2 EDUCATION Providing humane education to support seniors EVENTS Keeping you informed of community events... Pet Therapy with Moose NatCat continuously provides humane education for our local communities. As part of these educational efforts, we offer pet therapy, showing everyone involved that treating animals with kindness can provide many benefits for humans. Happy animals make for healthy people, as countless studies show animals can lower blood pressure, improve heart health, alleviate depression, decrease feelings of isolation, and encourage communication, just to name a few of the benefits. Since early April 2015, NatCat Spring Valley Operations Manager Patrice Waller and one of our volunteers, Meg Sterling, have been taking our kitty Moose to local assisted living and nursing facilities. Our volunteer Judy Kravetz has also helped out and will continue to help as Meg is unavailable. Moose is one cool cat that just everyone loves! He sits on the residents laps or cuddles with them in bed, and they really look forward to his visits. We get a lot of comments from them on how much Moose brightens their day a few examples of what they say are I d like to keep him here. He is such a sweetheart, I just want to wrap my arms around him and never let go, and I love how he just cuddles up with me. He has happy paws. Another resident says, Oh, I just love Moose. It is so hard being somewhere where you can t have a pet when you ve had cats all your life. We re just so glad we can bring comforts of home through the company of a cat to these sometimes lonely places. As humane educators, NatCat teaches people to treat all animals with compassion, respect, and empathy every day. Through education and therapy, we can humanely protect the furry creatures that are more than happy to give us love, health, and happiness in return. NatCat FEEDBACK We hope you enjoy purr-using Feline Defenders every quarter. Let us know what you think or what you d like to see in future issues at newport@natcat.org! 3 NEWPORT BEACH AMERICA S FAMILY PET EXPO 2015 We just love attending America s Family Pet Expo, where we can regale the pet-loving attendees with tails of the cats we shelter and of the shelter we maintain. While chatting cats with everyone who stopped by, we sold NatCat t-shirts, the board game CAT-OPOLY, paw-print bracelets, and NatCat ribbon magnets. We also played the game Feed the Kitty, awarding candy to kids who landed a catnip mouse in the cat s mouth. We received double the space this year, so our booth gave us plenty of room to display our items both informative and fun. We d like to express a lot of thanks to everyone who supported us throughout this event! First, we d like to thank the attendees who donated to and who will spread the word about NatCat. We re also thankful for our volunteers who donated their time over the three days! Finally, we d like to thank World Pet Association for, once again, giving us the opportunity to publicly deliver on our mission to protect and defend felines. CAT CABLE (Continued from page 10) Dark brown wax in the ear canal An unpleasant odor in the canal Loss of balance and disorientation Hearing loss Bleeding Based on information from: Ear Care. (2015). The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Do I Need to Clean My Cat s Ears? (2015). Banfield.com. Visit Cat Cable in Feline Defenders every issue to read the latest in cat care. If there s any specific information you d like to see in Feline Field or Cat Cable, please notify the Newport Beach shelter. SUCCESS STORY, CODY AND BLACK Cody and Black started out in a daycare facility, but when their owners unfortunately couldn t keep them, they ended up here at NatCat. As loving as they are large, they ve always gotten along great with other cats, but they especially love one another. That s why we knew that we could never separate them. So when an amazing couple fell in love with their easygoing personalities and adopted them right away, you can imagine how thrilled we all were! They finally got their happy ending, in a new home where two kitties plus their two new owners equals mutual love four-ever! 47 TH -ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE AND FUNDRAISER The clouds parted and fortune shined down on our event this year! The beautiful day brought in a lot of supporters both new and existing who bid on an equally ample number of gift baskets and items. It seemed like there were that many anyway, considering the bid sheets filled our normal tables as well as an extra one we had to set up in the middle of the courtyard! A lot of attendees also enjoyed sorting through and purchasing the unique jewelry, raffle items, and t-shirts we displayed. Thank you so much to all who made time to join the fun! And as always, we re especially grateful for our dedicated volunteers who make the day possible to help our many kitties in need. CAT CLUE Forty percent of cats at least 17 years old experience disorientation, which is often the first sign of cognitive decline. For more on Feline Cognitive Dysfunction, check out page 8. 4 SPRING VALLEY THE IMPORTANCE OF SPAYING AND NEUTERING Each year, approximately 1.4 million cats are euthanized because they can t find a home. Spaying and neutering prevents overpopulation leading to this euthanasia. It also prevents health issues like uterine infections; breast or testicular cancer; and undesirable behaviors like yowling, frequent urination, and aggression. NatCat does our part by spaying or neutering all of our cats prior to adoption. We also provide low-cost referrals and occasional services. Please help us by spreading the word on the importance of spaying and neutering in your community! PICTURE FRAME CONTEST To show off our adorable adoptables, we wanted to put their photos and information in picture frames with nine openings. The frames would appear in Gino s Den and Krull s Place, where our adoptable cats reside. But of course, we wanted the frames to look fab, not drab, so we decided to host a contest for Helix High School in La Mesa, asking them to design a background. We then made the design pink for the female cats and blue for the males. After we picked the winner and awarded this Junior a portable speaker and power supply for her cell phone, our operations manager, Patrice Waller, gave a presentation on the work we do to the school s Animal Rights Club. It went really well! Asking a lot of questions, the students were excited to learn about NatCat. They re even planning on taking a field trip to our shelter next year! FEATURED FRIEND, MISS BEA Miss Bea is a 3-year-old black domestic longhair female. Holding a lot of love in her heart, she d like to let it loose on a deserving family! She d fit in so well with one considering she gets along great with children and other cats. FELINE FIELD (Continued from page 8) Temperament Acting restless or irritated Loudly vocalizing Sleep Sleeping more during the day Vocalizing more at night Waking up during the night If you think your cat is showing signs of FCD, take her to a veterinarian. If the vet rules out other medical issues, you can provide therapy by changing your environment to meet her needs, maintaining a routine schedule, and feeding her a vitamin E- and antioxidant-rich diet. Your vet may also recommend an FCD or anti-anxiety medication. Based on information from: Behavior Problems in Older Cats. (2015). The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Cognitive Dysfunction. (2015). Cornell Feline Health Center. NatCat protects and defends all felines of all breeds and mixes. Knowing increasingly more about felines can help you understand your own cat s behavior and desires. Visit Feline Field in Feline Defenders every issue to obtain such knowledge, which can only nurture a happier and healthier relationship with your faithful friend. CAT TIP If your cat s inner ears aren t pink and debris-, odor-, and earwaxfree, consider cleaning them. For more on providing ear care, check out page 10. FELINE DEFENDERS 6 7 FELINE DEFENDERS
5 FELINE FIELD Helping you get to know more about your cat... Feline Cognitive Dysfunction We wish the cats we re providing forever homes for could stay forever young, but unfortunately, we all grow older. Fifty-five percent of cats from 11 to 15 years old, and 80% of cats from 16 to 20 experience cognitive decline called feline cognitive dysfunction, or FCD. FCD can affect memory, orientation, social behavior, activity, temperament, and sleep. These are signs of FCD that fall under each category: Memory Eliminating in meal or sleep areas Missing the litterbox Not recognizing familiar people and animals Orientation Aimlessly wandering Getting lost in familiar environments Getting stuck amid interfering objects Staring blankly Social Behavior Clinging on to people Losing interest in petting, interacting with, or greeting people and animals Activity Eating less Exploring less Grooming less Responding less Continued on page 7 Like National Cat Protection Society Spring Valley at and National Cat Protection Society Newport Beach natcatnewportbeach to learn the latest at NatCat! 6 CAT CABLE Supplying the latest information in cat care... Ear Care Ears show their cat s thoughts in many ways, straightening up at the sound of a can opener or flattening out at feelings of irritation, but the kitty can t even think of cleaning them. That s where you come in keep your cat s acute sense of hearing and sharp knack for flexibility in tact by cleaning his ears for him. Routine cleaning and/or at-home examination lets you detect any infections or other problems early, writes Banfield Pet Hospital. Prompt treatment offers a better prognosis, reduces the potential for chronic disease, hearing loss, and gives earlier relief for any discomfort your pet may have. To clean them: 1. Remove heavy, excess, dirty, or matted fur from inside of the ear flap and around the ear canal, as it can decrease air flow, and trap wax and other debris. 2. Apply a mild liquid ear cleaner, specifically made for pets, that your veterinarian recommends using a cotton ball. Don t use vinegar, alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide. 3. Gently fold back the ear. 4. Wipe away any earwax, dirt, or debris, lifting vs. rubbing it. Don t try to clean the canal because it could cause trauma or infection. If you notice any of these issues, consider contacting your vet: Excess scratching, pawing, or rubbing at the ears Sensitivity or pain to touch Head tilting or shaking Redness, swelling, masses, or black or yellow discharge inside of the ear flap Continued on page 4 Where There s a Will, There s a Way Protect the Ones You Love Give the gift of quality life after you re gone by including the National Cat Protection Society in your will. Our cat shelter and humane education programs provide responsible cat care, teach animal population control, and enhance animal welfare for our communities.
