3 LONE STAR SPOTLIGHT by Susan Hervey The Terv Connection I caught up with Shirley Stowe last October and got some pictures of the "Terv Connection" for "Riley", a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who has landed in a home with Tammy Cox, and is tracking with Sarah Helber and "Jordan!" Shirley shares "Riley's" story. Tammy and "Riley," Shirley and "Reba," Sarah and "Jordan" When Bob and I married, I realized my days of having high energy dogs were waning because I was aging and I knew I would be doing a lot of travelling. I still wanted to have a dog I could show in conformation and do some performance activities. As a co-founder of the Texas Pekingese Rescue for 15+ yrs., I knew that breed well but did not want to have to deal with a show Peke's "overdone" coat. I focused on the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Theresa Strader with Milldog Rescue in Colorado Springs had purchased a young male Cavalier at auction. I drove 500+ miles to meet Milldog tranport and Riley came to live with us in November '07. I remember getting him out of his travel crate and putting a leash on him...he was sooooo undersocialized and fearful he lay on the ground, flat on his tummy, all four feet splayed. I seriously wondered what his chances were for a normal life. Riley initially did not make eye contact so among the things I focused on early was rewarding him when he glanced and our eyes would meet. It was evident from day one that Riley's default response was "freeze and do nothing." Of all the activities in which I have engaged with my dogs, tracking has become my favorite. Riley could not walk with a harness on for 5 weeks, much less smell the ground and eat a treat! Boy, I was challenged with that roadblock! I tried numerous incentives to get him to move...nothing...one day I just put his harness on when I let him outside with the rest of our pack...it took him almost 10 minutes to take his first step, but once that breakthrough occurred, he was able to walk and get a treat off a track. 4 LONE STAR SPOTLIGHT, Continued Tammy and I had once spoken of our attraction to Cavaliers so, knowing he would get loads of attention from such a wonderful owner, I approached her about taking him. It was, as they say, a match made in heaven. From a puppy mill life to the high life, Riley could not have a more dedicated, knowledgeable and loving owner. He lives a charmed life these days with Tammy and his "cougar main squeeze", Marquis. He is one lucky, blessed dog. Right now I am working with a seriously traumatized Pomeranian I pulled from El Paso Animal Control. Where Riley had an "empty" page, Reba had a "wicked or ignorant" human page...but what I have found with rescue dogs, it is progress not perfection that is the goal. All of us who love dogs know they are the most forgiving and accepting creatures. Jeff made his FAMOUS lasagna--offered with or without jalapenos! As a fundraiser for Belgian Tervuren Rescue, Inc., every brag on a Terv is $5. Every brag on a person or dog-not-a-terv is $10. Every bitch is $10 and isn't published! THERESA brags on a special herding moment--"chip" had failed the day before at the pen. The next day he passed with an awesome job. It was their last leg for their Started title, and they beat the Border Collie and got a 1st Place! TAMMY brags on Sarah for dedicating her time and knowledge of tracking to "Riley!" Tracking is a great sport for a dog that needs some confidence-building! SARAH brags on Tammy for taking instruction well! DAVID brags on Joella's report that an ugly round Pug took Best Puppy 6-9 month and Best Puppy Toy in San Marcos at his first show! He's learning to pick up all his toys and put them in a box at a Shaping Roundtable class. SUSAN brags on "Jordan" for being a continuing delight in the Shaping class! DENNIS brags on "Cody" for kicking a** at the Grand Canyon, in the snow! SUSAN brags on Dennis for another fine year as President of LSBTC! DENNIS brags on Pat for doing the web page for the club! DEB brags on Susan for doing the newsletter! PAT brags on "Marquis" for 14 and going strong! She notes that when she visits, "Marquis'" interest in their cat has never faltered! She's still living large! SHAWN brags on "Dreamer's" Herding Instinct Test at Nolan River. She'd never seen sheep, and the evaluator said she was keen and a handful! SUSAN announced a bitch! (Don't you wish you were there?) DEB remembered to brag on "Cody's" Herding Instinct title! SHAWN brags on all the breeders that do the hard work so that we can have Tervs! SUSAN brags on Cynthia and Jeff for jumping into breeding with "Clipper." PAT-- uh oh--announced another bitch! JEFF brags on "Clipper" for handling 20 hours of driving each way to meet "Clu" in West Virginia. JEFF commemorates their dear departed "Cole," "one of the sweetest Tervs we've been blessed to know."
