4 Wolfking Adult Dog (bison) by Solid Gold - Score 97 A AKC INTRODUCES CONDITIONAL REGISTRATION New York, NY - The American Kennel (r) Conditional Registration program is now available for any AKC(r)-registered dog whose parent, through DNA testing, is found to be unidentifiable. Rather than canceling the registrations of the individual dog, all of its littermates and all of their offspring, AKC will change affected dogs' registration to the conditional status. The conditional status will be clearly noted on the registration or pedigree of the unknown dog, as well as all progeny for three generations, with the letter Q starting the AKC registration number. Conditional status will only be granted in cases where the dog is believed to be purebred, but a registered parent is found to be incorrect. "The Conditional Registration program will foster better relationships with dog owners who discover that there is an unidentified ancestor in their purebred dog's pedigree," said Thomas Sharp, Assistant Vice President of Compliance. "Now these owners will not be penalized with a revoked AKC registration and the loss of a majority of its benefits. For example, a dog with Conditional registration may still participate in any event in which ILP dogs may participate, including Obedience, Agility, and Rally." Conditional registration also offers informed breeders the ability to keep these dogs and their offspring in a breed's gene pool. To register a litter out of a sire and dame with conditional registration, both parents must be DNAprofiled. After three generations of DNA-profiled parents, the registrations will revert to regular for the litter in the fourth generation. This protocol is in line with the acceptance of imported dogs with three generation pedigrees from the country of origin. Carl C. Ashby Delegate United States Kerry Blue Terrier AKC TAKES INITIAL STEP TOWARD FORMATION OF POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE New York, NY -On Friday, August 10, 2007 a request was filed with the General Counsel of the Federal Election Commission (FEC) seeking an opinion on whether the American Kennel (r) and its member and affiliate dog clubs are "membership organizations" as defined under relevant FEC regulations, and whether the AKC(r) and its member and affiliated clubs are "affiliated" within the meaning of applicable FEC regulations. The request was filed by attorney Timothy W. Jenkins of O'Connor & Hannan LLP of Washington, DC on behalf of the AKC. "Last week's filing with the FEC is the first and arguably most significant step toward giving the AKC and the dog fancy a crucial tool for positively affecting dog legislation at the federal and state level," said Ron Menaker, AKC's Chairman of the Board. Menaker informed the fancy of the AKC's intentions to form a PAC during the June 2007 Delegate meeting. The FEC opinion will determine the scope of the universe of individuals that the AKC can legally solicit for contributions to its PAC. In emphasizing the importance of careful and deliberate steps toward formation of a PAC representing purebred dog fanciers, Menaker noted that the AKC has carefully considered this action for nearly a year, stating "many people think that all an organization has to do to form a PAC is to start soliciting money. In fact, the process can be very complicated, particularly given the unusual membership structure of the AKC and its member and affiliated clubs. It is essential that we proceed in a deliberate and legal manner." AKC President Dennis B. Sprung called the filing of the FEC request a "watershed event in the history of the AKC. We have been very aggressive in advocating for the rights and interests of purebred dog owners and breeders through our Canine Legislation Department, our federal legislative consultant, our state federations of dog clubs, and our individual member and licensed clubs, but without a PAC, the dog fancy has been fighting with one hand tied behind their backs. A PAC will enable us to be infinitely more effective in representing our interests." forthcoming from the FEC, and that an AKC PAC could be formally launched before the end of the year. Carl C. Ashby Delegate United States Kerry Blue Terrier AKC-Parent Conference Tom Rogers and I attended the AKC Parent Conference in Atlanta this past weekend, I know Tom will update you on his thoguhts but there are two things I believe deserve special note: 1) Over the next couple of years there will be an effort to study "how" groups wil be configured how many there will be, how they will be populated, how the judging transition would be handled, what the impact would be on shows, the accomodation of new breeds entering the registry, etc. This will be a lengthy proces one that requires careful thought and deliberate action. While Kerry Blues will most likely not be impacted as much as some other breeds we need to stay close to this work. As of now this is just a "glean" in AKC's eyes. No formal group is in place. The proponderance of those in attendance overwhelmingly endorsed a group study. 2) AKC Companion Animal Recovery is back with their exclusive arrangement with Trovan. Those of you who microchip as those who belong to All Breed s are urged to support AKC Companion Animal Recovery. Its success benefits all dogs. AKC CAR is the only not for profit recovery service and surplus money is returned to support purebred dogs through grants, etc. Work with your Vets to make sure they are signed up with AKC CAR and offer their chips. Carl Carl C. Ashby Delegate United States Kerry Blue Terrier Sprung added that he was optimistic that a prompt and favorable response would be 4
5 There's Hope for Thunder-Phobic Dogs Pet Column for the week of March 27, 2006 Office of Public Engagement 2001 S. Lincoln Ave. Urbana, Illinois Phone: 217/ Kim Marie Labak Information Specialist University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine Zeus Barger and Belle Carpenter were two dogs who shared a common problem. Like many dogs, they were deathly afraid of thunderstorms. Fortunately, Zeus, Belle, and their owners have found ways to manage their thunder phobia. Dogs can sense subtle changes in barometric pressure, so they may sense a thunderstorm an hour or more before it hits. Dogs who suffer thunder anxiety may pant, pace, salivate, and paw at doors excessively before a storm, and when thunder sounds, they may shiver, whimper, or even become destructive, scratching at doors and floors, possibly to the point that they hurt themselves. This was the case with Zeus. Zeus was a golden retriever who found a simple way to deal with his fear of thunder. He belonged to Dr. Anne Barger, a veterinary pathologist and assistant professor at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana. "Zeus was a sensitive soul," explains Barger, who would put Zeus in a kennel while she was away at work. One day when it started to storm, she worried about Zeus and went home to check on him. "By the time I got there, he had gotten out of kennel. He was so afraid, he was able to bend the metal bars and squeeze out." Not only did Zeus destroy his kennel, but he also hurt himself getting out--his face was swollen and cut from the ordeal. During another incident, Zeus was outside during a storm and trying to get inside, he scratched at the door so violently he demolished the door and wore his toenails down until his paws were bleeding. The solution to Zeus' problem was surprisingly simple. Dr. Barger explains, "Zeus and I came to an understanding: I told him I wouldn't put him in the cage anymore if he found a place in the house he could go to feel safe during thunderstorms." Eventually Zeus found that the lying in the upstairs bathtub made him feel more secure during thunderstorms. "I knew an hour ahead of time that a storm was coming, because Zeus would head upstairs and look at me as if to say 'I'll be in the tub if you need me.' In the tub, Zeus calmed down, his breathing and heart rates became normal, and he wasn't hurting himself." When asked to theorize why Zeus chose the bathtub, Barger says, "The bathtub is such as strong, solid appliance that when the thunder shakes the house a little, the tub may muffle the vibrations." Barger also notes that the bathtub is a cool, quiet place, and that her bathroom doesn't have any windows, keeping Zeus from seeing the lighting, which also triggers anxiety in some dogs. Dr. Rachael Carpenter, a veterinary anesthesiologist at the teaching hospital, also has a thunderstorm phobic dog named Belle. For years, veterinarians have prescribed sedatives to calm dogs during storms, but Carpenter explains that these medications may sedate a dog, but the dog may still feel anxious even though it doesn't show signs of agitation. "Of course, you can't ask the dog if it still feels anxious, but now there are drugs on the market that are specifically made to treat anxiety, not hyperactivity." Aside from medical treatment, behaviorists recommend counter-conditioning and desensitization. "To counter-condition your dog, teach her to settle and relax on command. Train her to go to her bed and lay down on command when it's not thundering, so when the thunder comes, she already understands that command." Carpenter explains that often pet owners do the opposite; by offering a pet treats, praise, and consolation petting when the animal is panting, pacing, and whimpering, they are essentially rewarding the pet for acting anxious. Carpenter also recommends playing CDs or audio tapes of thunderstorms to desensitize a pet to the noise. "Start it out quietly, and then play it a little louder. At the same time, tell the dog to go to its bed and relax, and reward them for lying down and relaxing." A novel solution that Carpenter has tried with Belle is a Dog Appeasing Pheromone (DAP) diffuser, an overthe counter product available at most pet stores. "It looks just like a Glade Plug-In ᆴ," she says. The diffuser releases a pheromone that is similar to the one that mother dogs release when their puppies are nursing. "It's supposed to be very calming, and you simply plug it into the wall and keep one around during storm season." Carpenter recommends combining a DAP diffuser with behavioral training and drug therapy. Pet owners can learn from Zeus and Belle that there are several options for dealing with a thunder-phobic pet, from medications and pheromones to training, or simply letting the pet seek out its own hide-out. As Dr. Barger notes, "Often dogs will let us know what they need if we just give them the opportunity." For more information on thunder phobia, behavior, anti-anxiety medications, or DAP diffusers and your pet, consult your veterinarian. 5
