2 EDITOR S NOTE So, has Autumn come yet? Have we seen the end of the Summer? Alrighty then. The cooler and even colder training nights are on the way which means keeping comfortable on the grounds especially in the Monday night classes. Know your dogs cold tolerance levels and give them something warm to wear when it's cold. Last month saw the culmination of competions competed in and tittles awarded to some of our members and their dogs, special medals and trophies were presented at the AGM last month, see the list and some photos on page 6. The AGM also saw the committee re-established for the next year and you can see the updated list on page 12. Speaking of things coming to an end, we have an article which you probably wouldn't want to read at the dinner table. Find out what Dr Marjorie Au has to say about your dog's rear end. 3 ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE. by: Genevieve Young Have you ever wondered what it s like to be an instructor at Hills? Perhaps you saw the invitation in a recent Howler, asking for expressions of interest in the next Instructors Course. For people who are intrigued, but don t feel confident about signing up, this article is for you! In 2011, when I was still fence sitting, pondering will I, won t I?, our Chief Instructor, Dianne, told me: If you commit to the course, I can teach you what you need to know. So, I took the challenge, and it was a great decision. The course takes a year to complete, and balances practical and theoretical components. You ll learn how to train people to train dogs, and will gain a working knowledge of many areas of canine development and care. One of the best things about the Instructors Course is that it gives you unlimited access to the collective experience and knowledge of our existing instructors, and you ll attend training days and seminars organised by the club. If this appeals to you, then don t miss this amazing opportunity. Don t worry that there are assignments, that you are new to dog training, or that you don t have this or- that ability. It won t matter. What does matter is the ability to think about and solve problems! Throughout the course, you will definitely be challenged, and you ll be stimulated to consider more aspects of dogs (and other animals including humans) than you ever knew existed! As a trainee, you ll be mentored every step of the way, and will gain satisfaction from knowing you are contributing to the welfare of pet dogs. 4 A MUTT S BUTT by: Dr Marjorie Au Tales from the Backside Looking after your dog s health sometimes means identifying issues around their backsides, which may be hidden by a fluffy coat, or for some of the more squeamish amongst us a no-go zone altogether. However there are a few things, you should be aware of: Anal Glands (or Sacs) Dogs & cats have two anal sacs which are secretory glands on either side of their anus. The secretions are expelled through a thin duct which opens at 4- and 8-o clock (if the anus is a clock-face) when stool is passed and expands the anal sphincter. We believe the anal secretions are scent-markers, a kind of name tag, allowing dogs to identify each other & know who s been where. Hence the reason why dogs are so interested in sniffing each other s butts and poo when they meet. Anal gland secretions vary from dog to dog, and even from left to right gland; so that in consistency can be watery or pasty to dry & crumbly. However they all have the same property that is very distinct - the secretions STINK! Problems arise with anal glands when the secretions are thickened or solidified and block the ducts. The sacs keep filling up, putting pressure on the surrounding area, and the dog may attempt to relieve the discomfort but by biting or chewing their back ends, or more commonly by scooting ie. sitting down with back legs in the air and dragging their bottoms along the ground. If you see this behaviour, it may be a good idea to get a vet check sooner rather than later, because impacted anal glands can lead to abscesses forming and even bursting out through the skin, leaving a dog with a real pain in the backside. Treatment for anal gland abscesses usually involves antibiotics and antiinflammatories as a minimum, and sometimes flushing or surgical lancing of the gland. Some dogs never have a problem, while others may have recurrent impactions. Preventative measures suggested include increasing fibre in the diet, or feeding raw bones to increase the bulk of the stool; as well as regular exercise and weight loss if the dog is overweight. There is no single panacea for this problem so advice in conjunction with your veterinarian is recommended. Rectal Prolapse This is more common in pups or young dogs, usually with a history of straining to defecate (tenesmus) from severe diarrhoea or other conditions causing colitis such as parasite infections. An elongated, pink, cylinder-shaped mass protruding from the anus is usually seen. Treatment of the underlying cause of tenesmus is paramount; while prolapses are usually lubricated and manually replaced by a vet, with some surgical sutures to hold it in place. However, prolapses that have been left too long, can have damaged rectal mucosal tissue and may require amputation. Anal Tumours & Rectal Polyps Signs of these abnormal growths may be straining to defecate, pain on defecation and poorly formed stools, sometimes with bleeding. Polyps are benign but a p. 4 HILLS HOWLER -MAY 2018

5 nuisance, but some anal tumours are highly malignant and need immediate veterinary attention. Anal tumours are very likely to occur in entire (non-desexed) older male dogs. Perineal Hernias These are hernias that develop next to the anus. Muscle fibres are weakened & pushed apart allowing herniation of the rectal wall, or even sometimes the bladder & prostate through the hole, which then is apparent as a bulging under the skin. Most commonly it occurs in entire male dogs 6-8 years old; in certain breeds for example Welsh Corgis, Boxers, Collies & Old English Sheepdogs to name some; or secondary to chronic constipation or prostatic disease. Signs include straining to defecate or urinate and bulging mass next to the anus. Surgery is the only option to treat this problem. Remember inability to urinate is life-threatening, so immediate veterinary attention is required. Perianal Fistulas These are infected, weeping, open wounds occurring around the anus of dogs over 7 years age usually of German Shepherd breed, but sometimes seen in setters and retrievers. We believe the cause is due to the anatomy of the tail & perianal region, as well as immune-mediated factors. Treatment involves dietary modification with topical and/or systemic antibiotics & immunosuppressives, but some dogs need to undergo surgical or more advanced procedures to resolve the issue. These are just a few things that can occur, so stop and have a think about your dog s rear end - keeping it healthy may prevent a bigger pain in the butt for you and your best friend. 6 2017 AWARDS AND TROPHIES. At our AGM on 18th April 2018, after our committee elections, the club awarded trophies and medals to members of the club who in the last 12 months have achieved multiple awards in competitions and trials with their dogs. We are in awe of these wonderful dog enthusiasts, doing so much to promote the different disciplines of dog obedience and on such a high level at that. If you have ever wondered what it's all about, you're in luck, our club is hosting our yearly trial competition on the 12th of May and we encourage all members to support the participants, better yet, there will be a tryout ring for those who would love to just have a go. A big 'Thank You' goes to Genevieve Young who is the Club's Trophy Steward and has worked hard to get all the trophies medals and paperwork that goes with it organised. As a condition of membership, all dogs are required to be properly vaccinated according to current veterinary guidelines. 2. Members are responsible at all times for the behaviour of their dog/s whilst present on the training grounds or representing the club. 3. All dogs must have properly fitted equipment and remain on lead at all times (unless instructed otherwise by a club instructor). No check/choker chains are to be used on any dogs in Puppy, Beginners or Graduate classes. 4. A member shall not ill-treat a dog at any time. Any such action may give rise to suspension or expulsion from the Club by resolution of the Committee. 5. Bitches in season and/or dog/s which are un-well or have an infectious condition are not permitted on the obedience training grounds. 6. Members are to pick up after their dog/s and help keep the grounds clean and tidy. 7. Adequate sensible dress with appropriate footwear (no thongs, scuffs or bare feet) is required to be worn by Handler during training. 8. Dogs are not to be left unattended whilst on the training grounds unless crated or tethered in a safe area. Members are reminded not to approach dogs that are confined. All dogs are to be kept under control and supervised while at the counter or in the clubhouse. 9. The Club reserves the right to ask any member to muzzle or in extreme cases, remove their dog/s from the training grounds. If a muzzle is required this must remain in place whilst on the club grounds. This will be at the discretion of the Committee. 10. Members who use Club equipment must ensure it is returned to the storeroom and stored correctly after classes are conducted. 11. Children are welcome to attend classes provided they are supervised by an adult/parent/ guardian at all times. 12. Child members (aged 7 to 11 are to be accompanied by an adult/ parent/guardian in classes) and Junior members (aged 12 to 15 under adult/parent/guardian supervision on grounds) are welcome to train providing they have sufficient control of their dog during classes. 12 NEW COMMITTEE 2018/19 You may know that the club held it's AGM on the 18th April 2018 where report was made of the previous years activities and the new committee was elected. If you like to read the minutes of that AGM or and GM that the club has, please see the office staff during training days to peruse them. Currently we do not send the minutes out to all members as a default. So I'm happy to announce that all the posts on the committee were filled for the 2018/'19 year albeit with some persons doubling up on portfolios and even Dianne taking on three of them. Having said that, we do encourage members to attend General meetings every second Wednesday of every month, except January. A club the size of HDC does not run itself and the work put in by all members of the committee is greatly appreciated, a labour of love and if you ask them, it's personally rewarding too. Introducing The K9 Companion Award An Assessment for Club Members only Hills has introduced a K9 Companion Award for Club members with dogs in Class 8 or above and will hold Assessments as follows. Monday Night 4 th June 2018 Tuesday Morning 5 th June 2018 The following elements are essential to undertake the test: Dogs must be at least 12 months of age. They must have completed our Beginner Course or be in Class 8 (or higher) of the Club s Course. Proof of Council registration/microchipping and a current vaccination or equivalent certificate. The dog should be presented in a clean and tidy manner. The dog should be fitted with an appropriate collar or restraint for that dog (i.e. collar, gentle collar, head collar and harness), and be on a leash. Note No check chains are to be used. The Handler must carry a plastic bag at all times to clean up after his/her dog. Training treats are not to be given during exercises. Verbal praise is, however, permitted. The Handler may offer food rewards at the finish of each individual exercise. A number of both verbal and hand cues are permitted during exercises. The Handler must have an 80% pass rate on the theory assessment and 100% on the practical assessment. If you do not achieve 100% in your practical assessment, you will be able to re-sit the practical test without charge when the next K9 Assessments are held.
