INSIDE THIS ISSUE: A Word from Our President 1 A Word from Edgewood Civic Association s President I am looking forward to Civic Mtgs & Bulk Trash 1 our next Wednesday, Volunteers Needed 1 October 7 th meeting at Newsletter Submissions 1 7:30 p.m. where we will Quinoa Recipe 2 continue to hear and vote Mensaje de la Presidente 3 upon the improvements Board Member Contact Info Information on Bufo Toads Foundation Members/Classified Membership Application that will be done to our Civic Association Hall. We will also have Assistant Public Defender, W. Dale Miller NEXT CIVIC ASSO- who is running for Broward CIATION MEETINGS: County Judge Group 7 give a Civic Hall, 1790 Southwest 32nd Street at 7:30 Many people don t know or don t brief presentation at our meeting. p.m. on first Wednesday come out to vote for these of the month. Next 5 dates are: October 7th, individuals running for County Judge. Let s all learn why it is so November 4th, and December 2nd, 2015, then vital for us to vote. You can read more about Mr. Miller at January 6th and February 3rd, 2016 Edgewood is a great place to walk or bicycle around the BULK TRASH neighborhood and meet your DATES: Bulk neighbors whether it is on your Trash pickup: the street or down at Passive Park, but it is very frustrating when I First Thursday of see the litter and cigarette butts each month October 1st and November 5th. Garbage: Every Tuesday and Volunteers Needed Friday. Recycling Cart: We are looking for volunteers to Every Tuesday. Yard be block/street captains to facilitate communication within the Edgewood on the Web! neighborhood. Please board@edgewoodcivic.org if you are interested in being the captain for your street. on the sidewalks or on the road. Not only does it look unsightly but also it decreases property values up to 10%. I know garbage comes out of the trash cans when picked up or people littering, but how nice would it be to walk or drive down the road and not see beer bottles, used diapers, plastic bottles etc. Let s all do our part by picking up the litter we see even if the garbage on your property is not yours. It will not only make you feel good but make our neighborhood a lot nicer place to live. I also want to remind the residents of Edgewood to ask their neighbors, family, friends and visitors to keep their speed down in the neighborhood. It is very easy to not pay attention and drive a little too fast on Southwest 15 th Avenue and the side streets. Remember that we have many children and animals in Newsletter Submissions Please send newsletter submissions to: editor@edgewoodcivic.org. The ECA welcome articles of interest, recipes, clean jokes. If you are an advertiser, we invite you to write about your subject matter, helpful tips for homeowners, selecting a vendor, etc. We would very much like articles written in Spanish as well. Like our new masthead? You can thank ECA Trustee Stu Goldman, a very experienced print media person. -Editor

2 PAGE 2 Recipe: Quinoa with Latin Flavors INGREDIENTS 1 cup quinoa, (see Note) 2 teaspoons canola oil 1 medium onion, chopped ounce can chopped green chiles 2 cloves garlic, minced ounce can reduced-sodium chicken broth, or vegetable broth 1/4 cup pepitas, toasted (see Note) 3/4 cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro 1/2 cup chopped scallions 2 tablespoons lime juice 1/4 teaspoon salt 1. Toast quinoa in a large dry skillet over medium heat, stirring often, until it crackles and becomes aromatic, 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a fine sieve and rinse thoroughly. 2. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring often, until softened, 2 to 3 minutes. Add chiles and garlic; EDGEWOOD cook, stirring, for 30 seconds. Add the quinoa and broth; bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to maintain a gentle simmer, cover and cook until the quinoa is tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed, 20 to 25 minutes. 3. Add pepitas, cilantro, scallions, lime juice and salt to the quinoa; mix gently and fluff with a fork. 4. Notes: Quinoa, a delicately flavored grain that was a staple in the ancient Incas' diet, is available in most natural-foods stores and the natural-foods sections of many supermarkets. Toasting the grain before cooking enhances the flavor, and rinsing removes any residue of saponin, quinoa's natural, bitter protective coating. 5. Hulled pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, are dusky green and have a delicate nutty flavor. They can be found in the health-food or bulk sections of many supermarkets. 6. To toast nuts & seeds on the stovetop: Toast in a small dry skillet over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until fragrant and lightly browned, 3 to 5 minutes. 4 PAGE 4 EDGEWOOD LET S TALK ABOUT TOADS BUFO TOADS Rainy season is HERE - BUFO TOADS are back in full force. During the cooler weather, they hibernate, but when rain hits, they abound. They were imported from South America (not sure why or how ). These critters have no known predators except man. They feed on dog feces, road kill, dead things, garbage, and absolutely everything they can gain access to. They grow to humongous proportions and if licked, can kill your dog or cat in minutes. They camouflage themselves to look like what they are sitting next to; a dish of cat food, a pile of feces. They are not to be confused with tree frogs with suction cups on their feet. You may be a whiz at poop control in your own yard, but if your neighbor doesn t clean up after her pets, the toads will be in your yard because of the food source in theirs. Feel free to copy this article and stick it in your neighbor s mailbox. Many dogs will go to great lengths to uncover a Bufo or hunt one down. And when they do they will ultimately touch the toad with their mouth and be exposed to a near fatal secretion. The dog will start foaming at the mouth and depending on how much of this secretion they have ingested, could die. Untreated, your pet will have seizures and die. IMMEDIATELY grab a hose, and gently rinse the mouth ensuring that the water flows OUT and not down the throat. Use your finger and a cloth to additionally wipe the tongue, gums and teeth to remove any of the secretion. Rinse well. The dog no doubt will get a little peeved but better mad than dead. This is serious and your dog can die from the secretion, especially the smaller ones who are more susceptible because of their size. After all is said and done, it is not uncommon for a dog to salivate heavily. Watch the dog carefully and if in doubt, take the dog to your vet! Please know that Hollywood Animal Hospital, 2864 Hollywood Blvd. Hollywood, FL, on the SE corner of Hollywood Boulevard and I-95 is a 24-hour Trauma Center. Do whatever you have to do to remove them from your yard. You might think about keeping a squirt bottle with ammonia handy or a butterfly net to capture and relocate them. It does work and your pet s life might depend on it.
