3 NEWPORT BEACH 49 TH -ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE AND FUNDRAISER Thank you to all of our supporters for attending our 49th-anniversary Open House and Fundraiser! Hosted by President Denise Johnston and organized by Shelter Manager Brooke Anders, it took place at Newport Beach Marriott Bayview this year with delicious cuisine, education and entertainment, and as always, a Silent Auction for our guests. Everyone also enjoyed the kitten kissing booth, with seven NatCat sharing some love. FEATURED FRIEND, MIDNIGHT Midnight is a dark 2-year-old polydactyl domestic shorthair male that will light up your life! He loves to cuddle, and his extra toes give him a unique way to grab on to you and never let go. He also likes to play, and his nimble legs give him the special skill of flying high to catch toys. He gets along really well with other cats and people, making him a lively addition to any responsible family. Make sure to join us for our 50 th -anniversary Open House and Fundraiser next year! A special thanks to Pat Kinsey for speaking and Trent Slatton for emceeing. We d also like to recognize our donors including Steven Jadczak and his business, Light Up My Holiday, for the decorations that added life to the day. SUCCESS STORY, BEAST AND FRANKIE Beast and Frankie are the purr-fect pair, as they re both affectionate, cuddly, playful, and loyal. Frankie, the sweet, silent type, is the yin to the yang of Beast, the active attention seeker. Despite their all-around adorableness, however, their previous owner couldn t keep them due to some unfortunate circumstances. So they came here, and they loved it! Playing fetch, nuzzling catnip, finding any lap to sit on they made it easy for us to give them a whole lot of love right back. Then one day, a couple just as charming as Beast and Frankie came in. They were looking for a cute combo, and we knew their ideal match! So we introduced them, and sure enough, they fell head over heels for Beast s endearing neediness and Frankie s gentle demeanor. We recently heard that Beast and Frankie are all settled in and doing wonderfully, and we re so happy that they get to live and love together forever! CAT CLUE Asthma and Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease (H.A.R.D.), which is caused by heartworms dying in the lungs, are different conditions, but they require similar treatments. 4 SPRING VALLEY FEATURED FRIENDS, SAWYER AND TINY Sawyer is a 10-month-old white domestic shorthair male, and Tiny is a 9-month-old tabby domestic shorthair female. They came in with one another, and they d like to leave the same way. Sawyer is deaf, which makes him a bit shy but Tiny brings out his braver side. They both love to play, and together, would be a dynamic duo for a happy home. Sawyer Tiny FELINE FIELD (Continued from page 8) You can also reduce flare-ups by using an air purifier, getting rid of or reducing carpet, preventing her exposure to dust and smoke, minimizing her exposure to vapors from household cleaning solutions and aerosol sprays, and eliminating any mold and mildew. NATIONAL VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION WEEK AT NatCat In came our many volunteers, and out came the muffins, apples, cookies, iced tea, and decorations in celebration! For National Volunteer Appreciation Week, which took place from April 23 rd to April 29 th, we welcomed our own volunteers with heart-shaped notes describing their tasks to show our appreciation. They help us in so many ways fostering our kittens, socializing our shy cats, and photographing our kitties for social media so they can be seen. They also feed our cats, brush and groom our cats, walk our leash cat, Cloudy, help with all shelter events, donate items for our Open House and Fundraiser, and help with repairs around the shelter. During the week, we made sure to thank each and every volunteer we saw, and express how much of a difference they make for us in reaching our goals. In return, they said they felt appreciated and moved by our efforts which we were so glad to hear, as we know that without them, we d be lost. So thank you to all of our volunteers both new and long term for giving of yourselves so we can care for our kitties. We can t imagine what we d do without you. CAT TIP Before you brush your cat, make sure her fur is naturally glossy and springy to the touch, without baldness, fleas and ticks, skin wounds, or bumps. For more on brushing, check out page 10. 5 FELINE FIELD Helping you get to know more about your cat... Asthma If your cat is coughing, experiencing difficulty breathing, wheezing, or showing bluish or purplish gums, she may have asthma. More than 80 million cats currently live in American homes, and veterinary epidemiologists estimate that 800,000 or more of these animals 1% or so of the nation s domestic feline population suffer from acute or chronic asthma, writes the Cornell Feline Health Center. Young or older, female or male all cats are at equal risk of developing the condition. About Asthma Asthma is caused by constricted airways, which extend from the trachea to the lungs. In an asthmatic kitty, allergens cause the immune system to release stimulants that lead the bronchi to inflame and swell, and the surrounding muscle to contract. These responses cause the airway to narrow, which makes breathing hard. At the Vet If you re seeing symptoms of asthma in your cat, you should immediately take her to your veterinarian, who will examine her and take x-rays. The earlier you can take her in, the better as even if the asthma is in its earliest stages, it can rapidly progress to be more severe. The vet may also put her on oxygen if she is really struggling, take blood and lung samples to run tests, and/or order a fecal exam to rule out lungworm. For treatment, your vet will likely give your cat a corticosteroid to open and relieve inflammation in her lungs. Typically, your cat will be sent home once she is breathing normally and a tentative diagnosis has been made, says PetMD. At Home At home, you may need to give your kitty a glucocorticoid like prednisolone, and an inhaler for future episodes. A chamber will come with the inhaler, and its mask will fit your cat s face. You should only need to hold it to her face for 10 seconds for her to get a puff or two. 6 CAT CABLE Supplying the latest information in cat care... Brushing Brush for benefits! Brushing your cat removes tangles, dirt, grease, dead hair, and dandruff; stimulates blood circulation; helps prevent hairballs; spreads natural oils; and improves skin. One or two brushings per week will help kitty to keep her healthy glow, writes the ASPCA. And you ll find that regular sessions are especially beneficial when your cat ages and is no longer able to groom so meticulously on her own. Brushing short hair can go a long way. To properly brush your shorthaired sweetie once a week: 1. Use a metal comb. 2. Brush him from head to toe, in the direction of the fur s growth. 3. Brush him all over, focusing on one section at a time while making sure to gently get the chest and belly. For your longhaired love every few days: 1. Use a bristle or rubber brush. 2. Brush his belly and legs upward toward his head. 3. Brush his neck upward toward his chin. 4. Part his fur down the middle of his tail, and brush each side. 5. Sprinkle talcum powder on any knots, and use your fingers to work through them. These sessions are also a great time to check for wounds and bumps, fleas and ticks, and feces that may need to be snipped off. Based on information from: Cat Grooming Tips. (2017). ASPCA.
