1 The Pet Pulse Spring 2012 Dreams Do Come True! AAF Spay/Neuter Clinic Soon To Become A Reality As you probably already know through previous newsletters, the Animal Adoption Foundation has been in the process of trying to realize the dream of opening up a spay/neuter clinic. That dream is now quickly approaching a reality. Thanks to a grant from the Joanie Bernard Foundation, we are able to complete construction of the clinic. The grant in the amount of $55,000 will also make it possible to furnish the clinic with all of the necessary medical equipment and supplies needed to get surgeries underway. The grant is specific to working with the community to help reduce the cat overpopulation problem in our area. The AAF will be offering low-cost surgeries for cats and kittens to the public. The clinic is expected to be operational sometime this summer. We are very excited about this venture and look forward to making a difference in our community! New Venue, Familiar Faces, come together for a Big Night for the AAF! The 2012 edition of the Waggin Tails Charity Auction was nothing short of amazing. Over 370 animal lovers attended the event at Receptions in Fairfield. This was our first year at the new venue and everyone was impressed with the layout and the wonderful service. Christopher Guyson from the popular classic rock radio station 92.5 The Fox was once again our emcee with a special guest appearance by Bill The Segman Dennison from 700 WLW. Also present was Cincinnati Reds Community Fund Executive Director, Charlie Frank who got the crowd fired up when a signed, framed Scott Rolen All Star jersey went on the auction block. Several AAF dogs were on hand hamming it up, always ready for a photo op. At the end of the night, the generosity of all those who attended came shining through with a grand total of over $38,000 raised for the homeless pets that need it so badly. We want to thank all of you who took the time to come out to our event. We also want to thank all of you who volunteered many, many long hours to make the whole thing possible. 2 A Volunteer s Love is Never Done! A Follow Up To Jade s Story Many of you may remember reading about Jade in our last edition of the Pet Pulse. Her story, though sad, is also very inspiring for all of us involved in animal rescue. After a harrowing rescue effort last October, a sweet but very scared pup that came to be known as Jade, came to the AAF. Jade didn t trust anyone at first, preferring to hide under the chair in her room or cowering in her crate. It was days before we could even get Jade to go outside. She was truly a project in the making and thankfully our wonderful volunteers love such a challenge! Debbie with her new love Because Jade had never been properly socialized before coming to the shelter, we made it a point to make sure she received more attention than a shelter dog normally would. Volunteers would sit with her in her room, sometimes reading to her from a book or just as company for a dog who had never been loved before. One thing we did learn very quickly was that Jade loved to be around other dogs. Her canine companions seemed to bring her out of her shell some so we used that to our advantage. Jade is all smiles now! Join the Foster Roster! Are you interested in helping a pet like Jade? We are always looking for foster homes for the pets that come to the AAF that need socializing. The AAF will supply you with everything you need including food and any necessary medical treatment. If you would like to learn more about our Foster Program, please call us at PETS. Jade was introduced to our dog park but still shied away from our volunteers attempting to make contact but she loved to play with the other dogs. She would cling to them tightly and even engaged in play after awhile. The more time she spent with the dogs in the dog park, the more she started to trust the people working with her. Soon Jade became the focus of the I-Care team, a collection of volunteers dedicated to working with our shelter dogs on a regular basis. Heading up the team was volunteer Eileen Udry who was determined to change Jade s life for the better. The group would meet several times a week to work with Jade, making progress ever so slowly. Simple things such as learning to walk on a leash or riding in a car were attained with time and Jade was close to being ready to go to a home. One of the members of the I-Care team, Debbie Metcalf, developed a bond with Jade and Jade with her. When it was determined that Jade had made enough progress to leave the shelter for an overnight visit with Debbie, we could not have been more pleased. We knew that there was a good chance that Jade might regress and things wouldn t work out at the Metcalf residence but at least she was being given the chance and we couldn t ask for anything more than that considering the condition Jade was in when she came to the shelter almost five months earlier. We are happy to say that Jade s visit went well and Debbie decided to foster her to see where things would go and it wasn t very long at all when Debbie decided that Jade had to be a permanent part of the family. We re sure that Jade is very happy about her new home as she has six other dogs to play with full time now along with two cats and a parrot! 3 AAF Receives MP3 Player Soothing Music for Cats & Dogs! The Animal Adoption Foundation was pleased to be selected to receive an MP3 player from The Rescue Animal MP3 Project after applying for it in March. We are thrilled that all of the dog kennels, cat rooms, isolation rooms, and get acquainted rooms play this music daily, with the exception of a 12 hour break each night for them to sleep. The Rescue Animal MP3 Project donates, free-of-charge, calming music for animals in rescues and shelters. The organization is a 501(c)3 non-profit founded by Pamela Fisher, DVM. The calming music for cats and dogs provided by various artists around the world is pre-recorded onto MP3 players that are donated to animal shelters that qualify. Randall Grandstaff, an AAF Board Member and volunteer, worked hard to install the speakers in all the rooms. The speakers were donated by an anonymous person that spent about $200 to purchase the kind we needed for our cat and various rooms from the AAF Wish List on Due to the kindness and generosity of many people, the dogs are barking less and the dogs and cats are calmer. This music is crucial to lowering stress levels and maintaining optimal physical and mental health. Thank you to all that have played a role in helping us make our pets even more adoptable while they await their forever homes. It is our mission to provide them with the highest quality of life as they stay here! Talawanda/Butler Tech High School Students Give Back! Faith Lowe, a student from the Talawanda/Butler Tech High School Life/Relationships class, contacted the Animal Adoption Foundation with the news that she and her classmates collectively raised more than $500 and a large amount of much needed supplies for the pets at the AAF! Faith invited an AAF staff member to visit Talawanda High School and meet the students. Talawanda/Butler Tech High School Students pictured with Lucky. Jennifer Karpanty, Assistant Director, visited Faith and her classmates in April The students presented Ms. Karpanty with a check and the supplies. Jennifer also brought Lucky, an AAF adoptable beagle, to visit the students and answer questions and talk about our mission. How did one class of young people raise so much money, you may ask? They had a bake sale and spent hours at the Kroger in Oxford selling their baked goods and passing out the AAF Wish List to customers. Katya Michael was the main contact and coordinator with Kroger for the bake sale. We want to thank this inspiring group of girls and their Instructor, Ms. Leslie Black, for giving back so generously to the community and for helping the cats and dogs at the shelter. These girls are an inspiration and example to all that with a lot of hard work and heart, there are no boundaries to the good that can be achieved. She loves to run and burrow her nose in it. She is such a happy dog she purrs. Wanted to share some pictures of Bentley. He is such a great dog, and we are so lucky to have him in our family! 6 BEST FRIENDS FUREVER! Many of our dedicated volunteers will recognize Tom (left) and Jeremy (right) pictured cuddling as they do best. The fantastic news is that this is a photo of them together in their new home! Tom and Jeremy have a lot in common. Both of them were abandoned and both made their way to the Animal Adoption Foundation years ago. Tom arrived in 2006 and Jeremy in They were sweet boys abandoned and without a home that found their way to the safety of the AAF. Tom met Jeremy in 2008 when Jeremy arrived. They grew close and formed an amazing bond. Tom and Jeremy! The staff and volunteers never really understood why these two boys kept being passed over for other cats. We all witnessed Tom grooming Jeremy. They both played and slept together, sat on the patio enclosure to watch birds and lay in the sunlight, and even shared meals together. Tom and Jeremy never seemed to feel sorry for themselves and were always grateful for attention. We made sure to work with them, especially during the Meow Mingle, so they would continue to be exposed to people and be sociable while they awaited their perfect home. Beth Vreelend stopped by the shelter in March 2012 ready for an adult cat to share her life with. Beth knew that kittens and younger cats are often adopted first and sought out one that really needed a home that she connected with. Beth found Jeremy and Jeremy found Beth! We were so happy for Jeremy and celebrated that, after close to four years at the shelter, he found a loving home. Much to our delight, Beth returned a few weeks later. Beth planned to adopt a second cat because she wanted Jeremy to have a friend. Beth wanted to know who Jeremy s favorite cats were. Wow! Could this really be happening? We introduced Beth to Tom and she immediately took a liking to him. She didn t even blink an eye knowing he was a bit older and adopted Tom that same day. We were so happy because it was clear that Tom had become somewhat depressed without his best friend. Beth changed all that. In Beth s own words: It s so cute watching them. They really do EVERYTHING together! I can tell Jeremy is loving having Tom with him again, and Tom seems as happy as can be. I love watching them together. They are so sweet. 7 The Kitten Whisperer One dogs passion for helping kittens in need By: Jill Binzer The call to animal rescue descended not only upon the director of AAF, but extended its powerful reach to his canine companion, Alley, as well! Yes, there s a real life canine kitten whisperer in our AAF midst. I had the great opportunity to chat with Alley and find out what makes her inner kitten purr. Alley s first kitten rescue took place in Alley took a walk in the woods at the old shelter location in Okeana and found two 5-week old motherless kittens. Alley carried each kitten in her mouth all the way to the shelter s front door to the humans inside! Since this first rescue, Alley has rescued over 10 kittens, including two recently who were dropped at the shelter in an unmarked box that would otherwise have been thrown into the dumpster. Alley s story is best told in her own words, so we ll let the kitten whisperer share her story Jill: Alley, why do you rescue kittens? Alley: I rescue them because I love them! And if I didn t something bad would happen to them. Jill: Were you trained to rescue kittens, or did it come naturally to you? Alley: Everything I do comes naturally. Nobody had to teach me how to sit or beg for food I learned all of that stuff while living on the streets before my daddy found me. I guess you could say that I m a self-taught natural. Jill: Do you locate the kittens by smell or do you hear them, or both? Alley: I usually smell them. I don t usually hear them until I am trying to gently put them into my mouth to carry them to safety.then I REALLY hear from them! How can such a tiny creature make so much noise???? Jill: Are the kittens initially afraid of you? Alley: Some kittens don t mind me at all when they first meet me, but some are very afraid. One time I was trying to rescue a kitten from behind a pop machine, and when I finally fished it out, it latched onto my muzzle with its claws and wouldn t let go! I don t think that kitten liked me very much, but at least he got a good home better than a pop machine for sure! Jill: Where do you typically find the kittens? Alley: Most of the kittens I have found have been in the woods. After I find them, my daddy goes looking for other kittens or signs of a mama cat. I ve found kittens inside soda pop machines and in boxes left by dumpsters. Jill: What happens to the kittens after you rescue them? Alley: After I take the kittens to AAF, the good people there take them to the kitten doctor to make sure they re healthy, and then the kittens go into the kitten room at the shelter where they get to run and play with other kittens until they get adopted. Jill: Do the kittens meow thanks to you? Alley: Is that what they re saying? I always thought they were saying Mama. Jill: What do you say to people who tell you that since you re a dog, you re supposed to hate cats? Alley: I m an oxymoron. Jill: Are you aware of your canine counterpart, Ginny the dog who rescues kittens in New York City? She has her own fan club and she wrote a book! Alley: I ve heard of her. We re actually friends on Facebook. As you can see, Alley Johnson is truly a canine hero in our midst. Next time you see Alley at the shelter, make sure you give her a pat on the head and a treat to thank her for her kitten-saving endeavors. She is a priceless partner in our rescue efforts. In today s busy world, it is often a challenge just to get daily chores completed let alone trying to determine how you can help your favorite charity. Donating has never been so easy! The Animal Adoption Foundation now has a wish list on Amazon.com for those that prefer to shop on line. You can access the wish list by going to our website or to and searching for the Animal Adoption Foundation Wish List. Just access our AAF Wish List and add items to your shopping cart and place the order (most orders over $25 have no shipping fee) and your items will ship directly to the shelter. No donation is too great or small. Kroger is offering a new Kroger Rewards program called Kroger Community Rewards. This program replaces the current Kroger "gift" cards that you may have purchased from the AAF. If you have one of the old cards, you can still use it to purchase items at any Kroger store but after May 1st, the AAF will no longer benefit from those cards. You CAN still help the AAF by going to and enrolling in the new program. It s quick and easy and all you need is a Kroger Plus Shopper's Card to get started. 10 We Will Miss You Sampson! Shelter loses a dear friend. Anyone visiting the shelter over the last couple of years is sure to remember our beloved hound named Sampson. While he had his quirks, Sampson was adored by our volunteers. Sampson was originally adopted from the AAF when he was just a six week old puppy. Several years later, he had been found running loose by a good Samaritan who brought Sampson to the AAF, not knowing that he had originally came from our shelter. We later found that the people who had adopted Sampson had moved to Michigan and left the poor dog behind to fend for himself. That was January of 2010 when Sampson found himself back at the AAF. Volunteer Eileen Udry quickly took Sampson under her wing, working on getting Sampson used to being around so many different people and other dogs. She and her different groups like Must-Love-Mutts and I-Care worked extensively with Sampson. He made many doggie friends, often romping around in the dog park. Sampson also went on many a field trip with volunteers, sometimes staying the night with his best friend Chandler (recently adopted and now Goose). On the morning of April 16th, Sampson didn t seem like his normal, energetic self. We took him to the veterinarian that day thinking that Sampson just had a belly ache but unfortunately it was much worse than that. Sampson passed away that night from a condition called peritonitis. We know that Sampson is somewhere looking down on us as he bounds endlessly in the fields of tall grass and eating his favorite food cheeseburgers. We will all miss you Sampson! Got Litter? As you know, the AAF relies on donations in order to operate on a daily basis. One of the items that we need most is cat litter. It doesn t have to be the expensive stuff...the cheap clay litter works best. Believe it or not, the shelter goes through about 960 lbs. of litter each and every week. You can easily purchase litter for the shelter online by going to our website and clicking on the Amazon.com link, or if you happen to be picking up a few items at the store, don t forget to grab a bag of litter. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter 24 hours a day. If we are closed, you can simply leave any donations on the donation cart located in front of the building. 11 Facebook Fodder A true sign of the times. More people are communicating through Facebook than ever before and if you haven t already joined the AAF Facebook page, we encourage you to do so. Many of our volunteers, adoptive families and visitors have joined us and here are just a few of the many nice things they have posted about the AAF Hillary A Foore Heaston It is SO hard to find the "perfect pet" you have to give and take. So in 2003 we decided to go out with no "perfect pet" expectations...we found Murphy at AAF. Turns out he was so far past perfect that we never could've even imagined. Unfortunately, we lost him early in Again, we thought we were ready and went to AAF with no expectations and also the understanding that there is no dog in this world that could ever compare to our Murphy dog. We found Peanut (who is now Dexter), we have had him for 24 hours and he has already reached Murphy status. Well, maybe a notch below since he ate one of my flips flops, but I have 100 pairs, so who cares?! Is it possible to find the perfect pet twice???? I didn't think so. But, for the first time in my entire life, I was wrong. AAF is AMAZING. The work they do with their animals to get them home ready is way above and beyond anything expected. Thank you AAF for giving my family the two best friends a person could ever ask for!!! I know Murphy is smiling down knowing that our love is now helping another dog. Victoria Picking Titus Schwab I visited AAF for about a year while I was grieving the loss of my beloved Tortie kitten, Chessie. Eventually I felt the time was right and lo, and behold, there was "Glo" (now named Sofia)! She is a joy to me every single day and has been a most welcome addition to the kitty "herd". Lauren Cripe We recently adopted a sweet little cat from Animal Adoption foundation. It was an easy process and we were impressed with the friendly staff, clean facility, and of course the cute cats! Move To Act This is a great organization with outstanding enrichment for the animals within its care. You can't go wrong visiting this shelter for your next companion!! CHANNEL 9 NEWS POSITIVE COMMENTS!!! Laura Berger Cook I was one of the lucky ones that found AAF the shelter in this story. We adopted Dustin and Diesel from them about a year and a half ago. They had been at the shelter for a number of months, 2 six year old male dogs who had grown up together and they wanted to keep together. I was so utterly impressed by AAF and Eric and all that worked there. The shelter was amazingly clean and all of the animals seemed to be happy and healthy. Of course they all needed their forever homes. They should have told you about Chandler, a dog that if I recall correctly, had been there 5 years at that point. But, they did not give up on him, and I know from a recent post that Chandler ended up being adopted. Great shelter and they deserve the positive attention! Page 11

12 No-Kill shelters: Fact or fiction? By: Tanya O'Rourke, Posted: 05/23/12 on CHANNEL 9 NEWS We want to thank Channel 9 for taking the time to focus on the no-kill movement, particularly the AAF. Catch us on Pet Pals on Channel 9 News every third Saturday of the month at 8am. HAMILTON, Ohio - Lucky the dog is, well, Lucky. She was thrown from a moving car into the parking lot of the Animal Adoption Foundation. The animal shelter got the older dog medical attention and volunteers give her love and attention each and every day. That's why her name is Lucky, said Eric Johnson, executive director of the Animal Adoption Foundation in Hamilton, Ohio. She's lucky she was left here. A lot of other places, she may have been put to sleep or something along those lines. The Animal Adoption Foundation is part of a growing number of No-Kill shelters around the country. Here, dogs and cats will not be euthanized unless it s medically necessary. But even Johnson admits No-Kill doesn t always mean no kill. "It depends. It depends on your organization. Most no-kill shelters are true to their word. We are true to our word. The only time we ever have to euthanize a pet is because of medical reasons, Johnson said. This shelter is helping set an example for the country. A country that, depending on the state or sometimes the county, dogs and cats have varying chances of being euthanized. Wayne Pacelle is the director of The Humane Society of the United States. He says in the southern part of the country, more animals are euthanized than in northern states. "In states like New Hampshire, we're seeing very few dogs euthanized for space, said Pacelle. "But you go to Mississippi or Alabama or a number of other states and euthanasia rates are much, much higher. Pacelle says the problem is societal. Many people don't spay and neuter their pets, which leads to the overpopulation of shelters, and in some cases, animals being put down. "They're euthanizing 80 percent of the animals that come in because they are just flooded and overwhelmed with animals coming through the front door," Pacelle said. At the Animal Adoption Foundation, a network of sorts has formed. Shelters that must euthanize will call AAF when they are overwhelmed, asking if they have room, so that animals don't have to be put down. Two dogs were dropped off recently -- one of which was badly malnourished and the other was absolutely filthy. They are in quarantine and waiting to see the veterinarian. When they are healthy, they ll be ready for adoption and will not be killed. Their lives are saved because they are at the AAF. Meanwhile, Lucky the dog trots through the AAF center hallway like she owns the building. They hope she finds a home soon, but know, like her name implies, that she s lucky to be alive and lucky to be in their care. Eric Johnson says countless more animals could be saved as well. "If we keep preaching the no kill movement, eventually, we can get to a point where euthanasia isn't an option anymore," Johnson said. Kathryn Brucato, 9-year old AAF volunteer, sends this message...
