1 Town of Springdale News From the Mayor s Desk Phase one of the SR-9 renewal project is almost done. It is scheduled to be complete by the end of March. Phase two through Springdale is in the final stages of planning and will be sent out to bid in a couple of months. The start date for this phase has a soft date of October A project that was supposed to be relatively simple has turned out to be far more complicated. We are trying to think through and include as much as possible so everything is done at one time. When the project is finished next year it should be a beautiful compliment to our town. We are currently coordinating with UDOT, Rocky Mountain Power, and Washington County to put power underground. This is quite an expensive undertaking but working with UDOT has made it more feasible. There are a number of challenges putting power underground including procuring right-of-way's and different types of equipment. Additionally part of Springdale s power is older and does not match up with current technology without adapters. Rocky Mountain Power is looking at how to make this work. Everywhere we can put power lines underground we will. In those locations where it is not possible right now, we plan to install electrical conduit. With conduit in place it will be much easier to put power underground in the future. Rocky Mountain Power is also looking at installing a redundant system. This system would provide more consistent power and allow them to work on specific sections in town without completely shutting off power to everyone. This is the goal we are trying to achieve. March 2017 The Watchman Zion National Park News Good News - Zion National Park seasonal employees have been cleared to be hired, and so we are working hard to that end in order to be prepared for the start of our busy season. Bad News - permanent and term employees are still part of the new administration's hiring freeze. More to follow.. After a snowy couple of months, Park law enforcement asks to remind everyone of warm weather snow melt and pooling of water in canyons and higher, faster flows of the rivers. Please be safe and check conditions before hikes. As always please be reminded that parking in nondesignated road sides in the Park puts visitors in harms way. Encourage shuttle use which begins full time in town and through the Park on March 11th. A pilot program to sell 7 day park passes through certain Springdale businesses is underway. Our hope is that more visitors will buy their passes and utilize parking space and shuttle service to the park from in town. Look for window signs "Zion National Park 7 Day Pass Sold Here." I have added an SR-9 Update Report to Town Council meeting agendas and will continue to provide information to the community from now until the project is complete. ~Mayor Stan Smith 118 Lion Boulevard PO Box 187 Springdale, UT Fax
2 Preserving Springdale s Night Sky When we think of our town s appearance, our thoughts may jump to blue skies and red rocks, or the familiar, smiling faces and the charming shops along Zion Park Boulevard. Let s also remember all the wonder Springdale holds after the last rays of sun fall on the Watchman and the first twinkling stars begin to appear. It s been reported that four out of five Americans live in places where they can no longer see the Milky Way! We can count our lucky stars to be among those who live in a place where not only can you look up on a clear night and see the Milky Way, but, there s even that special time during the year when you might notice it line up directly with the space between the canyon walls. Expounding upon this nighttime view for future generations of both residents and visitors is a priority to Springdale. We have ordinances that regulate outdoor lighting and a Night Sky Program that educates the public of both the wonders of the dark sky and ways to enhance the view. Also, Chapter 7.5 of Springdale s General Plan - the document that guides decision making on the municipal level - explains several specific objectives and strategies concerning outdoor lighting and the night sky. All of these resources help to preserve our unique spot as one of the best places to view the cosmos. With the renewal of SR-9, the replacement of our current lights with dark sky friendly street lighting, and a new season of Night Sky Programming, Springdale continues to enrich the Town s appearance both day and night. Stay tuned for the Night Sky Program Calendar. Please direct questions or comments about this article to Toni Benevento or planner@springdaltown.com. Police Corner The Springdale Police Department is gearing up for the busy months ahead. With that, we have added a new face to the force. Matthew Hansen has come to our department with over 6 years of experience. Matt started his law enforcement career working as a Corrections Officer for the Washington County Sheriff s Office. He later was selected and moved to a Patrol Deputy position with the Sheriff s Office. There he quickly became a field training officer, a computer TAC and was advancing to become a firearms instructor. Matt holds several certifications for his current position and is currently attending Dixie State University studying general education. Join me in welcoming Matt. He will be a huge asset to the police department and the citizens of the Town. As always, thank you for the support that you continue to give to our great police department and go follow or Like us on Facebook for our updates at: ~Chief Brecke BluCan Schedule Want to confirm your BluCan pickup schedule?
