Certified in Police K9 Cadaver Detection, StP1, CGC aka Porter. Porter, a male, was born March 16, 2008, and is owned and trained by Bonnie Guzman. Here s Porter s story, told by Bonnie. Eleven years ago, I started on a new journey with canines. I had just wrapped up 20 years of doing purebred dog rescue (Wire Fox, Smooth Fox, Lakeland and Irish Terriers, as well as Rottweilers and Whippets) and had personally fostered and retrained more than 175 dogs. I had worked in jails/correctional care as an RN for more than 15 years, and instead of taking care of inmates, I wanted to look at what I could start doing to take care of victims. That translates as helping to put criminals behind bars. I researched and strategized how to proceed, and looked at many different breeds to consider for this endeavor. I narrowed it down to Giant Schnauzer, Doberman, Dogo Argentino, Belgian Laekenois and Boxer, but ultimately decided to opt for a Doberman. I was not new to conformation rings, I had showed some Rotties and 28 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Spring 2018

Smooth Fox Terriers, so I started dropping in to the local shows and kibitzing with Doberman folks. Nancy Christensen was a wealth of information and got me pointed in the right direction. I got my first Doberman, the recipient of this award, from Swift Run Kennels in Bowling Green, Kentucky. There was much groundwork done before I even thought about purchasing a Doberman. I was put in touch with Shirley Hammond as my primary interest was historic-level remains (very cold cases, burials, archeologic, etc.). Shirley was an immense help in getting me going, even providing me with my first historic-level sources of bone chips and cremains. I will be forever indebted to her. I started training when Porter was 8 weeks old. His proclivity for historic remains was remarkable. He was able to find historic-level sources in a half-a-football-sized forested area, and actually learned his indication/alert (the dog has to not only find the scent/object but he has to have a means of telling you he found it) by the time he was 14 weeks old. The rest was history. We never looked back. Since obedience is the foundation of what all SAR dogs do, I started training with Tim Cruser, a well-known IPO GSD person, who helped me get ready for Porter s BH. Jeff Uhrlaub of Centennial Schutzhund Club was also an immense help. He, and other law enforcement officers, were willing to work/train with me on cadaver hides as well as obedience. Porter quickly earned his BH. I had aspirations for getting an IPO 1, but liability insurance for search-and-recovery (and rescue) groups/dogs usually precludes any bitework, so that was not meant to be. I was able to throw in an STP 1 though, which we had never trained for. Since I was an old AKC buff, I opted to work on a CD and threw in some rally. We were able to get two legs of Porter s CD quickly, but after that he refused to do a one-minute sit. At the fourth attempt, he downed at 58 seconds, so I figured there was a message in that and that it was time to give up title collection. Porter was first certified in human remains detection at around 2½ years and has recertified every year since that time for seven straight years in a row. The certification involves obedience, area search, vehicles, buildings, buried, water and rubble piles. The process takes three days. There are 12 hides total, and you are allowed only one miss. There are numerous negatives thrown in. After training dog/animal/people-aggressive, stubborn and quirky terriers for 30 years, training a sound-minded Doberman was a cakewalk. How I had not discovered this breed 40-plus years ago, while I lived in Germany for a few years, was beyond me. I loved my Rottweilers, but they are no match for the endurance, flexibility and nose work that the Doberman is capable of. Their commitment to scent, ability to tune out the world while searching, tenacity, flexibility and work ethic is beyond comparison to any other breed I ve watched over these 10 years. Their obedience and desire to please is remarkable. I feel so honored to own such an incredible animal as Porter. He has brought me nothing but pure joy and a touch of humor these 10 years, and he is still going strong. Congratulations to Porter and Bonnie for earning the UDC Versatility Companion (VC) title by demonstrating successful participation in a variety of activities and work suitable to the versatile nature of the Doberman Pinscher!
