1 SHELTER NEWSLETTER OCT.NOV.DEC Amazing Rescues One of the most critical cases we worked on were three kittens found at a local dairy/ice cream store. Customers at the dairy brought these tiny kittens to us desperately needing help. These babies were suffering from bronchitis - much more dangerous than an upper respiratory infection. Their eyes were pasted shut with severe swelling. They were not even responding to the strongest medicines and they had to spend a few days in intensive care at Country Doctor. Miraculously, and with much hard work, they pulled through. It is a real shame that the dairy store is unwilling to spay/neuter their colony of strays after such effort went into saving these. These youngsters are spayed and neutered, and are ready for a loving home. Another tough case (although there were many at this location) came out of an industrial plant where there are sick and dying kittens. Our volunteers have worked all year to TNR (trap-neuter-release) over 70 cats at the facility. Little Xavier and Wilson were lucky enough to be found as kittens before much more harm could be done. Xavier had to have an enlarged eye removed due to infection, and his other eye is scarred but he can see out of it. He really counts on his brother Wilson to be there for him, and we hope they can be adopted together. Although the focus can easily be on kittens, we don't forget how close some adults were to being cruelly forgotten. It was amazing to find W endall, a large black neutered and declawed male, skinny and trying to survive the streets of Palmerton. He must have been attacked by a Felv positive cat (Feline Leukemia Virus), because he has tested positive. He has put on weight and will make a wonderful companion, with many years of love left to give. Please help us make the second phase of his amazing rescue, an adoptive home. He is leery of our FeLv colony, obviously from being attacked on the streets, and is having a hard time adjusting here. And there is Trudy, a 4 year old declawed calico who was left behind when her abusive owner was arrested. Since she was kicked and treated poorly, she can be a biter if over-stimulated. She can now be held and loves playing with her toys. Most shelters would have euthanized her and not given her a chance. We hope someone out there will give her a chance as well, as we work her through her fears. To find out more information on these rescues or any of our other adoptable cats, please call Therese at or fffadoption@verizon.net 1

2 October-November-December 2016 Available for Adoption All of our adoptable cats are spayed or neutered, up to date on rabies and distemper shots, dewormed, defleaed, FeLV tested, ears checked and microchipped. Please share this page with family and friends and post it at work, vets office, community boards, etc. We can all make a difference for the animals. Emily was rescued from a bad situation in Palmerton. She was in foster care for a while enjoying an indoor life of play, eating well and being loved by humans. Now Emily is still waiting for her forever home at the shelter. She loves to jump up on the sofa and sit with you for pettings. She is spayed, up to date on shots and Felv neg. Mozzie was rescued from under a bridge with her kittens. She likes to sit on top of the kitty condo by the door so she s the first one to get attention from visitors. She purrs when petted and brushed. She would be good in a quiet adult home where she can acclimate to one room. Versace is a mixed Siamese who was found as a stray. He has been to a vet, neutered, shots, and leukemia neg. but FIV positive. This is not really a health issue because it is only transmitted thru biting or sexual activity. He is a friendly and playful boy between 2 & 3 yrs old. He does not seem to like other cats, but loves human attention. Sally is a very sweet and gentle girl who was found at a college campus. She tested positive for feline leukemia but the stress of living with the other Leukemia cats was too much for her. It would be great if someone could find it in their heart to adopt her so she wouldn t have to spend her life in a cage. She is spayed and up to date on shots. Any medical issues would be covered by the shelter. Cleo came to us in March of 2013 after her owner died. Adjusting to shelter life was rough for her, she doesn t like being with other cats in the adoption room, but she loves human attention. She s been diagnosed with urinary crystals and has to be on prescription food which her adopter can purchase at the shelter. She is spayed, up to date on shots and Felv negative. Vinny is a very active and social young man. He has a long story that he would be glad to tell you if you come to visit him. He is a very charming fellow, but has a dominant personality when it comes to other cats at the shelter. He did live with other cats at one time. He is neutered, 6 yrs old, up to date on shots and Felv neg. Olivia was returned due to issues resulting from her being overweight but since being at the shelter and on a wet food diet, has lost the extra weight. She is a wonderful 4 yr old, friendly and loving and longs for human attention She purrs when talked to and loves to be petted. She is spayed, up to date on shots and Felv neg and Microchipped. Nigel is a wonderful boy with a purr-fect personality. He is 5 yrs old and will do well with dogs or female cats. He is on prescription food, which we can assist with the cost. H e is healthy with good litterbox habits. He is neutered, Felv neg and up to date on sh ots. 3 October-November-December 2016 Adoption Stories Send your adoption stories to We would love to hear from you. Maxwell aka Marty: I fell in love with the crazy little guy the minute I saw him. I brought my then 89 year old mom up to adopt a senior cat that we saw on the website, and there he was right next to Gordo. My mom and Gordo are doing wonderful today - they were a match made in heaven! I had to wait for Max since he seemed to have a constant cold. His story was a sad one, found on the side of the road near the shelter. He was just so darn lovable, I looked past the sneezing. After waiting for over a month, and a few antibiotics later, I convinced everyone I could take care of the little bugger. He ate too fast and he sneezed his food right out his nose. He came home, adjusted right away. We were expecting a puppy in a few weeks and I wanted to get him adjusted to his new home. Abbey (our sheltie) and Maxwell are very close today. As we went along, the cold never seemed to go away. We couldn t figure out why he kept getting food into his nose. Max was born with a clef palate! He needed major surgery to close it up! We discovered this at the doctor, finally when she was able to open his mouth and saw the gaping hole in the roof of his mouth! As you can see he s grown into quite the handsome young man. He is the sweetest cat, loves car rides, and is shy around big crowds. Around us, he is just a lover. He weighs in at 16lbs, hasn t stopped woofing his food down (he so loves to eat!) We also still have Bubbi, who is 16 years old, that we adopted back in December of 1999, she is an orange and white tabby just like Max. She and Max are often cuddling together. He also still has his teddy bear and does lay with it now and then. Thank you for giving us such wonderful companions as well as my mom too! -Brenda My name is Ruthie Himmelberger. I am a gray, domestic short-hair 9 year old cat whose elderly parents had to give me up for adoption last May. I spent approximately 7 months with Forgotten Felines. In December, my new parents-to-be came to visit the shelter. In the first picture of me, you can see how sad and sick I felt. I had an ear infection and had three teeth that needed to be extracted. The loving staff at Forgotten Felines took care of my ear infection and gave me the medicine I needed, and when that cleared up, my new family adopted me. They took me to the veterinarian who cleaned my teeth and extracted the infected ones. I have a 17 year old step-brother, Jeff, a very laid back, kindly cat and a 10 year old gray, shy step-sister, Zoe. My new forever home has a wonderful perch for me to sit on and watch birds in the yard, a fun crinkly tunnel toy that I love to hide in, and laps that are always ready to cuddle me. Just wanted to let you know that I am happy, healthy, and very much loved in my new home. ( Typed for Ruthie by Melanie) Nobody Likes Cages One of the worst things for our cats and our volunteers is to see cats caged indefinitely. It is almost always because the cat does not get along with other cats and may hurt another, or be hurt. So please consider Versace when adopting. This huge Siamese mix is a real lover, but prefers to be an only cat. He is FIV positive (Feline Immune Deficiency Virus), likely contracted by a bite from another. Healthy, with a full life ahead, but with a stigma attached that hurts his chance of being adopted! Also consider Sally, a black, petite FeLv positive girl. She rolls around with the slightest touch, craving attention. She is petrified of other cats and has not adjusted in our leukemia cottage. We would be happy to provide medical care to her adoptive home. 3

4 October-November-December 2016 For Cats Eyes Only by Sir Alexander Hello my fuzzy friends. How has the summer treated you? I do hope you all had a week or two of solitude when your humans went on vacation. I so look forward to that. What I m not looking forward to is the holiday called Halloween. That s where everyone puts on silly costumes and acts ridiculous. My human even goes to the extreme of dressing up dumble dog. No matter how many costumes they put on him, he s still ugly. After that holiday comes wonderful Thanksgiving where, for a crafty cat, the pickings are easy. Humans become very generous when they re fully stuffed with turkey and we can really score big at the dinner table. I like to gently touch their leg and tilt my head a bit with soulful eyes when asking for a handout. This works every time, so do try this and I hope you get lots of goodies too. A Much Needed Garage Cleaning Monday, Aug 22, a work group from Optum Customer Cares came to the shelter to tackle the project of cleaning out the garage. And just like at home, we found all kinds of things that we have stored for years, but never used. We were well intentioned, nevertheless. We were lucky enough to have a break in the weather with much less humidity and cooler temperatures. It was a perfect day. Even though we worked hard and got very dirty there was plenty of time for some fun and laughter. We even managed to check out some of our kitties. Could there be a possible adoption in the future??? Thank you again for your willingness to volunteer and to your company for participating. We are so appreciative of the help! Pictured in the photos are Kim, Deb, Kathy and Mickey along with Kim's children Cody and Gabby. Thank you! With your help each year, we are able to care for the 150 cats at our shelter. Whether they are seniors with medical conditions, or feral cats that are beyond taming, or our special Feline Leukemia cottage group, these cats will live out their life here. Your membership keeps us going. We can provide food, medicines, including insulin for our diabetic cats. We can provide low cost spay and neuter, or NO COST, to low income individuals who qualify. Expensive surgeries such as eye removals, or amputations are possible because of our membership drive. And now we are facing an increasing amount of dental work for those as they age. Being an all volunteer group, your donations go directly to the animals. We appreciate your help in the past and hope we can count on you this year! We and the cats thank you! 4
