From the UDC President Leslie Carpenter As spring moves into summer, the rhythm of a life in Doberman dog sport continues. Early morning training to beat the heat. The smell of mown grass, sunscreen, bug repellant, and charcoal. The sound of cicadas during the day, tree frogs and crickets at night. The taste of a cold beer and conversation with good dog friends. The shared joy of new puppies and new titles, along with the shared pain of dog injuries, lost dreams, or the loss of a faithful companion. These are memories that those of us who live Doberman understand. Surely we have different opinions about most things: training, feeding, transporting, grooming, health, breeding, and how the UDC should meet its objectives, but I think we can agree that we are passionate about the breed. A Doberman that embodies the description of the standard: The appearance is that of a dog of medium size, with a body that is square. Compactly built, muscular and powerful, for great endurance and speed. Elegant in appearance, of proud carriage, reflecting great nobility and temperament. Energetic, watchful, determined, alert, fearless, loyal and obedient. The United Doberman Club is a community of Doberman lovers and admirers who have committed to preserve and protect the Doberman. With the understanding that we will continue to disagree about many topics surrounding our passion, we can seek common ground where it exists, and continue working together toward our common goals. We must not be afraid to speak up constructively when we believe that the objectives of the Club are not being met. Each of us must understand that the success of our Club in reaching its objectives is dependent upon the effort that each and every member is willing to put forth for our Club. Many hands make light work, and diverse opinions bring deliberation to our decision making. We each have talents and ideas that the UDC needs. I hope that you will bring your talents into the light by serving the UDC. With your participation, anything is possible. Yours for Team Doberman! 6 From the Focus Editor Steve Stout I ve received thanks from many members for what I do with Focus. I very much appreciate the thanks, and I m grateful to be able to help. Everyone who thanks me, please remember to thank all our Focus contributors. We rely on our members for content, and we re lucky to have some very good and quite talented contributors. As a club, we are focused on one dog. Certainly we all agree that the Doberman is a magnificent canine specimen. Moreover, we have all fallen completely, wholly and forever in love with our dogs. I can t imagine life without my Dobermans, and I know many members feel the same way. All my life I ve loved dogs and still like many breeds, but the bond I have with my dogs goes beyond what words can describe. I frequently use this word: com pan ion 1 kəm panyən/ noun 1. a person or animal with whom one spends a lot of time or with whom one travels. his traveling companion 2. associate, partner, escort, compatriot, confederate But actually, I am one of those crazy weirdos who loves his dogs as though they were his children. I admit it. But I know they re not real kids. I don t dress them up or take them to the amusement park. Dogs and humans are different. My love for them is different than what they feel for me. But what they do have for me is Total Devotion. Respect. Desire to Please. And much more. From what I ve seen, there are, sadly, some children who don t give their parents that much. Now, I m not putting down human children far from it. I do my best to be a good son. Yet it amazes me how much my dogs give me. It s no wonder that much of my life is focused on them. We each have our own unique relationships with our dogs. We have some things in common and some not. I would love to have trained my dogs in IPO and SAR. All I ve been able to do is AKC and UKC obedience. I love watching all sorts of dog sports, and I applaud those who work with their dogs, for whatever reason. SAR is such an important task, so I certainly applaud them. But to each UDC member, I say that we can t judge anyone, dog or member, on just their accomplishments. No matter what you have or have not accomplished, you still have something to contribute to UDC and to Focus. Tell us about your dogs, your experiences, your knowledge, whether it be training, breeding, showing or just loving your Dobermans. In addition to thanking all of our contributors, whether it be information, articles or, most importantly, ads which allow us to publish Focus I have one more thank you and announcement: The Focus team is very fortunate, proud and happy to announce that Judy Robinson has volunteered to join us as assistant editor. She s already put in a great deal of work, and I know we can rely on her because she has shown a passion for the job. Thank you Judy! Photo Terry Jarka 6 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Summer 2017

with a New Summertime Dog Sport By Leslie Carpenter Above: This was Asher s first jump from the dock, and he was less than graceful. But by the end of the day, he was jumping strongly from the dock. Asher is Treasure Seeker s Asher IPO1 WAC owned by Leslie Carpenter If you are active on social media, you have certainly seen photos and videos of dock diving contests. This relatively young sport, which is open to all breeds, has given rise to the construction of permanent indoor and outdoor dockdiving pools around the country, as well as portable dockdiving equipment that is set up at large dog-show clusters or sporting-equipment shows (think Cabela s or a boat show) of several days. If your Doberman loves to retrieve a toy and enjoys water, even if it s just playing in the water hose, there is a good chance that you can be a successful dockdiving team! Dogs and handlers earn dock-diving titles based upon the number of jumps of a certain distance into a pool of water about 40 feet long by four feet deep. There are various types of diving events that measure distance jumped, swimming 10 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Summer 2017

Asher spent his first day in the dock-diving pool learning about the ramp. speed, and height or distance retrieved over water, depending upon the organization. Events occur around the country, and each dock-diving organization also holds a national invitational event where contestants can compete for various awards. The sport is fun for dog and handler, and Dobermans, with their high prey drive, are really good at it, but it can take some training to help your dog have a great first experience with swimming and diving. Make Sure That Your Dog Knows How to Swim. Before trying to convince your dog to jump off of a dock that is 18 to 24 inches above perfectly clear water where it is hard for him or her to judge the depth of the pool and whether it is safe, make sure that your dog knows how to swim. Not all dogs can swim, and even those that swim can often learn better technique with thoughtful training. While paddling with the front feet is good, excessive splashing usually results from a dog that is insecure in the water. When the dog really learns how to use his or her back end, he or she will swim low in the water with very little splashing while swimming. Dogs that begin swimming as puppies are usually very good swimmers because they have little reason to fear the water. Older dogs can learn, but don t assume that you can just drop a dog in the water and he or she will automatically swim. A life vest for dogs, along with a floatie around the loin, can help to teach dogs to use their back legs to swim instead of trying to reach the bottom of the pool to walk. Swimming is great exercise for your dog with low impact on the joints, and a built-in cooling system so that your dog is not likely to overheat but it s easy to overdo a swimming session if your dog is a happy retriever. Keep your initial active swim sessions short, no more than 10 or 15 minutes of actual swimming. As your dog builds endurance, you can swim him or her for longer periods, but always be aware of the intensity of the exercise for your dog, and don t overtire him or her. Dock Diving Continued from page 11 After your dog gains confidence by swimming in a clean lake, a family pool or an indoor pool for dogs, then a trip to a dock-diving pool is in order. Teaching Your Dog About the Diving Pool. Most permanent dock-diving pools will have orientation days where they will allow you a certain number of dives or certain amount of time for a fee. The dock-diving pool is different from a lake swim or even a family pool swim. The edge of the dock is quite high off the water, and the side of the pool where the dog exits on a ramp will vary. Most dogs are less intimidated by an outdoor pool rather than an indoor pool (think noise and crowds), and it s usually more pleasant for your dog to learn to swim in the pool when water temperatures are mild. You should have a helper with you, and you should definitely dress to get wet, but wear sturdy water shoes you need them for walking on the dock and ramp. You should choose a floating toy that your dog loves to retrieve that becomes his/her dock toy. A bumpertype toy that sits well above the water will be easier for your dog to see when he is in the pool. For your first lesson, forget the dock. Your first goal is to teach your dog how to safely come out of the pool using a number 12 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Summer 2017

of very short retrieves from the exit ramp into the pool, encouraging the dog to return to you on the ramp. Gradually extend the distance of the retrieves from the ramp to the center of the pool so that the dog learns to come back to you on the ramp from anywhere in the pool. Once your dog will swim out into the pool from the ramp and return to you on the ramp, it s time to try the dock. There are many ways to encourage the dog to jump into the water from the dock. Rules will vary as to whether you can enter the pool, but some dogs may do better to come to you while you are in the water, while others will be more likely to jump in to retrieve a bumper or other toy. Don t be surprised if your dog that normally jumps from the lake shore to retrieve a toy from the water doesn t immediately jump into the pool. It may take a little coaxing to get the dog to take that first leap of faith. Where Can I Learn More About Dock Diving? Each of these organizations has more in-depth information about how to train your Doberman to swim and dock dive. The sport is very friendly to newcomers, and most, if not all events, allow try it sessions between competition rounds (called splashes or waves) for a nominal fee. Spend some time looking around, do your homework (teach your dog to swim), then give it a try! 14 The Doberman Diversity Project Photo Alissa Weaver Understanding DNA Test Results by Sophie Liu, DVM What does it all mean? Medical and genetic test results are tricky. Part of their power lies in their subtlety. After all, if medical or genetic test results were as simple as a Yes or No, we wouldn t need medical doctors or veterinarians or geneticists to interpret the results. Rather, test results often need to be analyzed in the context of what are the test limitations and a dog s actual physical picture. Genetic testing through the DDP s collaboration with Embark is no different. After the nail biting and waiting, participants receive a comprehensive list of genetic test results for their Dobermans, including: von Willebrand, PDK4 (DCM1 gene), coat color loci B (black/brown) and D (dilution gene), and genetic Coefficient of Inbreeding, just to name a few. But what does it all mean? If a dog is homozygous for the von Willebrand mutation, does it actually suffer from von Willebrand Disease? Does a heterozygote for PDK4 have DCM? The truth is that DNA test results are often subtler than we think, and the key to using them wisely is to first understand what they mean. Understanding DNA test results. Due to the very highresolution DNA test results from Embark, each Doberman tested with the DDP/Embark collaboration has access to many diseaseassociated gene mutations. Two in particular are important for Doberman owners and breeders to consider: vwd1 (associated with von Willebrand Disease) and PDK4 (associated with Dilated Cardiomyopathy, DCM). The key word is associated. Many studies look at associations between a gene and a particular disease. Association does not mean that one causes the other. For example, researchers at NCSU s veterinary college found an association between having an abnormal PDK4 gene with higher risk of developing DCM. As a result, PDK4 was thought to be associated with higher DCM risk in this group of American Dobermans. But this did not mean that PDK4 gene caused DCM. Conversely, it does not mean that being clear for PDK4 means being clear for DCM. Additionally, 14 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Summer 2017

further research by renowned veterinary cardiologist, Dr. Wess in Germany, found that the PDK4 mutation was not associated with DCM in European Dobermans. Yet, as recently as 2016, researchers in North America again found that Dobermans with the abnormal PDK4 mutation had dysfunctional mitochondria. This provides tantalizing evidence for a potential cause of DCM because DCM-affected hearts often demonstrate severe mitochondrial dysfunction. Could dogs with abnormal PDK4 mutations make diseased mitochondria, which then malfunction and lead to DCM? It is an interesting hypothesis. Nothing is certain yet. The story of PDK4 is unclear and still being written. So how can we best use genes to better predict health or disease? What does it mean to have a dog that is heterozygous or homozygous-positive for PDK4? Ultimately, the strength of a gene's association with a disease depends a lot on penetrance. Penetrance is how many dogs will show exactly what you'd expect based on its genetic results. For example, the coat color loci B (black/brown gene) and D (dilution gene) are fully penetrant. In other words, you will see, in your dog's appearance, exactly what the genetic results say. So if your Doberman is BBDD, you will see a black Doberman no ifs, ands or buts! However, with many diseases, penetrance is rarely 100 percent. In other words, many dogs that carry an abnormal PDK4 gene will not develop DCM. Conversely, there are also many dogs that are clear for PDK4 gene but that will develop DCM. This is because the PDK4 penetrance is about 37 percent. This means that of 100 Dobermans that carry the abnormal PDK4 gene, only about 37 of them would develop DCM due to the gene. The bottom line: Doberman owners and breeders must use test results wisely. We must understand what the test results mean and how they may or may not predict health or disease. Genetic tests provide insight into what we might expect in our dogs health; only veterinarians, however, diagnose diseases or clear dogs for disease. For example, even dogs that are homozygous positive for the abnormal vwd gene may or may not demonstrate signs of von Willebrand Disease, a bleeding disorder. The genetic test result does not diagnose disease. The diagnosis of a disease comes only from a veterinarian. The genetic test simply provides insight into what may happen. As for DCM? Ultimately, there is only one way to diagnose DCM, and that is consulting with your veterinarian to perform 24- hour Holter monitoring with a special heart ultrasound, or an Echocardiogram. Taking DNA test results up a notch: The Matchmaker Breeding Tool. Luckily for Doberman Diversity Project participants, our geneticists at Embark have been hard at work digesting the complex subtlety of genetic data and transforming them into a simple Matchmaker Breeding Tool. Through revolutionary technology, every Doberman tested through the DDP/ Embark collaboration can search through our database to find potential mates that will: 1. Avoid doubling up on disease-associated mutations (i.e. vwd) 2. Produce puppies with truly lower genetic Coefficient of Inbreeding 3. Allow you to add in the missing genetic element to your breeding program There is no more guessing about the pedigree COI, about potential coat colors, about the puppies vwd or PDK4 status. All of this vital genetic information is centralized and digested into a user-friendly format for all Doberman Diversity Project participants. The potential power of this tool is remarkable! Beta testers with the Doberman Diversity Project have already performed preliminary testing, and the Breeding Tool is expected to roll out in the summer of Stay tuned! 18 Photo Kevin O Neill You Are More Important Than You Know Why the future of the breed is in your hands by Diane Jessup Old age is hell, but it does have its gifts. It can give one great perspective and knowledge that can only be gained by life-long experiences. For most of us, our essential truths don t change throughout the years, but almost everyone will experience some change in their viewpoints as their lives progress. It was Muhammad Ali who said, The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life. Human or animal, how we proceed through life is heavily determined by instinct and genetics there is a good, solid, behavioral reason you are adorable as a child, rebellious in your teens, boastful and confident in your 20s, settle down in your 30s and are content to sit this one out in your 70s. You see the same thing in our dogs: cute, appealing puppies; awful teens; wild-ass young adults; steady in middle age; sitting on the porch in old age. It has to do with the jobs we are designed to be doing at those ages. The young must be appealing to be cared for, and rebellious to break the bonds of family to go forth in the world; the young adult must have the confidence to battle for territory, status, mates; the middle-aged creature must provide stability to the pack or family. And the old? The old are (or should be) valued for the ability to look back and bring perspective and wisdom to the present. What has this to do with the Doberman? Or with you? Everything. Because many of you reading this are young. You are the future of the breed. This treasure, this rarest of animals, the working dog, is a precious gift handed down to all of us by a thousand generations of people before us. Think of that thousands! This breed did not materialize out of thin air. The Doberman s component breeds were all working animals, bred for centuries for various jobs by people who did not have the resources or desire to keep worthless dogs alive. All these ancestral working-dog breeders handed down something of value until, at last, it had now been given over to your hands. This is not a history article. It matters not what exact breeds Herr Dobermann and his confederates used to create the breed that bears his name. What matters is that you are now the stewards of this long line of proud dogs. And what you do matters. But what can one person do? You d be surprised. You can make a difference for the breed. Here s how: 18 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Summer 2017

Listen to old timers! Experience is the best teacher, but an astute, willing person can learn so much and avoid making so many unnecessary mistakes by simply dropping the ego and asking questions of those who have been there, done that. Find a mentor with interests similar to yours. People want to share and reminisce take advantage of that! Make absolutely sure you are the right home for an authentic Doberman. I can t stress this enough. Don t buy into the it s all how you raise them baloney. Respect the breed enough to know if you are the right person for a protection dog breed. Not everyone is, and you need to come to terms with that. Don t get a Doberman to prove anything, whether it s They are really just pussy cats and would never hurt a fly, or my Doberman would never bite or They are the toughest dog in the world. Respect the breed enough to know why it was developed and how a real member of the breed should act and react and don t try to change it! No breed needs news headlines about Dobermans that were more than the owners could manage. Every one of these incidents causes problems for dogs of all breeds and their owners. Make absolutely sure you need a Doberman. Two things that get Dobermans and other breeds in trouble are the trendy appeal of owning a popular breed, and the desire to rescue a misunderstood animal. Shelters and rescues are placing (read: selling) dogs that are the result of poor, thoughtless breeding. Some are dogs that need hard exercise, a job and an above-average engaged owner. Not every person needs or should own a Doberman. Ask yourself. Why do I want a Doberman? What can you offer this dog? Do you need a strong, determined, large dog that requires enormous amounts of hard physical exercise to be happy and sane, one that may well want to test his mettle against other dogs that come along? Do you need a dog that can easily pull your child to the Photo Lori Schneegass Robert Kriegel photo submitted by Linda Lindic ground, that should not be walked while you push a stroller or walk other dogs, and one that can easily jump a six-foot fence? Do you want a dog that may terrify neighbors and make renting a challenge? It s something to think about before you commit to any dog. Don t support those who breed generic Dobermans or Dobe crosses. A generic dog is one that does not have the specific traits for which the breed is noted, either in appearance nor character. Having been a very popular fad breed in the past, it is easier to find generic Dobermans than authentic ones these days. While it might be far easier to handle, manage and own a generic dead-head Doberman than one which is typical of the breed s true character, keep in mind that generic Dobes can be nervy, fear-aggressive protection dog cross breeds that are much more likely to bite someone. So, if you are tempted to buy a 110-pound Euro/Gladiator Doberman from your cousin because they are so mellow don t. Buy an authentic Doberman or buy another breed that is supposed to be mellow. But don t support those who are removing breed traits from our purebreds. Think about who you want producing the next generation of dogs. If you don t support good breeders, who will? Every time you buy a Doberman from a rescue or shelter, you eliminate a home needed by a reputable breeder. Public perception is a major problem here after all, how can anyone say anything negative about something called rescue? Well, I can! I was heavily involved in rescue for many years, and was around when the Doberman fad of the 1970s occurred. The Doberman s time as a fad breed is over (at least for now), but it left the breed in a very weakened state weakened in temperament, weakened in health, weakened in structure. Today the breed is still trying to climb out of the hole caused by its turn as a popular breed. We need to support those who are trying to piece the breed back together and take it forward. If you can only have one Continued on next page Summer 2017 UDC Focus uniteddobermanclub.com 19

Future Continued from page 19 dog, make it a well-bred dog, and help a breeder help the breed. If you can have multiple dogs, then make one of them a rescue if you wish. The Doberman is without question one of the most beautiful breeds. For this reason, it has always been a popular show dog. This has been more of a curse than a blessing, as it has been for all working-type dogs. If your interest lies in only producing pretty dogs that are content to lie around in crates all day with no other work than trotting around a ring, pick a different breed. The Doberman was bred with very specific traits in mind, the traits that made it the dog of choice for storming the beaches of the Pacific front in WWII: guts, intelligence, agility, activity, aggression. These traits are lost when outward appearance is the only goal for which a dog is bred. The Doberman is one of a handful of dogs that must always be judged both inside and out. This is why the United Doberman Club was formed. Photo Melissa Fields Please support those breeders who abide by its ideas! Do not support the no-kill-shelter concept. WHAT? Yes, to a dog lover this seems counter-intuitive at first. But it is my opinion that the no-kill movement is causing untold harm, not only to the animals stuck in these facilities but to working breeds in particular. It is much more than the stress dogs living in these facilities endure for months and even years, it is the fact that to make the concept of no kill work, facilities reduce adoption fees, and/or drop home checks or any safety measures for the dogs. Rescues now truck vans full of questionable dogs to remote locations, sell them, then leave the area and the dogs and their new owners to fend for themselves. In fact, last year a rescue in Virginia brought in a group of semi-feral street dogs from Egypt that included a dog carrying rabies and a falsified rabies certificate. Significant numbers of dogs and people were exposed. For dogs always under the intense scrutiny of the media, such as the Doberman and the American pit bull, this haphazard placement of animals has resulted in many negative events which should have and could have been avoided. Think deeply before you breed a litter. Is it only to produce pretty show dogs? Is it only to produce hyper, bounce-off-the-wall IPO or ring-sport dogs that can t be in the house? Is it to produce calm, sweet, lazy, mellow family dogs? If any of the above is the case, there are many breeds that can meet all of the above criteria wonderfully but they are not authentic Dobermans. Photo Leslie Carpenter Your goal must be to produce Dobermans of characteristic type in temperament and character. If not, find another breed that more closely fits your goal. Do not ever pass on ill-tempered, unsound dogs. Sure, it s hard as hell to hold a dog while it is euthanized, but the dogs of character Rottweilers, Dobermans, American pit bulls get bad press today primarily for one reason only: mismanagement. Specifically, mismanagement of mentally unsound dogs. If you don t feel you, one single person, is important, consider that many of the laws against and restrictions on dog breeds were put in place due to the actions of one individual. All it takes is one person too thoughtless to euthanize an unsound dog and someone will get bit, mauled or killed. Don t be that person. Don t make excuses for unsound dogs. If you have to excuse your dog s behavior by saying things like, She doesn t like men, He doesn t like hats, She s protective or other excuses for a growling, nervous, inappropriately human-aggressive dog, never, ever pass that dog on. Either keep it confined and out of the public or have it euthanized. A dog doesn t have a right to live if it poses an unreasonable threat to other people. And lastly, to the advocates, rescuers, shelter workers, casual owners, friends or family members of owners, every one of you can light that proverbial candle in the dark or you can curse the darkness. The choice is yours. It all comes down to how strong your love or passion for the Doberman is. Educate yourself as to the true nature of the breed. Be aware that if your experience has been with select shelter dogs or poorly bred animals with questionable temperaments, you may need to speak to breeders and owners of authentic Dobermans a UDC show or trial is a great place to do this to learn more than your experience has taught you. Trying to paint the Doberman (or breed it to be) as a dog to be dressed up in tutus, live in packs, play at the dog park or be hand to anyone who wants a beautiful dog is just as harmful as portraying them as a vicious dog intent on lashing out and biting people. Both are untrue of the authentic Doberman. A poorly bred deadhead or nervy man-biter can be exceptions to breed type but let s keep them as exceptions. The breed s future is in your hands! 21 Search and Rescue Teams at UDC in Sedalia Photo Nick Samac Irene Korotev and Shamus by Irene Korotev Many of us were very happy when we learned that the 2017 UDC National Specialty would be in Sedalia, Mo., for we knew its relatively central location would be beneficial to attracting more of our search and rescue (SAR) Doberman handlers to the show. The SARdobe discussion list announced to its membership that plans were being formulated for SAR activities on the fairgrounds, with multiple sites available for training. Early in the new year, Lori Schneegass and I traveled from the Kansas City area to Sedalia, a little more than an hour away. We met with Suzan Shipp, who drove around the fairgrounds with us as we located various sites which would be perfect for our multi-discipline attendees. Suzan was our intermediary with the state fair staff, getting permission for our access during the week of the show to the sites we selected. We were able to gain access to good training sites for Live Find Area Search and Trailing, as well as for Human Remains Detection. Through our contacts with the Missouri Task Force (FEMA) in Columbia, Mo., we also were able to schedule a training session on their rubble pile for our Disaster Live Find and Recovery teams. Our anticipation of a large turnout of SAR Doberman handlers turned out to be true. (More and more handlers recognize that Dobermans are excellent problem solvers, suitable for search and rescue.) We had handlers from Kansas, Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Missouri, for a total of 16 handlers. It was the largest gathering we ve had in years. It was wonderful to reconnect with SAR friends we hadn t seen in years, and meet new ones. Of course, the conviviality continued into the evening, as we all shared memories and stories from past shared activities. The training venues were perfect for our group, providing hours of enjoyable training opportunities for everyone, despite all the rain throughout the week. The only site we were unable to use due to the rain was the rubble pile in Columbia. By its very nature, the rain-soaked rubble combined with the torrential downpour on the training day made the venue unsafe for human and canine alike. All in all, we hope to build on this year s success for next year s show, wherever it may be. Summer 2017 UDC Focus uniteddobermanclub.com 21

The Search and Rescue Experience at National by Pam Burns Photos by Nate Landick Maria Ciski s dog River searching for human remains. The 2017 UDC National Specialty in Sedalia, Mo., proved to be quite popular with search and rescue (SAR) handlers this year we had more SAR attendees than ever before. Here are some comments from a few of those who took advantage of SAR training during national week. Lisa Zang, with Rayna and Brody: This was my first year at a UDC national. I am a search and rescue handler as well as a task force handler. I found the experience to be very rewarding. The training opportunities at the fairgrounds provided myself and my dogs challenging conditions to be able to further my handling skills. I thoroughly enjoyed watching some of the other UDC competitions and tests that were going on. I find that I always can learn from something, even though I m not participating directly in the event. Through this observation, I can take something home and be able to apply it. I look forward to next year and making many more new friends, as well as getting to know some of you better. Rayanne Chamberlain with Quest: The 2017 national was a wonderful experience. Irene made amazing arrangements for our training. While it was a huge disappointment to me to have our rubble training day rained out, the rest of the week was amazing. The best thing for me was having everything in one place, allowing us to work our dogs, watch various other events and even participate in the WAE as helpers! From a SAR handler s point of view, this was one of the best nationals we ve attended. As a Doberman owner/handler, I am always excited to attend the UDC national. It s a great opportunity to meet other Dobe people that I would normally never get a chance to meet. Maria Ciski with River and Quinn: This year, in Sedalia, we had a rare opportunity to get a lot of Search and Rescue dog handlers together from various parts of the country to train together, network and just generally hang out and share stories. This year handlers from Michigan, Kansas, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Kentucky and Missouri all converged on the amazing fairgrounds in Sedalia. Most of the handlers were Doberman owners, but the word got out and a few other breeds were also represented. In spite of soggy and cold weather, our mood was pretty high. We were able to set up areas to work our dogs. Experienced handlers got to work with newcomers. Several young dogs were introduced to search, and training plans for the continued growth and future success of each puppy were put together. It was a truly rare opportunity to get 22 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus Summer 2017

One of the things that meant the most to me was the welcoming and friendly response we received from other UDC members not involved with SAR. Everyone we met was genuinely interested in what we SAR handlers do. The support and encouragement we received was awesome. Thank you UDC for all the work you did to make this national successful. Let s do it again! Pam Burns with Trace: The UDC national was such a nice experience for Trace and me this year. We had a large group of SAR folks, some of whom we haven t seen in a while, as well as some young dogs. The fairgrounds was such a nice venue. There were a lot of options for us to work with. The first day it was pouring, so we were able to spend it working in the coliseum, a good area for the dogs to run and blow off steam after our long drive. The next day we actually had sun and were able to work outside. Our final day, we had rain in the a.m., but it let up for the most part in the afternoon. We were able to work outside, even setting up a water problem, and work in the open-air swine building. Because we were able to stay at this venue the entire time, I was able to watch some of the conformation as well as watch and participate in the WAE. It was so nice to not have to drive elsewhere to train. Along the way, I got to meet several people I d only seen their names on the list. There seemed to be such a warm friendly atmosphere. I felt it was such a positive experience and the folks in charge of getting this venue did a great job as a whole, as well as helping the SAR contingent get the areas we needed. Looking forward to next year and seeing everyone again. Right: Pam Burn s Trace working the wall for HR. Summer 2017 UDC Focus uniteddobermanclub.com 23
