Term 2 Week 10, 6th July 2017 Settlers Farm Campus R-7 Phone: Fax: School dl.1851.info@schools.sa.edu.au INSIDE THIS ISSUE Principal s News SFC Cancer Council Australia s Biggest Morning Tea Photos Skeleton Crew Visit R-3 Volcanoes By H05 Student Leaders News School Disco Photos G01 Australian Art Poetry By C02 Cats Woolworths Earn and Learn Vacation Care Program for the July School Holidays COMING EVENTS End of Term 2 Friday 7th July Early Dismissal 2.05pm Casual Clothing Gold Coin Donation School (Term 3) Resumes Monday 24th July Dear Families, We are at the end of yet another term. Don t forget that school finishes at 2:05pm this Friday. Reports will be coming home this week. If you would like to discuss anything in the report with your child s teacher I have no doubt they would be more than happy to speak with you. In last week s newsletter we added information about understanding the grading system of reports. This may assist you in your queries. Our disco on Friday raised $1600, which is almost three times more than last year; perhaps it was the addition of the snacks? It was a huge success. Thank you so much to all members on the fundraising committee and in particular Ann Shepherdson, Val Kamilow and Lisa Muhlback who worked tirelessly on the day to make it the great success that it was. This year s organisation and delivery was outstanding! Fundraising money this year is for improving our grounds. It is the Governing Council that decides on the projects from fundraising and also monitor where the funds are spent. Reconciliation Day on Tuesday was another fabulous event, adding to so many this term. Another huge thank you to this committee! Hopefully you heard all about it from the students. Homestead classes and some specialist teachers have moved during this week in preparation for our STEM Works which is due to commence these holidays. This is always a huge undertaking, particularly during a busy term. Builders are on tight schedules to meet DECD timelines which does not give us much wiggle room on the timing. After having been through the BER project and other Capital Works projects many times we have learned that is short term pain for long term gain. The new facilities will add so much to our learning environment and our programs. I certainly hope that families have some wonderful together time planned for these holidays. Stay well and safe. Rest up well as there are so many more events to come this year. Kind regards, Tanya Below is a statement from Alan Reid about our public education system Tanya Oshinsky Principal Jo Sayers Deputy Principal Students with Special Needs Maureen Williams Student Wellbeing Senior Leader Sarah Crosby Improvement in Teaching & Learning Senior Leader Ann Shepherdson Innovation in Teaching & Learning Senior Leader Paula Mulholland Kindergarten Director Jan Hutchison OSHC Director Our public education system- worth protecting Many of us take our public education system for granted. It has just always been there. But changes over the decades have eroded the status and funding of our public schools. Alan Reid, a Professor at the University of South Australia has studied our public school system and is alerting us to its value to Australia society. The public system serves ALL children and seeks to level the playing field in order to give every child equal access to the benefits of a good life. It is important that everyone understands the vital role that the public school systems plays in creating a fair Australian community. Alan says that the public education system is there as a common good that is a service to benefit all Australians regardless of income or background. The first step in defending and promoting public education is to return to the foundational understandings upon which public education has been built, to ensure that these inform policy and practice in Australian education, and that these foundational understandings are preserved and strengthened, rather than ignored or diminished RESPECT RESPONSIBILITY PERSONAL BEST
Settlers Farm Campus R-7 Staff held the Cancer Council s Biggest Morning Tea on Tuesday 20th June. Staff supplied a delicious spread of food and donated much needed money to the cause. Staff raised an amazing $445!!! 2

4 In Science, H05 students have been working on physical changes and chemical changes. Last Thursday in groups of three in the sand pit, we made volcanoes. The ingredients were vinegar, bi-carbonate soda, dishwashing detergent and food colouring. In our groups, we constructed our volcanoes by moulding the sand around a bottle, with top left off. The bottle acted like the magma chamber, vent and crater in a real volcano. Next, we made a mixture with the bi-carbonate soda, dish washing liquid and the food colouring and then tipped it all into the volcano.
5 Lastly, we added the vinegar. BOOM! Each of our volcanoes erupted. Do you know what sort of change it was? It was a chemical change. The vinegar reacted with the bi-carb soda a chemical change took place when the carbon dioxide was produced. Bi-carb soda + vinegar = gas (Carbon dioxide). (C02) -> pressure -> eruption
6 Paralowie High S chool Transition On Friday 23 rd of June, Ghost gum's year 6/7 s went to Paralowie High School for a transition visit. The subjects were art/tech, PE/science, music/ science, and digital tech/inquiry. The groups were sorted to do 2 activities during the sessions. DISCO On Friday the 30 th, the whole of Settlers Farm had a school Disco. The Disco was located in the Hall. Children were permitted to either wear casual clothes or fancy dress. The best Disco dancers won prizes from the DJ. The DJ also had an awesome smoke machine. The year sevens enjoyed the disco, and loved dancing to all the older songs that brought back some awesome old school nostalgia.

Our class has been exploring Australian themed art this term to link in with our History and Geography components of the curriculum. We also drew close ups of gum leaves and did Aboriginal dot paintings. Students experimented with colour and noted that Australian plants, particularly Eucalyptus plants, have a wide variety of colour schemes. 8
