That means we accept strays and surrenders without restriction and prepare them for adoption by providing housing, food, medical care, training, and enrichment. In 2017 we adopted out 867 shelter pets. However, that only begins to tell the story of SASF s role as the preeminent community resource for animals in the Hamptons. Our Spring Newsletter highlights some of the other ways SASF is expanding its community outreach and impacting the people and animals in our area. Our Humane Education Program, Humane Humans: It s Cool to be Kind is our most recent initiative. This important program focuses on teaching empathy towards all living creatures and highlights ways that students can be animal advocates. Already 500 students have participated in this program. Another important community program is Advo-Cats, our humane and effective way of helping to stop the overpopulation of feral cats. Last year our medical department spayed/neutered and vaccinated over 1,100 cats and we are preparing for another busy year. One program that I am particularly proud of is the one focused on our Patiently Waiting Pets, animals that have spent too long at the shelter. We have developed individual support plans that include incremental training and specific promotional outreach. I invite you to read about some of our recent successes because of our efforts. SASF is making a meaningful difference in our community and provides many opportunities to become engaged with and support the organization. Come join us. Sincerely, Jerry Rosenthal COVER STORY A FOREVER HOME Eight-month-old puppy, Bacon, was surrendered to our shelter when his family had to move. The Miller family saw his picture and knew he would be the perfect addition to complete their family. Bacon is now living comfortably with his new doggie brother and human siblings! We were so impressed with the adoption process. Everyone cared so deeply about our new dog being placed in an appropriate home. With so many dogs looking for homes we felt it was important to teach our children the beauty of adoption. -Adam Miller 2
COMMUNITY OUTREACH HUMANE EDUCATION Offering animal advocacy programs for local school districts We are excited to announce the launch of our Humane Education Program, Humane Humans: It s Cool to be Kind, a program intended to educate the 2nd and 5th grade students on humane treatment for animals. The program is designed to promote kindness and compassion for animals and provide information about the role that SASF plays in the community. Created by New York State certified teachers and shelter staff, the lessons are designed to meet DASA, Common Core and other state and federal mandates. The program covers topics of stray animals, cruelty and abuse, responsible pet guardianship, resources available at SASF, and explores scenarios to allow students to differentiate positive and negative experiences with animals. For More Information: PETS x237 christina@sasf.org ADVO-CATS The kittens are coming! Kittens are born year-round and though SASF helps many of these defenseless fur babies, more keep coming. One female cat and her offspring can produce an average of 168 cats in one year. The situation is urgent. We have a solution: Advo-Cats to the rescue! Our TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release) program is the most humane and effective way to help stop the overpopulation of feral cats in our community. Advo-Cats operates with the help of volunteers to trap feral cats so our medical team can alter, vaccinate, and prepare them for release. This is a free program offered to residents in the Township of Southampton and is run solely on donations. Help us Trap/Neuter/Release and vaccinate stray and feral cats, no cost to you. Please call x237 MOBILE CLINIC Our mobile spay and neuter surgical clinic operates out of a fully functional state-of-theart surgical room on wheels. Our mobile clinic is equipped with everything you would find in a veterinary operating room. We travel to underserved communities and offer low-cost spays and neuters. We also provide low-cost vaccinations and microchipping. In 2017, we served over 2,100 animals. Check our website for locations and schedule or call (631)
WORKING TOGETHER FOR CHANGE DEATH ROW RESCUES Saving from NYC Shelters We saw an urgent post from the Animal Care and Control in NYC a young, sick cat was going to be euthanized Brent was severely dehydrated, underweight, and had an upper respiratory infection. With the help of volunteers, SASF was able to rescue sick, scared Brent, and bring out the happy, playful cat he really is! Brent is now making friends and sleeping comfortable while he looks for his forever family. Before After RESCUE UPDATES Support Our Rescue Program Save a life today! After Hurricane Maria, Irma was rescued from Puerto Rico. She was in poor condition and needed a lot of love and care. After being adopted from our shelter, her family has nothing but good things to say about their new family member. As the saying goes, who rescued who? Having Charly (formerly Irma) come into our lives has been a total kismet experience. It was meant to be. On November 15, 2018 we officially adopted Charly and my heart is so full of love for this little girl. Before Charly was from Puerto Rico and her first snowfall was definitely a little bit of a shock. But she is doing great and we can t thank the caring volunteers at the SASF enough! - Jill Griffin-Hughes & David Hughes After A WARRIOR S FRIEND Marley was surrendered to us because his family decided that he was too big and took up too much time. Our training and behavior team knew that a dog as smart as Marley would do great as a service dog. After working with our knowledgeable and experienced training team, Marley was accepted into the K9s for Warriors Program. Completing the intense training, Marley, now known as Mason, graduated from K9s for Warriors and is now serving his warrior. WELLNESS CLINIC 4 Appointments for our low-cost inhouse wellness clinic are available on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. We provide Wellness Exams, Spay and Neuter Procedures, Vaccinations, Heartworm Tests, Nail Clipping, Flea and Tick Prevention, Microchipping, Dental Cleaning, Minor Tooth Extractions. For more information, please call (631) ext. 226
HAPPY TAILS Patiently Waiting Pets Patiently Waiting Pets are those who have been residing at our shelter for a year or more. As they wait for the right family to come along and fall in love, our staff provides incremental behavior and training, enhanced housing, individually tailored promotion. Our support continues post-adoption with medical care and training, as needed. Each of these Patiently Waiting cats and dogs is deserving of a home and is hoping the right family will come by and fall in love. Through a team effort of training and behavior staff, our medical team, and adoption coordinators, SASF has been working to find a forever family for each of these pets! MILLER was found as a stray, wandering the streets of Hampton Bays. We couldn t believe that no one came to claim such a cute, playful dog. Miller was at SASF for a year waiting for a family to welcome him into their home. Finally, in August of 2017, Miller found a couple that knew he was perfect for them! Miller is now living the adventurous life he deserves! ROMEO arrived to SASF in 2013 as a stray, but because of his diabetes, he had a hard time finding a family to call his own. Finally, someone fell in love with sweet Romeo and knew they needed to take him home. After meeting Romeo, his new mom also met long-term SASF resident, Lacey. LACEY came to us as a kitten in 2008, and was having a difficult time finding a family. After 3,544 days at our shelter, Lacey went to her forever family with her friend, Romeo. Finally, after spending years in a shelter, these two sweet cats are finally experiencing having a home of their own. Their new human mom is thrilled to have them, They are very sweet. I m so happy they re here! ESPERANZA is a shy dog rescued from Puerto Rico, who was at our shelter for 675 days. While she was lucky to spend some of her time with a foster family, Espie was dreaming of her forever home. It may have taken awhile for Espie to find the home of her dreams, but when she met her human mom, she knew she was going to be safe and comfortable for the rest of her life! BERNIE spent 707 days at our shelter before finding the family of his dreams. He s now living his best life in North Carolina with his forever family. Bernie has been an awesome addition to our family. He s extremely affectionate and funny. We have been entertained by his loud snoring and the way he plays with his toys on his back. Thanks SASF! Love, Shay and Pat. 5
SAVE THE DATE Greg is highly respected, widely followed, and his sense of history and perspective on events and community goings-on put him in a unique position in setting the vision for our 2018 Unconditional Love Gala. With Greg taking the lead, it s surely going to be a very beautiful, elegant, much fun, and very special evening for all Unconditional Love Gala Chairman Gregory D Elia and SASF dog, Bernie, who was recently adopted! - Clifton Knight Co-President SASF Board 6
YOUR GIFT MAKES A DIFFERENCE SASF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that relies on the generosity of its donors and volunteers. The number of animals in need is growing every day. On Long Island, and across the country, the overpopulation of pets continues to be a huge problem sadly leaving many homeless. Without organizations like SASF these animals would not be able to survive. As the ONLY open admission shelter in our community accepting strays and surrenders without restrictions, we are a haven for all animals, and for some, a last resort. Your donation helps us provide a stepping stone for animals to find a loving home offering them housing, food, medical care, training and rehabilitation when necessary. WAYS TO GIVE SPONSOR A PET Sponsor a shelter animal to show your support. Simply choose a homeless pet at our shelter that has touched your heart, and donate toward the care of that pet. Pet sponsorships also make great gifts for animal lovers. WISH LIST Support our animals by purchasing much needed food and supplies from our Amazon Wish List. And, sign on to Amazon Smile to select Southampton Animal Shelter as your charity of choice. Our pets will get donations from Amazon every time you shop. GIFT DONATION Celebrate a loved one s birthday, graduation or other special occasion with a gift donation in their honor. MEMORIAL DONATION Make a donation in memory of a person or pet. Engraved brick or plaque dedications can also be made in their honor at $150 or more. PLANNED GIVING & PET BEQUESTS Including SASF in your will or trust will create a legacy to help pets and people in need for years to come. You can also make provisions to ensure your pets will be cared for in the event of your passing. OTHER WAYS TO GIVE IN-KIND DONATIONS Support our shelter programs by donating goods and services. We can use everything from office and pet supplies to auction items for our gala to cookies and brownies for our bake sales. VOLUNTEERING We could not do everything we do for our shelter animals without the support of our extraordinary, dedicated volunteers. Last year, volunteers donated nearly 10,000 hours to the shelter. And, we appreciate every hour! However, we always need more help. There are many ways you can contribute as a volunteer from working with our animals to clerical work to working specials events that help raise funds for the pets in our care. FOSTERING Become a foster pet parent by providing temporary care to animals not yet ready for adoption. Volunteers in our foster program care for animals in their homes, giving those that are underweight, underage, sick or injured the time they need to grow or heal. CORPORATE & BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS SASF offers excellent corporate and business opportunities tailored to fit the joint needs of both your company and the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation. STRATEGIC CAPITAL FUND Fund high impact projects critical to the operation of our facility and services. Capital improvements at our shelter include current and future expansion or renovation of areas in the building, as well as the purchase of equipment, or sponsorship of new initiatives. ENDOWMENT FUND Ensure a sustainable future by funding our good work. Donations, which are prudently invested, provide ongoing support income to our organization.
