2 President's Notes I hope this summers finds everyone well and enjoying what is hopefully amicable weather! We have recently had our Canadian National here on the west coast, with a nice entry of quality dogs. It was good to see most of the breeders from BC out supporting the event, as well as entries from Alberta and south of the border. Thank you to Sandi Malcom for taking the reins on the National. I would like to take a moment to send out congratulations to Kate, Vickie and Raylan for their amazing achievements this year down south! It is no small feat to be both number one All Breed and Breed in the USA, when you are from Canada! Keep up the good work to this beautiful team!. I do not have much to report at the moment as there has not been much club activity this summer. However to those who have stepped up and taken on boosters and supported entry jobs I thank you. A club is only as good as its membership. I look forward to talking to everyone at our next meeting. All required documents are done, Show Secretary is right on top of it and has been a big help to me as I have never done this before and it is an eye opener. Received the trophies and ribbons that we had. New order for ribbons has gone to show secretary as Kate will be away so I will do them locally. They have the MSCC logo. Entries are trickling in, last time I asked there were 6 mini's entered, I have not done mine yet. MSCC is offering a BBQ to competitors on the Saturday night no numbers as yet. I have booked a 10 x 15 grooming spot for any schnauzers that want to join me, plus we will use if for hospitality. We have requested a 11 am time with second class after lunch enabling us to groom fully with just a touch up for the second showing. Larissa Hotchin will judge the sweeps. I am picking up prizes at the end of the month at the Victoria show, driving down to get them to ensure they get here in time. Have a verbal commitment from the show secretary to be fully on board the day of our specialty to ensure it all runs smoothly. The overall show is going to be great all indoors so no wet mini's. 11 Health & Genetics The following was written for medical professionals, but the laws of inheritance apply equally to dogs thus, the characteristics discussed may be helpful in unravelling how a disease condition or genetic disorder may have been inherited. Pedigree Clues Autosomal Dominant Characteristics of autosomal dominant inheritance (exceptions to these rules may occur due to de novo mutations, variable expressivity, reduced penetrance or sexlimited expression): Males can transmit the condition to males (father to son). Males and females are equally likely to transmit the condition (to children of either gender). Males and females are both affected, usually in equal proportions (if there are enough people in the pedigree). The condition appears in multiple successive generations (vertical inheritance pattern). Each child of an affected parent has a 50% chance of being affected, provided the other parent is unaffected. Thus, half of the children of an affected individual are affected on average (may vary considerably due to statistical chance). Unaffected individuals do not have affected children. Some characteristics of autosomal dominant disorders include: The condition may have a late age of onset. Conditions often exhibit variable expressivity and/or reduced penetrance. Therefore, they may appear to skip generations or severely affected children can be born to a parent so mildly affected that the affected parent was previously unrecognized. The condition may result from a new mutation. Thus, a single affected individual in the pedigree does not rule out autosomal dominant inheritance (the first affected individual's children would still have 50% risk for being affected). A homozygous state for the condition may result in being more severely affected, or it may be lethal. Ethnicity and consanguinity are not important factors in disorder frequency as they are in autosomal recessive inheritance. Autosomal Recessive Characteristics of autosomal recessive inheritance: Typically, unaffected parents have affected children. Males and females are both affected, usually in equal proportions (if there are enough people in the pedigree). The condition usually appears in a single sibship, unless carrier frequencies are high (horizontal inheritance pattern). Each full sibling of an affected individual has a 25% chance of being affected. Thus, one quarter of the children in a sibship are affected on average (may vary considerably due to statistical chance). Conditions are more common among parents who are closely related (consanguineous), especially for rare conditions.
12 Some characteristics of autosomal recessive disorders include: Conditions often have an early age of onset (infancy to childhood). Conditions may be more common in certain ethnic groups. Disorders may be inborn errors of metabolism. The first case may not be recognized as genetic. Conditions are less likely to exhibit variable expressivity and/or reduced penetrance than autosomal dominant ones. XLinked Recessive Characteristics of Xlinked recessive inheritance: Males are exclusively or much more commonly affected than females. Females are typically unaffected carriers. However, if females do exhibit clinical symptoms, findings are often more mild than for males. Affected males have unaffected children (provided the mother is not a carrier). No sons inherit the condition (they inherit the Y chromosome), and all daughters are carriers (they inherit the affected X chromosome). Unaffected males do not transmit the condition to their children. Carrier females do not have affected daughters (provided the father is unaffected). Affected males are related to each other through unaffected carrier females. The sons of carrier females have a 50% chance of being affected, and daughters have a 50% chance of also being carrier females. Thus, half the sons in an affected sibship are affected on average (although there may be significant variation due to statistical chance). Some characteristics of Xlinked recessive disorders include: Females who exhibit symptoms often have skewed X inactivation. Sex chromosome abnormalities (45,X 47,XXY) can alter expected inheritance patterns based on gender. New mutations are relatively common. Therefore, females are only considered obligate carriers if they have 2 affected sons and/or an affected son and another affected male relative. For common Xlinked recessive disorders (such as color blindness) or rarely with consanguinity, inheritance may not follow typical patterns because both mother and father may have a gene mutation. Ethnicity and consanguinity are typically less important factors in disorder frequency than they are in autosomal recessive inheritance. XLinked Dominant Characteristics of Xlinked dominant inheritance (assumes only one parent has a gene mutation): Males and females may be affected. Affected males are typically more severely affected than affected females. Affected males transmit the condition to none of their sons and all of their daughters. Affected females can have affected daughters or sons. Each child of an affected female has a 50% chance of being affected (son or daughter), provided the other parent is unaffected. Some characteristics of Xlinked dominant disorders include: Condition may be lethal in males, leading to fewer than expected males in the pedigree or a history of multiple pregnancy losses. Disorders with this inheritance type are rare.
13 Mitochondrial Characteristics of mitochondrial inheritance: Males and females are both affected, usually in equal proportions (if there are enough people in the pedigree). Only females transmit the condition to their children (no fatherchild transmission). All affected individuals are related to each other through females (may be affected or unaffected). The condition appears in multiple generations. Some characteristics of mitochondrial disorders include: Conditions may exhibit extreme variable expressivity. Affected individuals may not exhibit symptoms (reduced penetrance). Disorders may be degenerative and involve central nervous system symptoms. Chromosomal Characteristics of chromosomal inheritance: Can mimic virtually any inheritance pattern due to the many different origins and types of chromosome abnormalities. Some characteristics of chromosomal disorders include: Best identified by cytogenetic testing based on clinical findings such as the following: Combinations of major and/or minor congenital anomalies Mental retardation with or without major/minor anomalies Recurrent pregnancy loss Sexual development disorders (e.g., ambiguous genitalia, primary amenorrhea, delayed puberty) Infertility Stillbirth or infant death Source: Glomerular Lesions in Proteinuric Miniature Schnauzer Dogs E. Furrow, G. E. Lees, C. A. Brown, R. E. Cianciolo First Published December 22, 2016 Journal of Veterinary Pathology Abstract Miniature Schnauzer dogs are predisposed to idiopathic hypertriglyerceridemia, which increases risk for diseases such as pancreatitis and gallbladder mucocele. Recently, elevated triglyceride concentrations have been associated with proteinuria in this breed, although it is difficult to determine which abnormality is primary. Retrospective review of renal tissue from 27 proteinuric Miniature Schnauzers revealed that 20 dogs had ultrastructural evidence of osmophilic globules consistent with lipid in glomerular tufts. Seven of these dogs had lipid thromboemboli in glomerular capillary loops that distorted their shape and compressed circulating erythrocytes. Triglyceride concentrations were reported in 6 of these 7 dogs, and all were hypertriglyceridemic. In addition, glomerular lipidosis (defined as accumulation of foam cells within peripheral capillary loops) was identified in a single dog. The remaining 12 dogs had smaller amounts of lipid that could only be identified ultrastructurally. Neither signalment data nor clinicopathologic parameters (serum albumin, serum creatinine, urine proteintocreatinine ratio, and blood pressure) differed among the various types of lipid lesions. During the time course of this study, all dogs diagnosed with glomerular lipid thromboemboli were Miniature Schnauzers, underscoring the importance of recognizing these clear spaces within capillary loops as lipid.
14 Carmelo the schnauzer is a Bolivian monastery s newest monk While he was once just a strap pup, he s now found a life as a monk at a St Francis Monastery in Cochabamba, Bolivia. And that s something to be applauded. Carmelo s journey to the monastery began on the streets, where he was rescued by local monks. Their monastery is named after St Francis, the patron of animals, so of course they had to help out a pup in need. Once he was rescued from a rough life on his own, Carmelo was brought into the monastery and welcomed into the fold. The monks named him Friar Bigotón (meaning Friar Moustache) and gave him his very own habit. Now, Friar Bigotón spends his days preaching to fish in the monastery s pond and playing with the monks. His life is all about playing and running, friar Jorge Fernandez told The Dodo. Here, all of the brothers love him very much. He is a creature of God. The monks hope that Carmelo s story will inspire other monasteries to open their doors to pets in need of homes, and they re working with local animal rescue group Proyecto Narices Frías to spread the message. Let us introduce Friar Bigotón, who s part of the monastery in San Francisco Cochabamba Bolivia, wrote the rescue group on Facebook. If all the churches of our country adopted just one dog and cared for it like Friar Bigotón, we are sure that the parishioners would follow his excellent example. Source:
