Recently I was reading a story in an animal welfare magazine and came across the following statement: It is estimated 100,000 to 300,000 pets are brought in to U.S. animals shelters each year after their owners die or become debilitated. A sobering fact, isn t it? We certainly see several of these cases each year at LAHS. Many times family members and friends are trying to work through the loss of their loved one or making arrangements for them in a long-term care facility, so determining what to do with the person s pets can be overwhelming. They are forced to make decisions quickly and many times that means surrendering an animal to a shelter or rescue as there were no provisions made for their care. While some animals do very well with the new surroundings and find new homes quickly, others struggle significantly. We all love our pets and want them to be loved and cared for, so knowing that they would have to adjust to strangers and a new environment can be a painful thought. This is especially hard for older pets or ones with health problems as they can be very difficult to find adoptive homes for. We would all like to assume that we can count on our close friends or family members to take over our pet s care, but without any formal plan this typically isn t the case. Your family members may have health issues themselves, have pet restrictions where they live, other pets that would not do well with the newcomers or they do not have the financial means to provide for the animal. What can we do to ensure that our pet will be loved and receive the care he/she requires if something unexpected would happen to us? We need to be proactive, which means that we need to make formal arrangements specifically for pets. You will need to do some homework, some of the things you will need to do to get started: Determine who would be the best caregiver for your pet(s). Meet with the selected caregiver and go over your expectations to ensure that he/she is willing carry them out. Provide detailed information for temporary care for your pets if the caregiver is unable to get to your pets right away. Provide detailed information regarding the pet s veterinary history and provide your veterinary clinic with the name of the caregiver who will be authorized to make medical decisions for your pet. Back-ups. Have at least one other caregiver lined up in the event that your primary caregiver is unable to full-fill their responsibilities. Once you have this information in place, contact an attorney who will be able to create a formal agreement that will be enforceable and also provide guidance as to setting aside finances for the on-going care of the pet. There are some excellent resources on the internet to help you create your plan. One that I would like to pass on has a printable Pet Care Workbook that provides forms to complete to ensure that you have gathered all the necessary information needed to provide care for your pet in your absence. Simply go to website and select the Pet Care Workbook. You will be able to download or open and print the workbook free of charge. If you do not have access to the internet or a printer, please feel free to contact the shelter and we will gladly print one out for you! We never know what the future holds for us tomorrow, next week or next year plan ahead; your pets will thank you!

Fundraising Success. Art with a Heart... Thank you to all who attended our "Art with a Heart" fundraiser on Friday evening! The event raised over $1,200 for the animals! It was a wonderful evening filled with fine original art and collectable pieces, by some of the most world renowned artists. Attendees purchased a highly collectable one-of-kind Norman Rockwell original and Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso. Graciela Boulanger and other limited addition prints. Auctioneer Eric Steiner, with State of the Art Auctions, did a wonderful job the introduction and providing education/history for the pieces presented. Special thanks to our event sponsors; Anderson Funeral Home and Kensington State Bank, Elden's Foods and to those who donated auction items (100% proceeds went to LAHS); Leanne Larson (Cane Toad Studios), Carlos Creek Winery, Christin Klimek and Brian & Karen Larson (CWL Memories)! A Hypnotic Halloween... The Lakes Area Humane Society held it s 6th Annual Hypnotic Halloween fundraising event at the Forada Supper Club on October 24th. The festivities began with social hour, treats and a silent auction, with a large number of items donated by many generous local businesses and individuals! The highlight of the night was the hilarious hypnosis show provided by Randy Buker, with Dream Weaver Comedy Hypnosis Shows, and fellow hypnotist, Dr. Dan, Comedy of Hypnosis. The guests and participants has a fantastic time during the hypnosis show, which was entertaining from the beginning to the very end! Over $3000 was raised for the shelter! The LAHS wishes to extend a HUGE thank you to Randy Buker and Dr. Dan for the donation of their services and also to the Forada Supper Club for the donation of space for the event! We also would like to thank everyone who donated items, volunteered and attended to make this a successful fundraiser! 2

Letters From Home Ireland is doing wonderful! She had her last chemo treatment and all of her blood work and x-ray 's are clear, no cancer! She loves going on boat rides...too bad boat season is just about over. She has truly blessed our house, she is so sweet and cuddly. She is always full of energy and loves my shoes! ~Adopted by the Hildebrant Family **Special Note: Ireland is a very special girl, who came to the LAHS needing eye surgery and having a mammary tumor. The tumor was cancerous and other spots were discovered on her lungs as well. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to cover all of the costs of her surgeries, chemotherapy treatments and follow up. We can t thank each of you who donated enough! Tucker ~Adopted by Tori H. 4

Hello LAHS! I adopted Rios - whom I lovingly renamed Oliver. He absolutely loves his new home! He is so excited to be able to move around. Quite often he gets the zoomies! Oliver is very talkative! He knows what he wants and when he wants it. As you can see in the second picture he loves to cuddle - especially in the morning :) I don't think he has stopped purring since I let him out of the pet carrier! He is everything I wanted in a kitty! Thank you! ~ Adopted by Taylor M. ~ Kali Adopted by Shaun S. ~ Mila Adopted by the Jasmer Family 5

Pet Health. Keep Your Pets Safe and Healthy During the Holidays! Tinsel and Ribbons: Cats love to play with shiny tinsel and ribbon, but if swallowed, they can get tangled in their stomachs and make them very sick. Plants: Lots of families have poinsettias, holly, or mistletoe around the house for the holidays. Unfortunately for pets that enjoy indulging in greens, these plants are toxic. If eaten, call your veterinary clinic immediately. Table Scraps: It is very tempting to sneak some table scraps to pets during the holiday meal. When animals eat fatty foods, it can make their stomachs upset and even cause a condition called acute pancreatitis, which can be life threatening. Also, pets love turkey, chicken, and steak bones, but bones can splinter and puncture the digestive tract. Human Treats: Chocolate and some sugar-free mints and gum can make dogs and cats very sick. Even a small amount of chocolate, such as 1 cup of chocolate chips can be potentially fatal for a 20 pound dog. Cold Weather: With the holidays, there may be a lot of activity and distractions going on in your house. An indoor pet left outside for too long in the cold, without shelter, could be in danger. In addition, be sure that your pet s ID tags and information are current so that if found they can be returned quickly.
