1 THE BULLSCOOP THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF TAMPA BAY BULLDOG CLUB November 2017 Wow Your Family with These Fun Thanksgiving Facts 1. Busy day for plumbers The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest day for plumbers, according to Roto-Rooter. It experiences a 21 percent increase in calls over the four-day weekend than any other Thursday to Sunday period in the year. 2. The first Thanksgiving Day parade looked a little different Every year, millions watch the Macy s Thanksgiving Day Parade in person and on TV. Macy s began the parade, then known as the Macy s Christmas Parade, in 1924 to celebrate their expansion and new status as world s largest store. 3. This state is all about turkey Minnesota produces more turkeys than any other state in the U.S., raising close to 46 million in 2015, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. 4. Americans really, really like turkey The National Turkey Foundation (NTF) estimates that around 88 percent of Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving, and about 46 million turkeys were consumed on the holiday in Gobble, gobble Male turkeys, also called toms, are the only ones that can gobble. The females, or hens, make clucking or clicking sounds. 6. Unusual eats Americans prefer the white meat of the turkey, like the breast. Other countries prefer dark meat. Pacific Islanders, however, prefer a whole different part of the turkey: the tail. 7. The Presidential pardon The first official presidential pardon of a turkey occurred much more recently than most might think: President George H.W. Bush did it in 1989, and it s since become an annual tradition. 8. We don t know if turkey was served at the First Thanksgiving It s not exactly clear if turkey was served at the First Thanksgiving, though Colonists and Native Americans did eat wild turkey, according to the Plimoth Plantation, an experiential learning center in Plymouth, Massachusetts. An account of the First Thanksgiving from Edward Winslow mentions hunters who brought plenty of fowl, which probably included ducks, geese, swan, and perhaps turkeys, along with venison, lobster, mussels, and grapes. 9. Flying turkey? While domesticated turkeys cannot fly, wild turkeys can, for short distances, and at up to 55 miles per hour, according to the NTF! They can also run up to 20 miles per hour. 10. Canadians have Thanksgiving, too Americans aren t the only ones who celebrate Thanksgiving. The first official Thanksgiving in Canada was in 1879, though traditions of honoring the fall harvest predate both the official American and Canadian holidays. The date was moved around until 1957, when Thanksgiving was set as the second Monday of October.

2 CANDACE TRAFTON I remember the first time I attended a Tampa Bay Bulldog Club Specialty Show. It was in 2009 or 2010, and I came to FL on vacation to see my family. It happened to be the same weekend as the Strawbully Cluster and my sister, her family, and I decided to come to Orlando for a fun time. For me, that meant going to a bulldog show. I was rather impressed with how well it was organized, location was great and there were so many beautiful bulldogs from all over. As I wrote in the October Bullscoop Member Spotlight, my background in bulldogs was purely by accident. I never ever considered owning a bulldog, knew nothing about bulldogs, until one was given to me in Now I don t know what I would do without mine. In 2006, I found the Phoenix Bulldog Club by accident on a bulldog forum. Never really knew one existed and I decided to attend a meeting. Well, joining the club was the turning point of my life with bulldogs. During my membership with PBC, I held several offices, Board Member, Secretary, Vice President and President. I was also Show Chairman for the last 4 years before moving to FL. During that time I was fortunate to be mentored by some very knowledgeable, long-time bulldoggers who supported me as a club officer, show chairman and bulldog lover. I learned a great deal about the breed, about showing, and especially caring for these dogs. And that s what I strive to be for members of TBBC who are not sure how to begin to show their dogs, or care for them in the most appropriate and least costly manner. I want to give back to those who are willing to learn, because I never would have come as far as I have working with this breed, if not for all the advice and guidance I received from them. For 2018, I would like to see several changes and improvements for TBBC. First priority is raising club funds to a more comfortable level, by adding more fun events in the community and making sure they are made known to the public. In addition to that, I hope to improve TBBC s image with BCA, the local all-breed clubs and the public. Education of the public about the issues and concerns associated with rare color or color dogs, health testing, is not unique to bulldogs, but other purebred breeds as well. We must bring TBBC up to date with social media and technology. Because our specialty shows are the lifeblood of a breed club, I want to help make our shows as successful as possible by getting everyone involved, promoting trophy sales, and offering incentives to vendors with free advertising on our website in exchange for donations, etc. And make TBBC meetings more accessible for members through on-line meeting websites, etc. This club belongs to each member, and everyone s opinion should be respected. I strive to be open-minded on any and all suggestions, but cannot tolerate bullying and personal agendas. Caroline Wilson I have owned bulldogs for approximately 40 years and have been showing them since My greatest thrill in the show ring was Best in Show with Gino along with multiple Group placements. I was fortunate enough to buy Jaz from Ann and Stu Wagner and she was awarded a Group 1. I have been a member of TBBC since 1991 and have held every position on the board including President from Jan. 1, 2006 Dec 31, I have been a member of BCA for over 20 years and held the positions of President and Secretary. My goals for TBBC are: Meetings that are productive and uneventful. Education Increase funds in the bank account. I currently work for Dr. Koch and Dr. Abshier and our practice is known to be the Bulldog Clinic in Sarasota. I am blessed to be able to talk to new owners of bulldogs and provide them with information to help them with their bulldogs.

4 Twas the Nite of Thanksgiving But I just couldn't sleep I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep. The leftovers beckoned - The dark meat and white But I fought the temptation With all of my might Tossing and turning With anticipation The thought of a snack Became infatuation. So, I raced to the kitchen, Flung open the door And gazed at the fridge, Full of goodies galore. Gobbled up turkey And buttered potatoes, Pickles and carrots, Beans and tomatoes. I felt myself swelling So plump and so round, 'Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground. I crashed through the ceiling, Floating into the sky With a mouthful of pudding And a handful of pie. But, I managed to yell As i soared past the trees... Happy eating to all - Pass the cranberries, please. May your stuffing be tasty, May your turkey be plump. May your potatoes 'n gravy Have nary a lump, May your yams be delicious May your pies take the prize, May your thanksgiving dinner Stay off of your thighs. Happy Turkey Day Twas the Nite of Thanksgiving
