As usual, the homeowners have not let us down and once again, we have received many many letters, comments and ideas. Thank you all so much. Keep them coming we love hearing from everyone! Dit is baie teleurstellend om te hoor aangesien die doel van die nuusbrief is om huiseienaars gedurig op hoogte van Shelley Point sake te hou sowel as om n gevoel van gemeenskaplikheid te skep tussen dié van ons wat permanent hier woon sowel as vakansie besoekers. Die rede hoekom die nuusbrief nie totaal in Afrikaans is nie is tweevoudig. Eerstens, n redelike aantal van die huiseienaars is uitlanders wie nie Afrikaans kan lees of praat nie. Tweedens, my huistaal is Engels en alhoewel ek Afrikaans redelik goed kan lees en praat is dit nie van n gehalte wat ek as geskik sal ag om in te skryf nie. Nogtans, indien daar egter n leser is wie bereid sal wees om die nuusbrief elke maand te vertaal, kontak my asseblief. Dan kan ons dit oorweeg om n heeltemal tweetalige brief te sirkuleer. Stel iemand belang? I will be away in Alaska during the month of June but, fortunately, Yvonne Collett has kindly agreed to assist me with compiling, editing and formatting the July edition in my absence. So hopefully, it will be business as usual for the next issue but it may be a little shorter than normal. Due to space limitations, they cannot all be published but each month we will attempt to highlight a few of them. Graham has raised the issue of homeowners who regularly walk their dogs on the beach but do not carry plastic bags to pick up their poop. He has requested that the trustees look into this issue and possibly erect signage on the boardwalks asking dog owners to remove any smelly parcels left behind on the beach. 1

2 Rion has asked residents and other interested parties to help support a cause that he feels strongly about, namely the protection of South Africa's new marine parks. To show your support, please sign the petition on the link below support-sas-mpas A very worthy cause indeed, Rion. I have no doubt that many of our homeowners will be very willing to show their support. Baie dankie aan Val Dick vir die artikel oor die skenking aan Siyabonga deur die Lionsklub van Antwerpen in België. Leendert Van't Hof is 'n huiseienaar wie elke jaar hier kom vakansie hou. Hy reël al vir jare donasies aan Siyabonga maar die R300,000 donasie hierdie jaar is die grootste ooit. 'n Aantal lede van die Atwerpen Lionsklub het die oorhandiging van die tjek op 7 April bygewoon. Val het vir my 'n uitknipsel van die artikel wat in die 14 April uitgawe van die Weslander verskyn het gestuur en indien iemand belangstel om die volle artikel oor die donasie te lees, kontak my asseblief en ek sal dit aanstuur. Met verwysing na die artikel in die Mei uitgawe se Natuurhoekie oor die swarttobie het Heine as volg geskryf: Baie dankie vir hierdie pragtige maandblad. Ek en my vrou Elsabe geniet dit baie. Op die strand voor die huis wat eers aan Pieter Vercuiel behoort het, broei twee tobies al vir n paar jaar en ons geniet dit om hulle dop te hou. Hulle het al n paar kleintjies daar uitgebroei. A NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN Here are a couple of items that the homeowners may find of interest The MTN staff are still working on the cellphone tower and about eighty percent of the project has been completed so far. The 2016 phase of the long-term road-resurfacing project has now been completed just in time for winter! We have received funds from the developer to complete the two proposed car parks. This project will commence shortly and we will soon be consulting any homeowners who may be affected by this. We have been experiencing many dog-related complaints over the past few months with regard to incessant barking as well as land-mines on the beach. Please be considerate towards others by controlling continual barking and cleaning up after your animals. While on the subject of dogs, homeowners are respectfully advised to take cognizance of the small size of properties at Shelley Point when acquiring a dog. Small properties and big dogs are not a good combination. Just for your information, the sandflea type bites that we have been experiencing at Shelley Point has been attributed to a very small white moth which nests in the shade of plants like the Port Jackson. They look like ash in the wind and are known to stick to washing which is hanging out to dry. So, look out for them! Paul van Ass 2

3 UPDATE FROM THE SHELLEY POINT BOARD OF TRUSTEES: No formal meetings of the Trustees have been held since the one reported on in the May Newsletter. The next scheduled meeting of the Board of Trustees will take place on Friday 1 st July A Community Forum will be held on Friday 24 th July to take issues from the community for discussion at the Board meeting. Please diarize. SECURITY REPORT: In a phone call I received from a homeowner this month I was told (none too politely) that security at Shelley Point is none existent and that the Security Service Provider and I were completely ineffective. While I disagree with his assessment, the homeowner is of course entitled to his opinion and is entitled to express this freely to myself and to anyone else who cares to listen. I would however ask that this be done in a constructive and courteous manner bearing in mind that I am also a resident and homeowner at Shelley Point and the safety and security of my family and my property is of prime concern to me as it is to all homeowners. My vested interest is thus in ensuring the security system works and that it continually evolves towards excellence. While the role of ADT (or any other security service provider) is of prime importance, it is only one component of a complete security system. Technology, information, rules and regulations etc are also important tools, but by far the most important weapon in our security arsenal is community involvement. Each and every one of us needs to act as the eyes and ears that identify potential and actual threats and report these for action. I would like to assure everyone that all information in this regard is taken seriously and is dealt with appropriately. The past month has seen the introduction of a new foot patrol management system at Shelley Point. Prior to the introduction of this system it has been difficult to assess the level of adherence to, and the effectiveness of, foot patrols that are designed to improve the level of visible security across the estate. While no system can be claimed as foolproof it is expected that the new controls will provide better management of our Security Service Provider going forward. As mentioned by the Chairman in his notes, there is still a problem with the control of dogs on the estate and several complaints regarding nuisance animals were received. All owners, property managers and visitors are earnestly requested to make sure that dogs do not present a danger or nuisance to others. One incident of theft was reported during the month. In this incident, a swimming pool chlorination system was stolen under odd circumstances. Homeowners are advised to take particular care when engaging the services of contractors to undertake works at their homes. Homeowners are reminded that the ADT Control Room is the first point of contact for any security-related issues or concerns. If they are unable to resolve the issue, they will get in touch with me. Please call me direct only in cases of emergency. Please remember to test your house alarm systems regularly. Regards Ian Mackintosh 3

Hierdie maand se wenfoto was op 22 Maart 2016 deur Karen Wainwright geneem. Golf: The situation with the golf club is much the same. The golf committee is waiting for the final submissions from the short-listed management companies and have a June 1 st deadline to sign with one of the operators. The course has benefitted from the recent rains but water still remains a problem. Bridge: We would like to take this a step further. At the end of the year, thumbnail prints of each monthly winning photo will be published and we will ask readers to vote for the one that appeals to them the most. The winning Shelley Point Photo of the Year will receive a prize courtesy of BON Hotel Shelley Point. So, get those cameras out and start snapping away. You can send in as many entries as you like but only one will be selected every month. SPORT AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Monthly Sundowners Get-Together With nights getting progressively longer and colder, why not beat the winter blues and come along to the next gettogether. The drinks are cold but the company is extremely warm and friendly. The next Sundowners is on Friday 24 June at the clubhouse from 5-7pm. Bring a plate of snacks to share. As jy graag voëls in jou tuin voer sal hulle n appel geniet en nooit nee sê vir n bietjie gerasperde kaas nie. At certain times of the year, one regularly comes across the bodies of dead seal pups whose bodies have been washed ashore. They appear to have no marks of them to suggest that they have been attacked by predators. From a very early age Deon always knew he wanted to be a chef. In pursuit of his dream, his first job was to wash pots in a restaurant in Johannesburg at the age of sixteen following which, he undertook many different and exciting avenues that included fine dining restaurants, institutional catering businesses, hotels and most recently, the European Super Yacht Industry. With 34 years of experience in various roles, Deon has covered most disciplines in the food and beverage sphere; from Front Of House to Back Of House to the level of Restaurant GM and of eventually, his ideal position of Executive Chef. Deon is known for his acute attention to detail, dedication to service excellence and offering top quality, and is of the opinion that these are a sublime form of art. Deon s mom played a big role in his life. She is a pillar of strength, his moral compass, best friend and most honest critic.
