2 President's Message Hello to our membership! imesi hope all of the members of the MSCC are doing well and having a healthy and happy 2017 so far. Our 2017 National Specialty is well underway and will be held in Nanaimo BC on Saturday June 17. Our national judge is John Rowton of Oregon and sweepstakes just is soon to be confirmed. You will be able to find all the information and the premium list here I recently received an from a BC Club asking for the MSCC to sponsor a booster this fall in the Okanogan and this made me think that it would be wonderful to see the club sponsor boosters across the country. So at this time I am asking the members to look into clubs in their province that would like a sponsored booster at their event. This undertaking would be a small time commitment, and if as a club we work on this quickly we would be able to purchase prizes perhaps in bulk and at a discount. So if we could have members bring forward their ideas ASAP that would be wonderful. Please watch for out next online meeting scheduled for Wednesday April 26th. Correspondence Letter from CKC approving our National Specialty for June 17th in Nanaimo, BC. Invoice from Mardon Insurance Invoice from CKC for club renewal 4. Financial Report Marija Kuncic: As I do not yet have access to the bank statement I cannot provide a Financial update. Motion # Kate McMillan moved that as our Treasurer hasn't been forwarded the books, and we're still in the midst of receiving membership renewals, I move we WAIVE the financial report for this meeting. Reports of Directors and Committees Show Commitee 2017 National Report Brian Kruse & Sandi Malcolm The MSCC National will be at Arbutus Meadows Equiestrian Park, Parksville, BC. (20 minutes north of Nanaimo) Requesting a monetary budget of $1,000 for the specialty. All bills and receipts will of course be turned in as well as any unused money. All efforts to secure products and/or services for free will be examined. Huge facility on acres and acres of land. Lots of parking, close to the building Lots of RV space There will be terrier races, and earth dog at the show, working on having barn hunt but no confirmation yet. Lure coursing and carting was offered last year and will be again this year. Schnauzers do amazingly well at lure coursing. Hotels are in the works, will book 6 rooms for us, just checking out prices right now. Show is all inside, we have room for at least 12 rings. if you look on the website, you will see a big green section of the building, this is only half of it. They use it all winter for soccer and then take out the fake grass and dirt. We are then down to cement floor but we have almost total coverage with mats.

4 Grooming is inside, set up and take down should be able to drive vehicles in, has to be confirmed closer to the show though. Ex pens will be allowed inside with proper under protection Lots of power available, lots of vendors Judge is confirmed John Rowton will be the judge for the specialty. Classic Show Services will be the show secretary Working on events BBQ for participants same day as the specialty. Prizes several possible providers have been contacted Does everyone want a grooming spot all together, I can do that and it can be either inside or out. If I know now, I can reserve the prime spots but don t tell anyone that. If we do a For the Love of Purebred Dog event will members participate in it? We advertise on the television and on the radio. Radio will be on site for a full day on Saturday so we have lots of public attend and everyone loves schnauzers. There is a 4 day show immediately prior at Black Creek June 10 to 13th.. This offers everyone 8 days of showing. Lots of opportunites for points. Here is the website Ribbons and Trophies Kate McMillan: I have the plaques for the trophies in for engraving of 2016 winners, with luck they'll be done in time for me to install before I leave for the Portland shows. We've arranged transport of the trophy box back to the Island, with some luck! There are a few ribbons left over from last year, and a few rosettes. There are also a number of flats for class placements, but they're kind of a grab bag of mismatches. Our ribbon provider (Centaur Awards) is good at sending ribbons out after the entry is finalized, but this means that whoever is ordering ribbons really needs to be on the ball, in contact with the show sec for final class entry numbers, etc. and gets them to Centaur right away. They also send them COD, so you'll have to pay for them out of pocket and be reimbursed. Motion # : Kate M. moved that a $1000 float be approved for the 2017 Specialty. Sandi Malcolm second. Carried. Motion # : Kate M. moved that a $10 rebate per entry be offered for MSCC memberowned dogs exhibited at the 2017 National. Dog must enter the ring to be eligible for the rebate and exhibitors must claim the rebate at the show. Sandi Malcolm second. Carried. 6. Old Business: There was no unfinished business 7. New Business: Breed Education Booklet Motion # : Kate McMillan moved that a committee be struck to update the breed booklet where necessary and reprint a new edition for sale. Elaine Allen seconded. After some discussion about reprinting the booklet vs making the information available on the Club website, the motion was carried. Andrea Walli, Tracy Hiuser and Caroline Lachance volunteered, and were appointed to the committee. 8. Date and place of next meeting: last week in April starting on Wednesday April 26th, on the Facebook Meetings page. 9. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned late evening on January 7th.

5 Board Notes The MSCC Board has approved a booster for the BC All Terrier Club Specialty, in conjunction with the Kamloops and District Kennel Club to help them celebrate their 50th Anniversary. on Labour Day weekend. Mr. James Reynolds is judging the event. The Board also approved a booster to be held with the Caledon Kennel Association shows on the November 2527th weekend, in Mississauga, Ontario. Thank you to Melody Fraser for volunteering to organize! Any donations or support area members can provide would be greatly appreciated. No judge has been assigned as yet. After a twoyear hiatus, the Miniature Schnauzer found its way back into the top ten in Labrador Retriever 2. German Shepherd Dog 3. Golden Retriever 4. Poodle 5. Havanese 6. Shetland Sheepdog 7. 6 Brags! AmGCh.CanGCh. Minuteman Justified started 2017 on the right paw by winning the Portland MSC Specialty and the AMSC "Top Twenty" in January. He followed with an AOM at Westminster, and Best in Specialty at the Cactus State MSC in early March. He's currently #1 Mini Schnauzer in the US in breed points. "Raylan" is coowned by Vickie Boechler and Kate McMillan Krown Where Fashion Sits was entered one day at the Victoria City Kennel Club where she won the breed from the classes over Specials and went on to a group 2nd/BPIG group in a lovely terrier lineup for her first 5 points. Not bad for her first day in the ring! We are looking forward to watching this little girl grow up.

8 Schnauzer Health and Genetics Sudden acquired retinal degeneration in dogs: breed distribution of 495 canines AR Heller, A Woerdt, JE Gaarder... First published: 3 March 2016 Journal of Veterinary Ophthalmology Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study was to describe breed, age, gender, and weight distribution of dogs affected with sudden acquired retinal degeneration (SARD) and to investigate whether SARD is more common in small breed dogs. Methods Medical records of dogs diagnosed with SARD confirmed by an electroretinogram were reviewed. Breed, age, gender, and weight were recorded when available. The same data were obtained for dogs with SARD described in the veterinary literature. Results Three hundred and two dogs were included from the ophthalmology practices and 193 dogs from the veterinary literature. Sixty breeds were present in the study. Mixedbreed dogs were the most common at 108 dogs (21.8%), followed by the Dachshund (68, 13.7%), Chinese Pug (44, 8.9%), Miniature Schnauzer (39, 7.9%), Maltese (23, 4.6%), Cocker Spaniel (22, 4.4%), Bichon Frise (18, 3.6%), Beagle (16, 3.2%), Brittany (15, 3.0%), and Pomeranian (10, 2.0%). Fifty other breeds were represented by 1 9 dogs each. The median age was 9 years (range = 10 months 16 years). The weight was known for 197 dogs. About 60.9% of dogs were less than 25 pounds, 31.5% were between 25 and 50 pounds, and 7.6% were greater than 50 pounds. Gender was recorded in 393 dogs: 217 female dogs and 176 male dogs. Conclusions As previously reported, SARD is most common in middleaged to older dogs. Smaller dogs of less than 25 pounds appear overrepresented, while large/giant breed dogs of greater than 50 pounds are infrequently diagnosed. In this study, there was no statistical significance between female and male dogs.

9 Q: Can two black Miniature Schnauzers produce an allcolour litter? A: Yes, they can if all the right genes are in place! This example is of a black dog bred to a black bitch, producing an all three colour litter. The big K represents the black gene, and little k is for "non black". The "A" locus is where the genes for salt/pepper (aw agouti wild) and black/silver (at agouti tanpoint) are located. As you can see, the general expectation would be 3/4 black puppies, with the remaining divided ithus: one homozygous salt/pepper (awaw), one black and silver (atat), and two s/p carriers of black and silver (awat). If you study it for a time, it will explain how it is possible for two black dogs to produce puppies of all three colours providing both parents are heterozygous black, and carry both the agouti alleles!
