1 Newsletter February 2013 Est The purpose of this organization is to develop, promote the proper breeding, humane treatment, and care of birds of all kinds and varieties. To reproduce, exchange, publish and distribute information on aviculture which will tend to increase the knowledge of its members. To cooperate with other organizations and governmental agencies toward the establishment of practices for improved breeding, handling and treatment of all birds. Happy Valentine s Day! 2013 Dates of Bird Club Meetings: February 17 March 17 April 21 May 19 June 9* July 21 August 18 September 15 October 26** November 17 December 15 * June one week early due to Fathers Day! **CCCBC 60th Annual Bird Show & Mart on Saturday no meeting! 2013 Club Officers President s Message Hi Friends! I have one comment about the past month.bbbrrrrrrrr! Luckily, our canaries are all inside now and our very hearty English Budgies are thriving, snug in their thick-plastic wrapped cage and right up against the kitchen door. Whenever we get some sun, they start chirping away, however I ve noticed that they are eating MUCH more than usual. My husband and I are pairing up our canaries and we are looking forward to a great breeding season (keeping my fingers crossed, anyway). Speaking of breeding, I wanted to thank Darrell Brewer for stepping in and giving the presentation after we learned Naomi could not make it due to a family emergency. He gave a lot of good information and led a very informative discussion about his breeding techniques. Also, Darrell volunteered, and was approved by the board, as our new Secretary. We will be putting his expertise to good use on the Show Committee. Welcome to the Board, Darrell! Next month, we are holding our annual Buy-Sell-Trade event. Terese and Terry are putting some advertisements together and we are expecting non-members to come to buy. So please bring all your sale birds. You never know, you just might sell out! See you there! Jane Meetings are held at: Stanislaus County Agricultural Center 3800 Cornucopia Way Modesto, CA (corner of Crows Landing & E. Service Road) 1 President: Jane Perez 1st VP: Sherry Fisher 2nd VP: Julie Faria Secretary: Darrell Brewer Treasurer: Sharon Byrne Newsletter: Terry Ryan Webmaster: Jim Carter Show Manager: Jane Perez Mart Manager: Terese Davis Buy Sell Trade! Sunday February 17th 1:00pm Birds, cages & more! There is normally a wide variety of things! Open to all! Bring a friend!
2 It s that time of the year! Our Buy-Sell- Trade event, Sunday, February 17th, 2013 at 1pm. Members will be bringing in birds, cages and other items. Set up time for members is 12:00pm. We will also have a silent auction, a potluck and a raffle to boot! There will be Finches, Canaries, Lovebirds, Diamond Doves, Button Quail and more so bring your family, bring your friends and join us for a good time! A bird does not sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song. ~Chinese Proverb Central California Cage Bird Club Minutes January 20, 2013 Our new President Jane Perez called the meeting to order at 1:16pm. She announced that I, Darrell Brewer, has been approved by the board to be the club secretary being no one was nominated or elected. It was also announced that any club expenditures must be brought to the meeting and approved by all with the exception of money spent to maintain the website and newsletter. She reported that we are looking for a place to hold our 60 th Annual Bird Show & Bird Mart. Jane & Dave, Terese & Jimmy and I looked at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds which has a very nice building however a gun show is planned in the neighboring building which we feel is detrimental. The Ag Center was considered but is to small even with both buildings. The SOS Club had raised the rates and can t guarantee the use of the building on Friday night. The Norwegian Racket Club was mentioned but has limited parking. We hope to have a venue by the next meeting. She reported that I am working on hiring the judges. We are also looking for Show Sponsorship. Terry designed a flyer that will be in the next newsletter so if you d like to sponsor a particular class please do so soon. It was decided that there will be a $10/year fee for receiving the newsletter by US Mail. The cost of a newsletter is about $1/copy. If this fee presents a hardship for a member, they can contact an officer to have the fee waived. If you have any program suggestions please contact Sherry. Terese purchased some round tablecloths that she thought we would like. It was agreed to purchase these by the members present and she will be responsible for them and their care. Terry made up club business cards. If anyone would like some please let her know. The meeting was adjourned at 1:27pm to proceed with the potluck & raffle. Respectfully submitted, Darrell Brewer 2
3 Central California Cage Bird Club Newsletter February 2013 Preparation & Breeding of Canaries by Darrell Brewer who filled in for Naomi as noted by Terry Ryan Darrell has been a breeder of Gloster and Lizard Canaries since He also breeds Yorkshire canaries. He has about 200 birds at this time. He has encountered many problems over the years including Canary Pox and mites! He houses his birds in English Box Breeders that can be one large cage or up to 3 smaller cages using dividers. He uses glass drinkers, plastic seeders and small perches. He buys recycled unprinted newsprint from U-haul for the bottom of his boxes. He uses plastic nests and tapes a coffee liner in each using masking tape. He keeps his birds in condition for shows, breeding and moulting depending on the time of the year. He mixes his own seed and in the winter adds oat groats and Niger. He also raises Dandelions and Chickweed which grows year round in Albany for his birds. He also feeds collards which are not too expensive. He soaks greens in water with a few drops of Clorox and he never uses soaked seed due to the possibility of mold. Art Pacheco added that The Seed Cleaner is not a good thing. It s better to throw away seed then spreading a disease. He bakes homemade bread, using a bread maker machine, specifically for his birds using a white bread mix that he adds special items to. During breeding season he may also put in baby carrot food and ground up pet vitamins. He will put some of his bread & hard boiled eggs in a food processor for his chick food. He hesitates to buy commercial egg food because he doesn t know how clean it is. His lights are on an Avilite Dimmer that uses watt bulbs. New models can be set to duplicate dust to dawn. He is a dog groomer and the overhead lights are on timers also. Lighting needs to be very consistent changing about a minute/day. He uses Spec/Linx-50 antibiotics in the fall for 10 days on, 3 days off then 10 days on again, sterilizing the drinkers each day, then lets them rest for 10 days and does another round. This is considered preventative medicine! Darrell was asked about using probiotics which he doesn t, he just uses a lot of greens. Pairing of birds depends on the type of feather. He pulls a feather from between the chest and wing and puts it on black construction paper to see if it s long, short, fine or coarse. It is important to breed yellow to buff and the next year buff to buff. Controlling the length, width and density is what s important. He keeps track of his birds breeding in books that he puts the band numbers of the cock and hen, what colors they are and what type of feather they have. He sometimes tapes a feather in the book. Some people use cards and some even use a computer program to track their birds and are able to look back and see what birds they derived from. He was asked about line breeding and replied sure, but it s all about feather. He lets the male birds spare a bit as they get into season. He leaves the hens in flight cages until she starts to build a nest then into a box. He clips both the hen and cocks nails and trims their vents. He puts the hen in the box alone so it s HER cage. As she aggressively starts to build a nest in goes the cock. Pulling eggs is important so they all hatch at the same time unless you have other pairs to foster them. Darrell has square cups with hooks he puts on the outside of the cage and puts the pointed edge down. The last egg laid is always a different color. Some people put in a fake egg, marble or rock in place of the egg. He said that wasn t necessary but if you do, only one is needed. The eggs stay good for about a week so you can put them back when the last is laid, before or even a bit after. I know Naomi keeps eggs out and puts them all back under the hen on the same day of the week so they all hatch at about the same time. She finds it easier that way. The eggs should be clean, if not the bird may have a problem and need some sort of medication such as Baytril. Helpful Hints: Whenever you have attended a bird mart or have been in a filthy bird room, take off your clothes and wash immediately. Dust any birds you have purchased or ones you have shown with 5% Sevin dust to prevent any possibility of mites. It seems no matter who you are and how careful you can be, you ll end up with them someday. You can loose numerous birds fast! Ivermetrin can also be used for all types of mites including Air Sac Mites. It can be put on the nape of the neck or a vet can make a diluted solution to give. You can even purchase a water soluble Ivermetrin to put in the drinkers. Cleaning perches is very important for birds poop, step in it then go onto a perch, contaminating it and then wipes their beaks on it. Soak all perches in Bleach & water at a ratio, according to avian vet Dr. Jeanne Smith, of 5oz Bleach to gallon water. Be sure to rinse and dry well. Rotate drinkers with clean bleached ones often. Darrell does it every day! Hygiene is a big part of healthy birds! If you seem to be loosing a lot of birds, you may want to have an assessment. A vet can do a necropsy and send samples to one of the UC s for further determination. Darrell once had a problem with e coli in which only very specific drugs where of use. Be sure to always take time to watch your birds to see what is going on with them. If a bird even looks cross eyed at Darrell it is off to the hospital cage. Birds with heavy feather can get a pasted vent and will need to be cleaned. Ken Williams of the Budgie world added that mega bacteria is a big problem. You can look up Dr Robert Marshall who has provided a lot of information on the subject. Birds that are ill normally have an underlying problem way before things show up. You can try to give them Chickweed and cooked carrots. Dandelion tea can also help unfertile birds. Some say in regards to small birds, once a bird is sick it will never be the same while I ve heard others say a sick bird is a dead bird pertaining to small birds. Darrell noted that he had purchased some Finch mix as a treat from a local seed factory. It was in a plastic bag. A few days after feeding the seed his birds came down with diarrhea. The seed was cleaned using either Canola or Citrus oil and he feels the oil may have been rancid. He used Doxycycline on them and it cleaned them right up! 3
