1 New Club Officers take over the helm. Meet Our New Officers At the November bird club meeting, we elected new officers. The new President is Terese Davis, the Vice President is Janna Place, the Treasurer is Sherry Fisher and the new Secretary is Chryse Seeman, who is also the Assistant Show Manager and will head up the Finch Division. Terese Davis lives in Riverbank and has been raising birds since the late 80 s. Currently she has lovebirds, canaries, and several different kinds of finches. Her husband, Jimmy Carter, will be very Happy New Year! We are already making plans for another great show for We have a confirmation that Mr. Romeo Simonetto will be our Type I and Type II (Continued on page 3) Terese Terese Davis Davis active in putting together the Newsletter and keeping the membership lists up to date. Janna Place and her husband, Joel, (of Newman) raise parakeets CCCBC Club National Finch and Softbill Affiliation Chryse Seeman We have just sent an affiliation agreement to the National Finch and Softbill Society for the new year. By doing this, we will have an official NFSS Finch division as part of our show in October, We were affiliated this year as well. Exhibitors are eligible for points to be awarded to the top birds. The points available at any one show are determined by the number of birds entered. We will receive free advertising on the NFSS website and in the organization s Journal (published 6 times each year). We also, if we choose, can order rosettes with the NFSS logo to be awarded to the win- (Continued on page 2) Hookbill Headquarters On Raising Happy Hookers (including English budgies), lovebirds, red rumps, canaries, Lady Gouldian finches, and society finches. They have been very active in the bird community for many years, and have some very interesting methods of caring for their birds, using alternative holistic (Continued on page 2) I m all for letting my hookbills parakeets, lovebirds, cockatiels, et al, select their own mates. I find they re happier and get down to business more quickly than the birds who are forced upon each other. Of course, certain Central California Cage Bird Club by Janna Place Janna Place breeding programs require breeder selection, but my hobby hasn t taken me there. Yet. My version of natural selection works well when the birds are offered only pre-approved potential mates. Benny, Stephen and Chryse are working hard to bring the NFSS regional show to our annual show. This will be in addition to the regular Finch show. To make a long story short.we are working on presenting a double-header at the CCCBC 2007 show. Two judges will evaluate the birds, one judge in the morning and one judge after noon. It will be an opportunity for those interested in accumulating points, to have twice the chance to add points to their record. It will also give us an opportunity to hear two different opinions on our birds. We will invite Sally Huntington, President of the NFSS, to judge the regional show, the second judge has not been selected as of press time. Mrs. Huntington is well known and respected throughout the bird hobby, and she does a wonderful job of educating all within earshot.. She made the finch judging downright FUN this past year. Bennie has suggested a 100 bird entry to make this idea fly (no pun intended). Any members with finches of any type, or members who know finch enthusiasts.we need them all. Showing is FUN, interesting and educational just pick out a bird or two pop it into a showcage and bring em on down! Bringing this plan into reality and making it a profitable venture will take good planning, a thorough beating of the bushes for entries and hard work.but it is doable! Chryse Seeman Secretary Assistant Show manager. New Club Officers (Continued from page 1) remedies. We hope to learn more from them. Sherry Fisher (of Oakdale) has been a member of the bird club for about five years, and has brought lots of energy (and many new members) to the club. She served as Secretary last year and has now taken over the tasks of Treasurer. She has kept the books for her family businesses for many years and has an organized approach to finance. She raises canaries, Lady Gouldians, and cockatiels. Chryse Seeman (of Escalon) has lots of varied experience (I m still learning what she can do). She is an avid Zebra finch breeder and has lots of experience with breeding and showing. She brings her expertise in the bird show world to us and will be working very closely with Benny Jones in keeping our club shows in the world class category that it has enjoyed for many years. She has recently gotten our club certified as a national finch show. She has lots of energy and some wonderful ideas. Although we are new to these responsibilities, we are eager to learn and to grow with the club. Naomi Cisper, John Astorino, Pam Monterosso and Bob Gomes will continue as mentors and will help us to do the right thing. We have done a lot of research on the club s history and hope to continue the traditions of this fine club. Please do not hesitate to contact us with ideas and comments. We know that many of you have much more experience at this than we do, and we value your input. Thank you for you trust and faith in us. We will do our best to keep the club happy and healthy. Terese Davis President. Hookbill Headquarters (Continued from page 1) Happy Hookers With parakeets, who breed all year long, nothing happens until the hen is ready. Selection of a mate seems to be the gal s prerogative. She ll start flirting at about 8 months old and will likely stay with the first guy who responds. I don t let them settle down until the hen is at least 12 months. Refusing them a box is a lot easier on everyone than the consequences of breeding too early. The most available parakeet books say that once mated, they re lifetime companions. My experience says otherwise. In the open flight, they seem to stay together unless (or until) someone more interesting comes along. I ve had hens stay with their first choice right along, hens who run for cover and never do that again, and widow hens who do not pause before grabbing another guy. In a perfect birdy world, they will hop happily into the box when the time is right and leave it, happily, when the chicks have flown. After about six months of R&R, they ll start begging for another box and it all begins. Although it s gotten smoother, mine don t yet live in a perfect birdy world. I have learned from every challenge and I d like to hear your stories. Share observations and solutions, so we can all raise happier hookers. Raising Happy Hookers Janna Place Vice-President

3 Volume 1, Issue 1 (Continued from page 1) Judge. Some of you remember him from Vancouver, British Columbia. We also have a confirmation that Mr. Robert Trincado will be here to do the honors with our Colorbred Sections at our 2008 Show. I'm still working on filling that position with the Colorbreds at our 2007 show. With the repeated world reports concerning the global warming, it will be interesting to see how and IF there are breeding condition challenges in our own birdrooms. I have conversed for about 10 yrs with a Fife canary breeder in Scotland. I remember him saying about 8 yrs ago that there wasn't any discernible change in the seasons anymore there. Just food for thought! It s Show time Benny Jones Show manager Leg Bands There are two types of leg bands; Closed leg bands - Most closed leg bands are attached on a baby at about three weeks. It is slipped over the foot and as the leg grows, the foot becomes too large to allow the band to slip off. It should never be so tight as to cause swelling in your bird s leg. Closed bands usually signify that a bird is captive-bred. Closed bands are the most reliable band which cannot be substituted unless cut-off. Open leg bands are found on legally imported wild-caught birds. They are open to allow fitting on a fully-grown bird. Some breeders use open leg bands on their aviary birds that are caught at adult size. Bands come in metal or plastic. Breeders of captive-bred birds differentiate between the males/ females and parentage usually use the colored plastic bands. Leg bands are an inexpensive way to identify your bird. The other alternative is micro chipping. We feel that leg bands are important because they provide important identifications such as proof of ownership in cases of loss or theft, tracking and breeding histories, and they are required by government regulation. Birds that are being sold without leg bands can have questionable backgrounds such as theft and illegal entry in to the United States. If you choose to have your bird's leg band re- Page 3 moved, be sure to have a veterinarian do the cutting to avoid injury and he can also provide a certified document that your bird had a band and what the numbers were in case of future sale. Below are some of the common markings that can be found on leg bands: Open Bands Usually used to identify or sex an adult bird. Importers also use open bands to identify birds. Closed Bands - Will usually have a breeder code followed by identification numbers and the year it was born. Some of the common abbreviations for Organizations found on leg bands: ABS - American Buderigar Society ACS - American Cockatiel Society ALS - African Lovebird Society AS - American Singer Club NCS - National Cockatiel Society NFS - National Finch & Softbill SPBE - Society of Parrot Breeders & Exhibitors Article taken from website. we will have an official NFSS Finch division as part of our show in October, 2007.

6 Page 6 Vet News A woman brought a very limp parrot into a veterinary hospital. As she lay her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird s chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head sadly and said, I m so sorry. Polly has passed away. The distressed owner wailed, Are you sure? I mean, you haven t done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something. The vet rolled his eyes, shrugged, turned and left the room returning moments later with a beautiful black Labrador. As the bird s What s Good in the Garden? by Terese Davis I ve been raising canaries and lovebirds for a long time now. One of the many pleasures of having birds (or any kind of pet for that matter) is watching them eat and finding things that they like to eat. I love the fall and winter because the chickweed starts to come up all over my yard, in my garden patches, even in my potted plants. The birds love it! It can also be washed, bagged, and kept in the crisper when it s plentiful. I also find the rye grass just starting to go to seed and pluck some of that (when my husband hasn t mowed the lawn yet). In the summer I grow grape vines up against the aviary, providing shade, and of course the birds particularly welcome those tender new owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the exam table and sniffed the dead parrot from top to bottom. He then looked at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head. The vet then led the dog out, but returned a few moments later with a cat. The cat jumped up and also sniffed delicately at the ex-bird. The cat sat back, shook its head, meowed and ran out of the room. The vet looked at the woman and said, I m sorry, but like I said, your parrot is most definitely, 100% dead. He then turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which leaves. And when the grapes come, most of the crop goes into the aviary, as well. When I cut back the vines in the winter, before putting the plastic up, I save some of the twigs and branches for perches. The birds even like plain ol grass.they will pick at it for hours. Some of it they eat, and some I find later in the nests. When I get pomegranates, I break them open and put them into the flights. I don t know if the birds eat them, but I know they play with them because I find the red seeds scattered around and I ve seen some red beaks I save leftovers for the birds, too. Gasp! Leftovers? Yes, like broccoli (steamed or raw), carrots, whole grains with rice (no butter) and squash. They are particularly fond of spaghetti squash leftovers, as well he handed to the woman. The parrot s owner, still in shock, took the bill. $150! she cried. $150 just to tell me that my bird is dead?! The vet shrugged. If you d taken my word for it, the bill would only have $20. But with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan what did you expect? as butternut, etc. They like the whole-grained breads and I actually buy the Romaine lettuce for them. I grew summer squash once and they liked that (more than I did). I have a large orange tree and the canaries especially enjoy a half orange the lovebirds will eat them, too, but I cut them in quarters, so they can get their beaks around the fruit. An old trick we all know is putting pieces of orange or apple in the cages when we need to transport birds. It not only gives them something to do, it settles them down, and provides both food and water in one piece. A few words of warning I rarely spray any insecticides in my yard, and if I do, I carefully note where I don t want any of that getting into the aviary. TERESE
