1 Tarheel Weimaraner Newsletter, March 2011 Officers of the Club Pres. Betta Breuhaus (919) VP Eric Libow (919) Sec. Joan Mulford (561) Treas. See write-ups in this newsletter. Our next upcoming events will be our Intro To Tracking seminar April 9/10 and Bark Around the Park April 16. See page 2 for more information. We will likely have a general meeting and swim/retrieving day in May or early June. Stay tuned for more information, and plan to attend. We can still use volunteers for our agility trial in July. Betta Breuhaus A Letter from our Rescue President Spring Greetings from all Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue Board members and volunteers go out to fellow Tarheel Weimaraner Club members - - Unfortunately along with Spring and especially Summer travels, we see a large increase of Shelter drop offs. The last couple of weeks brought 7 Weimaraners to TWR, most of them younger dogs, most of them very thin, covered with ticks and of course frightened. With shelter dogs, our Veterinary expenses are always high as most dogs are intact and require extensive Veterinary care. We also find that lately our adoption applications are not as plentiful as they used to be, we are lucky to get two or three applications per week. The good news is that our volunteer base is ever increasing as so many of our "Regulars" are eager and willing to help out on a moments notice. We especially would like to thank TWC member Helen Sanderford for rushing to her local shelter to check on"star" a Weimaraner that truly only had a very short time left before being scheduled for euthanasia. Helen took photos and gave us a temperament report on this young dog. "Star" is now in foster care and is proving to be a very sweet dog, that will make someone very happy. During our Spring Tarheel Weimaraner Club meeting, TWR was able to sell $ worth of Raffle tickets - thank you fellow club members for your generosity! Officers of Rescue Pres. 2 Letter From Rosi continued: We have some great raffle items that we are planning to raffle off at our Fall "Weim and Cheese" event. Please go to our website for information on how to purchase tickets. One of our very special items is Virginia Alexander's new edition of the wonderful book Weimaraner Way's. This book is signed by the author and also famous photographer William Wegman, it features a personalized cartoon drawing of a Weim sipping wine! I will take this time to send our thoughts and prayers for Virginia Alexander, who has suffered some serious health problems. "Ginny" has been a great supporter of Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue and Weimaraner Rescue in general - she truly has the best interest of all our Weimaraners at heart, not only the fortunate show, hunt and performance dogs, but also the unwanted, unloved, and abused Weims. We wish her a speedy recovery. Please enjoy the Spring time and hug your beloved gray friends. Rosi Adams - April 9-10 Intro to Tracking An introduction to tracking workshop will be held in Snow Camp, NC, Apr This is currently full, but if you are interested, contact Helen Sanderford to be put on the waiting list. There will be a second workshop, but the dates have not yet been determined. 3 Rescue Report: During February and March, Rescue placed 5 Weims in their new homes. We currently have 12 dogs on the website awaiting adoption with more coming in every day. Please keep them in your thoughts, they are all eagerly awaiting a forever home of their own. Meet our sweet boy Gage: It came to our attention that a disabled soldier unable to make ends meet was not only facing the prospect of losing his house but was additionally tasked with having to find a new home for his beloved gray friend, Gage. He contacted Rescue in hopes that we might be able to help. This soldier had contacted other rescue organizations and shelters in Virginia and North Carolina. He heard the same thing from each and every one of them - nobody was going to take in an 8 year old, diabetic Weimaraner. TWR feels strongly that the men and woman currently serving our country, often facing lengthy deployments and the sorrows of leaving their families and dogs behind, should receive special attention and our support. This is especially true for our returning Heroes who return home in some cases facing great physical, emotional and financial hardships. Therefore we agreed to take in this special older dog. We were aware that Gage was diabetic and that the disease was well under control with daily insulin injections. We also knew that Gage was overweight. What we didn't know until this sweet older dog arrived at his foster home was that he is completely blind. Gage suffers from cataracts in both eyes. We had thought there was a chance we could adopt out a sweet fluffy diabetic Weimaraner eventually. But being blind seemed to make that possibility a long shot. After consulting our Rescue Veterinarian it seemed that with a special surgery there was the possibility that Gage s eyesight could be restored. A Specialty Vet will perform the surgery to both eyes. Once the cataract surgery is performed, Gage will get his sight back and the surgery will not need to be repeated. This comes at a price of course, probably in the neighborhood of $2, after a 10% rescue discount. Not what we had hoped for after the recent veterinary costs with Joey, Hunter, Bones and Jones. On March 8, Gage had successful cataract surgery. The day before, he was tentatively feeling his way around the house, slowly trying to walk up and down stairs, afraid of his new surroundings. By the very next day, he was running in the yard for the first time and playing! His first vet check went very well and his eyes are doing great. This is a permanent repair with no chance that the cataracts will return. We are excited for Gage and are looking forward to finding that special forever home! Christine Flock Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue Secretary Rescue T Shirts and Bandanas! Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue has tee shirts and bandanas for sale to support our rescue program. 5 The second dog and handler team to qualify at a Variable Surface Test in the State of North Carolina did so at our test in Pinehurst on Sunday, March 6, Lynn Berry and her Maltese Deacon, now CT Jordan s Shooting Star, CD MX MXJ, took 80 minutes to pass their 638 yard track. Deacon and Lynn followed a 3 hour old track over grass, asphalt, cement, brick, and mulch, and found the articles of metal, plastic, cloth, and leather. If I have counted correctly, we now have an 8.3% pass rate in our VST tests, which is pretty close to the National VST average. Thanks so much to judges Ed Presnall and Mary Thompson, to tracklayers Carol Parron, Gretchen Stephenson, Susan Baldridge, and Joe Haggerty, and to committee member Louisa Arendt. Helen Sanderford, Chair and Secretary Dues Notices have been ed out to everyone. Dues are due as of July 1, and considered lapsed as of September 1. If you would like to make a donation to Rescue, please include a separate check made out to TWR. Rescue donations are tax deductible. Contact Helen Sanderford if you have any questions BOB: CH RISSANA HILLWOOD'S JUST PLAIN PERFECT meeting/dinner this year was in a new venue, the Backyard Bistro. It turned out to be a great choice. Thanks also go to Eric and Stacy Libow for organizing and chairing the event, to Jack Sappenfield for creating our unique Sweeps and BOB Awards, to Lucy Sappenfield and Rusty Jenrette for organizing the dinner and being diligent during the show to make sure everyone who wanted to come got a ticket. Cissy Memorial Trophy Awarded to Rogue for Fourth Time The Cissy Memorial Championship trophy was established by Gene Dagenhart some years ago to honor and encourage amateur handlers in the field. This revolving trophy is awarded to the Weimaraner that accumulates the most points in Amateur Gun Dog and Amateur All-Age stakes and their amateur, owner, handler, club member. The number of points is based on the WCA Top Ten List. Tim and Elaine Carwile have just been notified that their Rogue (FC/AFC Aztec s Midnight Shift) has been awarded this trophy for a fourth time! This comes after completing a very successful 2010 wherein he finished 3rd in the WCA s All Age/Gun Dog Top-Ten List. Rogue was beautifully trained and campaigned early in his career by Scott Beyer, during which time he won the WCA s National Futurity in Ardmore, OK and earned his Field Championship and many all-breed placements, all with consistently stylish bird work and yeoman application on the ground. He earned his Amateur Field Championship in April 2010 at the Garden State Weimaraner trial at Medford, NJ, with a 3-point major retrieving stake win. Rogue first won the Cissy trophy in 2006 and, Tim frankly admits that, until now, no one had checked the records for subsequent years. He s honored to accept the award on Rogue s behalf as the repeat winner for 2008, 2009 and 2010! This is the fifth time that Tim has handled a Cissy trophy winner. In 2003, the Carwile s Bayley (Ch. Ardreem Thunder Under Foot, CDX SH SD NRD VX UKC CD ASCA CDX CDC-TDI) received the honor. Tim and Elaine report that Rogue is perhaps the most overtly affectionate Weimaraner they ve ever met and they are truly humbled and grateful to have him as a member of their family. Though Rogue celebrated his ninth birthday in November, he doesn t appear to have lost a step and Tim intends to continue to campaign him selectively in all-breed trials this spring and fall.
