3 From the UDC President Leslie Carpenter The 2018 UDC National in the history books. With three conformation shows, three obedience trials, a breed survey, and the IPO Championship, all judged by internationally recognized judges, the 2018 UDC National Specialty was an event to remember. Many thanks to Suzan Shipp, Tammy Rush, and the members of the Mid- Central Working Doberman Club for hosting the event at the beautiful Sedalia, Missouri State Fairgrounds. Special thanks go to our Director of Judges Doug Matson and his wife Jacque Matson who coordinated the IPO trial as well as the fun nightwalk Special recognition goes to UDC member Petra De Silva for coordinating one of the most successful cardio clinics ever held by the UDC, with more than 25 dogs participating in the clinic. Make sure to stay tuned for the Fall/Winter issue of the FOCUS for all details on the national event! Fall Classic UDC members Simone Jeans and Shawn Gadow have recruited their local USCA training club, O.G. Edgerton, to host the 2018 UDC Fall Classic. This experienced club will be putting on a first-class event that will be held at Wonder Lake, Illinois, within 50 miles of the DPCA national specialty in St. Charles, Illinois. Judge Lisa Little (DVG) will officiate the event. For additional information about the event, visit the website: index.php/ events/upcoming-events/2018-udc-fall-classic. Current UDC international competition rules require exhibitors who wish to represent the UDC at the IDC Weltmeisterschaft to compete at the UDC National or the UDC Fall Classic preceding the IDC event. If you are interested in representing the UDC at the 2019 IDC Weltmeisterschaft in Hungary, and you did not compete at the 2019 UDC National IPO Championship IPO Trial, you need to plan to compete at the Fall Classic. Please contact our UDC Team Coordinator Ashley Stursa, awdfteam@uniteddobermanclub.com. New Member Clubs. The UDC Board has approved two new member clubs since our last issue of FOCUS. They are Vita Nova Dobermann Club in Pittsburgh, PA and Golden West Dobermann Club in Mira Loma, CA. 4 From the Focus Editor Steve Stout This year is the 50th anniversary of many events in my childhood, some good and some bad. Seems that the older I get the more time I spend looking back. I have tons of activities keeping me looking forward, but lately I ve thought of how often we look back. Everything we do today is affected by what we ve done and experienced before, one example being training our dogs. We start off as babes in the woods, and make the most progress when we assess our past training success and failures. I was not yet a teen when Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in April Two months later, it was Bobby Kennedy. Seven years earlier, JFK was president when I was watching Popeye, and he interrupted my viewing pleasure because of some silly nuclear missile crisis. Well, last month on the anniversary of his Bobby s death I googled him, and the first image I found was this one, of JFK, Bobby and Moe together. The photo was a blessing to me because it raised me out of my funk. Seeing the two young men relaxing and smiling with a Dobe clinging to Jack made me smile. I was happy to learn our former president was a Doberman owner. Moe was a Doberman Pinscher that JFK acquired while staying at a remote ranch in Arizona, recuperating from his war injuries. Moe was his companion at that time. When Jack moved back home, he shipped the dog back to Hyannisport in a crate with a note attached to it explaining what the dog s name was and that there was no danger that Moe would bite. (Obviously Jack appreciated his dog but was not a student of canine behavior.) When Moe arrived in Hyannisport, he escaped from the crate and nipped Teddy when he tried to catch him. Ted sent a note back to Jack saying, Yes he does, I'm sending him back. I suppose it was easy for even pets to become lost in such a large family. But what does a Doberman seek? Leadership. So it came to be that Rose walked him every day, and Moe quickly became Rose s devoted companion. Of course, the anchor is not the most prominent aspect of a ship so we have only photos of Moe with the captain. (Thanks to Jane for researching Moe s history for me.) Greetings all members. Hope you re staying cool. This weather must be why they invented Dock Diving. Thanks to Traci Mulligan we have some great photos of other options for having fun and staying cool this hot, hot summer. She also gave us an article with insights into Dobermans and the WAE. Thanks also to Linda Kye and Steven Foss for sharing their community interactions. We are starting a new recurring article, Canine Chat, in which members share insights into their Doberman s personalities. Our first submissions are from Monica Anthony, Katlyn Schwarwaelder and Ashlee Taylor. I m sure all members will enjoy reading Monica s experiences at the 2018 IDC WM in Lozorno, Slovakia. UDC is proud to have been represented in this prestigious event. 4 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Summer 2018

8 Amos vs. the World! by Jennifer Taylor and Monica Anthony Compeition photos by Karolina Koc ova Posed photos courtesy Monica Anthony Doug and Jacqueline Matson with Amos and Monica during opening ceremonies C-Amos vom Haus Mann IPO3 (aka Amos, born May 7, 2010) and Monica Anthony represented the United Doberman Club at the 2018 International Doberman Club Weltmeisterschaft (IDC WM) in Lozorno, Slovakia on May 4 through 6, The IDC WM is the World Championship for IPO3 Dobermans. In order to qualify, Amos and Monica won the 2017 UDC Fall Classic in Ohio and went High in Trial, High IPO3, High Tracking, High Obedience and achieved two qualifying scores of at least 250 and 85 points or higher and pronounced in protection. The logistics of preparing a dog for any trial are daunting, but to prepare for a trip to Europe to compete requires months of planning along with the training itself. In addition to organizing the normal logistics of flights, hotel and car rental, the dog must be re-vaccinated at certain intervals before the travel (even if not due for re-vaccination) and health certificates must be obtained. After a long, snowy winter, Monica and Amos traveled to Sedalia, Missouri in April to support the competitors in the 2018 UDC National IPO Championship, acclimatize Amos to hot summer temperatures and train with John Soares. The weather reports from Slovakia indicated unusually warm spring temperatures, and European competitors arrived at the area several weeks prior to acclimatize the dogs. Although the trip to Sedalia involved a 10-hour drive each way for Monica and Amos to attend the UDC national, this preparation was crucial. Due to the high costs of staying in Europe, Amos and Monica left on April 30 and landed in Vienna, Austria on 8 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Summer 2018

9 May 1. Amos handled the flight with ease, but Monica was not so fortunate, falling ill with a sinus infection during the travel. The pair only had a few days to settle in prior to the official practice, veterinary check, opening ceremony and draw on Friday, May 4. Luckily, Monica was feeling much improved by Friday morning. Practice went well, and then it was time for the trial check-in and vet examination. The opening ceremonies were a fun and vibrant occasion, and Amos and Monica were joined by UDC Director of Judges Doug Matson and UDC Vice President Jacqueline Matson for the opening ceremony parade. Amos and Monica drew a late-morning stadium time on Saturday, and a 10 a.m. track on Sunday. The weather was much warmer than average for Lozorno, with no rain at all during their entire stay in Slovakia. The stadium is located in a small village, and the event was very popular with local residents who would come and watch the competition with their families. Several times during the competition, loose village dogs and children would happen onto the field near the long-down dogs and during protection routines. The outstanding temperament of the breed was evident in the face of these distractions, which did not phase any of the canine competitors. In the stadium, Amos and Monica put up solid routines, scoring an 86 in obedience and an 88 pronounced in protection. Amos showed great power and speed throughout his protection routine, and many spectators were surprised to learn that he was turning 8 years old in just two days. On Sunday, the tracking was delayed and Amos and Monica tracked at 12:30 p.m. on hot, dry terrain. Amos had a very good first article indication Continued on next page Summer 2018 UDC Focus uniteddobermanclub.com 9

The error was not flagged until he had downed on the article on the second track. Unfortunately, the tracklayers did not agree to lay Amos another track after the mistake and he earned a 19 and finished 24th in the World. Soon it was time for the closing ceremonies, and Amos, Monica, and Mr. and Mrs. Matson all participated in the pageantry of the event. Local children participated in the closing ceremonies by holding the signs with each nation s name. The young boy assigned was somewhat afraid of the dogs, but he grew brave watching Amos chew on his ball during the closing ceremony, eventually reaching out to pet Amos who had made a new friend. After the event concluded, Monica and Amos travelled to Vienna, Austria. They spent Amos 8th birthday walking around the historic city and taking in the tourist attractions. Amos was an excellent breed ambassador and was a hit with tourists. The next day, they traveled to the airport for an early morning check-in. Amos handled all of the hustle and bustle well and made a few more fans among airline staff. Both arrived home safely on May 8, wrapping up a busy week of travel and competition. After a few days of sleep, Monica wrote a note to say, Thank you to the United Doberman Club (UDC) and the Board of Directors for their support. It was an honor and privilege to compete on behalf of the UDC at international competition. As Amos is now 8 years old, it is unlikely he will be able to attend IDC WM 2019 in Hungary, but we wish all competitors the best of luck! Thank you to John Soares, John Bochenek, everyone at Metro Detroit Schutzhund Club and everyone on Team Amos for their support. Since returning home, Amos and Monica have not wasted any time in returning to the trial field. On June 2, they earned = 276 Pronounced at the Tri-State Working Dog Club in Warwick, New York, under Judge SV Daniele Strazzeri, and went High Tracking, High Obedience, High Protection, High in Trial. 10 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Summer 2018

14 K9 Nadia by Steven Foss Puppy prepares to earn her badge With 19 years of experience owning Dobermans and training in the sport of Schutzhund, I will argue that very few people are able to say that a dog changed their life, but I can. My previous dog, Azazel, offered me a world of possibilities and broadened my horizons. It was because of him that I traveled to Europe the first time and eventually allowed me to train in Germany, followed by career opportunities abroad. These experiences are what instilled in me the desire to place as many puppies from my first litter in working homes. But what defines a working dog? When I think of a working dog, what immediately comes to mind are protection sports, military, etc., because it is in these venues I have experience. However, there are so many more functions that dogs can help us with that constitute as work. As the time grew near for me to say goodbye to the puppies I watched enter this world, I began exploring possibilities of donating a puppy to Ohio Task Force 1. Then, by the chance of luck when the puppies were 7 weeks old, I decided to bring two of them to the office for a co-worker s retirement lunch. Our offices are located in the County Safety Building below the Stark County sheriff s office and county jail. Sheriff George Maier s office is located at the very front of the building, and apparently he had seen me carrying in two puppies, which he happened to think were coonhounds because the female still had a tail. My phone was ringing when I reached my office, and I saw that it was the sheriff. He inquired why I had puppies at work, and I briefly explained. I had mentioned that I was also in discussions with Ohio Task Force 1 to donate a puppy for search and rescue. He cut me off and told me to bring one upstairs to his office. The two puppies I had with me that day were the male I decided to keep and a female that was still available. When I arrived at his office, he had two of his dog handlers there. They were there at the sheriff s request to test the puppy. I had complete confidence in these puppies, and was confident their solid genetic composition gave them the requisite tools to pass any test. While Pinkie was only 7 weeks old and had never been in this environment before, she immediately ran to greet everyone in the room, a room that had begun to fill with curious onlookers who wanted to see the adorable puppy. The two handlers argued about whether the ball they had was too big for the little puppy and doubted she would show any intereste, but upon rolling it across the floor she immediately gave chase, pounced and carried the enormous ball off. She s got drive, remarked one of the handlers. The sheriff then asked when he could take her home. Sheriff Maier had been looking for a cute working dog that could serve as an ambassador for their department while in training, and would then later transition into a 14 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Summer 2018

15 narcotics-detection dog. First and foremost, the puppy needed to have a rock-solid temperament that would be comfortable in challenging environments. Beyond that, she should also have strong prey drive for detection work. Sheriff George Maier himself being of Romanian heritage had decided to name his new puppy Nadia, after the Romanian five-time Olympic gold medalist Nadia Comaneci. The resulting news stories went viral, and even prompted Nadia Comaneci s husband to share the story on his Facebook page. The puppy we knew as Pinkie, A Nadia de la Pricolici, is out of the breeding between Marco vom Landgraf and Tsarina Les Deux Peupliers. We are very proud that one of our puppies went on to police service, and hope that K9 Nadia continues to represent the Doberman breed honorably.... there are so many functions that dogs can help us with that constitute as work. 16 Going for thewae Proving that old dogs CAN learn new tricks! by Traci Mulligan Long before UDC was conceived, when bitework hadn t yet been condemned by AKC, I attended my very first WAE. After AKC rule changes, bitework was banned from any affiliated AKC clubs, ie: Doberman Pinscher Club of America. It was 1978 and it was my first big Doberman event. I drove an old right-hand drive 4-cylinder mail truck clear across the country from Vermont to attend the DPCA national in Oakland, California. I had five Dobes on board and was sleeping in a hammock strung across the truck interior but that is another story in itself. Once there, I stayed with the brother of folks back in Vermont who d bought their Dobe from me, and were helping finance my adventure in order to have her shown at this huge event. Within that past year, I had bought a new foundation bitch from Alisaton Dobermans after falling in love with CH Gre-Lemor Demetrius v.d. Victor, her grandsire, and she was futurity nominated. I had also entered my Above: UDC/UKC CH Rebholzer Iron Butterfly BSA E1A Apr1 UPr 2 SJ-N CA ATT VCX, aka Doozie Left: A perfect example of the naturally calm and loving temperament of a companion Doberman. 17 An Explanation of WAE: The Working Aptitude Evaluation Program Traci Mulligan and Doozie pet-quality obedience dog in the Parade of Titleholders. Despite these aspirations, there were two much more exciting and life-changing events that I discovered and fell in love with. I got to see the famous Doberman Drill Team AND I met and spoke with Vic Monteleon, anxious to learn more about the Working Aptitude Evaluation the WAE, which he had created. At this point, I was already realizing my deeper interest in working and temperament versus a focus on the breed ring, and I spoke with Vic about possibly learning to become a tester to help spread this test to the east coast. I was to learn later that Vic already had experience in the sport of Schutzhund, which at that point was something I had probably only heard of in passing and certainly never seen. Remember, this was long before the Internet and YouTube videos, so everything to be learned was face-to-face, snail mail or an article in a magazine or book! So here we are 40 years later, and when I think back, without looking at records, I would guesstimate that at least 90 percent of my dogs since then have earned a WAC. Also a good percentage of pups produced from my limited breedings over the years probably were tested. The test certainly isn t the pinnacle of temperament testing, and many feel as I do that any sound Doberman of correct temperament should be able to pass this test. The above mentioned obedience dog was a notable exception, and I m not sure to this day whether the rules have changed or if I didn t understand them, but she failed the umbrella test. Continued on next page This evaluation has five exercises designed to measure a Doberman s response to people, footing, visual and auditory stimuli, and to threat situations in order to judge the dog s aptitude for the work for which the Doberman was created. EXERCISE 1 - Behavior Toward Strangers. A. Neutral Stranger: A stranger approaches, ignores the dog, talks to the handler, then continues on his or her way. B. Friendly Stranger: A different person, also a stranger to the dog, approaches briskly and pats his or her leg to get the dog to come, and talks to the dog to encourage it to approach. EXERCISE 2 - Reaction to Auditory/Visual Stimuli. As the dog and handler walk alongside a van, an assistant behind the van rattles a gravelfilled can. There are three levels to this part of the test, with the assistant in different positions and using differing amounts of can rattle. Gunshots. Handler and dog walk away from a shooter who then fires three shots towards the sky while the dog continues walking. EXERCISE 3 - Reaction to Visual Stimuli. The handler and dog walk toward a seated assistant, who then raises and opens an umbrella toward the dog. EXERCISE 4 - Footing Exercise. Handler and dog walk down a 16-ft.-long strip of plastic. They then walk on a 16-ft. metal exercise pen laying flat on the ground. The dog must not jump off either surface. EXERCISE 5 - Self-Protective Reactions. This test has four parts and uses a decoy person hidden behind a van. The decoy is dressed in a slicker or raincoat, a floppy hat and wearing a concealed agitation sleeve. Part A: Handler and dog proceed toward the van. The decoy staggers out, making weird motions and sounds. Part B: Decoy then turns toward dog and, continuing to make weird sounds and motions, advances on dog. Part C: Decoy raises a stick and makes threatening gestures toward the dog. No contact is to be made between dog and decoy. Part D: The dog must return to normal behavior once the decoy has disappeared behind the van. 18 The action on the WAE field was calm and not the fun Doozie was expecting based on her previous training sessions. WAE Continued from page 17 This tests the dog s recovery and willingness to investigate when a spring-loaded umbrella is opened as they approach it head on. The dog must come very close to or touch it within a short period of time. In Echo s test, I recall that I verbally encouraged her but I did not move forward and point to (without touching) the umbrella, which is what the handler is now told to do. Her reaction was to startle but then stand rigidly in a forward stance, waiting for further indication to determine if this was a possible threat. At least that was my interpretation at the time, and I felt and still feel it was an appropriate response. I say that having had at least two other dogs immediately lunge at and bite the umbrella. I was recently thrilled to learn of a fast approaching WAE test being hosted by Pilgrim DPC, and I immediately sent in registration for my 7-year-old girl, UDC/UKC CH Rebholzer Iron Butterfly BSA E1A Apr1 UPr 2 SJ-N CA ATT VCX. If you re on Facebook you probably know her as simply Doozie. The second entry was her son, Rebholzer Moon Stalker BH SJ CGC ATT, informally known as Grits. Somehow Doozie had reached 7 and not yet been tested, and so became my oldest dog to be tested. The stars simply hadn t yet aligned for it to happen due either to no test within travel distance being available or her being stuck at home with a litter. Summer had finally arrived by the end of June, and it came in gangbusters with muggy air and temps in the mid- 90s as we journeyed from southern Vermont to the Boston area. Not only was it a Friday, but as I watched the westbound Massachusetts-Pike-clogged traffic making its exodus, I realized the volume was very likely so crazy because July 4th being the next Wednesday probably had made this weekend the start of vacation for many. We don t even have a traffic light in my small town, so my tolerance of crawling traffic and stupid drivers is pretty much nil. BUT this was all about doing something productive with the dogs so it was all worth it in the end, even if the drive took a stupidly long day! As planned, I arrived a bit early, thinking to take some pictures of the event before my dogs were on deck. After walking my dogs and as I was still setting up shade, water, fans and such in the blazing sun and cloying humidity, I was told that I was next. Apparently, the incredible heat coupled with the very efficient evaluator, John Schoeneman, had kept everyone moving at a pretty good clip. So everyone was pleased and relieved to have me show up early as there were only a few other dogs still to be tested. It was clear that these hard-working club members had had a long and hot day and were more than ready to close up shop and start blasting the AC in their vehicles as they headed for home or whatever other cooling-off location they had been dreaming of all day. So I went quickly to Plan B, and donned some appropriate footwear. (As I m a barefooter at heart, this means ANY kind of foot covering). I quickly had Doozie suited up in the appropriate wide-leather buckle collar with a safety backup choke chain. I snapped an agitation leash to the buckle and headed to the field and it was immediately obvious that Doozie very clearly remembered this field. It had probably been four years, but she remembered. Oh yes, she did. She earned her BH on this field, but more importantly at least twice had done protection work here. We all know Dobermans remember everything that suits them. And she hadn t seen a decoy in 11 months, so was understandably quite excited. There are no formal commands allowed in the test, and the dog is to be on a loose 6-oot leash. As we crossed the little bridge to the field, she was taking it all in with her head snaking back and forth as she scoped out the various test stations and the people waiting at each. As I listened to the evaluator s instructions, I was thinking to myself, Well, THIS ought to be pretty interesting, and was curious as to how she would react. My amusement grew with each station of the test. Neutral Stranger was readily dismissed as uninteresting, and earned her only negative grade, a -1. The Friendly Stranger was quickly approached, but just as quickly dismissed. This was not what she was looking for, but she eked out a +1 rating. The hidden clattering noise definitely sounded promising and was worth investigating, and the gunshots. Popping umbrella and walking over strange footing were merely part of the tour around the course as she looked hopefully for a helper to appear. Finally it happened: There was the bad guy, and she amped up from the +2 to +3 category in a nanosecond. But wait a 18 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Summer 2018

19 minute. NO bite? And now we re leaving? I really did feel bad for her, but I was probably more amused. And it still makes me chuckle as I knew exactly what she was thinking from the moment we hit that field. I didn t feel quite so guilty knowing that in only a few weeks she d be having a full weekend of protection work and would once again be a happy working Dobe. Her son, Grits, was next up, and his was an entirely different approach. He d never been to this field, but more importantly had spent the past 17 months undergoing two knee surgeries nearly a year apart and lots of vet, chiropractic and physical therapy appointments. Beyond that, he had not seen much of the outside world and had very little training work other than tracking to appease his working drives. Poor boy had pretty much lost a part of his full life, and spent a great deal of his time in lockdown when not on leash. We d only resumed his varied PT program within the previous two months, so when he spied the busy field his response reminded me of a kid entering the gates of the fairgrounds. He s a really nosey life is good kinda guy, so the judge and other people were all exciting stimulus after such a deprived social life, and he was having a grand time dragging me around to people, clattering noises and jumping at the umbrella. He was having a fun time checking everything out and then it happened. We stopped at the designated square marked on the ground, and then a creepy person stumbled out of hiding and threatened us. It was like he had arrived at the dessert buffet as it was definitely the high point of his tour around the field and the most fun he d had in far too long. Hopefully, this was the first baby step on his way to resuming his life again. It is always interesting to take a dog through the WAE test and important to keep an open mind. I invariably find myself doing my own grading and assessment and comparing with what I had expected my dog to show. If you are someone who regularly trains and reads your dog, then you should expect to have pretty closely predicted your dog s responses. Doozie s test was a surprise because I didn t weigh in the critical environmental factor and failed to anticipate her remembered association with this location. There are many varied interests and reasons that people are involved with and enjoy their dogs. For me it really has become all about enjoying the moment along with the journey. When I reflect on some of my most treasured memories of many dogs, it is usually the unexpected moments or events that make that dog special and unique. This one gets a place in Doozie s scrapbook. Get out there and enjoy your dogs and appreciate them for whatever they have to offer. Maybe find a WAE test and give it a shot! 20 DobeChat Profiles of UDC Member Dobermans Any health scares:when Ferro was 7 months old, he broke into the dog-food room and ate an entire bag of dog food. He was rushed to the ER to have his stomach pumped. He was so round I thought he was going to explode! What are your future plans: Hopefully, IDC 2019 in Hungary! Photo Monica Anthony Ferro vom Bergkönig IPO3 FH1 was born August 31, Ferro and owner Katlyn Schwarzwaelder won the 2018 UDC IPO Championship and were High in Trial, High Tracking, High Obedience and High Handled Owned Trained (HOT). Any special quirks: Before feeding, I ask Ferro, Are you hungry for some food? He proceeds to jump around the kitchen three legged, holding his front right leg up batting at the air for over a minute. It is hilarious! Favorite phase: Ferro lives to work, so I believe he enjoys all phases! Not one more than the other. Favorite toy: He loves his chuck-it ball with a rope attached to it. Favorite food: All food! He does not discriminate! Favorite moment: One of my females had a litter of puppies and needed a C-section. She was unable to take care of the puppies the first 24 hours. Ferro jumped into the whelping box with the newborns and licked them to clean them, kept them warm and tried to nurse them... but of course he couldn t! Temperament: Ferro loves his people and is aloof with strangers. He is very protective. Has a wonderful on-and-off switch. He goes from giving me 110 percent on the field to a total couch potato that I have to shake to wake up at 11 a.m. Favorite non-dog sport activity: Hiking, swimming and hunting for rodents are among his favorite past times. Favorite unusual treat: He loves Bush s Baked Beans! Must be the maple and brown sugar! Salem's Castin My Spell CDX RA CA BCAT DM TKN CGC-U BH WAC was born July 27, Rogue and owner Ashlee Taylor won the 2017 DPCA Top20 Obedience Finals. They also placed 7th out of 45 teams in the Open division at the 2017 AKC Eukanuba Obedience Classic. Special quirks: In the morning before our alarm goes off, she LOVES to dive bomb in the bed and burrow under my arm to get in some morning snuggles before we start the day. Favorite phase: Although Rogue enjoys all work, I would say her most favorite is obedience because it gives her an opportunity to truly work for me, which she loves. Favorite toy: Her Kong ball. 20 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Summer 2018

21 Favorite food: Crunchy foods! Ha ha! Cucumbers, green peppers and especially rolled salmon skins. Favorite moment: I ve had so many favorite moments. It s hard to say just one. When we were competing in our round for the Top 20 finals and we did the broad jump, I had to go back and re-work this particular exercise and she nailed it perfectly. After that, she just kept in a rhythm and I couldn t stop smiling the entire rest of the round. It was in that moment I knew that even if we didn t win, I had accomplished something I would always remember: being a true team with my dog. Temperament: Rogue has a really great balanced temperament. She s the kind of dog you can take out in public, she can meet people, be in busy places, she s ready to work at a moment s notice or you can just as easily tell her to go lay down and she is fine with taking a nap. I literally couldn t ask for a better, more well-rounded training partner and companion animal. She s just amazing. Favorite non-dog sport activity: Rogue loves hiking and being out in public seeing new places Any health scares: Rogue tore a tendon in March 2017 not long before we received the final results for Top 20. We didn t know how long her recovery was going to be or if we d be able to get in enough training prior to going to Top 20 finals. Luckily, with the help of a great orthopedic vet and a sports rehab specialist, we got back on track quickly and we were able to make it. What are your future plans: She turns 5 this year, which makes me feel like the clock is ticking. We have a Utility title to finish, and I would love to title her in at least an IPO1 but we will see what the future holds. My most important thing is keeping her healthy so she s with me as long as possible. Championship for IPO3 Dobermans) in Slovakia on May 4-6, Special quirks: Amos loves to help me work by laying on his dog bed in my home office. Amos is very particular about his bathroom business. He prefers to have privacy in a bush, and when he has to go, it s urgent. Favorite phase: Protection and his favorite exercises are the long bite and the escape. Favorite toy: The ball. All the balls. At once. To carry and shake. Favorite food: Sardines are a special treat, but anything edible including ice cream, peanut butter and bananas are favorites. Favorite moment: There are too many moments with Amos that have made me chuckle. He was once on a long down during early morning and some bugs were flying around his head. He was air snapping at them and then quickly popped up, caught one and laid down again in one quick moment and looked around like, No one saw that, right? Temperament: Amos is very sweet dog who likes to be as close as possible to me. He can sleep on his dog bed during the day while I work, but as soon as I am done work he is ready to go to the park or training. During critiques, he is always so proud of himself that he tries to jump on me and get all my attention. He is very neutral, and handled the busy airports, tourist areas and hotels in Slovakia and Austria with ease. Favorite non-dog sport activity: Hiking off leash and exploring urban areas on leash. Any health scares: Amos had a flare up of Lyme disease just before we left for 2018 IDC WM in Slovakia. If his Lyme disease had not responded to treatment, we would have pulled from the competition, but thankfully the treatment worked and he was in good shape for the long travel and competition. What are your future plans: Not sure, Amos just turned 8 years old and is still in good health and LOVES to work. We will see what happens in 2018 and what he tells me he wants to do. C-Amos vom Haus Mann IPO3 was born May 7, Amos and owner Monica Anthony won the 2017 UDC Fall Classic in Ohio and went High in Trial, High IPO3, High Tracking and High Obedience. The UDC has members with many different backgrounds and beliefs. The one thing that we have all declared and that we undeniably share is our love for the Doberman and our dedication to the preservation and promotion of the working heritage of our breed. It is inevitable that we will disagree about the specifics of what preservation and promotion means and how we implement organizational activities to promote our breed. It is also in the best interest of our organization and our breed for us to support each other publicly. When problems arise within our organization, our breed and our club are best served when members use proper procedures to communicate concerns so that the club can address the issues. I encourage our members to get into the ring or onto the field and work your dogs. If we each take personal responsibility to work, show, and trial our dogs, form local clubs, attend events with our Dobermans, and learn more about our breed, the success of the UDC will naturally follow. 22 THE Dobermans by Linda Kye: for Kids Program GOES TO ARKANSAS It was the Day of the Doberman this past May when UDC member Larry Jay Kye and his dog Enzo, Kye's Redhead Stepchild IPO3 BSA-VG-2-a WAC ATT CGC, visited Carol Sobba's class at the elementary school in Vilonia, Arkansas, just north of Little Rock. As part of the ongoing Dobermans for Kids Program, Larry gave a brief history of the breed to the gathered class, and provided historical background about Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, the man who created the breed during the 1890s in Germany. Larry covered the different Doberman colors and discussed the difference in standards between the United States and Germany and what qualities each kennel club looks for in the Doberman in that country. He also talked about Doberman aggression levels and prey drive along with the breed s health issues. Larry and Enzo then put on tracking and obedience demonstrations and showed Enzo s protection skills. He went on to talk about IPO sport and how training can be done with food, then switching to a toy for more drive, something that is required for a sport dog like Enzo. The Dobermans for Kids Program was started by UDC founder Ray Carlisle several years ago. A special thank you goes to Vilonia Elementary School and teacher Carol Sobba for providing this opportunity to show off the breed and provide this educational Doberman moment. 22 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Summer 2018

Or, go online to: If you have questions about UDC Board of Directors or committee activity, please contact your regional director. Director contact information can be found here: AWDF. Negotiations during January and February between AWDF and USCA to host the 2018 AWDF Championship failed to produce a workable solution. The AWDF Executive Board selected an alternate venue for the 2018 Championship in Hell s Kitchen, California, which was hosted by the Hell s Kitchen Schutzhund Club on May 17 through 20, The AWDF Executive Board, after consultation with a registered parliamentarian, voted unanimously to adopt the following resolution: Entries must be made through the AWDF breed club that represents the breed of the dog or an AWDF sport club. For example, German Shepherd Dogs must be entered through USCA or a sport club, Rottweilers through USRC or a sport club, etc. If there is no associated breed club for a dog, then entries may go through any member club. Proof of membership in the relevant AWDF member club must be provided with the entry. Entries must be validated by that club before being officially submitted. This restriction will impact USCA members, which in addition to being the GSD club in AWDF also has members with many different breeds. USCA attorney Peter Spanos has mailed a letter on behalf of USCA threatening legal action against the AWDF if the resolution is not rescinded. The AWDF Board of Delegates met on Feb. 27, Wendy Schmitt attended on behalf of UDC, and will report on the meeting. AWDF Update. UDC President and AWDF Delegate Leslie Carpenter reported that the last meeting of the AWDF Board of Delegates did not address any changes to a recent parliamentarian interpretation of the AWDF bylaws that requires AWDF Championship entries to be submitted through AWDF member breed clubs. There has been disagreement between the USCA and the AWDF Executive Board regarding this decision. A small number of USCA members who do not also belong to an AWDF breed club who wish to enter the AWDF Championship are the primary individuals who could be affected by this decision. Although the number of potential individuals affected is small, the USCA Executive Board appeared to act in a retaliatory manner toward all AWDF member clubs over this decision by adopting a resolution to levy a $100 recording fee for each USCA club trial entry by a non-usca member, unless their breed club is a member of the proposed new all-breed organization called the American Working Dog Counsel (FCI), proposed by the USCA President Jim Alloway and supported by the USCA Executive Board. The member clubs of the AWDF have responded in unison that they have no interest in joining the proposed organization, and the AWDF has continued good relations with the FCI Working Commission. As for the AWDF Championship, held in Hell s Kitchen, California, in May, UDC members were notified that the club will support them with possible reimbursement of entry fees and purchase of team logo clothing if they entered. Candidates for reimbursement and clothing must have been a UDC member in good standing for at least one year before the event. AWDF Delegate Wendy Schmidt attended the 2018 AWDF Annual Meeting on behalf of the UDC. New Business. These topics were discussed during UDC Board meetings: 1. Approve sponsorship of High Doberman in Trial for 2018 AWDF Championship. Approved unanimously. 2. Approve reissue of bylaws ballot to allow members to vote on each proposed change individually. Motion failed. 3. The proposed changes to Chapter 3 of Administration Manual and release for a member comment period of 30 days were approved unanimously. 4. Adopt proposed changes to Chapter 7 of Administration Manual and release for a member comment period of 30 days. Duties of VP to insure all board members receive conflict-of-interest policy, and serve as chair of Compliance Committee before new board member are voted in. Approved unanimously 5. Health Clinic The proposal for UDC to back the cardio portion of the clinic with up to $2,800 against any loss was approved unanimously. 6. The request for a Focus advertising special of three full-page color ads for $190 and three one-half page color ads for $90 was approved and is in effect.
