Here at the Lakes Area Humane Society, an important part of our mission is to "promote responsible care and training for household pets through education and public awareness." Although a large emphasis is placed on educating adults who are pet owners, an equal amount of importance is placed on educating children. We believe that when you teach a child to be kind to animals, you help pave the way to a better future for all living beings. Animals benefit because the next generation has learned to treat them with respect and compassion, reducing instances of animal neglect, abandonment and cruelty. Children benefit because learning about compassion and empathy early in life builds moral character and gives them a sense of empowerment and responsibility. Unfortunately, not all children are taught to be kind to animals and there has been increasing recognition of the link between animal neglect and abuse to human neglect and abuse. In a study completed by the American Humane Association, it was found that individuals who abuse animals are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people, four times more likely to commit property crimes, and three times more likely to have a record for drug abuse or disorderly conduct than those who don't. Each year, the LAHS staff has the opportunity to educate 400 to 500 children from ages 3 to 17 through tours, presentations and school events. They learn what being a responsible pet owner really consists of, instilling respect, kindness and compassion for all animals. The children also learn about the important services that animal welfare organizations provide to communities and taught them to be an example to others. In this newsletter, we have the pleasure of sharing with you photos of children who are already demonstrating their compassion for animals and wish to make a difference for the animals in our community. Many of them did supply drives, made blankets and beds for the animals, raised funds, made up special adoption treat bags and volunteered time at the shelter. You will also see pictures of adults who have also provided donations of supplies and did fundraising drives for the shelter. These adults are perfect examples of how one can lead and teach their children and/or grandchildren by demonstrating their support! We applaud and thank these remarkable children and adults for all of their efforts! It is the children of today that will become the rescuers of tomorrow.lead by example and teach them to value and respect our animal friends and see what wonderful adults they will become! ~Author Unknown

2 Kids Making a Difference! These Melrose National Honor Society ladies, along with their instructor Stephan, volunteered their time and talents to help with some much needed maintenance at the shelter recently. They scraped and painted the storage shed and also sanded and painted our utility cart. The end results were fantastic! We can t thank them enough for lending a hand to help with these much needed painting projects and doing an amazing job! We can t these girls enough for going above and beyond to help LAHS and the animals cared for at the shelter! Each of these girl scout troops visited the shelter, toured the building, learned about the services we provide and spent time with the adoptive animals. Each troop each did special projects for the shelter, one did a supply drive, another make beds for the cats and the last did a fund drive raising $77 for the animals!
