4 Field Trial Vs. Hunting Dogs By Charlie Rose Part 3 In order for dogs to be competitive at this level though is where you see a great separation from what typical hunters desires in dogs and the trialers demand. The trial dog must be faster, must have great presence and style on point, and must search, with snap, style, and grace on a flying run only the most likely objectives to hold birds as opposed to working a methodical pattern ahead of the walking hunter. These dogs MUST be completely steady to wing and shot. In the case of the GSP and other versatile breed trials such as Weimeraner and Vizsla Club trials these dogs are also required to stand completely steady all the way through the fall because if a dog places they will come back for a call back in which the dog must establish point, stand through the flush, shot, fall, and release only on command then make a quick, snappy retrieve to hand. A failed call back can and will result in the dog not being used in placements. Any trainer that has finished dogs to this level will tell you that often this is quite a difficult process and consequently the reason very few hunters ever require this level of training in their dogs, because it adds sometimes months to training time and often requires frequent touch up s in training. One fair criticism of trialing at this level is that for the most part they are about everything that happens right up to the point at which the gun goes off. Very few trial venues include retrieving in any meaningful way as a part of the evaluation process. The National Shoot To Retrieve Association (NSTRA) as well as some of the run and gun tournament type associations evaluate the total package of the hunter and dog, and scores are compiled based on the number of finds and birds retrieved to hand. These organizations are widely criticized by members of the horse back trial organizations as being less stringent in the discipline and manners required of the dogs however, but in many ways they are evaluations of things more reflective of foot hunting with your dog. The GSP and GWP and other versatile breed associations have also have water and retrieving (dry land) testing for their dogs, but they are separate from the field trial evaluations. To most foot hunters of course, what happens after the shot is at least as important as everything up to that point, because those pesky wild birds often are very uncooperative once they hit the ground and it takes a dog with a special gift and desire for tracking and retrieving to recover a good many of them. I attended six field trials this season. At them I rode in excess of 165 braces (braces are two dogs running head to head, stakes such as an amateur gun dog stake are comprised of the number of entries broken down into these two dog braces ). I also competed in these trials and managed a total of seven placements mostly in puppy and derby stakes, but even managed a third place with Bullett (my biggest project because of the number of birds killed over him before starting the breaking process at the age of 5!). At these trials what I routinely saw were dogs in much better physical condition than most of the hunting dogs I ve ever been around. Dogs that generally were extremely well mannered around other dogs and people. Owners and handlers so dedicated to these young prodigies you d think they were their children (I typically sleep with at least two adult GSP s so this is something I clearly understand) along with lots of families running around and having a good time. I saw a lot of dogs that struck me as man I d like to hunt behind that dog as well as some of the runaway field trial idiots. The funny thing is in comparison to what much of the online banter is, the runaway idiots never placed and the dogs I d like to hunt over did! I saw a LOT of heavy competition, a few grouches and someone occasionally complaining about this or that judging call. But for the most part I saw true sportsmanship, even trainers in heated competition helping each other out, and everyone working hard to make the trials a success. I m fortunate in having been known as a breeder of GSP s for a great many years at least by reputation so I found in most cases one handshake and an introduction I was quickly welcomed as one of the gang. Of course this frequently resulted in can you help us with (fill in the blank) we re long on needs and short on help! I also found across the board that if you are polite, don t bother the busiest trainers when they are busy, ask intelligent questions in a respectful manner people would bend over backwards to welcome you into the trial community. Again this is a stark contrast to what one would think about the difficulty of breaking into such a competitive world if one pays too much attention to online discussions of trialing where many make it sound extremely imposing and Continued next page

5 unwelcoming of new blood. Oddly enough, when my friends introduced me to their other friends as This is Charles Rose the Guide/Outfitter from Texas with the Dixieland s Rusty dogs who breeds hunting dogs at no point did anyone look down their nose at this lowly hunter. Conversely I had some of the best known people in the breed such as Mike and Linda Woody (owners and breeders of multiple nationally titled GSP s) tell me, Man it s great to have people like you get into the game, it s too easy for us to forget what keeps this breed great is how they make great hunting and family dogs. This is a wide contrast from much of the online discussions I ve seen, read, and participated in. About Midway through the second day I looked around at all the different rigs parked around the place, and thought about who they belonged to. I was awed by the fact that indeed probably ten of the last fifteen GSPCA and NGSP national champions were bred, owned, or handled by people in this very parking lot. My first braces as a rookie handler I found myself braced with the likes of Keith Gullege, Dennis Brath, Bryan Long and Phil Mathowitz. Folks for a Texas country boy like me, this was the equivalent of going from pee wee, to major league baseball in one short step! By my third trial however, I had made fast friends with most of these and many other of the top handlers and breeders and found myself being asked to help them out here and there and even ride scout on many occasions for both Dennis and Bryan. You can t be ANY more welcomed and accepted than that! What did this hunter come away with from his first season trialing? A new respect for the dedication and demands put upon the top trial trainers. Added respect for what it takes to earn enough placements to garner an FC or AFC (Field Champion or Amateur FC) title, and if anything more respect for the great trial dogs like FC Dixieland s Rusty HOF (hall of fame sire) who has been the very foundation upon which I have built a very successful kennel of family hunting (and now a few trialing) dogs. I have also learned a sincere appreciation for families like Bob Whele (Elhew Kennels) Ron and Nancy Herman (Rusty s breeders/owners), Bob Merkel (Wrenegade Kennels) the Woody s, George Byrd Evans, the Coffelt s and so many others who have dedicated so much time, effort, and resources to what they see as improving their breeds, along with a great many new friends, and a few nice ribbons to hang on the wall. Whether you trial, hunt or both, none of us are so very far apart. We want the best dogs possible to suit our purposes, and if you look at the very best hunting dogs in the country inevitably they go back to some of the top trial lines somewhere, and if you look at the pedigrees of the top performing trial dogs of today in many breeds you ll see quite often untitled dogs up there in places that were just a good hunting dog for whomever owned and appreciated them. Undeniably we all get hung up in our egos and on our own dogs. Inevitably we all like to think that what we do and where we hunt, or what ever types of hunt tests and trials we participate in are harder and tougher than what that other guy does; but whether I am walking in an Iowa Pheasant Patch with Larry Brown, or Scouting a brace with Lou, Bryan, or Dennis at a weekend trial or Championship, the truth is... We re NOT so far apart! CR

Rescue: Discussion was made about trying to get guidelines set up and a more standardized process for rescue. Jill would like to be able to do home visits when the dogs are placed too. Troy R. said he could help with this in Scott & Dakota Co. Pete said he could help in Washington Co. Jill will try to organize a meeting to work on these issues along with how others can best help her with rescue. -The rescue committee has discussed & decided to purchase a tape (about $49.95) to condition dogs for sound desensitizing to gunfire. Kathy Erickson has turned the newsletter editor position back to Chris. The club will purchase more Walkie Talkies with a 10+ mile radius with some of the funds that were approved for equipment. OLD BUSINESS Website: We are satisfied with how the website is now. It is more up to date. We will leave it with Net Kennel for now. Date & grounds are set. Non-Profit Status: - We have a federal EIN number. (Clark has this info now) Our official registered office of incorporation is now at Chris Benskin s house. All of our financial records have to be kept at this office. (This will need to change to always be where there treasurer lives.) Board ok d to purchase QuickBooks for non-profits. Articles of Incorporation Clark will need to get them f/secretary Janelle was unable to find them in the records handed to her she will contact Clark again to remind him to get these. NEW BUSINESS Jacob Bush issue: We will go by the book on the expulsion process. According to Article 6.2 in our by-laws the club will charge him with conduct detrimental to the best interest of the club and the AKC by committing a felony by carrying a weapon and putting the club in great liability. (Because he picked up a gun and gunned at our club events). He does have the option to resign from the club. He will get a gentle reminder of this fact from a club member who he has kept in contact with. Janelle will send him a registered letter with the charges, the date of the hearing, the fact that he can represent himself and bring witness in his defense. She will also notify all the board members of this board hearing. -A hearing date was set for Saturday June 9 th at 6:00pm at Sal s Angus Grill (after the hunt test). Fall Hunt Test: A recommendation was made to scrap this and run an extra spring test. Much discussion was made on this topic. There are many things to consider if we do this. It was decided to wait until after the Lake Superior test to decide as a club. This will carry to next mtg. New by-laws handbook there are some typos. We can Chris with this & he will fix. Handlers Clinics/Judges Clinics: There is a need/concern to have more consistent judging. Discussion was held on how we can help solve this problem. AKC is in the process of tightening up the standards. Perhaps we can ask good AKC judges to host a seminar and encourage apprentice judges AND handlers to attend Some of the biggest concerns are abused dogs and dogs that don t honor they shouldn t be passed. We should me more selective of the judges we use. Start early to try to get them. We may have to pay them better to get the good ones. Chad will put an outline together on what he is expecting to get out of a handler clinic, how he would put it on, and try to get help for a seminar. We should try to make this available to all the clubs. Chris will help Chad with an event like this. Meeting was adjourned at 10:05pm

9 What Makes A Good Scout? By John Lunseth Someone asked yesterday what a good scout can do, that will put a dog "over the top," make it the number one dog in the stake. We were focused on one particular guy, so kind of brushed off the question, and I wanted to come back and answer. In a good magic show, there are three people. There is a magician out front. It is his job to make the audience believe. And there is a subject. That is the lady getting herself sawed in half. Ouch! That hurts. And there is someone behind the scenes, a whole bunch of people actually, running around, making sure the trapdoor opens on time or getting it open if it got stuck, turning the spotlight on the right place so people are not watching the wrong place, sliding doors, moving things, pulling strings. Fall Chukar Challenge Saturday September 8, 2007 The club will be holding another Chukar Challenge this fall similar to the event held this last spring. The location will be at Willow Creek Kennels and Hunting in Little Falls, MN. There will be two classes, a broke dog class and a hunter class. Complete rules and regulations will appear in the September newsletter. Call Chad Hines if you have any questions. (320) We have three things in a field trial. We have the dog of course, he is a little more unpredictable than the magician's assistant. It is his job to get out there and do it. We have the handler, he is the magician, his job is to sit back and sell the performance to the audience, pretend he is levitating the pretty young lady when all he is doing is waving his hands in the air and jabbering. And we have the scout. While the handler is sitting back there pointing the dog out and selling it to the judges, he is the guy pulling on the wires so that pretty young lady actually appears to levitate. In trialing, the scout needs to be as much athlete as the dog. His horse needs to be fast and fearless. Where the handler and judges and gallery ride the established trail, he rides the edges, through the swamps and the sloughs. He needs the gallop to catch that dang dog. And he needs to be invisible. Silent. A ghost in the woods. Making it look to the judges as if the dog turns at the handler's whim, when really the sucker was headed for the back of the course at full speed, scout had to lather the horse just to catch him, and then scout had to show the dog to the front, just where the judges were looking for him to appear. Good scouts are also master tacticians. They know the particular dog. If it likes to take the bit in it mouth at 38 minutes, they know that, and they know which way the dog likes to go when it does it. They have seen him do it before. Handler only needs to know the horsepath, the general course. Scout needs to know every back road and trail through the woods. In the old days of trialing, every professional handler of note had a scout that worked for him full time, knew every dog and every course, had the fastest horse in the handler's pack, spent quite a bit of time in the emergency room. Now, very few can afford that luxury. Still, it is the skilled scout that can make or break the dog. The one that does all without being seen or heard until distant "Point" is called. Grilled Duck Recipe Ingredients 4 duck or two goose breast halves (goose breasts should be cut in half to form four pieces) 4 slices of bacon 2 beef bouillon cubes 1 cup water 1 tablespoon of grape jelly ½ teaspoon dry mustard 1 tablespoon brandy 1 tablespoon sherry 1/8 teaspoon oregano zest of one orange (the very outside layer of the orange) Wrap each breast with slice of bacon. Grill until medium rare. (About two minutes per side) High heat in the beginning will sear the outside of the bird and help keep in juices. In pan (smaller diameter pan with deep sides works best), dissolve water and bouillon, add grape jelly, mustard, sherry, brandy and oregano. Add grilled duck breasts and orange peel. Simmer on low to reduce sauce. Continually baste the breast as it reduces. Serve hot over rice.
