As many of you may know, Elicia Calhoun is a well known professional agility trainer as well a former world team member. On June 11 th, she had a terrible rollover car accident on her way home to Arizona from a dog show in Texas. All six of her dogs were thrown from her vehicle which included her 16 week old kelpie puppy who was killed on impact. Elicia found herself alone in her car. She feared that the car might catch fire and immediately climbed out through the windshield. Her first concern was where are my dogs. She was able to locate 3 of her border collies but her puppy Tsunami, her aussie Nika and her red border Tobie were missing. Elicia recalls is that she was well rested after going to bed early and rose early the next morning. She was returning home and thinking about preparations for an upcoming trip to Hawaii and Japan to teach a seminar. She was not asleep at the wheel but she knew that she was not mentally alert and planned to leave the highway at the next exit 1 mile away. 1

2 The Water Dish Continued Her puppy Tsunami was the only dog that was in a crate. The crate was fastened to the front seat with bungee cords. She would have normally used ratchet straps, but because she was in and out of hotels that weekend, she tried to save some time. Her other 5 dogs were asleep behind her. Someone assisted her by taking the 3 found dogs to an emergency vet while an ambulance took her to the hospital. Elicia has rods in her back due to having scoliosis when she was younger. She suffered a punctured lung but checked herself out of the hospital to search for her missing dogs. With an outpouring of help from the agility world, the search for her dogs had already begun. Tsumani was found 10 feet from the wreckage. Her aussie Nika was hit by a car and found dead about a mile away. There was no sign of Tobie anywhere. As most of us know, the agility community is packed full of fantastic people who care tremendously and look out for each other. The accident was reported on Facebook and everyone jumped into action with time, donations and whatever they had to contribute. Elicia worked with 2 animal communicators and there were many people on hand to help with the search for Tobie. Tobie and Elicia reunited the following day around noon. Whenever you travel and realize that you are not mentally alert stop and rest. Take no short cuts in your preparations. Count you friends as blessings and hug your dogs daily. Elicia Calhoun is healing and slowing returning to normal activities. Please see her webcast for more detailed questions and answers concerning her accident: Lynn Proe, Your Scooper Editor 2

5 Standing Rules to Revisit Treasury 3) c)seminars - Cost of reinbursement (not club BOD?) Plus attendence at training meetings d)free entries for Trial Chair and Chief Ring Steward Free RV Parking Trial Chair Chief Ring Steward and Equipment Wrangler This rule was passed by BOD in September 2006 (not club) even BOD vote is questionable Problem with clause Use of the entries (in full or in part) may be Carried over to future Trials The other give free RV parking for all future agility trials even if not longer in that position? Maybe a better choice would be an either /or choice. Example Free RV parking (4 days) or Free entry for 1 dog for 1 day up to four classes) The old rule does not include Treasurer or RV Chair. Randy got RV Because of his work as equipment wrangler. In any case, rule should only apply to the trial worked and not future trials. The Chief Course Builder(s) will receive one free entry per trial. Use of the entries may be carried over to future trials. An entry is defined as one dog for all entered classes all days of the trial. Only one free entry allowed per person per trial. Multiple trial positions do not warrant multiple free entries. The Trial Chairperson(s), Chief Ring Steward, Equipment Wrangler, Cheir Course Builder(s0s and RV parking attendant will receive free RV parking for the duration of the agility trial. Additonal trial entries and free RV parking may be rewarded the discretion of the Trial Chair(s) to other key trial positions to facilitate the running of the trial. Training 9) A class schedule for a least 3 months will be kept acessible by the Training Director(s). A report of students will be kept by the desk personnel. 14) Instructors that qualified for free training can redeem their free training credits even if they are no longer a MOC member. General 4) Active members are defined as members who attend at least 8 meetings per Club year or who attned 6 meetings and work at 2 club events per year. Members who cannot meet the above requirements but donate their time to participate in club activities will be considered on a one to one basis by the BOD. (Proposed) The Trial Chair person(s) and Chief Ring Steward for Obedience and Agility trials will receive on free entry per trial. 5

7 DACOF 2012 DACOF 2012 was one of the best DACOF s to date. We had the most dogs ever (453) as well as the most teams (62) and the competiveness reached a new level with the participation of some of the best dog handlers in the state. The event ran like clockwork. Hats off to Annette Smith and the rest of the DACOF Board for a well run event. MOC did not have a full team this year lacking both open and novice dogs and was not able to be competitive as far as the team standings went. In the individual standings however, MOC was easily one of the best clubs at the competition with the MOC team dogs taking home eleven placements while members running dogs on other teams grabbed another four placements for a club total of fifteen. Peter and Wien together placed eleven times with their dogs. Evie scored the third highest number of points in the 20 inch excellent class. Queenie ranked number one in the 24 inch excellent class and Wilma was forth in the same class. As usual, MOC was every where. The building of two of the three rings were the responsibility of Tracy Hanna s crew and MOC s crew. Lynn Proe performed the national anthem on day two and Tracy was honored as the recipient of the 2012 Randy Reed Award. Tracy Hanna, Recipient of the 2012 Randy Reed Award. She finished her second JWW leg in second, beating all the 20 inches Border Collies to finish in first place. When she finished, people were cheering so loud for her. With all these legs, she finished her MX and MXJ titles in Perry. Evie also did very well in DACOF. She qualified 4 out of 5 times, earning one first place, one second place, one third place, and one fourth place. She was third overall, behind two Border Collies by 2 points. We were very proud of her performance. Queenie qualified 8 out of 10 times in Perry. She had over 150 MACH points with 3 QQ. 11 Proposed USDA Regulation Comment Period Extended Until August 15 [Friday, July 13, 2012] The US Department of Agriculture (USDA)/Animal Plant Health and Inspection Service (APHIS) announced today that the comment period on the proposed regulations regarding Retail Pet Stores and Licensing Exemptions has been extended until August 15, We encourage any concerned dog owners who have not yet signed the AKC petition and/or submitted comments about this problematic proposal to take advantage of this extra time to do so. Background: This important proposal would require all who own more than four breeding females and sell even one animal sight unseen to be regulated as a commercial breeder and be subject to federal commercial breeder licensing, regulation and inspections. The term breeding female is not defined, so it is unclear how USDA or even breeders themselves would determine who falls under these regulations. The term also includes multiple species (including cats, dogs, and other small mammals). The AKC believes that the USDA s one size fits all regulations are not in the best interest of all dogs, responsible breeders, or puppy buyers. It is unreasonable and virtually impossible for many small hobby breeders to comply with the strict kennel engineering standards that were designed for large commercial operations. Visit AKC s USDA/APHIS Regulations Resource Page for more information on this proposal, including frequently asked questions, a fact sheet from APHIS, an educational handout and other resources. How You Can Help: Sign the AKC s Petition If you have not already done so, visit and join the tens of thousands who have signed our online petition in support of responsible breeders. The new petition signature deadline is August 13. Submit Comments Directly to the USDA s Animal Plant and Health Inspection Service (APHIS) You may submit comments online by clicking here. To view comments already submitted, click here. You may also mail comments to: Docket No. APHIS Regulatory Analysis and Development PPD, APHIS, Station 3A River Road, Unit 118 Riverdale, MD Both actions are important in helping send a strong, clear message to APHIS on this issue. The petition, which will be submitted with the AKC s formal comments to the USDA, will demonstrate the immense number of people who are concerned about this issue, and direct comments will help educate on exactly how this proposal will impact responsible breeders, dog owners, and puppy buyers. AKC Government Relations (AKC GR) will provide more information as it becomes available. For more information, visit AKC s USDA/APHIS Regulations Resource Page. Further questions may be directed to AKC GR at (919) or doglaw@akc.org. 11

16 Minutes of the Trainers Meeting July 19, 2012 The meeting was called to order at 7:46pm by Jane Davidson at the home of Jane Davidson and Ginny Guin. In attendance were Jane Davidson, Ginny Guin, Carol Clark, Lorraine Leal, Sherry Simon, Diane Cort, Bernadine DeJonge, Trina Chicvara, Jill Sidran, Carol Ann Klein, Vicki Phillips, David Proe and Lynn Proe. Jane gave a reminder to let students know that the CGC test given after last class. The guidelines for class sizes are as follows: Level 1 class size is 10 students maximum without an assistant or 13 maximum with an assistant. Levels 2 and 3 class sizes are a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 at the instructor s discretion. The determination that we will make about which class a handler and dog should enroll in will be based on experience level of the handler instead of the age of the dogs as well as whether they attended puppy class. There was a discussion about implementing a roving instructor to assist instructors in problem dogs so that instructor can give equal attention to students. MOC needs to use multiple media sources to promote our training classes to the public. A committee has been formed to market our training classes. The committee will include Sherry Simon as chairperson as well as members Bernadine DeJonge, Ginny Guin and Dianne Cort. Carol Clark demonstrated both the Martingale collars and the Toggle Choke collars to illustrate the correct fit. The toggle end of the collar should not reach the dog's eye. Jane reminded instructors to tell their students to register for their next classes at the 4 th class meeting and to ask the students to visit the desk before their current class starts. When an instructor must be absent, please find a substitute and let Jane know who the substitute will be. There was a discussion concerning the 2012 class schedule. The agility and obedience trial schedules should be considered when creating the class schedule. Seminar credit standing rule was considered in relation to whether credits should be used towards seminars that will enhance training classes or are they a reward for the instructor for teaching. Trina moved that it should be suggested to the membership that the standing rule should require minimum of attendance of 2 of 4 training meetings, Jane seconded the motion. Motion passes. Trina moved that seminars should serve to increase the knowledge of the membership as either a written article to be published in The Scooper or as a verbal presentation at a general meeting. All seminar documentation must be shared. Carol seconded. Motion passes. A contingency plan in the event of a cancelled classes included extending the subsequent or issuing a voucher to the student allowing them to join a class to replace the missed session. A tracking seminar is being planned. It was suggested that the membership should apply to AKC for future seminars. The obedience trial discussion included the decision that 2013 obedience trial will have 4 trials and that there would be a variety of judges. According to statistic reported by the AKC interest in obedience trials have increase. Our trials should be advertized to generate more interest as well as entries. Copies of the book What All Good Dogs Should Know: The Sensible Way to Train by Jack Volhard should be purchased t have on hand. The meeting was adjourned at 9:
