POLICE K9 UNIVERSITY Police K9 University is an exclusive training program for law enforcement, military and security agencies. Nino s unique crossover from a high level dog sports background transcending to Police K9 work offers a unique insight on the most contemporary training techniques. This course contains theoretical and practical modules. The theoretical module takes place in the classroom and covers contributing factors that have made an impact on Nino s work as a Police K9 Handler. The practical modules include: tactical obedience applications, grip development, building searches, team apprehension techniques, muzzle work, riot training, role playing scenarios, extraction and capture of dangerous dogs, decoy work for police purpose, and scent detection. This is a complete customizable outline for the specific needs of any k9 unit NINO DROWAERT ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
THEORETICAL MODULE This part will take place in classroom. Nino will explain the contributing factors that have made the most positive and effective impact on his work as a Police K9 Handler and Police Instructor for the last decade. TOPICS: LOCKED IN DRIVE This is a very common problem for dogs that are purchased abroad, especially in protection work. It forces handlers to use compulsive methods, which do not contribute to establishing a police dog/ handler relationship. Nino will explain how to solve and circumvent these common challenges CLICKERS ON DUTY Clickers sound like a terrible combination with police service work, and they are. Find out how you can set up a communication system with this tool that can easily be abandoned later. Horizontal and vertical communication? Check! GEAR UP This topic tells you how and when to use a specific tool. As police K9 handlers we need to know about the most modern tools and their applications. THE MULTITASKER Handling a high drive dog and overseeing a dangerous situation is by far the most challenging skill for any K9 handler. You need to learn to become proficient at doing both! This is THE most important skill and makes the difference between poor and top dog handling. Find out the top routines you need to get in place for developing this skill. GO PRO Full time dog handlers are given a certain amount of training and time to interact and train with their new K9 partners. In this topic you will gain an understanding of the human/canine connection and how to make your bond stronger. ACCELERATORS AND BRAKES As K9 handlers on duty we know situations can turn in a heartbeat. What does it take to switch the dog into street mode? What if the dog is new and naturally friendly with people? This is a common issue that will be addressed in full detail in this section. You will also find out how to use tactile (kinesthetic) commands on your K9 in order to accelerate him into a certain drive, or hit the brakes! E-COLLARS AND SERVICE This section covers the integration of e-collars in police dog training and street work. The gains made (when properly integrated) with this training aid are extremely valuable as it increases one s ability to have clear communication with the K9 when it is in its highest level of arousal while also allowing predictability in
performance not only in close quarters but also at a distance with distractions THE OUT Why is it that many police K9 dogs have problems with the out? Often in training, but worse in real situations. What makes these problems occur and how can you avoid these? Your answer to legal problems concerning this issue might have never been this easy THE HOLD What good is an out if you do not have a solid hold command to virtually hold anything in any circumstance? THE most underestimated technical exercise of all time for police purpose dogs. Turn an average working dog into a top police dog! TEAM EFFORTS Police K9 handlers often lead a solitary life. Training your K9 will always be in a team environment. Nino will share his experiences on how to increase trust and build confidence in your K9 while with other teammates that often don t have backgrounds in pro dog training. TESTS AND EXAMS Obedience for police patrol dogs, as it is now, is mainly practiced for the purpose of passing a certification test. This program will take these beginning skills and make sure they are woven into deployments in a useful way. You will learn how to successfully prepare for your certification test through proven tips and practical advice NINO DROWAERT ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
PRACTICAL MODULES The following concepts are typically covered during the practical training sessions that form the backbone of this program. As participant dogs are often used during these training sessions it is common to see multiple aspects of the areas listed below covered during one session. Handler development is an integral part of this program and it should be considered that it is natural that learning will occur as part of these training sessions. MODULE 1: BASIC AND ADVANCED OBEDIENCE Having a Police K9 is not only about the highlight reel of deployments. Certification is tested over and over and it plays a big part in our performance growth and in our professional career. A working K9 dog needs to have a high level of control in order to remain stable and manageable at all times. - Learn the 5 mandatory behaviors for any police dog. - Group obedience with and without distractions. - Jumping various heights and obstacles with confidence - Decoy replacements in order to practice high drive obedience - Switching drives for police dogs - Reward techniques for handlers - Heeling with and without handler focus - Noise discipline to not give away positions of cover or concealment MODULE 2: GRIP DEVELOPMENT Neutralizing a suspect needs to be fast and efficient. Grip is not something to take for granted, even when it comes naturally to certain dogs. It is
Police K9 UNIVERSITY a continuous training process you will need to maintain with the right equipment and techniques. In these sessions we can either focus on young dogs or dogs that are already on duty. Before transitioning to hard surfaced objects (civil equipment) we need to make sure dogs have a firm, solid and hard grip. - Foundational grip work - Prey VS fight drive (sport VS Law Enforcement K9) - To pull or to push? - Different target areas to engage - Building confidence - The forced grip - Benefits of full grips and how to stimulate these grips on civil suits - Problem solving for grip related issues such as mouthing, releasing grip, lack of confidence MODULE 3: BUILDING SEARCHES Police K9 s roles are dictated by the highly urban nature of the cities. Due to the high population density and the nature of K9 Unit deployments, high levels of control are necessary in very dynamic, noisy, and conflictrich scenarios. Tracking of suspects is not of the same priority in this environment, however there is a massive operational requirement for building searches and extractions of suspects. Many aspects of these searches would typically be considered tactical in nature.
- Obedience commands in tactical movement - Developing drives for building searches - Active guard on closed doors where human scent is - Free building searches - Controlled building searches on leash - Active building search with tactical approach - Door to door tactical clearance techniques - Directional send away - Reading your dogs indication and interest - Problem solving for building related issues MODULE 4: TEAM APPREHENSION TECHNIQUES Before hitting the field and practicing we will first watch a compilation of videos demonstrating the technique to neutralize suspects as a team with a K9. This technique was tested at Nino s police department with over a 1,000 different police officers and proved to be very effective. - Fast neutralization of a suspect - Apprehension of a suspect in team formation for arm bites - Apprehension of a suspect in team formation for leg bites - Importance of different target areas - Maintaining a clean out - Passive guards on a suspect - Active guards on a suspect - Backward extractions
2016 NINO DROWAERT ALL RIGHTS RESERVED MODULE 5: MUZZLE WORK Muzzle work has been a big part of police dog introductions to civil work. Often when dogs engage with muzzles they lack a certain seriousness and proper technique to actually inflict damage. Nino has a diversified back ground with high drive working dogs and understands the intricacies and needs of solid Police K9 vs a sport dog such as that found in NVBK. Out of all the biting sports, NVBK is recognized as the hardest hitters with muzzles while guarding objects. Nino will teach how to utilize proven progressions to develop what is mandatory for a safe and reliable and deployable Police K9. - Introduction to wearing a muzzle - Foundation to hard impact muzzle work - Specific target practice in muzzle work - How to reward a proper muzzle hit in training - Task of the helper - Building fight drive in muzzle work - Muzzle deployment on active duty - How to avoid injuries for helpers and dogs MODULE 6: RIOT TRAINING How can you control crowds or make smart use of dog formations? And how do you keep your colleagues safe during offensive advancements on a large scale? In these sessions we will simulate different formations and apprehensions with dogs as a squad.
- Role of a K9 unit during calamities - K9 teams in offensive operations - K9 apprehensions during riots - Role of police non-dog handlers during K9 deployments - Danger factors to consider for K9 handlers MODULE 7: ROLE PLAYING SCENARIOS The pinnacle for a police dog handler is being able to control the dog and make decisions in stressful circumstances. We will set up scenarios in order for the dog handler to develop his police and dog handling skills. A balanced, controlled, responsible and accurate deployment of a K9 is what your department is looking for. - Real environment scenario s to solve with as a K9 team - Role of the helpers and how to protect themselves during scenarios - Proper build up to complete assignments with a K9 - Non verbal communication techniques with your K NINO DROWAERT ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
- Positions K9 handler while being confronted with one or more suspects by foot - Positions K9 handler while being confronted with one or more suspects in a vehicle - Intelligent and pragmatic problem solving in an operational sense MODULE 8: EXTRACTION AND CAPTURE OF DANGEROUS DOGS As law enforcement we can be confronted or assigned to deal with dangerous dogs on duty. Nino has taught this course to police officers and K9 handlers throughout the country for years. - Recognizing danger signals in dogs. - Recognizing different drives and arousal thresholds - To do s when confronted with dangerous dogs - What not to do when confronted with dangerous dogs - How to react when you are being bitten - How to react when your partner gets bitten - Utilizations of various equipment to capture dogs - The effect of different weapons on dogs - How to prevent dog bites MODULE 9: DECOY WORK FOR POLICE PURPOSE Advanced decoy work for police dogs is essential in order to build a reliable K9 for deployments in any circumstances. Nino will share the skills earned as a certified Decoy and how incorporate those skills into daily training to remain sharp as a K9 handler while also maintaining both the skill set and welfare of your K9 needed as solid K9 partner
- Decoy training for puppy grip foundation - Implementation of sticks and accessories - Decoy training for civil / police work - Decoy training for interactive scenario s - Use of remote collars by decoys - Selection tests for dogs you wish to purchase from vendors - Master defense - Building long and fast attacks MODULE 10: SCENT DETECTION Nose work plays a large role in working K9s whether it be in high density urban area building searches, low density field searches, and/or narcotics searching of prisons or airports. This module covers the foundations of tracking and indication. - Building hunt/prey drive - Air scenting in open areas - Teaching tracking of disturbed terrain - Article indication - Implementing obedience for detection dogs - Direct or indirect rewards at source? - E collar use for detection dogs - Problem solving
