Available for Adoption Abigail was rescued from a trailer park and was someone s pet they abandoned. She loves to cuddle and prefers being held more than anything else. She is FeLV positive, but could have many more years of love to give. They don't come any sweeter! 1 yr old female. Chiara was from a litter born outside and socialized by an elderly woman who could not properly care for her, but did her best. This kitty has made great strides and is affectionate and playful. She would prefer an adult only home. Almost 1 yr old. Eclipse was found in our huge trash dumpster looking for food. He was already neutered. He may be 2-3 yrs old, is young at heart and very active. If you like big boys, this guy is large and we don't mean chubby! Naomi is a beautiful orange tabby who was found as a wild kitten. She loves attention, but has not thrived within the group setting. She tolerates the others, but would do well as the only cat in the home. An adult home would suit her best. Soozie is a big male tabby who is a couch potato. He loves attention but not big on being picked up. At 8 yrs. old we hate seeing a cat enter a shelter when at this point he should be in a loving home. Please help him find his. Sugar came from the streets of Brooklyn which explains her alpha personality. She's the first to greet you at the door but still has been looking for a home for 2 yrs. If you want a self sufficient, low maintenance, small built cat (who is cute as heck), Sugar is your girl. She says adult home only please. Photo courtesy of Cruver Photography. Jenner was found at the front door of the shelter. He was already declawed, neutered and had a Perineal Urethostomy operation. A lot of money had been spent on him only to end up at the shelter. He is only a few yrs. old & is afraid of other cats so he spends his time in a cage. He eats CD prescription food for a healthy diet. He is in need of a home asap. Kia & Kaleena are sisters who can be adopted separately. They were found when a call came in about a mom cat with kittens. No one in the neighborhood would help and these young sisters were doomed without anyone even wanting to feed them. We were lucky to find mom a home after spaying, but these sisters were traumatized. They made great progress in their foster home, but regressed after losing that one-on-one daily attention needed to gain their trust. They are affectionate and able to learn. An adult home with time to give would be ideal. Approx. 1 yr old. 1
Forgotten Felines Awarded a Petfinder Grant! We are happy to announce a wonderful opportunity we were given by being awarded grant money through the Petfinder Foundation. For the past 20 years, Petfinder has helped 25 million pets find their families through adoption. The site is the home of 239,814 adoptable pets from 13,738 adoption groups. So you can imagine our surprise to be one of the lucky shelters picked to receive grant money. We want to share the stories of those animals we were able to help with this gift. Josh - 10 mth old male While implementing TNR at a local home, we were made aware that cats were mysteriously disappearing. Whether predators or poisoning, we attempted to save what friendly cats we could. Josh was the only one friendly enough that could be adopted, that was, until he physically began to decline. He had Bordetella virus as well as a polyp in each ear. From Aug /24/17, he has been under anesthesia 4x to either scope and/or operate, with trips to a specialist who had the tools to perform the surgery. Now after his ordeal, he is finally starting to put on weight and grow. His growth was stunted due to lack of oxygen as the polyps blocked his nasal flow. His lazy eye ('Horners Syndrome', a side effect of the ear polyps) has even corrected. He resides with his foster family, where he is therapy for a young boy battling Crohn s disease. We thank the Petfinder Grant for allowing us to follow through with Josh's care. Buford - 9 mth old male While providing financial assistance to a low income family, we uncovered a hoarding situation with 20 neglected cats. It prompted them to start bringing them into our low cost spay/neuter program. They had no money to spay their animals, let alone provide them medical treatment. Buford was one of the worst with a deformed eye that may have been the result of inbreeding. But he had also endured months of an upper respiratory virus which caused a terrible ulcer, and an infection in his good eye. This eye had to be removed, leaving him with what he basically had anyway, the ability to possibly see just shadows and light. He is thriving. He jumps up on the bed and is walking around exploring, without bumping into anything. With his wonderful personality, he is a great candidate for adoption. Thanks to the Petfinder Grant which has helped us tremendously. This came at a perfect time, right as we incurred a massive expense with just this one group of needy cats. Zelina - 3 yr old female Zelina was abandoned at the end of our driveway in a carrier with a note. Her owner passed away and the cat had no where to go. It stated there was an on-going skin issue and Zelina received monthly steroid injections. This friendly cat is enduring much discomfort and continually wears an elizabethan collar to prevent her from mutilating herself. Our soonest appointment for an allergist will be in April. She is a sweet girl. Thank you to the Petfinder Grant that enabled us a comprehensive exam so we can hopefully cure her once and for all. Screwball yr old female This neglected cat was brought into our low cost spay program severely underweight, pregnant, and suffering from an eye that had ruptured from infection. She had lived with an upper respiratory virus that eventually destroyed her eye. Her bad eye was removed, and after a long bout of antibiotics, this young cat is back to feeling herself, playful and energetic and ready for a real home. As we continue to address the other cats in that home, we are grateful for the Petfinder Grant to aid us in this work. We are very aware that Screwball may have had to be euthanized if funds were not there to remove her eye. 2
More cats we were able to help through the grant from the Petfinder Foundation Mylie - 2 yr old female Mylie came in as a stray to be spayed through our low cost program. We took her in because her eye would have been a disability for a life outside. It looked damaged as if scarred from a fight. We were advised it was an old injury and she was adopted quickly. Thanks to our return policy, she was brought back only after 1 year due to a new baby in the home. However, even though losing her home, it was her lucky day. That old injury had progressed into something serious and she had a slightly enlarged globe. Upon exam, fluid was found behind the eye which was precancerous if the eye remained. Mylie had her eye enucleated with help from the Petfinder Grant. Before her surgery she was visited by a wonderful family. She climbed on their chest and snuggled like she never left her home. Her new home is waiting for her until she recovers from surgery, and it is clear that this is her forever home. Thank you Petfinder for helping with this unexpected and emergency surgery! Smokey - 10 yr old Male Smokey is one of our resident seniors who developed Stomatitis, a painful swelling of the mouth and gums, which can be life threatening and unfortunately a common disease. Normal treatment is to pull every tooth to eliminate the pain and improve healing. The Petfinder grant allowed us to properly treat Smokey with dental x-rays and a full extraction to improve his quality of life. Photo courtesy of Cruver Photography. Pilar - 2 yr old female While implementing TNR at an industrial site Pilar was found trying to survive with no shelter and competing with 70 other cats for food. Because she was a sweet girl, after spaying she went straight to a foster home. The hopes of a home diminished as her missing fur and bald patches on her body got worse. With the help of the Petfinder grant, she was able to have a proper exam and consultation to determine if this is behavioral or allergies. We hope Pilar will find relief and a home soon. Not only has Petfinder helped with adoptions and grant money, but has also provided seminars to educate shelters. There is a wonderful online source of pet information on their website For Cats Eyes Only By Sir Alexander Ahhh..Happy spring to all my fuzzy followers. Finally it s becoming good weather. I know you haven t heard from me lately, but the holidays were so exhausting for me. My human had to invite her relatives over and they spent the holidays with us, much to my dismay. You see they have two smaller humans who think it s acceptable to play with the pretty kitty. How revolting, I hid the whole time they were here. However dumble dog had a great time with them. They would all go outside and run and play all day. By nightfall all three of them were exhausted and slept the nite away. This gave me my much needed quiet prowl time. I was so glad to see them go and I surely hope that this year they all meet at someone else s house and take the stupid dog with them. If they do that, then Aunty will come over to take care of me and spoil me. I love her so, oh!... Birds... outside my window.must watch..bye. 3
Amazing Rescues It was during our spay/neuter surgery day when we met Franky, a big orange tom in a trap, brought in for TNR (trap-neuter-release). He had been caught by a volunteer who was secretly feeding strays behind a University who understood the importance of neutering. It was clear he was not fairing well. He was thin, loaded with ear mites, and infested with lice. His one eye was scarred with a white spot from an old injury. He was neutered and treated for his parasites, but his day of getting returned back outside took a different direction. He tested positive for FIV, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. With the condition he was in, including a suppressed immune system, his future was bleak living out on his own. We took him in and observed a transformation over time. We knew his demeanor was not of a wild cat trying to back up or trying to attack, but rather he was still as stone with his head always kept down. We petted him daily, but he stayed in one spot, without reaction, never raising his head. However he had a good appetite which grew as time went on. Days turned into weeks and we had a feeling he was likely destined to the 'Wild Side' condo, where we have our resident un-adoptables. But after 1 month during a petting session, he raised his head and looked us in the face! That was it, the purring began and he continued to improve, finally crossing that hurdle of trusting. He joined our senior group, even though he was only 2 yrs old because with a diagnosis of FIV, we assumed he would be around for a while waiting for the right home. After a few months, due to FIV, Franky developed dental problems and had most of his teeth extracted by our vet Dr. Jeanette. Yet he continued to blossom in the room so much so that he tried to assert dominance over poor Smokey who was having his own problems with Stomatitis. Franky may have been toothless, but he was ruthless! To our dismay, we had to cage Franky to protect Smokey, as FIV is only spread through deep bites. Now back in a cage, we worried that all the good that came out of him would be reversed. Thankfully, it didn't take long before he was noticed. This now sweet guy would look at his visitors as they come around the corner. A sweet retired couple noticed him and during the meet and greet, were quickly convinced he was the cat for them. They were not prejudiced about his FIV and he nicely sat on his mom s lap. He had been with us for 1 year and it was worth every minute to get him to where he needed to be that day! He has a new adjustment to make now, but is slowly getting there. He is still hesitant and uses the bottom of the linen closet, which they keep open for him. But he is enjoying longer and longer couch sessions and does like the grandchildren! Good luck buddy. Oh, and his name was changed from Franky to Frankie! From a trap to their couch, what an amazing rescue! If you've ever fed outside strays, your heart goes out to the little ones. They are less likely to survive and don't have the experience to understand the dangers. This is another reason why we heavily promote spay/neuter thru TNR, a proven method to stop animal suffering. Thanks to Joe, who was trying to get this small colony under control. In the group was Katy, a small skittish tiger who ran across the busy highway every day for feeding time. Katy arrived at FFF in a Have-a-Heart trap. After 14 days of quarantine and shyness, she was ready to try a foster home where she met daughter Abi and service dog Cupcake. She had a wonderful introduction, but was still hesitant to some degree. So it was back to the shelter for more interaction with different people. It was not long before she was spotted in our ads by Katherine who fell for her. She had just lost her cat due to old age. We provided a cage with more instruction and hoped for the best, knowing Katy needed that one on one interaction to socialize further. We are happy to report that Katy is adjusting and trusting her new mom more every day. With patience and love this innocent kitty is getting over her feral nature. Thanks to Denise for a chance at a foster home, and to Joe who finished his colony! From running across a busy road to snuggling under the blankets, it s another amazing rescue! 4
Special Fundraiser We want to thank Teri R. for her expertise in supplying and designing our latest baskets we have had the good fortune of raffling! They have raised hundreds of dollars per basket! They are loaded with fun stuff and some included a Longaberger basket (some rare retired ones). We thank her for her donations of the items and her time in putting them together. We owe much of the success in reaching ticket buyers to Jen and Alisa at Sato Salon Organics at 3136 Hamilton Blvd., Allentown, for displaying and selling the tickets at the hair salon. They have reached a lot of people so stop in for a cut and a raffle ticket! Jen is also an adopter who gave us the ultimate gift, a home for Logan. Thank you and the ladies of Sato Salon who have helped us fundraise with these awesome baskets from Teri! Also, tickets were sold by our Bingo volunteers who organized another fun and lively event. We appreciate all who participated. If you have an idea for a fundraiser or can watch one of our baskets at your business, please contact us ffffundraising@verizon.net Volunteers and Supporters We have arrived at an exciting time for a chance to have a veterinarian at the shelter 2 days a week! Dr. Jeanette has agreed to give us an extra day for surgery and/or health checks for our cats! With her help, we are able to do more and provide better care for our cats. Our surgery schedule has been swamped and our message to spay/neuter is hitting home with so many people that it has been hard to keep up with demands. We have also ventured into new territory with spay/neuter (TNR) for colonies that would otherwise have no help. We accomplished spaying/neutering 70+ cats at an industrial plant (only 2 more to go Barb G bless her soul!), and another 18 from a trailer court in March, all of which we covered the cost. We are reaching out more than ever before to prevent unwanted kittens and save animals from suffering. So Dr. Jeanette is very much needed here and we appreciate her dedication. To make this possible, we are looking for help, which will enable us to grow and keep our shelter as progressive as we can be. We will need back up positions for a few volunteer jobs. For those of you who find it hard to physically clean, or have not had the chance to see behind the scenes, it will be interesting and a learning experience. We also don't want to wear out the help we currently have been lucky to have! Here are the 6 current job areas: 1. Logging in surgery cats 5-7 pm on Monday night: Writing addresses, receipts, and collecting the payment for cats. 2. Writing the Rabies certificates with names and addresses off of their forms along side the person above, and setting the client's cat carrier in surgery room. 3. Helping with surgery room duties on the day of surgery: Tues. 9 am -? fluids, giving shots, applying flea treatment, ear mite treatment. Post op care of surgery cats - making sure they are put in clean cages and monitoring them. Medical experience is preferred. 4. Discharging surgery cats in the evening after surgery Tues. 6-8 pm and Thursday 6-8 pm. Explaining and handing out post surgical instructions. Also, collecting any unpaid balance due and writing a receipt for care. 5. Cleaning & sanitizing surgery room: Cages washed, floor vacuumed and mopped. Ideally needed Wed. & Fri. mornings for 1 1/2 hrs. If those morning hours cannot be filled, there is a possibility of late duty Tues. & Thurs. 8-9:30 pm. 6. People willing to set and monitor traps, and/ or transport. We will provide proper training and allow you to shadow one of us to see if this is something you'll feel comfortable doing before you jump right in! As all of the shelter work is, this too is very rewarding as well as a big help to those of us who may need a break from time to time. Thanks for all you do and hope to hear from you!
