The Westville Veterinary Hospital has always been proud of the fact that it has been in the forefront of providing new facilities and innovations for the benefit of their patients. In the same way as we have had for some time visiting Veterinary Ophthalmologists from Johannesburg on a regular basis, we now have an arrangement for the regular visits of a Veterinary Specialist Physician. Dr Richard Burchell, who will be available for the referral, not only of patients from our own hospital but from other veterinarians in the area. We are pleased too to advise of the opening of our Rehabilitation and Wellness Centre. This is run by Sr Kathryn Powell and is on our premises. This will be primarily aimed at post surgical patients who need assistance in becoming mobile again, but also for patients having general mobility problems. We are quite sure that our patients and their owners will benefit from these new areas of focus at our hospital. Westville Veterinary Hospital is pleased to welcome Dr Richard Burchell BSc (Hons) BVSc MMedet (Med) Current senior lecturer in Small Animal Medicine at Onderstepoort, Dr Richard Burchell, will be conducting a Specialist Medicine Referral Clinic at the Westville Veterinary Hospital. Dates are as follows: Saturday 07/06/2014 Monday 23/06/2014 Saturday 12/07/2014 Tuesday 29/07/2014 Monday 04/08/2014 Monday 11/08/2014 Monday 08/09/2014 Monday 22/09/2014 For appointments please contact the Westville Veterinary Hospital on [031]

Winter Months The winter months tend to be quiet months in the veterinary world. This is due in the main part to the fact that external parasites tend to be less active during these months. This results in there being a dramatic reduction in flea related skin conditions and also in tick borne disease such as Biliary fever. Because animals with fewer fleas scratch themselves much less, owners are less likely to notice that there are still a few fleas present on their animals. These fleas are still producing eggs that will ultimately develop into adult fleas when the hot humid months return. It is imperative that one should continue with flea control right throughout the year. We are always stressing this fact as we see the result of distressed owners and their pets in the summer who decided to reduce their flea control during the previous winter. During the cooler days dogs tend to keep themselves warm and are less likely to be out on the roads and so are less vulnerable to fights and road accidents and similarly at night cats prefer to be in a warm corner inside than out prowling the streets at night. When doing neighbourhood patrols at night in an effort to reduce crime it is amazing to see how cats are out and about in large numbers in the summer, but yet in the winter this is not the case.many cats have their favourite evening sentry posts in the summer, but yet in the winter are nowhere to be seen!

Post Operative Care Hours spent on sometimes intricate surgery may on occasions be wasted if an animal is not properly cared for during it s convalescent period at home. It is very important, therefore, that instructions given after surgery should be strictly adhered to. Once the healing process is over the animal may need further rehabilitation to get, particularly limbs, back to their full mobility. This can be done at our new rehabilitation centre under the care of Sr Kathryn Powell. Kathryn has various treatments available to assist her to get patients back to full movement. See below for further details Westville Veterinary Rehabilitation & Wellness Centre Rehabilitation Veterinary Hospital Wellness Centre The Westville Veterinary Rehabilitation and Wellness Centre officially opened its doors on Thursday 15th May Sr Kathryn Powell saw a need for this and the idea of a rehabilitation centre became a reality. The centre is run separately from the hospital. It has a well equipped treatment room as well as a pool for hydrotherapy. Up to 20 patients can be treated each day. We are very proud that the dream of opening a facility such as this has been achieved and feel sure that many patients will benefit greatly from the care and treatment they will receive when making use of this wonderful facility. Dogs often need rehabilitation after orthopaedic and neurological surgery in order for them to regain full limb function and learn how to walk again. In addition to post surgery therapy Kathryn is also able to treat muscular injuries, joint problems and offer assistance with wound healing and pet weight loss.

The benefits of rehabilitation for the pet include: Increased speed of recovery after injury or surgery Improved function and quality of movement Reduction of pain, swelling and complications Increased strength, range of motion and endurance Non-invasive healing Weight loss and cardiovascular fitness Prevention of further injury through owner education Improved and prolonged quality of life Available treatments include: Cold and heat therapy Electric stimulation Therapeutic exercises and massage Passive range of motion and stretching Rhythmic stabilisation and joint compression Photizo light therapy Hydrotherapy Our Boardroom Remember that we do rent out our boardroom, complete with kitchen facilities including crockery glassware and cutlery. In the past it has been used for small conferences and family celebrations such as birthday parties, christenings, and anniversary and engagement parties.we have hosted small wedding receptions too! For further information contact our practice manager Bev Chislett.

Puppy Socialisation We are able to identify puppies that have attended socialisation classes as they walk into our waiting room. They are confident, friendly and quite at home in the presence of other dogs and humans. They give the impression of being quite at peace with their world and this attitude will stay with them throughout the rest of their lives. It is particularly important in the case of large breed dogs, as a nervous unpredictable dog is not one that is easily manageable. Puppy socialisation classes are run on a weekly basis for puppies between the ages of 6 and 14 weeks. This has been found to be the optimum time during a puppy s life for it s social development. After this age this opportunity is lost as the foundation of the puppy s socialisation has then been laid. It is important that one should not miss the boat for this crucial period. During these classes discussions on general care are given as well as basic training. We encourage children to come with their pets as other puppies will become used to having young children around. The rapid sudden movements of children sometimes take older dogs by surprise if they have not been exposed to children in their early years. If you have recently acquired a new puppy spend some time with it attending socialisation classes. Not only will your puppy benefit but you will too, as you are likely to develop a closer bond with your pet. Ask at reception for details of when you can book for these classes.

Exportation of dogs to the United Kingdom Please be advised that the exportation of dogs to the United Kingdom does not now include the six months quarantine period which had been in place for many years. Instead of this blood tests are taken from animals moving to the UK to check on their immunity to rabies. These blood tests are done at set times after vaccinations are done and the animals are Microchipped. These are done over a period of time and planning for this must be done well in advance of departure from this country. Animals going to other parts of the world may also be blood tested, but the country into which the animals are moving lay down the regulations of what they require to have done before such a move can take place.
