2 Eye & Heart Clinics Congratulations Dr. Robin Stanley (Eyes) Dr. Richard Woolley (Hearts) An Eye and Heart clinic is to be held on Wednesday 24th August, 2016 at Robin Stanley s rooms at 181 Darling Road, East Malvern starting at 5.00 pm to 7pm. Gonioscopy test available on the night. This test takes ten minutes and is to be done before general eye test. Cost is $27.50 Cost of the Eye Test will be $75 per dog ( includes ACES form of $10 ) with payment by cash, cheque, credit card, Eftpos. Gonioscopy test is $27.50 extra Cost of the Heart Test will be $40 per dog. Payment by cash only. Note that dogs need to be at least 12 months old for this test. Appointments for eye and heart tests can be made through Carol Stafford on All relevant paperwork ( registration, microchip ) to be available at time of appointment for each dog. Microchips will be checked for each dog. A second Eye clinic will be held on Saturday September 3rd, 2016 at same address. Please ring Animal Eye Care on to make appointments for this one. 6 GRCV Inaugural Track & Search Trial July 2016 The GRCV Inaugural Track and Search Trial was held on the weekend of 30 and 31 July 2016, with base at KCC Park and tests held in the surrounding areas of Cranbourne. Three judges were contracted and a total of 41 entries were received. One scratching was received so a total of 40 dogs and handlers were judged over the two days. The weather was very kind to us. Breakdown of dogs entered was as follows: 7 toys, 3 Terriers, 15 Gundogs, 2 Hounds, 8 Working Dogs, 4 Utility, 1 Non Sporting. A high pass rate was achieved with 32 qualifying scores and 8 titles gained (from 40 entries). Four Golden Retrievers competed, all receiving passes. The event would not have been possible without the generous support of both the Golden Retriever Club Vic main committee and Working Dog sub-committee. Volunteers came from all dog disciplines (not just from the tracking fraternity) - with helpers from retrieving, RATG, obedience and conformation disciplines generously offering their time and support. Some of these helpers observed tracks and enjoyed learning about the sport we so love. Our President, Jennie Coutlemanis, generously came on both days to help in the kitchen and to welcome the competitors at presentations. (She was a whiz cutting up the pizzas!). Two of our judges are also members of the GRCV main committee (Rob Tester and Kim Houlden) so it was definitely a club affair!! Thank you also to Elizabeth Mitchell (another main committee member) for her generous support of the raffle. Woofpurnay kindly donated the main raffle prize, which was won by Carol Stafford. Thank you also to my husband Ron and daughter Sarah who helped with the preparations and manning the pizza oven at lunch times. Good friends kept me afloat and helped me so much and joined in the celebrations of our successes. Feedback from competitors, judges, helpers has been overwhelmingly positive. It was great to see everyone from the club working together to make the event such a success. The Club recognized a net profit of $ (due in part to generous donations for goods such as sandwiches and fillings, BBQ gas, condiments, gluten free items and all raffle prizes and sundry purchases). 9 It s official! Your dog loves being petted. And most dogs simply can t get enough of it. Animal behaviour researchers have really cool jobs, and the researcher who did the study must have had a lot of fun in her research. It was published in the journal Behavioural Processes under the cute title Shut up and pet me! A good petting beats vocal praise Let s not get this wrong. Vocal praise is rewarding for your dog, but if your pet can choose between petting and vocal praise, he ll pick a good petting any day of the week. The researchers theorised that being receptive to vocal praise is a learned response, but that a love of being petted was an inborn response. Dogs in the experiment cuddled up to strangers who were willing to pet them even when their owners were nearby giving vocal praise. What kind of petting do dogs like? A lot of people pat dogs on the head. The truth is, most dogs don t really like that. To them, an approach from above is intimidating. Areas where most dogs like being petted include the base of the tail, the back of the neck and under the chin. Of course, every dog is different, but generally speaking the ears, muzzle, paws and tail aren t favourite petting spots. Most dogs love a motion that s similar to a gentle massage well they would, wouldn t they? They show their enjoyment by leaning in Ahhh! That s nice! Your pet tolerates but probably doesn t like Patting motions Confining hugs Hard slapping You also don t want to over excite your dog, so keep it gentle and not too vigorous. A little vigorous petting may be fine in playful situations, but be careful. An over-excited dog may even give you a sharp nip out of excitement rather than malice. Some dogs actually enjoy being hugged and cuddled, but this is learned response. Watch your dog to see if he or she isn t feeling quite comfortable with hugging or cuddles. Most dogs aren t. You can tell what your dog likes by watching his or her reactions. Tensing up, avoiding eye-contact and putting ears back or licking their lips are all signs of a dog who is not altogether happy. A dog who is enjoying his petting will lean in towards you, while a dog who isn t too happy with the form of attention you re giving will tend to lean away. Teach your kids Kids can get away with just about anything when they re petting or playing with the family dog, but it can be unpleasant for the dog, and someone else s pet may not be as tolerant. Even the family dog can lose patience, so good manners towards dogs should be taught for the sake of your child s safety and your dog s sanity. Teach your children how to pet a dog and show them how they can make friends with other people s pets safely. One of the key lessons is to ask the dog s owner if it s ok to pet their dog. Approaching strange dogs can have tragic consequences. Petting your dog is good for you too! It s not just your dog that chills out and enjoys himself when he s getting petted. You ve probably noticed that making a fuss of your pet makes you feel good, but it s also good for your health. A study showed that 15 minutes of dog-petting improved the levels of the feel-good hormones serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin while reducing the concentration of the stress hormone cortisol. And that s not all. Petting your dog lowers your heart rate and your blood pressure too, and researchers are working on ways to use dog petting as a therapy for people with high blood pressure. Food rewards still rock Fido s world Petting is fabulous, but you don t have to feel as if you are depriving your dog if you don t pet him constantly. Food rewards are still number one on the canine list of favourite things. The good thing about this is that you can keep giving your dog rewards even when you re not at home. Obviously just having a bowl of food at hand for random snacking won t work and your dog could end up overweight. 15 CODE OF ETHICS OF THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB OF VIC INC VCA CODE OF ETHICS 1. Members must abide by the VCA Code of Ethics, and any laws, by-laws and regulations of the federal and state governments and the relevant local council. STANDARD OF THE BREED 2. The Breed Standard is a written criterion developed by the Golden Retriever Club of the United Kingdom and accepted by the Victorian Canine Association (VCA), which describes the ideal Golden Retriever. Members shall breed only for the purpose of improving the quality of the breed, and not for the pet shop market or any other commercial purpose. VCA RULES & REGULATIONS 3. Members shall ensure that when selling or transferring a dog to another person that documents as required by the VCA Inc. Rules and/or Regulations, will be provided to the purchaser or transferee. 4. Members shall ensure that each dog to be used for breeding or to be shown or worked is properly registered with the VCA, in accordance with the understanding of the purchaser. 5. Members must maintain accurate breeding and litter records. HEREDITARY DEFECTS, HEALTH & BREEDING 6. Members owning stud dogs shall be selective in the bitches they accept, in terms of soundness and hereditary defects, and as the owner of a stud dog, ensure that the owner of the dam has the ability and the necessary facilities to successfully whelp, raise and assure the future well being of any resulting litter. They also have an obligation to assist the breeder as needed and/or requested. 7. As the owner of the dam, members shall ensure that the owner of the sire has the knowledge and experience to provide a safe and supervised mating, including the diligent care of the dam. 8. Members shall endeavour to breed dogs that are as free as possible from hereditary defects including Hip Dysplasia, eye disorders (which include Cataracts, PRA, Distichiasis and Entropian), bad temperament and structural defects. 9. Members shall ensure that at all times all dogs under their control are properly housed, fed, watered, exercised and receive proper veterinary attention, if and when required. 10. That excepting in extenuating circumstances, Members shall not allow any bitch kept by them or registered in their name to be mated before it is eighteen months of age. Thereafter Members shall not breed from any bitch kept by them or registered in their name more than twice in any 18-month period. Members will not breed any bitch kept by them or registered in their name more than four times without prior veterinary certification of fitness for further breeding. 11. Members shall not permit any pure bred dog owned by them or registered in their name to be mated to a dog of a different breed, to a cross-bred dog, or to an unregistered dog of the same breed. SELLING OR DONATING 12. Members shall not sell or allow any dog to be sold to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers, or directly or indirectly to allow a dog to be given as a prize or donation in a contest of any kind, or auction or allow to be auctioned any dog owned by them or registered in their name. 13. Members shall ensure that all persons acquiring dogs from them clearly understand their responsibility for the care and welfare of the animal, and that they have the time and facilities (i.e. adequate fences, sufficient room and proper shelter, etc.) to meet their obligations. The concept of a dog being a LIFETIME commitment should always be reinforced with the purchaser. 14. Members shall provide to all purchasers of dogs placed by them, written details of all dietary and immunisation requirements and/or an appropriate publication relating to such requirements and responsible dog ownership. Regardless of age, spaying or neutering of all dogs sold, as companions should be actively encouraged. 15. Members shall not sell or otherwise transfer from their care any puppy under eight weeks of age, thus allowing for vaccination to be given at six weeks of age, and the necessary ten to fourteen days for the vaccine to take effect. Members shall not export a puppy under the age of 12 weeks. HONESTY IN REPRESENTATION 16. Members shall not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed, nor falsely advertise, or mislead any person regarding the performance of any dog, and at all times shall adhere to proper and ethical business practices when breeding, selling and placing their dogs. COMMUNITY RELATIONS 17. Members shall not allow any dogs under their care to roam at large and when away from home ensure they are kept fully leashed, or under effective control, at all times. Any member failing to observe any provisions of the Code of Ethics may be dealt with under the Rules of the Club. GUNS N SASHES 15
