1 TO HOME.PETFINDER.COM Summer 2009 NEWSLETTER DEDICATION The Haven to Home Newsletter is dedicated to all of the past, PRESENT and future Haven to Home Foster Families. Without our foster families there would be no Haven to Home. Willingness to open hearts and homes for orphaned dogs has allowed Haven to Home to place over 170 dogs in our short existence. Our foster families are truly the Haven in Haven to Home. They are very much appreciated for all their efforts as we strive to help homeless dogs in the Central Pennsylvania Susquehanna Valley. THANK YOU! Dear Friends, MESSAGE FROM ROBIN It has been a little over one year since Haven to Home Canine Rescue was born. In that year we have accomplished many things. First and foremost, we have secured on the average of 10 active foster homes. They are the heart of what we do, and truly the haven for dogs in need. We have completed a list of legalities, including acquiring our non-profit and tax-exempt status in PA. And, after a long wait, we finally received our 501(c) (3) status and this has opened the door for funding opportunities. Most importantly and impressively we have managed to rescue and place over 170 dogs into loving homes!! Jodi Swartz joined the pack as our new Newsletter Editor. Welcome Jodi!! Penny Coup came on board with her experience with Grant Writing. She has recently submitted three and we will have to wait a few months to see if we qualify for those monies. Thank you, Penny! While we are patiently waiting, we need a little help to pay those ever increasing vet bills. Therefore, if you haven t already, could you please take a moment to complete the attached membership/volunteer form? This will also help to defray the cost of publishing and mailing our newsletter. As a dues paying member, you will receive our Quarterly Newsletter to keep you updated on our activities. If you have adopted a dog from us your first year is FREE! I would like to express my sincere and heartfelt appreciation to all of our board members, officers, volunteers and supporters who believed in us and helped us to be what we are today--- a very successful canine rescue!!! Thank you for helping us to continue to save lives and enrich homes with canine companions! Sincerely, Robin Montgomery, President The core of Haven to Home can be summed up by our mission statement Our mission is to rescue dogs in need, rehabilitate them in a quality, nurturing environment, and re-home them in a loving, responsibly, permanent home as soon as possible. We will strive to promote a culture of kindness in our community through networking and education. A House is not a home without a dog.
2 PAGE 2 TO HOME.PETFINDER.COM THE HAVEN IN HAVEN TO HOME We are always looking to add new foster homes to our network. Fostering a dog in need is a wonderful and personal way to contribute to saving lives. We will only be able to witness continued success with a strong and active network of foster care families. We are always in need of willing, able and caring people to share a small (sometimes big) portion of their lives with a dog down on his/her luck. Your efforts will make a huge difference in not only their life but yours as well. Those interested in fostering should contact Linda Hafer at rushmere1@aol.com. We are looking for a foster coordinator. This person would be responsible for receiving foster family applications, home visits and to check-in with our foster families for any needs. If you are interested in this position, please contact Linda Hafer at the above address. Fostering Rowse Howse Style We adopted our first dog, Peppermint Patty, in 2007 from the Binghamton SPCA and immediately began the search for a companion for her. Charleston Chew was added to the family in December through a contact with Cindy Crozier. After much discussion, fostering seemed the perfect fit. Fostering allows us to be flexible, introduces us to different types of dogs, and offers constant companionship. Being a military family, it was difficult to have pets while moving around and living in Army housing. We kept it small with rabbits and cats. Once we arrived in PA, we began the search for the perfect dog. Little did we know that 5 perfects would join us! We are fortunate enough to live on a small farm with 10 fenced acres. Our foster friends are treated like our own. They lounge on the couch, romp through the fields, sleep on the bed, and pretty much have run of the place. Although, our furniture is not beautiful, our bed comforters are not white, and the mudroom brings new meaning to the word mud, we wouldn t trade it for anything. Melissa and Rob have been married for 8 years. Melissa is the library director of the Montgomery House Warrior Run Area Public Library in McEwensville. Rob retired from the Army after 20 years and is a farmer. Visit us online at: Hi my name is Sadie and I have been patiently waiting for my FOREVER home. I can't understand why no one has come for me because I have so much love to give. I just turned six on April 11 and I am medium to large in size. My coat has been clipped due to neglect but when grown out it is beautiful, thick, long hair which is soft and fluffy when I am kept groomed. People say I look like a golden retriever mix. I am a little shy at first, but I warm up quickly. I haven't had a very good life so far. I was adopted from a shelter in April 2008 only to be abandoned by my owner. I was very sad and scared. Later I found myself tied to a dog house outside. I was fed regularly but no one paid attention to me. It was very disheartening because I was hoping for a loving indoor home with people who love me. When I was little, no one cared enough to socialize me so I haven't learned to play with other dogs. The lady who is caring for me lets me play with one of her dogs, and I have been having fun. The nice lady who walks me says I am smart and trainable. I love to run and play so it would be great to be adopted by someone who likes to run and/or has a fenced in yard. My friend walks me with a gentle leader and I am doing great she says. I offer my paw for treats (yum), and I know how to lay down on command. I am currently attending obedience classes. If you adopt me, I promise to be your loyal and forever friend. Please take me home.
3 PAGE 3 A HAVEN TO HOME HAPPY TAIL Lilly Belle had a litter of puppies and then was relinquished by her owner. She went from her home to a wonderful foster home for some R&R after weaning her puppies, getting spayed, and recovering from some minor health issues. She never made it to Pet Finder for adoption because she and her foster mom fell in love at first sight. She now has a brother Gus (yellow lab) and sister Dally (chocolate) and a human mom and dad who love her very much. Diamond Lil and her sister, Dally, enjoy romping through their big old farm house and going to the barn with mom and the horses. Older brother Gus is glad she came to play with Dally so he can get some rest! MEET LETTIE! Lettie is a sweet lil' ole Beagle girl. She was a breeder in a puppy mill and no longer has her girlish figure. She has most recently been in a home with kids and other dogs, but lost her home due to the family's economic situation. She is now living in a multi dog foster home and likes to play with the big labs there, but usually just for short bursts. Foster mom says she is housebroken. She is supposed to be between 6 and 8 years old, but can still go for good sniffing walks, like proper Beagles do. She has been spayed and completely vetted, including a dental, which included 10 extractions!! Yikes! She is sweeter than the dickens and has THEE softest, long Beagle ears. Some of those helpful activities include dog transportation, fundraising, adopt-a-thons, dog handling events, home visits, and exercising with a dog. Donations are always welcomed as well. We currently are in need of dog food (Purina or Pedigree preferred), leashes, postage stamps, crates (all sizes), toys, treats, blankets, beds, stainless steel dog dishes, feeding stands, Lupine combo or Premier Martingale collars. If you shop online consider shopping through I Give. Go to and select Haven to Home as your cause. Monetary donations are always needed and appreciated. 5 PAGE 5 SUMMER PET TIPS Never Leave your Pet in the Car In nice weather you may be tempted to take your pet with you in the car while you travel or do errands. But during warm weather, the inside of your car can reach 120 degrees in a matter of minutes, even if you re parked in the shade. This can mean real trouble for your companion animals left in the car. Dogs and cats can t perspire and can only dispel heat by panting and through the pads of their feet. Pets can suffer from heat exhaustion, heat stroke, brain damage and can die. Don t think that just because you ll be gone just a minute that your pet will be safe while you re gone. Please play it safe by leaving your pet safe at home during the summer months. If you do happen to see a pet in a car alone during the hot summer months, alert the management of the store where the car is parked. If the owner does not return promptly, call local animal control or the police department immediately. Fresh Water Pets and pools can equal disaster. Prevent free access to pools and always supervise a pet in a pool. Provide plenty of water and shade for your pets while they re enjoying the great outdoors so they can stay cool. Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. If you run or walk your dog, please do so in the early morning or late evening, when temperature and humidity are usually lower. Asphalt, sand and concrete can become very hot in extreme sun. These hot surfaces can cause significant damage to pets paws. Limit exposure to these surfaces and ensure that dogs have cooler surfaces, such as dirt and grass available to them. LOOKING FOR THEIR FOREVER HOME Skylar 4 Male Puppies! 4 Female Puppies!
