The stock market has hit recessionary lows and a very somber economic forecast is projected for 2009 but even in the worst of times dog lovers know better than anyone that you can always rely on the unconditional love and loyaltyy of 4 legged companions. I m always humbled and elevated by my dog s joy and enthusiasm for the simplest of gestures like chasing a ball or anticipating a treat. Our pet s role model each day that what matters most in life is to love and be loved. I am reminded of the acronym KISS Keep It Simple Silly. Remember to add lots of kisses to your holiday season this year! Congratulations to MOC Officer s & BOD! See you at the holiday party! Happy Trails, Sherry Happy Birthday!!! 2 Minutes of the General Meeting November 5, 2008 The meeting was called to order at 7:37 PM by President Pat Kopco at La Carreta restaurant. Cori called the roll and brags were shared. Cori motioned to waive the reading of the minutes of the previous meeting, Carol Ann seconded. Motion passed. Committees: Correspondence Cori received a newsletter from University of Florida veterinary clinic. Treasurer Obedience Trial The May 2009 trials are approved and the contract has been signed. Agility Trials Arrangements for the January 2009 agility trials are on track. Nancy A. spoke with Pablo about possible dates for October instead of the September agility trial dates. There is a choice of two weekends available, either October 15 th through October 18 th or October 22 nd through October 25 th. Trina motioned to reserve October 22 nd through October 25 th, discussion followed. Jane seconded the motion. Motion passes. Obedience Training No report. Agility Training Run thrus continue November 6 th through December 16 th. Run thrus begin again January 6 th until the January 2009 agility trials. Arrangements have been made with Pablo to groom the arena for Tuesday night run thrus. CGC Cori plans to schedule a Canine Good Citizen test for late February or early March. DACOF-. There is nothing to report at this time. DOCOF DOCOF 2009 scheduled for Labor Day weekend. Membership No report. Sunshine Angela and Brad Compton have a new baby girl. Debbie asked the membership for gift suggestions. Maria s son was hospitalized but is doing well. Education Jackie recently attended two events where there were complaints concerning people crating their dogs. The opinion of the general public at these events is that crating is an inhumane practice. Jackie warned the membership to stay with their dogs when crating at an event that the public attends to avoid the possibility of dogs being released from their crates. Jackie rescued a dog that is Kelly s brother from Dade County Animal Control. She was required to sign release papers to get the dog in her possession due to the dog being deemed as an aggressive dog. Jackie informed the membership that tags always take priority over a microchip. When a dog is in the county s possession, proof of ownership must be presented in order to take possession of the dog. Library Pat has added two tapes: Training of the Agility Dog and Agility Techniques, Obstacles and Sequence Training. Scooper Sherry mentioned that she has not been receiving very many brags to be printed in the Scooper. She is concerned whether to continue having a brag section in the Scooper and encouraged the club to remember to submit the brags as well as to keep any other dog submissions coming. Website January agility trial premium is available for download from the website. Equipment Randy may purchase clip and go strips to apply to the old jumps rather than purchasing new jumps saving the club as much as $800. Old Business The elections re-elected the following club officers President Pat Kopco, Vice President - Randy Reed, Treasurer Nancy Atkins, Corresponding Secretary - Cori Gacusana and Recording Secretary Lynn Proe. The Board of Directors are Carol Ann Klein, Jackie Kurzban, Keith Staub and David Proe. Linda checked into buying the new easels that were discussed at the October meeting and presented the club with the following options: 1)replace the easels with identical equipment or purchase easels of a better quality. Linda found that the prices ranged anywhere from $30 to $150. Erin motioned that the club should purchase two good quality easels and four inexpensive easels. Discussion followed. Motion seconded by Linda. Motion passes. Other old business included that the DOCOF team was disappointed that Jill had not been reimbursed for the orchid she purchased as a MOC DOCOF raffle donation item. Jane motioned that the club should reimburse Jill for the raffle orchid as well as all future raffles for both DACOF and DOCOF with a cap of $ Motion seconded by Erin. Motion passes. New Business Nancy B. suggested that the club should donate six gift certificates to the Greater Miami Humane Society for to be used for obedience classes. The gift certificates would be distributed as prizes during the various Greater Miami Humane Society events. Jill motioned that six generic gift certificates be donated to the Greater Miami Humane Society for dog training classes. Carol Ann seconded. Motion passes. The Greater Miami Humane Society 2-21 will host the Annual Walk in the Park. This year the event will include a lure coursing event as well as the MOC agility demonstration. Tropical Park plans to have the agricultural and cattle show in March. This year the event may include dog agility, water dog skills, and retrieving and rally/obedience demonstrations. Cori suggested that it might be a good idea for club look into a donation of a few oxygen masks to the Miami Dade County Fire Department. Carola volunteered to research where to get the masks and what the cost would be. Meeting Adjourned 9:15PM motioned by Jane and seconded by Ginny. Submitted by Wien Yu MOC Membership Chair Wien Yu, Membership Chair Minutes of the Board Meeting November 5, 2008 The meeting was called to order at 9:23 PM by President Pat Kopco at La Carreta restaurant. In attendance were Cori, Carol Ann, Dave, Randy, Lynn, Jackie, Keith and Nancy A. There was discussion concerning an alternate location for club meetings. Carol Ann remarked that too many conversations that disrupt our meeting making difficult to hear and understand what is being said. The board revisited the issue of a recent incident where a dog bites someone during a Canine Good Citizen test. Jackie told the board that the Florida State Law is that if a dog bites twice, that dog can be destroyed. If there is an incident of a dog bite, should it be mandatory to report it or should it be up to the individual. The person who was bitten usually decides if any actions should be taken. The insurance company would be notified only if the person who was bitten reports it. If the person who was bitten seeks treatment, the insurance company must be notified. The individual must state in writing that they will not take any action against the club. Dave suggested that a list of all possible scenarios should be created so that the insurance company could be queried of each circumstance. 6 The Night Before Dog-Mas by Claudine Gandolfi Twas the night before Dog-mas, When all through the pound Not a puppy was yelping, Or playing around; Our leashes were hung By our kennels with care, In hopes that St. Bernard Would soon find us there; Chihuahuas were curled up, All snug in their beds, While visions of doggie-treats Danced in their heads; Max in his collar, On somebody s lap, Had tucked in his tail For a midwinter s nap, When outside the room There arose such a clatter, My ears perked right up To hear what was the matter. Away to the window I jumped with glee, And barked at the shadows that were cast by a tree. The glow from the moon Changed night into day, And started me thinking, Woof, woof! Time to play! When, what with my puppy-dog eyes did I see, But a splendid dog-sled, Led by doggies like me, Go by the red hydrant and run past those trees! Nothing can stop you, not even some fleas! As puppies at play chase after a stick And race to their masters so lively and quick, So out in the field his canines all flew, Catching the Frisbees, that St. Bernard threw. And then in an instant, I heard at the door The scratching and clawing of each little paw. As I pulled in my nose, and was turning around, Through the door St. Bernard came in with a bound! He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his tail, His wood cask adorned with an icing of hail; A bag of chew-toys he had brought in with him, And his mouth was turned up in what looked like a grin. His eyes-how they twinkled! His ears flopped, how merry! His coat shone like crystal, his nose like a cherry! His big sloppy mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the fur on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a bone he held in his teeth, And his collar encircled his neck like a wreath; He had a large face and a furry, round belly That shook when he barked, like a bowl full of jelly. He was fluffy and plump, A big, cuddly old pooch And I laughed when I saw him and gave him a smooch. With a regal furred driver Commanding, not stern. I yelped to the others, That must be St. Bern! More rapid than greyhounds Our saviors they came, And we barked and we howled, And called them by name: There s Duchess! There s King! Fat Chance And bare Buffy! On Fido! On Scooter! On Rover and Scruffy! A wink of his eye and a wag of his tail; We knew right away we d have homes without fail. He howled not a howl, but when straight to his deed, And took down our leashes that soon we would need. He opened the door. And families stood there, With children, all smiling, and much love to spare. He leapt to his sled, To his team gave a call, And away they all flew As if chasing a ball. But I heard him exclaim as he chewed on a bone: Happy Dog-mas to all and to all a Good Home! The Scooper 6 November 2008
