3 NOTICE BOARD CANADIAN ESKIMO DOGS GAIN FCI RECOGNITION The Canadian Kennel Club is pleased to announce that the indigenous dog of the Canadian arctic -- the Canadian Eskimo Dog (CED) -- has been officially accepted by the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) on a definitive basis in Group 5 under standard #211. The breed is eligible for entry in working class at all FCI international CACIB shows. We are delighted at the prospect for international exposure and growth for this native Canadian breed. FINAL REQUEST FOR MEMBERS TO SETTLE THEIR OUTSTANDING BALANCES CKC is steadily moving forward with an enhanced computer system, offering users an improved online experience with tools that make doing business with CKC much simpler and faster. The new system will be pay-as-you-go, which requires a credit card, Visa Debit, cheque or bill payment through your financial institution. When the system is implemented, later this year, all orders must be paid up front and member credit will no longer be available. In order to ensure a smooth transition with the new system, we are requesting that members who have an amount owing, please settle their account before July 1, Thank you to all members who responded to our previous communications and have settled their account. For any members who still have a credit balance, there are three options: Request that the credit be transferred to the new system (credit must exceed $10). Donate the credit balance to CKC Foundation, for which a tax receipt will be provided (for donations of $20 or more). Request a refund be mailed to you. Members who have a credit balance should contact Membership Services to inform us of their decision. Please contact Membership Services at , (toll-free), or at information@ckc.ca 2018 CKC AGM A RESOUNDING SUCCESS The 2018 Annual General Meeting was a roaring success with 94 attendees, many of whom took advantage of the opportunity to address the board directly on a variety of subject matters. Held in conjunction with the AGM, the CKC Seminar featuring two renowned expert guest speakers brought in just under 70 people from those just getting started with their breeding programs to those who have been breeding purebred dogs for decades. Also held alongside the AGM, the Member Recognition Reception was enjoyed by a lively group who gathered to celebrate the contributions and achievements of long-time local members. As many members eagerly await the new IT4YOU program to launch, attendees were given a sneak peek by Pavliks. com who provided a live demonstration. The new system is expected to help members gain a sense of control over vital information on their dogs and CKC business. Members will have access to numerous applications online, and they will have the ability to easily track the progress of each application as it is processed by CKC. We are excited about this development, which will take the organization in an innovative new direction. With an anticipated launch in Fall 2018, we look forward to introducing our membership to the new IT4YOU system and providing support as needed along the way. The 2017 CKC Annual Report was presented, and what a fabulous presentation it was! Containing data of interest and importance to members, the report itself is always expanding; this year s report was beautifully put together with member-contributed photography. As you will see upon reading through the Annual Report, we have some extraordinarily talented members. Former board member Thora Brown and her husband Allan, both 50-year members, were recognized for their long standing involvement and lasting contributions, particularly with gun dog breeds. Joey Nattrass, a 70-year member, was recognized for achievements with Chow Chows and the establishment of the well-known, much appreciated MJN show services. Both the Browns and Joey Natrass are esteemed leaders in the purebred dog fancy in this country, and we were excited to recognize and celebrate their contributions to our sport and to this organization. A rapidly growing breeder education initiative, the CKC Seminar, featured expert speakers Dr. Gayle Watkins, Ph.D, and Dr. Laurie Larson, DVM. Dr. Watkins discussed the raising, management, and use of stud dogs, as well as timing breedings to maximize the chance of success, while Dr. Larson addressed several aspects of canine vaccination schedules and 2 JULY 2018

4 NOTICE BOARD antibody testing and the implications to breeding programmes and breeders. The CKC owes its existence to dedicated and talented breeders across the country, and as such, the organization is committed to supporting breeder education. The Member Recognition Reception was a wonderful evening where long-time local members who have contributed positively to the growth of the purebred dog fancy in Canada were recognized for their tremendous efforts. Bytown Dog Obedience Club has promoted responsible dog ownership through its members focus on obedience; Squibs Mercier has encouraged and supported countless exhibitors as well as juniors through her involvement with the Ottawa Junior Kennel Club; Kim Aston and Peter Culumovic of Laureate Shetland Sheepdogs have built an exemplary breeding programme; Charlie Simonds, has a distinguished volunteer history with CKC, having served the CKC Disciplinary Committee for over 16 years, was a member of the Board of Directors and was a cofounder of the CKC Foundation, just to name a few of his roles; Bob Rowbotham s vision and commitment to organizational growth as Chair of the Board for the past three years and a Director for six years prior to that. Thank you to zone Director Thomas Nesbitt for his invaluable contribution to this year s Member Recognition Reception success. Last but definitely not least, we would like to thank our many sponsors, without whom the AGM and associated events would not have been the great successes that they were. QUEBEC GOVERNMENT REMOVES BREED SPECIFIC LEGISLATION FROM BILL 128 CKC is pleased to report that the Quebec government, after finding there was no scientific consensus that breed specific legislation (BSL) is effective or enforceable, will be amending Bill 128 by removing the breedspecific provisions that deemed select breeds as potentially dangerous. Public Security Minister Martin Coiteux has made it clear that Bill 128 will move forward with stricter rules in place regarding dog breeders and dangerous dogs, regardless of breed, in order to protect the citizens of Quebec. Bill 128 was introduced in early 2017 and proposed breedspecific laws with the capacity to ban dogs listed as potentially dangerous province-wide and opened the door for new breeds to be added at any time. CKC, along with a number of like-minded organizations, recently presented to the Quebec Parliamentary Committee during special consultations and public hearings for Bill 128, which took place in March The City of Montreal also held public consultations this spring in preparation for a new animal control bylaw, after suspending its breed-specific laws on December 20, The new Montreal animal control bylaw is expected mid-june. Thanks to all of our members who participated in the Montreal consultations, provided feedback on Bill 128 and made their voice count. CKC has always maintained that well-crafted dangerous dog legislation that is reasonable, enforceable and nondiscriminatory along with public awareness and education, stronger enforcement of existing bylaws and stiffer penalties for irresponsible owners is more effective at protecting the public. The Quebec legislation is expected to be updated before the National Assembly closes for the summer and will be shared with members once available. NEW NUMBER SYSTEM FOR DOGS ENTERING SHOWS AS LISTED This year, CKC is moving forward with an enhanced computer system, offering users an improved online experience with tools that make doing business with CKC much simpler and faster. It will also accommodate the submission of electronic event results. To facilitate these new processes, each dog must be able to be identified by the system (i.e. have a unique number). When the system is implemented, CKC will initiate a new process requiring all recognized breeds that are considered listed dogs entering events to obtain a Temporary Competition Number (TCN). The TCN allows a dog that is eligible for CKC registration or an Event Registration Number (ERN), to participate in CKC events. Temporary Competition Numbers must be obtained before the closing date of entries. Once the dog is permanently registered or has an ERN, the TCN will no longer be valid. While there is no fee for the Temporary Competition Number, exhibitors will still be required to pay listing fees when entering events. The request for a TCN will be self-serve; exhibitors will be KENNEL AND BENCH 3

5 NOTICE BOARD directed to the CKC website to complete an online application and a TCN will be issued instantly. Exhibitors may also obtain a TCN by completing a printed application and submitting it to the CKC, or by contacting the Shows and Trials Division by telephone. This initiative was passed by the Board and is effective July 1, 2018; however, the Temporary Competition Numbers will not be available until the new system is implemented. In the meantime, we will continue to provide updated communication regarding this matter. The Temporary Competition Numbers will also allow results to be posted sooner. As the launch date for the new computer system approaches, and throughout the transition, CKC will be working with clubs and event secretaries, and will provide members with updates, and postings on ckc.ca and Facebook. 7 CANADIAN KENNEL CLUB MISSION STATEMENT Who We Are The Canadian Kennel Club is a national, member-based, non-profit organization, incorporated under the Animal Pedigree Act of Canada. It provides registry services for all officially recognized breeds of purebred dogs and provides governance for all CKC approved shows, trials and events. Finally, the CKC is a communication organization informing all people interested in dogs. Mission The Canadian Kennel Club will service its membership and the community at large by giving support, understanding, help and guidance in all their canine-related endeavors. CKC will work so that members will be proud of their affiliation. The Club will recognize, promote, and publicize the actions of responsible breeders and owners. Vision The Canadian Kennel Club, with its members, will be a dynamic service organization, a recognized authority for purebred dogs, and an advocate for all dogs.
