1. Dr Chris Kingsley het ons ingelig oor- Hand-rearing and Incubation for the Advance Breeder: This presentation did cover aspects related to incubation and handrearing, focusing on successful techniques and offering solutions to common problems faced by breeders each year. The basis for the presentation was field work whereby the crop contents of chicks being reared by their parents by their parents were analyzed, as well as the yearly experience in the rearing of hundreds of chicks of more than 40 species and historical data accumulated over 40 years as an aviculturist. The objective is to offer simple solutions to common problems to make the collection much more productive. The techniques to be described include injecting an egg that is cracked, dented or has lost albumen with antibiotics to significantly increase the chances of it successfully hatching. This same technique can be used in those pairs whose eggs traditionally perish during incubation. The use of papaya seed to assist in crop stasis will provide an important solution to a problem that plagues many breeders. Some common illnesses and solutions will also be discussed. The importance of fat in the hand-rearing formula will be highlighted, as early rearing can affect sexual maturity and successful reproduction. Many more important points will be shared during the presentation, which did richly illustrated to convey the points. b: 40 Years as Aviculturist: NOTIFIABLE DISEASES OF BIRDS. Very short extract below. a. ORNITHOSIS. This disease which is caused by a gram negative, intracellular bacterium known as Chlamydophilapsittaci. There are 5 different types of this organism. The different types are called serovars, A to E. Serovar A most frequently effects psittacines and is generally considered highly pathogenic. Serovar E effects pigeons and doves. Other names used for the disease caused by this bacterium include, Psittacosis, Parrot fever, One-eyed cold and Chlamydiosis. b. AVIAN INFLUENZA. This disease is caused by an influenza A virus. The primary hosts of this virus are the waterfowl, with gallinaceous birds also being highly susceptible. This virus is extremely unlikely to infect members of the order Psittaformes. Why then all the fuss? c. NEWCASTLE DISEASE. Newcastle disease results from an infection of Paramyxovirus Like with Avian Influenza virus, there are numerous strains of Paramyxovirus.Depending on how virulent the strain, and how likely the virus is to cause mortality, the strain is classified as velogenic, most virulent, mesogenic, less virulent or lentogenic strain, which is the least pathogenic. Other Paramyxoviruses are adapted specifically for certain species of birds. A strain of Paramyxovirus 3 causes disease in grass parakeets, while a pigeon adapted strain of Paramyxovirus 1 is responsible for a very significant problem in the racing pigeon industry. c: This presentation did discuss his involvement in aviculture and touched on key research conducted during more than four decades. This includes inbreeding studies to quantify the results of sibling pairingsin the long term. This study was conducted because many species have small captive populations and inbreeding depression has long been believed to be detrimental to their survival. The findings suggest that many species pass through the bottle neck and then become much more productive, maturing earlier and display high fertility. The age in which sexual maturity is attained and when a species becomes unproductive is also highlighted. The presentation did discuss his involvement with the Spix s Macaws Cyanopsitta spixii, his observations of some unique breeding habits of wild parrots and where he believe aviculture is headed. This presentation was rich with information. 2. Tony Silva is an American ornithologist and aviculturist, born 1960 in Cuba and the author of books and articles about parrots. From April 1989 until early 1992 he was the curator of birds at Loro Parque, Tenerife, Canary Islands, the largest parrot park in the world. He was involved in the early efforts to save the Spix s macaw and the first to breed them in captivity at Loro Parque. a. Hand-rearing and Incubation for the Advance Breeder: FOCUS - pg 4

Albei is herkiesbaar. Ringnek voëls as troeteldiere is onwettig. The following decision was made during the AGM on 9 September 2-17 during the symposium: The terms of Ben Minnaar and Piet Jacobs as EXCOM members expire. Both are eligible for re- election. Every breeder of African Greys who may export will contribute to a government controlled fund. A clearance certificate will be issued to all ringneck breeders who are members of PASA if their aviaries are up to standard. This clearance certificate will only be valid for paid-up members. A report must be handed in yearly in May on numbers bred, sold, died or flown away. It is illegal to keep ringnecks as pets. The Focus will be placed on PASA webpage, a lot of costs will be saved through this, the advantage is that it will still be available after many years. There will be no increase in membership fees for Plans must be made to upgrade ring machine for Suzette. Non-commercial registration of Cites I parrots: Most of the problems we encountered with the process of noncommercial registration have been solved. DEA have also lodged a 2 3 day program in the provinces to train the officials concerned and this had a beneficial effect. Service delivery is however still a problem in the provinces. All provinces have vacant posts that are nor filled and exotic parrots are not a priority. The first priority of nature conservation is the management and protection of our indigenous species. Adding to this the officials have no experience in the parrot industry and little knowledge of the species. Please have patients when an official inspects your breeding facility and assist them as far as possible with the inspection. In spite of what was said above applications are now processed and registered and certificates are issued. This as a result of constant pressure from PASA. The following can be mentioned: Provinces that issued wrong certificates now corrected same Applications that went missing were found KZN wildlife started inspections Any applications that have not been processed after it was lodged can still be forwarded to Antonie to follow up. Kindly inform him immediately if the problem was solved. The best way to expedite the process is to provide Antonie with the following information: your name, breeders code and the date and place your application was lodged. This applies to commercial and non-commercial applications. Remember that the African Grey application form is not loaded onto the non-commercial form. You must complete the African Grey stock list form and attach same to your non-commercial application. It is important to note the following in regard to the non-commercial applications: The A-, B-, and C-lists expire at the end of September You application must be lodged within the next month! After September new applications for registration of Cites I facilities will have to proof legal origin by submitting proof as required on the C-list or the birds must originate from a registered breeder in South Africa. FOCUS - pg 6

Ons is nou halfpad, African Greys het 11 Maande gelede CITES I geword, hoe vêr trek jou aansoek? Commercial registration of African Greys with CITEs in Switzerland: The initial registrations went without hiccups. There are currently 16 registration numbers allocated by the Cites Secretariat and another 7 numbers should be allocated in September. Another 9 applications are on the table at Cites for consideration. If all goes well South Africa should have about 32 registered breeders of African Greys by the end of the year representing about African Greys. We have only submitted a small percentage of the applications. According to our records there are about 200 applications that are being prepared and many more have not started the process. The CITES secretariat and our own DEA now apply more strict measures and our applications are now also submitted to the Scientific Authority for approval. Al applications must therefore be thoroughly prepared before it is submitted. If there are queries the application is delayed for months as the queries are only channeled through the official channels to the applicant. There are currently 25 applications that are being delayed as a result of queries. Most of these applicants have not received the detail of the delay from the provinces. SANBI is also now a delay as a result of queries in regard to open rings on F1 birds. They must now consider what they expect from applications that do not breed F2 and have open ring F1 parrots. We are attending to the problem. In the meantime, applicants that bred F2 from closed rung F1,may submit their applications at their nearest nature conservation office. It is important to submit a record or photos of the breeding records to prove that you have bred F2 babies. These records must have the following detail: The aviary numbers Ring numbers of the breeding pair. Date of the clutch Number of babies and ring numbers (F2 babies do not have to be in your possession and may have been sold, they may therefore not be on your stock list) The F2 requirement therefore do not mean that you must have F2 on your stock list but only that you have bred F2 babies. Applicants that have nor bred F2 must kindly hold the applications back until October so that we may advise you what the requirements are. Contrary to our belief registration in Switzerland is now more difficult. There is also a time restraint on the current system of approval that lapses I September Applications that have not been submitted 90 days before then will be problematic. At the present rate of consideration your application MUST BE SUBMITTED BEFORE THE END OF There are only 14 months left to submit your application. How far are you with your application? 11 Five rules for breeding success: By Tony Silva One question that I receive on a continuous basis is the following: Can you provide some tips to get my pair to breed? I invariably respond that there is no magic elixir that induces breeding because it is the cumulative effect of number of separate but linked steps. If you take one of these steps from the equation, success becomes elusive or failure ensues. These steps are as follows: 1) Obtaining a healthy pair of birds. I always recommend having the birds examined by a veterinarian or at least culturing them; a choanal swab is preferred to a cloacal swab, with a swab from a dropping on the floor being regarded as the least effective because the risk of contamination is too great; a culture reading from a dropping collected from the cage floor is likely to provide wrong data. When I recommend that the new birds be cultured, the response is often that there is no experienced avian veterinarian. One does not need an avian veterinarian to culture a swab and if some pathogen grows to carry out sensitivities, which identify the proper drug(s) to use. Any veterinarian with a laboratory can carry out this simple testing procedure. External appearance of the birds is not indicative that internally they are healthy. I have seen ostensibly good-looking birds die weeks later from aspergillosis or Chlamydia. Treating them with a combination of drugs is no guarantee that they will be cleared of any bacterial agent they may have, as the pathogen may be resistive to the drug being used. This is why culturing with the necessary sensitivity is important. The sensitivity test will indicate the drugs most effective for treating whatever pathogen may be present. Prophylactically treating the birds with antibiotics taken from the shelf is poor management at its best and playing Russian roulette at its worst. This can create bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, which may truly be needed if an emergency arises, can contribute to fungal infections and may destroy the gut flora. Birds should only be medicated when truly necessary and never on a set calendar. It is important to start out with truly healthy birds because ill birds will not breed. 2) Insure that the pair is eating the proper diet and that it is balanced. Nothing infuriates me more than being contacted by an individuals who calls himself or herself an aviculturist, who has acquired an expensive pair of birds and then wants to feed them only sunflower seeds and apples. The birds will mirror what you feed them. If the diet is poor, expect poor results. Many that feed a poor diet often argue that the birds will not eat anything other than what they are offered. You can tell this story to some naïve individuals but not me. In over four decades of breeding parrots I have yet to find one bird that cannot be coaxed into eating a good, balanced diet. That diet should be rich in vegetables and contain a small amount of fruits. Items like cucumber, watermelon and lettuce are not on the list. They are merely full of water or in the case of the watermelon sugar that is not healthy. Lories will not thrive on seeds or sugar water with white bread added. They need a special diet, which requires daily effort to produce. This diet needs to contain a low iron level and no citrus, which increases the uptake of deadly iron. Eclectus require a large amount of vegetables in their diet. Macaws and African Greys Psittacus erithacus need fat in their diet. Adding this fat can be expensive. Research the species that you plan on keeping and understand its dietary requirements. Only then can you truly judge if you are capable of meeting this need. 3) House the pair under conditions that will induce them to breed. This may require an understanding of the biology of the species. African Greys Psittacus erithacus like tranquility and are not likely to breed when housed with noisy conures, cockatoos or macaws. Most conures are highly sociable and do best when housed collaterally with other pairs. The same applies to Caiques. They are highly sociable bird that seem to display a domino effect when several pairs are housed within sight and sound of each other: as one pair begins to breed, the others are induced to do the same. Macaws can develop allergic reactions to the powder downs of cockatoos, so should not be housed next to these. Amazons should see each other outside the breeding season but when nesting the males may become so hormonally charged by an equally energized neighbor that he may vent his anger on his mate. Blocking each other s view when nesting is important to prevent attacks on mates. One good rule is to try and house similar species together: African parrots in the same area, macaws in another, conures as a group and amazons in cages that can have visual barriers added or removed to induce breeding. Lories should be housed together to simplify the heavy cleaning that they require on account of their liquid diet. By housing similar groups together, one increases the likelihood of success as the pairs are stimulated by courtship and mating sounds that they recognize. Wooden floor cages are impossible to keep clean. This build up of bacteria will eventually cause illness. The best cage floor is a wire mesh, which allows spilled food and droppings to pass out of reach. For those breeders that use the standard walk in aviaries, the floor should be of an easily cleaned surface such as polished cement or tile. A drain in each cage is recommended to facilitate washing the floor regularly. Double cage wire is also important to prevent an adjacent pair from biting toes or crushing a neighbor s mandible in a fight. 4) Provide the proper nest. The nest is an important element in breeding. If you provide the wrong nest to a pair that is very healthy and fed a good diet success may still be elusive. Understand that certain species have special nesting box requirements. Take also into account the behavior of the pair. A fractious pair of African Greys may accept a standard vertical nest but when frightened they will dive into the nest, crushing the eggs. This is why either a horizontal nest or an L-shaped nest is recommended for this popular species. Macaws tend to overheat easily as they grow. They do best with a horizontal box which allows the growing young to spread out. Species likely to break their eggs (Galahs Eolophus roseicapillus, Blue-throated Conures Pyrrhura cruentata, etc) should be offered a narrow and very deep nest, as the darkness and tight fit seems to discourage egg breakage. Cockatiels Nymphicus hollandicus, Budgerigars Melopsittacus undulatus and lovebirds (Agapornis sp.) should be offered a wooden nest and not a pot, which tends to become a fetid pool unless cleaned every few days. This accumulation of feces engenders disease. In the wild, a pair first selects a nesting cavity and then they must prepare it. Nature does not provide a readymade cavity. This means that the pair must find, defend and then make the cavity suitable. This activity strengthens the pair bond and induces gonadal development. In my collection I never provide shavings but rather fill the nest with chunks of soft or decomposing wood, which the pair must chew apart to access the nest. FOCUS pg 11

12 They can discard what they do not require. I have more than once acquired pairs that produced clear eggs for another breeder. On simply being given the proper nest and filling it with wood the pair nested and produced fertile eggs. The darkness of the nest, the time required inside and the cooperative attitude the pair must display to prepare nest were the factors that contributed to success. 5) House the pair accordingly. I hate seeing cockatoos housed in small cages, as this increases the likelihood of the male killing the female. Macaws need room to display to open their wings and charge their keeper as they protect the nest. Housing them in a cage where a pair can barely move is cruel. Amazons need space in order to deter obesity, which is a problem in many of the species. The space also allows the female to escape an overly charged male. Insure that the cage is sufficiently large to allow enrichment to be added. I do not buy arguments that if the birds are given natural enrichment or even toys that they will be distracted and not breed. My birds receive enrichment continuously and they breed. When the breeder understands and follows these steps, success will be achieved. Violating one of these steps may deter nesting or it may provide short-term success before the male kills the female, the female s body is sapped of its calcium or the birds die as a result of a poor diet. If you are serious about aviculture, provide the birds the conditions that they require to be healthy and happy. Sy voetspore sal almal by bly. We selute You. A mark of respect to Albert van Lingen: It is with grief that we have to bid farewell to Albert van Lingen, he truly was a dear and valued friend in all bird related occurrences. Albert passed away at the age of 62 years, after a short illness on Monday 23 October Albert was more than just a friend and colleague to many in the bird industry. His knowledge, support, loyalty and helpfulness will be remembered and missed by all. Albert was one of the founder members of Kalahari Voelklub and Suid Afrikaanse Lovebird Telersvereniging. He acted as chairman at both these clubs for many years. He also served as an Executive Committee member of PASA as well as APMTV. He will also be remembered for his great passion and knowledge of mutations in the bird industry. One of Alberts many passions, was conducting tours to Namibia with overseas breeders visiting South Africa. The footprints he left will not easily be equalled. We will certainly miss his opinions and dry sense of humour, but will we never forget it. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends in this difficult time. We Salute you Albert. Black Cap Lorys and CITES Black Cap Lorys Lorius lori have been successfully bred in South Africa for many years, to such an extent that a large number of them are exported every year. The 17th conference of CITES member states (CoP17), decided that the CITES Animals Committee must also monitor the international trade in captive bred animal species. Previously, only the wild caught trade was monitored thru a process known as the Review of Significant Trade in Appendix II species or RST. African Greys are a good example of a species that was under investigation through the RST-process before it was up-listed to CITES Appendix I. During the 29th meeting of the Animals Committee in July 2017(AC29) the exports of captive bred Back Cap Lorys from South Africa was identified as one of several possible candidates for a species country combination to investigate. At that point of the meeting, the World Parrot Trust made a statement that.lories are extremely difficult to keep alive in captivity!! The meeting then agreed that South Africa will be instructed to investigate the captive breeding of Black Cap Lorys here and report back at the next meeting (AC30 in July 2018). The instructions to South Africa include to establish how many breeding stock we have, how many chicks are bred per year and what husbandry methods are implemented by the breeders. According to the CITES trade data, the 1stexport of Black Cap Lorys from South Africa occurred before the 1st recorded import, so South Africa also have to determine if there were any of them here pre-convention (before 1975 when CITES came into force.) The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) approached PASA to do a survey among our members to count how many Back-Cap Lorys there are and requested that a couple of breeders invite them to visit and see how to breed Lorys. PASA is therefore calling on all members and non-members that keep Back-Cap Lorys to send the following information to Antonie Meiring antonie@netactive.co.za. How many Back-Cap Lorysof all the sub-species do you keep? How many chicks do you breed on average per year? Are you willing to invite Nature Conservation to come and see how you breed with Lories? Are you aware of any Back-Cap Lorys that were imported before 1986? Everybody that keep Back-Cap Lorys must urgently provide the above information to us. It can also be sent directly to you nearest Nature Conservation office if you prefer. If South Africa fail to report satisfactorily to AC30 about our breeding of Back-Cap Lorys, then the species can easily become the next target to up-list to CITES I or it could even lead to trade restrictions on South African bred parrots in general. Presensie: Teenwoordig: KOSH KALAHARI APTV VALKE ROSESTAD VERREWES DIAMANDVELD STELLELAND HOëVELD BOLAND OOS KAAP 4. Daar is gevra of daar enige veranderings moet wees, voordat dit as korrek aanvaar word. Voorstel: Stokkies Stokbroekx. Sekondant: Arno Hattingh. 5. 6.

Apologies: FANIE KLOPPER 3 Present: KOSH KALAHARI APTV ROSESTAD VERRE-WES DIAMANTVELD STELLALAND Hooved BOLAND OOS-KAAP VALKE 4 Approval of the Previous Meeting : Deon enquired whether all have read the minutes of the previous meeting. A few persons did not receive the minutes via and suggested that Lynette reads the minutes to all. It was also requested that anything should be changed before being accepted as correct. Proposer: Stokkies Stokbroekx Second: Arno Hattingh 5 Feedback from Clubs: Auctions ) All the auctions were a great success. 2) The auction of the previous of the previous year were highly successful. 3) The rule of discretion was well applied by the chairman of auctions and there were no deviations of rules 4) Two auctions applied principle of Catalogue lots. Verre-Wes had a Lutino Gala sold at a very good price and the buyer could fetch the bird at a later date agreed. APMTV mutation auction had similar lot which were Plumheads and fetched a SA record for the most expensive lot sold on an auction. The main reason for these catalogue lots is to not subject rare birds to stress on auctions. The rule for them is to be inspected by Auction Chairman prior to the auction, ring numbers and photos must be provided at the auction. Only a limited number of these lots must be accepted on an auction. 6. Problems arising from 2017 auctions: 1) Clubs having auctions are expected to attend these meetings. They are all members of PASA, and PASA acknowledge these clubs and it s paid up members 2) Catalogue lots: Treated as above. 3) Discretion rule: Kalahari Club suggests that this rule must be scrapped. After all inputs were received and voting took place it was decided to keep the rules under the following conditions: Only limited lots must be accepted It must be scares and expensive birds Birds must be accepted vet A report must be proved including ring numbers 4) Valke club will not offer an auction in 2018 under PASA rules. 7 Auction rules: Clubs who voted against the discretion rule did not display PASA rules in their catalogue, even though they applied the rule during selection process. 8 Correspondence: Kalahari Club suggested that the ring size of Hoodeds and Lineolateds to be altered. They will provide letter to the office to do necessary changes on list. 9 Regulations Ringnecks: Albert van Lingen undertakes to write an article on rules of ringnecks at auctions. 22 When should we medicate our birds? By Tony Silva As I travel the world, I see dramatic differences in husbandry protocols. In Europe there is a great adversity to using medications on parrots. In contrast, in Asia some believe that medication should be used as part of the husbandry, subjecting the birds to regular courses of medications. I disagree with both principals. Medications should never be abused, as they can cause far more problems than they are intended to solve. A sick bird, on the other hand, needs aggressive therapy in order to keep its health from deteriorating to the point that it will not recover. The question of when antibiotics and the concomitant antifungals should be used is in my opinion very clear: when they are actually needed and never prophylactically. Parrots are notorious for hiding an illness. They are in the main flocking animals. In the wild a sick bird in a flock attracts the attention of predators. This is why they hide their deteriorating health until it is usually too late. These birds then separate from the flock. In most cases they are taken by predators long before they succumb to the illness. In a captive environment, the sick bird will mask its illness, but a keen aviculturist will immediately notice a change in behavior: the bird will not be as active or vocal, may not descend to feed when fresh food is offered and may remain with feathers fluffed in a secure part of the aviary. The bird will also not play or preen. Such a bird will clearly need medication. Its illness makes it clinically ill. Parrots can also be subclinically ill. They may behave normally but their illness may cause them not to breed or may cause infertility, embryo loss and chick mortality. Chlamydia psittaci or parrot fever is a typical case in point. Some birds are subclinical. They appear healthy but are infected and display the illness only when stressed. This condition can cause infertility, early embryo death or even the death of the chick shortly after hatching. All parrots should be treated only based on an acute knowledge of medications and their application. You simply cannot buy an antimicrobial agent and treat the bird. Treatment should be based on empirical data what is the antibiotic that has worked best to address those illnesses that are most common in the collection or on culture results. In both cases an avian veterinarian should be consulted, though in areas where they are not available any veterinarian can culture a swab and identify the best antibiotic to use. The cultures identify the agent causing the illness and also the best antibiotic to be used for combatting that agent. This is pure science. With a parrot that can die in a few days from the onset of illness, guessing is a dangerous game. In a breeding collection, I recommend conducting spot physical exams when birds have to be caught for any reason. Look at the eyes, inside the mouth, the nare openings, the vent and the body. A bird that is thin and has mucous or a sour odor emanating from its mouth will need further review. It is likely suffering from bacterial and fungal infection. This bird will need to be examined by a veterinarian. Stained vent feathers may suggest an internal parasite infection, which will need treatment; parasites like disease can also stint breeding. Bird that fail to nest or consistently produce clear eggs, eggs that die during early incubation, or chicks which regularly die should be suspected of being subclinically ill. These birds should be examined in detail and the prerequisite cultures performed. I do not like to culture birds from droppings collected from the aviary floor, as these samples are probably contaminated. Rather I prefer to take a choanal swab; the choana is the slit in the roof of the mouth; it has rows of fine hairs that glow along the slit, these hairs becoming worn if there is a bacterial or fungal infection and are a good gauge as to the health status of a bird. The culture results will likely produce a pathogen and the sensitivities will reveal the best course of action. On being treated, these birds often become productive. When I provide consulting, this is the first area I examine. Often culturing and treating with the proper medication can make a collection go from producing virtually no young to being very productive. Pairs that were productive and suddenly stop nesting or commence producing infertile eggs should also be examined. Find that in almost all of these cases some low grade infection is involved. On being treated, the birds again breed successfully. I do not believe that the entire collection should be subjected to a yearly medical exam. This causes undue stress on the birds. Instead I believe that the birds should be examined when they are caught or if they are not breeding successfully. If a pair never nests and they have been given the proper conditions for breeding a good, balanced and nutritious diet, the proper nest, the correct photoperiod and more then I would also subject them to a physical exam and culture. By incorporating science and the aid of a veterinarian, the breeder can be far more successful. The additional young will more than compensate for the effort and expense of maintaining flock health.
