So, you may just find that English Springer Spaniel you were looking for. Dogs are surrendered for multiple reasons and, many times, it is for behavior that is common to the breed and the human did not do their homework before getting the dog. How, you may ask, could that happen For starters, movies are never a good thing where dogs, or any animal, are concerned. Collies and Dalmatians are two perfect examples of breeds that have been harmed and overbred because of the movies. The Disney movie, 101 Dalmatians rated extremely high on the cute factor but the movies never really tell you about the breed. Dalmatians, for example, have a very high energy level. After the movie came out, the demand from parents wanting to get an adorable Dalmatian pup for their kids, brought out the backyard breeders who are only in it for the money, never for the health and well-being of the breed. As a result, you get health and behavior problems in addition to what behavior is normal for the breed. Suddenly, that cute puppy turns into a problem that the family cannot, or is not, willing to handle. Usually, within six months (on average) after the movie comes out, the puppies/dogs start showing up in the shelters. There was actually a woman, running a rescue in Florida, who took in over 100 purebred Dalmatians six months to a year after the movie came out. Several years later, when the last Lassie movie came out, the Collie rescues and Collie breed clubs (knowing what was coming), stationed themselves outside of movie theatres providing information, and answering questions about the breed. When possible, dogs were present as well so people could see their coats and temperaments. As a result, the rush on collie puppies was kept under control and the Collie groups did not have the same problems that the Dalmatian breed did. But, what about the mixed breeds you see in shelters? Many times, you can see the breed mix that a dog is, it is so obvious. And don t always go with the shelter s label on the dog s breed mix. I remember the purebred foxhound that showed up in our local shelter and they had an absurd breed mix label on him. I have a Border Collie/Corgi mix. He is black and white like a Border Collie but his head and face are all Corgi. Border Collies have tons of energy and require a job to do while Corgis are single minded and like to rule the roost. Fortunately for us, our little guy, Squirt, (Cont d on page 2) 1

2 Know Your Breed (Cont d from Page 1) Helping PAWS Pet Rescue August 2016 wasn t high energy and is perfectly happy being lower in the pack rank in our house. But it very well could have been completely different. We were smart enough to do some research before adopting our Squirt. I also have a Collie/Sheltie mix. The coat may be the same but the temperament is extremely different between the two breeds. The coat can be an issue too. The rough (long) coats require brushing, at least once a week. I can t tell you how many times a collie has been surrendered because their owner didn t realize how much they shed. Well, they have a double coat for working outside. That coat gets quite thick in the winter months and shedding is always an event in our house. We brush enough hair off one dog that you could make another dog out of it. We put the fur outside in a special container that the birds can access so they can use the hair for their nests. And, both breeds are barkers. Why? Because their job is/was as herders and they need to communicate with the Shepherd in the field. Barking/vocalizing is a requirement for that job. With training, you can usually contain the behavior and not have a problem. But, being vocal, is a breed characteristic you should be aware of. When we lived in New Jersey, our town had a barking law. If a dog barked for more than 10 minutes, you could be fined $150. That can start to add up. So you can see just a few of the reasons that dogs are surrendered. Oh, and the owner/surrenders always lie when surrendering the dog. They say thing like the kids have allergies so, you never really know what the real reason for surrender was. Knowing the breed can help you there. Don t rely solely on the internet for your information when doing your research. The internet is a great place to start but, if you know you want a certain breed, contact the breed club. Even where breed mixes are concerned, they are a big help. They want a dog to have a solid, loving home so they are usually happy to answer your questions. For instance, say you want a collie. Look at the Collie Club of America website. There, you will see a list of state district representatives and their contact info. You can then contact a person in your state to help you decide if a collie is the right dog for you. If needed, they can even direct you to a breeder in your area or close to you. Most of the other breed clubs have similar structures. Additionally, go to a dog show(s) in your area. Look at the dogs, talk to the breeders. It is a great place to learn! When we wanted a smooth (short hair) collie, we were living in New Jersey just over the river from New York City. So, we headed for the Westminster Dog Show. We found out tons of information on the breed, including the fact that not all collie breeders breed smooth coated dogs. We also found out that the smooth coats tend to be a little more spirited, curious and mischievous than the rough coats. We have had several smooth and rough coated collies. Both are wonderful but the roughs are different from the smooths in more than just coat. So, I hope I have started you thinking. Doing your homework before adopting any dog helps assure that both you and your dog will be happy and enjoy a long life together. Happy tails!! 2

3 Helping PAWS Pet Rescue August 2016 Harlow Louise McKinney who defeated her 6 opponents by amassing 234 votes, 31 votes more than her closest competitor! PAWTUS 2016 was scheduled to be inaugurated during Brownstone Days after the Pet Pageant. However, due to a medical emergency with her mom, Harlow Louise was unable to make it. We suspect she was too busy holding her mom s paw during the ordeal. Her inauguration will be held later in a private ceremony, and we hope to be able to capture the event in photos at that time. Pictured here are a plaque, goodie basket, and other prizes for our new PAWTUS. May she be a benevolent ruler! It was reported by a Pet Pageant attendee that one young child was seen hugging Harlow Louise s plaque, and rumor has it that he attends The Rookery Nook ( All PAWS crossed for Mom McKinney s swift recovery! 5 Pet Pageant a Great Success By Scoop McCalla Helping PAWS Pet Rescue August 2016 Helping PAWS has participated in Brownstone Days for many years, but this years experience was the best ever. The HPPR booth and the Pet Pageant moved to a new, more central location and the public response was overwhelming. The pageant included several much-loved events such as the Best Costume contest, Best Trick contest and Best Kisser contest, and this year HPPR added a new event in which the judges were asked to pick the pet and owner who looked most alike. Of course there was also a Best in Show event which was won by a delightful little rescue dog named Snow White (shown at top right). After all of the hard work of these events, contestants cooled off by bobbing for hot dogs! Although most of the contestants were dogs, we were also pleased to welcome two equine contestants as well as a handsome and brave kitty named Harold. In addition to the Pet Pageant, HPPR sold merchandise that included t-shirts, leashes and collars, and tasty cat and dog treats. Donations were accepted and attendees were very generous. Four lovable, adoptable, HPPR kittens also attended the event and brightened everyone s day with their fuzzy adorableness. These kittens reminded everyone of the good work that Helping PAWS does every day. HPPR s participation in Brownstone Days was also the perfect occasion to acknowledge our receipt of a generous grant from The Petco Foundation. This $2,500 grant was matched by another donor, so HPPR now has sufficient funds to begin the long-awaited expansion project that will allow us to convert an outbuilding at Country Care Pet Hospital into additional housing for our animals. This space can also be used as an isolation room for potentially infectious intakes. Another new and highly successful event was the micro-chip clinic. Many dogs and owners left the Pet Pageant with the security of knowing that if lost, their pet would have a much improved chance of finding their way home. The micro-chipping was done by Dr. Gretchen Gerber for a significantly reduced fee, with the proceeds benefiting HPPR a win for everyone! In addition to all of these events, there was also a drawing for a Bissell Spot Cleaner which was generously donated to Helping PAWS by the Bissell Corporation. The sale of raffle tickets for this drawing raised even more money for our expansion project. Cont d on Page 6 5

6 Helping PAWS Pet Rescue August 2016 Pet Pageant a Great Success (Cont d from Page 5) All in all, the 2016 Helping PAWS Pet Pageant was a huge success. The weather was perfect, the events were great fun, the attendance was record setting, and the funds raised will enable HPPR continue its mission to help the animals of Washburn/Bayfield/ Ashland. Thank you to everyone who participated and everyone who donated. Editor s Note: The Bissell SpotCleaner was won by Debbie McCormick and Ruby, her beautiful Springer Spaniel. 8 Helping PAWS Pet Rescue August 2016 Petco Foundation Invests In Lifesaving Work of Helping PAWS Pet Rescue, Inc. Washburn, WI July 30, 2016 Helping PAWS Pet Rescue, Inc. of Washburn, today announced it has been awarded a $2,500 grant from the Petco Foundation to support its conversion of an existing space at Country Care Pet Hospital into an Isolation Unit. Helping PAWS Pet Rescue, Inc. is a nonprofit organization, the purpose of which is to promote animal welfare through aggressive community outreach and education. Helping PAWS serves Ashland and Bayfield Counties and the surrounding area of Northern Wisconsin and Northeast Minnesota. Since 2006, Helping PAWS has saved hundreds of lives through rescue, rehabilitation and adoption and has accomplished nearly a thousand low cost or free spays and neuters. Our community outreach and intership programs have impacted hundreds of grade school, high school, and college students and their families The Petco Foundation investment will help to launch Phase 1 of our 5-part Isolation Unit Project. Once completed, the area will be used to evaluate new intakes before they are introduced into the Helping PAWS population of adoptable pets; treat contagious illnesses; and, when not housing infectious individuals, will allow us to segregate vulnerable newborn kittens and their moms from the rest of the rescue population. This Petco Foundation Grant will enable Helping PAWS to launch a lifesaving expansion of our facility, allowing us to care for sick and potentially infectious intakes and to protect the youngest and most vulnerable of kittens. Because of a matching funds pledge from an anonymous donor, the Petco Foundation s generosity is doubly valuable. The commencement of the project will generate excitement and added involvement within the community and will expand our local rescue efforts, said Mahlon Bauman, Chairman of the Board and Financial Officer. For more information about Helping PAWS Pet Rescue, Inc. or the Petco Foundation, visit or Join the conversation on Facebook or by using the hashtag #PetcoFoundation. About Helping PAWS Pet Rescue, Inc. Helping PAWS Pet Rescue, Inc. was founded for the sole purpose of helping to stop the suffering of companion animals caused by homelessness, overpopulation, and mistreatment. The goal of the organization is that no adoptable companion animal ever be euthanized for lack of medical care and a good home. This goal is not limited to dogs and cats, but extends equally to horses, rabbits, birds and other domestic species. Homeless and unwanted animals are offered not just a humane alternative, but are provided in each case the best possible process that would result in each individual pet finding its forever-home. This organization's mission is unique in that it includes not only young, healthy homeless pets, but also owner surrenders and individuals with medical needs that would cause them to be rejected by or euthanized by other organizations About the Petco Foundation At the Petco Foundation, we believe that every animal deserves to live its best life. Since 1999, we ve invested more than $167 million in lifesaving animal welfare work to make that happen. With our more than 4,000 animal welfare partners, we inspire and empower communities to make a difference by investing in adoption and medical care programs, spay and neuter services, pet cancer research, service and therapy animals, and numerous other lifesaving initiatives. Through our Think Adoption First program, we partner with Petco stores and animal welfare organizations across the country to increase pet adoptions. So far, we ve helped more than 5 million pets find their new loving families, and we re just getting started. Visit petcofoundation.org to learn about how you can get involved. 8
