Our stud and flock have produced outstanding lamb crops and wool clips for the past 55 years. We breed animals for production and profit that are in balance with the environment. To achieve this, we are using phenotypic carcass evaluation that uses ultra-sound technology to scan live animals and produce an accurate index value through a developed formula. This highly successful system is interfaced with skilled appraisal of the animal. Whilst adhering to the requirements of the Dohne Merino Breed Society, we do not base our selection priorities on Performance Figures. We are not blinded by so-called REV s (Relative Economic Values). Instead we subscribe to the Genetics of Profitability.

4 DOHNE MERINO BREED SOCIETY OF SA The business of the members of the Society is to breed rams. But not just any rams we breed sheep which are capable of increasing the productivity, and therefore the profitability of wooled sheep flocks in South Africa. Dohne Merino breeders pay attention to cash value characteristics in their selection programmes. These include reproduction, lamb growth rate, maternal ability and Merino wool production. Not only do Dohne Merino breeders measure these essential characteristics in their sheep, thus doubling the accuracy of selection, but they also apply the most effective management techniques and breeding principles to ensure that improvement is both rapid and continuous. Dohne Merino breeders operate as a team. Team spirit, enthusiasm and dedication are features common to them all. These are the reasons for the success of the many projects undertaken by the society. They are also the reason for the phenomenal success of the Dohne Merino sheep. DOHNE MERINO TELERSGENOOTSKAP VAN S.A. Die taak van die Genootskap se lede is om ramme te teel, maar nie sommer einige ramme nie. Ons teel ramme wat instaat is om produktiwiteit te verhoog en dus die winsgewendheid van die wolskaap-kuddes in Suid Afrika. Dohnetelers skenk in die seleksieprogram aandag aan eienskappe met kontant waarde. Dit sluit in reproduksie, lamgroeitempo, moedereienskappe en Merino wolproduksie. Nie alleen meet Dohnetelers hierdie belangrike eienskappe van hulle skape wat die akkuratheid van seleksie verdubbel nie, maar hulle pas die mees doelstreffende teelbeginsels en bestuurstegnieke toe om te verseker dat die vordering vinning en deurlopend is. Dohneteles werk as n span. Spangees, entoesiasme en toewyding is kenmerkend van almal. Dit is die redes vir die sukses van vele projekte wat die Genootskap onderneem. Tel: Cell: falkirk1@xtra.co.nz Web: or DOHNE MERINO EBV s (Estimated Breeding Values) The EBV s of all Dohnes, both male and female, and from different years can be compared. This across flock evaluation is practiced by means of a multiple trait animal model. The EBV includes the animal s own performance plus that of its relatives (sire, dam, half-brothers and sisters etc.) The traits include Body Weight (BW), expressed in kgs and compared to the Breed s base of zero. Clean Fleece Weight (CFW) expressed in grams. Fibre Diameter (FD) expressed in microns. The lower the EBV, the finder the wool. A negative value EBV is indicated by a - (minus) sign while a positive value is shown without a + (plus) sign. EBV s are expressed at yearling age.

7 The vaccine used in South Africa for the control of ovine brucellosis is Rev 1, a live attenuated strain of Brucella mellitensis. One inoculation of sheep rams at weaning age provides lifelong immunity. This vaccination must not be repeated. If older rams (8 months +) were to be vaccinated they will test seropositive on the Complement Fixation (CFT) blood test routinely used. In very rare cases the vaccination of adult rams may result in them developing an epididymitis. Unfortunately there have been serious shortages with Rev 1 vaccine (OBP) during the past 12 months. Consequently a number of breeders could not vaccinate their breeding rams at weaning. The young rams offered for purchase at the 2018 Production Sale of Normandy Dohne Stud have not been vaccinated. I have consulted both Messrs Lionel and Jean de la Harpe since 1985 and have never established a positive case of ovine brucellosis in their sheep. To my best knowledge, this stud has maintained the highest levels of biosecurity. However, any buyer of rams from this sale may have serological examinations performed within 2 weeks of purchase if they so deem necessary. Dr. R.T. Larson (BVSc) 15 January 2018
