1 INHEEMSE VELDBOKTELERSGENOOTSKAP INDIGENOUS VELD GOAT BREEDERS SOCIETY Nuusbrief / Newsletter April 2018 April Ledegeld Die ledegelde vir 2018 is dieselfde as vir 2017 en beloop slegs R per bestaande lid. Die totale koste vir nuwe lede beloop R , wat n eenmalige registrasiefooi van R insluit Member fees The membership fees for 2018 are the same as for 2017, being R per existing member. The total cost for new members amounts to R , which includes a once-off R registration fee. 7 April 2018 KZN IVG Club Farm Day Empangeni The Club enjoyed their visit to OSCA! The presentations were all really pertinent and all followed the same thread, which was great. This farm visit/farmers day was a big step in the right direction for a united goat industry in KZN in so far as we had representation and presentations from members of the Department of Agriculture (Francois Du Toit), the Veterinery Department (Dr Jana Kruger), the NGO's Goat Agribusiness And Community Animal Health Worker Project, HPSA Southern Africa, MDUKATSHANI Rural Development Project (Ruari Alcock and Marisia Geraci), along with IVG (both SA and the KZN IVG Club). We therefore would like to thank all of the peole listed above, along with Mzo Makhanya, Pieter Du Plessis, Falcon Sanders, Jabulani and the rest of the OCSA staff, as well as all the people who attended for a really good day. 1

7 IVG Ekotipes / Eco-types Noord-Kaap Skilder ekotipe / Northern Cape Speckled eco-type Die Skilderbok kom oorspronklik van die droë Noord- Kaap en Karoo areas, en strek van Sutherland tot Upington. Barrow (1801) skryf dat hy naby die Hartbeesrivier in die Noord-Kaap n groep Namakwa Hottentotte (Khoisan) teëgekom het wat n trop mooi bokke besit het, wat gemerk was soos n luiperd. Die Skilderbok is saam met pionier-boere, in die vorige eeu, rondom die Eerste Wêreldoorlog en die Dorslandtrek, na Namibië. Hier het n paar Namibiese boere hierdie bokke bewaar en suiwer gehou. Oor tyd het telers in Suid Afrika Skilderbokke by hierdie boere gekoop, en so hierdie bokke teruggebring na verskillende dele in Suid Afrika. Kenmerkende Karaktereienskappe: Hierdie groep is n grootraam bok, goed gespierd, met groot hangore ( lob ears ). Die kop is langerig met n effens konvekse (bolvormige) tot plat profiel. Die gesig neig tot n konvekse neusbrug, met n effense dip of knik net voor die oë. Die bek is hoofsaaklik donker gepigmenteerd. Die ore is groot en hang ( lob ears ), en neig tot n meer a-simmetriese vorm. Horings kom voor by beide geslagte, en is by volwasse diere min of meer die lengte van die skedel. Natuurlike horinglose diere kom soms voor, maar is baie skaars. By ooie groei die horings opwaarts en draai uitwaarts, met die puntjies wat weer inkrul wat dit amper n springbok voorkoms gee. By ramme groei die horing ook opwaarts (by party effentjies agteroor), en draai dan uitwaarts, maar is groter en swaarder as by ooie. Belletjies kom by sommige bokke voor. Baarde kom by die ramme voor, en by n klein persentasie van ooie. Ramme se baarde is groterig. Ooie se nekke is slank en goed aangeheg by die skouers. Ramme het dikker, goed gespierde nekke en skouers, wat soms met langer hare bedek is. The Speckled Goat has its origin in the dry Northern Cape and Karoo area, stretching from Sutherland to Upington. Barrow (1801) wrote that he encountered some "Namaqua Hottentots (Khoisan) who possessed a herd of small handsome goats that were spotted like the leopard", near the Hartbees river in the Northern Cape The Speckled Goat went with pioneer farmers to Namibia, around World War 1 and the "Dorslandtrek" during the previous century. Here some Namibian farmers preserved them and kept them pure. Over time breeders in South Africa bought Speckled Goats from these farmers, and brought them back to various parts of South Africa. Distinctive Characteristics: This is a large frame goat, rather well-muscled, with large drooping lob ears. The head is rather long with a profile that is flat or slightly convex (bulging). The face is inclined to have a slightly convex nose bridge, with a slight dip in front of the eyes. The muzzle is predominantly darkly pigmented. The ears are large and droopy (lob ears), and inclined to a more a-symmetrical shape. Horns are present in both sexes, and are more or less the length of the skull in mature animals. Naturally polled animals do occur rarely. Female horns grow upwards and curve outwards, with the tips inclining to tilt inwards again almost giving it a springbuck appearance. In males the horns also grow upwards, (some slightly backwards), and then curve outwards, but are bigger and heavier than in females. Toggles (wattles) are present in some goats. Beards are present in males, and a small percentage of females. Male beards tend to be large. The neck is slender in females and well attached to the shoulders. Males have thicker, well-muscled necks and shoulders, sometimes covered with longer hair. 7

The fore-arm is slender in the females and heavier in the males. The females have a finer bone structure in comparison to the heavier bone structure of the males. The group has good length and depth of body. The males and females are well-muscled on the inner and outer thighs. The group has a sloping rump. The tail is erect and of medium size. Hul bene is sterk en medium tot lank. hoofsaaklik donker van kleur. Hoewe is Legs are strong, and medium to long. predominantly dark in colour. Hooves are Die Skilderbok se hele lyf is wit met rooi, rooi-bruin of swart spikkels. Die konsentrasie van spikkels kan varieer van min tot baie. Die kop en bene is amper n soliede kleur, en die meerderheid het n wit bles op die voorkop. Hulle het n donker streep op die rug, en aan die voorkant van die nek en bors. Skilderbokke het uitstekende pigment met goeie kleur op die blootgestelde dele van die liggaam (bek, oë, ore, op die rug, onderbene, en voorkant van die nek & bors). Noord-Kaap Skilderbokke van suiwer bloedlyne teel getrou aan hierdie kleurpatroon, alhoewel hierdie n resessiewe geen is gevolglik sal kruising die kleurpatroon verander. Meeste bokke het n kort, glansende haarkleed en is geneig om kasjmier in die koue winters te groei. Hulle kan hitte en sonlig baie goed hanteer. The Speckled Goat's whole body is white with red, redbrown or black spots. The concentration of spots can vary from slight to heavy. The head and legs are an almost solid colour, and the majority has a white blaze on the forehead. They have a dark strip on top of the back, and on the front of the neck and chest. Speckled Goats have excellent pigmentation with good colouration on the most vulnerable parts of the body (muzzle, eyes, ears, top of the back, lower legs, front of the neck & chest). Northern Cape Speckled Goats of pure bloodlines breed true to this colour pattern, although this is a recessive gene consequently, crossbreeding will change the colour pattern. Most goats have short glossy hair, and are inclined to grow cashmere in cold winters. They are highly heat and sunlight tolerant. 8
