The Scarlet Letter The Golden Triangle Irish Setter Club, Inc JULY 2008 Happy July 4 th to everyone! The time that we spend with family and friends and dogs is precious and special. Relax and take the time to enjoy. It s hard to believe that half the year has gone by. While enjoying the summer, please remember, Fun, Sun and Safety for Your Dog. When including your dog in your summer water fun, please follow a few simple guidelines. If you take your dog on a boat, keep him under constant supervision and introduce him slowly to the movement of a boat. No matter what size your dog is, remember a floatation device. Take your dog along for the purchase. They need to be fitted properly. A dog s wet feet, on a fiberglass surface, is dangerous. Use additional matting on boats or decks to avoid accidents. Be sure that there is shade available, especially if you are planning a long day. All dogs should have a collar with ID tags and micro-chipping for back up, should you get separated from each other. Take along plenty of fresh water. Dogs get exhausted because they do not realize their physical limits. If fishing, watch those hooks. Always rinse your dog s coat when you return home. Have an enjoyable time! 4 Breeze s Column of the Month Happy Independence Day I guess the country that we live in won their independence a long time ago mine is still a work in progress. Mom is kinda clingy, wanting to keep an eye on me instead of letting me be responsible for myself. I m three years old now and very mature for my age. If I was not able to work independently, our yard would still be full of sticks that blow off the trees, my brothers would waste their days playing with toys (toy removal is my specialty), and the neighborhood would have neighbors roaming all over their yards without anyone being alerted to the danger of that! Inside home maintenance is another area where I d like to branch out. Food left laying around on the counters poses a health risk if left at room temperature for longer than 15 seconds, and I m always happy to remove it. Stopping me interferes with my independence, and I believe may be unconstitutional. A girl needs her space, and chasing the brothers off the bed or the couch is just me asserting myself, a good foundation for any democracy (i.e.: family). And democracy is something I ve done some research on. I have taken it upon myself to interpret the founding fathers rules, and this is how I see it. I have the right to remain silent (but that is not likely to happen) I have the right to bare arms which is fine; I was never into dressing up. I have the right to free press.and I ve shredded many a newspaper in my day, so I have enjoyed this one a lot! With this kind of protection, a girl can sure sleep at night. God Bless the USA..and Mom and Dad, and Chase and Gunner and my sisters and brothers and my friends and Goodnight all Breeze I leave you all with this quote.. Give me liberty. Or give me a good rawhide bone to chew on
Events & Activities Lottery Fund raiser all tickets, stubs and money should be into Lorrie at this time. Thank you, Lorrie, for chairing this. Thank you to those members who sold tickets. Good Luck to everyone who purchased tickets. RDO Saturday September 13 th, Pittsburgh Mills. Planning is under way. Dog Law is our theme this year. Verona police officer, Guy Truby, and his canine, Kato, will be present. Our community project for the year will be the purchase of a K9 Heat Alarm Pro, which is a monitoring system for the canine police vehicle. This protects the dog from overheating in the car in the case of the officer being called away for any length of time. This event fulfills AKC requirements to hold a dog show. We will also have Meet the Breed. Time will be 11:00-5:00 in the same location at the mall. Pirate s Base ball Game Lorrie Nogrady is planning our Dogs night out at the ball game. The date is the September 16, Pirates vs Dodgers game. Time is 7:05. The Pirates will have our name on the scoreboard regardless of how many of us decide to attend. They are holding 50 tickets for us right now, but the total is due to them by the end of July. The cost is $20 per person & dog, or the same cost without a dog. PLEASE send a check with the number of tickets ordered to Lorrie by July 31st. PLEASE MAKE CHECKS OUT TO PITTSBURGH PIRATES. Mail your checks to Lorrie at 111 McKelvey Ave., Pittsburgh PA There will be relief areas and water stations with attendants for the dogs. Owners will receive a hat and the dogs will receive treats and can have photos taken with the Parrot and Jolly Roger. As we get closer to game day, we may want to have dinner on the patio of Atria s before game time. While dogs are welcome on the patio, Lorrie would like to be sure that many dogs are welcome. She will check with Atria s, so if you think you may want to have dinner, let her know. She will need an approximate number of dogs before she contacts Atria s to see if this is permitted. What a wonderful evening she has planned! Thank you, Lorrie! Red Dog Olympics this is in the planning stages. Lisa and Joan have come up with a FUN day for our dogs. Tentatively scheduled for October, we will set the date and plans at our next meeting. Lisa and Joan have lined up a lot of great activities and this will include CGC testing by Lisa. This event will be open to anyone and their dog. This event will fulfill AKC requirement for holding a dog show. ISCA National 2009 progress continues with gathering items for the Rescue bags. Some toys have been ordered. Mary is getting together letters for donations from companies for the bags. She also has some great crafting ideas. Let the Crafting Parties begin! Rescue Mary had taken our club Rescue Book and scrapbooked it. It was on display at our Silent Auction for Rescue at the specialty. She has done a magnificent job with her creativity and if you did not get a chance to go through it, see what she done to each page, and read the stories, ask for it to be brought to a monthly meeting. I have to warn you, bring the Kleenex.
From the Rescue side. Hi Everyone, It's late June, and I started nudging Mom about it being time to do our column. She opened the Scarlett Letter and said "Bailey, don't you remember, we are off for the summer,,, just a little break." HELLO,,, I DIDN'T AGREE TO THAT. She might be taking a break, but I have things to share. I was never ACTUALLY told not to use the computer, and if I'm not actually given direction, I kind of travel to the beat of my own drum until she takes my sticks away. Where is that open button? Oh,,, Yeah,,, here it is. Thank God she has the group in the address book or I'd be really lost. Just between you and me I have to share some June news... It can never be too cool for me. I pant and pace constantly, even with the Air Conditioner on. Now mind you... it was 101 degrees in Baltimore this past week. And, I run the yard, at my will (Mom gives that permission every minute she is home, rewarding me for being such a great Kennel Boy.) I have great love for her for that. If she is home,,, I may run to my hearts content, ANY time I want. As long as I don't act crazy out back. It's a give and take thing. She only shuts the door if I'm too loud for neighbors. And I have to tell you, "I get it" If I'm not barking crazy, I get free reign. If that changes... the door gets shut. Mom cools the bedroom down before we go to bed and yet I still pant and pace. With her remote, Mom kicked the AC cooler down one degree at a time, not really paying attention to the number, just trying to get me comfortable. She would wake, hear me panting and point the remote to drop it a degree. She did this a couple of times until FINALLY I fell into a sweet, cool sleep. GUESS WHAT? Did you ever see that commercial for the sleep number beds? What is your perfect number? Well my number is degrees that is Mom and Ruby were on the bed under, not one but two blankets, hurdled together trying to keep warm when Mom noted the temperature on the AC. She saw the glowing number 68 and rolled over to see me sleeping on my back not panting... I heard her say "You've got to be kidding me" and then she rubbed my belly and I think she was happy I was finally comfortable even though she was shivering. With each season change, I have to adjust. Mom says it's because I'm a BIG BOY. She never had this stuff with Shannon or Ruby... I might have to guess that Mom will only rescue girls in the future. But for now I am the boy in the house keeping Mom on her toes and she seems fine with it. Now I want you all to keep my little secret. Mom has no clue that I went behind her back to do my article this month. And you know what I'm thinking? If I can send an ,,, I can surely figure out that air conditioning remote... This is Baltimore Bailey saying "STAY COOL EVERYONE".
AKC Code of Sportsmanship PREFACE: The sport of purebred dog competitive events dates prior to 1884, the year of AKC s birth. Shared values of those involved in the sport include principles of sportsmanship. They are practiced in all sectors of our sport: conformation, performance and companion. Many believe that these principles of sportsmanship are the prime reason why our sport has thrived for over one hundred years. With the belief that it is useful to periodically articulate the fundamentals of our sport, this code is presented. Sportsmen respect the history, traditions and integrity of the sport of purebred dogs. Sportsmen commit themselves to values of fair play, honesty, courtesy, and vigorous competition, as well as winning and losing with grace. Sportsmen refuse to compromise their commitment and obligation to the sport of purebred dogs by injecting personal advantage or consideration into their decisions or behavior. The sportsman judge judges only on the merits of the dogs and considers no other factors The sportsman judge or exhibitor accepts constructive criticism. The sportsman exhibitor declines to enter or exhibit under a judge where it might reasonably appear that the judge s placements could be based on something other than the merits of the dogs. The sportsman exhibitor refuses to compromise the impartiality of a judge. The sportsman respects the AKC bylaws, rules, regulations and policies governing the sport of purebred dogs. Sportsmen find that vigorous competition and civility are not inconsistent and are able to appreciate the merit of their competition and the effort of competitors. Sportsmen welcome, encourage and support newcomers to the sport. Sportsmen will deal fairly with all those who trade with them. Sportsmen are willing to share honest and open appraisals of both the strengths and weaknesses of their breeding stock. Sportsmen spurn any opportunity to take personal advantage of positions offered or bestowed upon them. Sportsmen always consider as paramount the welfare of their dog. Sportsmen refuse to embarrass the sport, the American Kennel Club, or themselves while taking part in the sport
Club News and Reminders Last year we had a warning on the use of cocoa mulch. Just a reminder of the toxic effects if your dogs would eat it. Be careful when purchasing mulch. Please make a note of Nikki Leighton s address. Apparently there are two Nicole Leightons. To get her new , contact Mary. The incorrect one uses Nicole where the correct one uses Nikki. It will be updated on the newest Member Roster that everyone receives. A huge thank you to Linda Scopa for holding our meeting in June, at her training facility. It was a bring your own dog gathering and it gave them a chance to try out the agility equipment and research different types of activities. Our next meeting is Thursday July 17 th at Ellen Holleran s. 7:00 p.m. The Halleran s live at 2397 Mill Grove Road, Pittsburgh, Contact Ellen for directions or use Map Quest.
