1 Maui Humane Society Newsletter Fall 2013 Bodhi s Amazing Transformation: How the Wings of Aloha Fund Changed One Mangy Puppy s Life Forever Leila was given a second chance thanks to Wings of Aloha program. Above: Leila with her new family in Sisters, Oregon. (Left) Wings of Aloha pup Bodhi when he first arrived at Maui Humane Society. (Right) Bodhi, now named Chunk, 10 weeks later at his foster home in Oregon. At only 8 weeks old Bodhi found himself all alone and wandering the streets in Lahaina. He was hungry and thirsty, but most of all he was looking for someone anyone, who would pick him up and give him some hugs and snuggles. You see more than anything else Bodhi simply loved people and the feeling of security that they bring. When one of the Field Officers from Maui Humane Society picked him up to bring him back to safety, he was all tail wags and puppy kisses. As you can see from his original photo, Bodhi suffered from a pretty severe case of Demodectic Mange. Mange is a skin disease caused by several species of tiny mites, common external parasites found in companion canines. Some mange mites are normal residents of your dog s skin and hair follicles, while others are not. All mites can cause mild to severe skin infections if they proliferate. Demodectic mange is very treatable and fortunately cannot be transmitted to humans. While it s true that mange is treatable, like many shelters the Maui Humane Society has very limited resources. We knew the shelter was no place for Bodhi and that he would be better off receiving treatment with a rescue in foster care. Thankfully, one of the directors at the shelter completely fell in love with Bodhi and contacted one of our Wings of Aloha partners in Oregon to ask them to please consider taking the sweet, bald pup into their rescue. The Wings of Aloha program is a privately funded program with the sole purpose of flying shelter pets from the Maui Humane Society to adoption guaranteed rescues and shelters on the mainland. It s hard to believe that not all shelters suffer from the overpopulation crisis that we do here on Maui, but lucky for us Oregon s All For Dogs Rescue has welcomed several of Maui s unwanted dogs with open arms. (continued on page 3) 1
2 Message from our Board of Directors By Dr. Judy Aikawa, MD It has been my privilege to serve on the Maui Humane Society Board of Directors for the past four years. It is a challenging yet immensely satisfying role. People sometimes ask me, What does the Board of Directors do? The role of the MHS board is one of oversight, governance, and long-term vision- not day-to-day operational management, which is the responsibility of our CEO. MHS board members are not paid for their service. In fact, MHS Bylaws prohibit board members from receiving any form of payment. An MHS board member donates his or her time and expertise to support and promote the mission, policies, programs and efforts of the agency. Members are required to attend monthly board meetings, serve on board committees, provide a level of financial support, and avoid any action or associations that would constitute a conflict of interest. Qualities especially valued for potential board members are the ability to listen, analyze, and work creatively, as well as be respectful and receptive to other peoples opinions and ideas. All Board members bring to the position innate common sense, a love of animals and the benefit of their own unique life experience. Since nonprofits like MHS cannot afford to pay board members (as large for-profit corporations do), volunteer board service is an effective way for our agency to tap into a cross-section of viewpoints and expertise. When seeking new board members, we often look for people with specific areas of expertise who can assist the board and the agency in doing its job. For example, our current MHS Board is made up of professionals, business owners and executive-level individuals who are experts in the areas of accounting and finance, law, public relations and advertising, human resources, nonprofit agencies, veterinary and human medicine, property management, and the hospitality industry. In addition, some board members have been long-time MHS volunteers and bring special insights into the needs and functions of our agency gained from that perspective. Ultimately the MHS Board of Directors is a group of volunteers with varying personal and professional backgrounds who are united by a passion to help animals and a willingness to contribute their time and expertise for the benefit of the community and the animals that MHS serves. DID YOU KNOW? 1 in 3 pets get lost in their lifetime. Dr. Judy Aikawa, MD Board Chair, Maui Humane Society Over 70% of the animals brought to MHS are strays. In the last 3 months, MHS has taken 563 lost & found pet reports, helping reunite pets and families without animals even coming in to the shelter. Permanent identification (microchips and tattoos) greatly increase the chance of a missing pet getting back home but require keeping contact information up to date with the registering agency. Visible identification (collar & ID tags) is still the most effective method of getting lost pets home. WISH LIST Below are items that will greatly help us do more for the animals. Please consider sending an extra donation or gifting an item or two from the list below. If you own a business or have special skills or services and can offer assistance for special projects, please call Jerleen at (808) ext 32. No gift is too small and every penny helps! Thank you so much for your continued support. 3 Bodhi s Amazing Transformation...continued from page 1 President of All For Dogs Rescue, Kym Garrett has this to say about Bodhi (who is now named Chunk): When All For Dogs Rescue of Central Oregon received a phone call that there was a Pitbull puppy with mange that needed rescue, AFD knew they could help. Chunk arrived in Central Oregon a bald-headed puppy with cropped ears and a HUGE personality. No one could tell him that he was bald and funny-looking and slightly resembled a gremlin! Chunk quickly became friends with all the animals in his foster home; he wouldn t have it any other way. He greets everyone, and we mean everyone and everything he meets, with the same endearing soul that makes everyone laugh, smile and fall in love with him. Chunk is now mange-free after completing all his necessary treatment and as his name implies he s growing into a stout little boy. His tail rarely stops wagging and he continues to make friends everywhere he goes. He may look serious in his photo, but he s actually one chunky goofball! Here s what you can do to help: Donate! Your monetary donations for this program will go directly to flight expenses for each animal traveling to the mainland to find their forever home. Please note that your donation is for the Wings of Aloha Program and make payable to: Maui Humane Society, PO Box 1047, Pu unene, HI Fly with a pet! If you have a flight booked to the mainland, contact us to find out if we are flying pets to your destination. If so, the pets can fly on your same flight! This reduces our cost to fly the pets because they are accompanied by a ticketed passenger. All you have to do is show up for your flight as scheduled, and we do the rest! Contact our Animal Transport Coordinator to find out more at (808) ext. 17, or JFitzpatrick@MauiHumaneSociety.org. Offer Goods and Services. Organizations that can provide air kennels or flight accommodations either through private airlines or discounted flights will enable us to help more animals. 3 MHS Animal Care Attendant Kalena says goodbye to Chunk before he leaves on his flight to Oregon. There are many animals here at the shelter waiting and hoping for their opportunity to fly to the mainland and a chance at a new life, all it takes is the funds to do so. If you would like to give a homeless dog this amazing life saving opportunity you can do so by donating to the Wings of Aloha Program. Every penny received goes directly to pay for transport costs. You may not be able to save all of the animals in this world, but your help will mean the world to the one you do save. Mature Mabel is Looking For That Special Someone! This sweet mature girl came into the shelter heartworm positive and because of her exceptional temperament and sparkling personality, she won the hearts of staff and volunteers alike! Thanks to donations to the Hope Fund, we were able to treat Mabel s heartworm. Today, Mabel s treatment in foster care is nearing the end and it s time to find her the home she deserves. That s where YOU come in! Please share Mabel s story far and wide and let s see how powerful the MHS ohana can be! Here is what Mabel s foster mom Jenny has to say about her: Mabel has a motherly way about her with other dogs and loves kids. She knows sit & shake and is house-broken. There is such an appreciative look as she gazes into our eyes... She s so thankful for a soft bed and the love she gets! Mabel is a medium energy girl and would be an awesome addition to any family. She has really captured our hearts. If you or someone you know is interested in giving Mabel a loving home to live out her golden years, please contact our Adoption Counselors at (808) ext. 26 or Adoptions@MauiHumaneSociety.org.
4 Happy Endings Proof that your support makes a difference! TIKI (formerly Bethany) Now lives: Tacoma, Washington Do you all remember Bethany, the Hope Fund dog? Thanks to donations from people like you, Bethany is now living a better life on three legs. A couple that had donated to her cause decided to adopt her with a special lady in mind - their recently widowed mother in Tacoma, Washington. As soon as Bethany was fit to fly, she was on her way to the Mainland and re-named Tiki to honor her Hawaiian roots. Tiki starts each day by waking her mom up at 6am with a big kiss. Then, the duo hop in their truck and head to the local coffee shop for a morning chat with the neighbors. The rest of Tiki s day is spent digging holes with her one good leg and basking in the sun. She has even traded-in chasing geckos for squirrels! Tiki has given her new mom much comfort in a time of grief with her constant companionship. We also heard that she is still a Maui girl at heart and refuses to go out if it is too cold or raining unless, of course, she has one of her many stylish jackets on! EHU Now lives: Cape Cod, Massachusetts Ehu was on her second stint at the shelter and was really starting to get bummed out when she met the Pye family who were visiting from Massachusetts for their regular 6 month stay. Having left their Coon Hound and Beagle on the Mainland due to quarantine restrictions, they began visiting the Humane Society to get their daily dog fix when they met Ehu. Hound dog family spied hound dog, and the connection was immediate! Over the next few months the family s bond to this beautiful, elegant dog grew and grew. When the time came to pack up and ship out, Dad and daughter Joy knew they could not leave without Ehu- so with one more day left here on Maui they came in to make it official! It was a long flight, but Ehu loves her new digs and even has a sunny spot and a scarf reserved just for her in case there is a chill in the air! We want to thank this lovely family for giving Ehu one more chance at finding her forever home. After 148 days in the shelter Ehu can now rest easy and bask in the love and devotion that she was hoping for! CODY & RICO Now live: Kihei Just like Peanut Butter and jelly belong together, so do Cody and Rico! These two boys hit the jack pot when it comes to Happy Endings. Cody first came to us in February when he was found wandering Kahakuloa all alone. With a scabbed up head, hair loss and possibly deaf, Cody was gonna need a special home. And boy did he find it with the Van Horn s! He was all healed up and handsome as can be in no time. Rico was brought to MHS in May when he was found in Wailuku. As soon as the Van Horn s laid eyes on Rico they knew he would the perfect best buddy for Cody. These pint-sized pals sure are perfect for each other and love to be together. Rico soon learned from Cody what tug of war is and how much fun it can be with a BFF. In return, Rico has become Cody s ears, alerting him any time they are called or it s time to go. Now the boys pals spend their days going on trips to the dog park and Petco with their favorite people on earth... Mom and Pop! 4
5 Volunteer Spotlight: Jenny Mida Volunteers are extremely valuable members of our Maui Humane Society ohana. They provide love, attention, and affection to our community s homeless pets. In addition to hands on work with the animals here at the shelter, our volunteers help in a myriad of ways. From gardening, to administrative assistance, foster care to fundraising and special events, we couldn t do all that we do without the help of our dedicated volunteers. A volunteer with MHS since March of 2012, Jenny Mida has made a huge impact on the lives of our adoptable canines. A lifelong dog lover, Jenny really wanted to help improve the quality of life for dogs in a shelter environment. With a lot of love and time to give, Jenny became one of our most dedicated dog walkers, averaging over 25 hours a month spent with the dogs here at Maui Humane Society. She said that the most rewarding part of being a volunteer is seeing the enjoyment the dogs get when they are out of their kennels, rolling in the grass, enjoying the breeze, and getting some snuggle time. But Jenny s enthusiasm doesn t stop at taking our dogs out for walks. An avid iphone photographer, Jenny gets great shots of our adorable dogs that she shares worldwide via Facebook and Instagram, spreading the word that a shelter dog is the best kind of dog there is. She has also become a fixture at First Friday Wailuku, heading up our booth selling tshirts, collecting donations, recruiting new volunteers, and being a great ambassador for MHS. As if that weren t enough, Jenny and her son Zander bring their passion for animals into their kitchen, making homemade peanut butter dog treats that are then sold at outreach and fundraising events around the island. The Mida ohana asked that all the money made from their baking efforts be donated to a fund close to their hearts, Wings of Aloha. By raising money for Wings of Aloha, they know they are helping more of Maui s homeless pets find a forever home via rescue organizations on the mainland. When we asked Jenny what she would tell someone who might be interested in volunteering, she had this to say: The staff & other volunteers are very supportive and friendly. Also, the animals are so grateful for anytime they can spend with you. It s a very rewarding experience for both you and the animal. Jenny is glad she became a member of the MHS family and we, and our dogs, are lucky to have her! For more information about volunteering at Maui Humane Society, please contact our Volunteer and Events Coordinator Corinne by calling (808) ext. 14 or ing Volunteer@MauiHumaneSociety.org. 5 MHS Volunteer Jenny socializes with shelter pup Annabelle. Ma-howl-o for Your Kokua! We would like to extend a heartfelt MA-HOWL-O to everyone who supported Team MHS for the 2013 Charity Walk! After briskly walking the 5K route proudly donning our MHS T-shirts, we enjoyed a delectable variety of food followed by great entertainment. But the real joy comes in announcing that we raised over $28,000! Not only did we greatly surpass our $17,000 goal, but we more than doubled last year s amount and we couldn t have done it without you! We would like to extend an extra special Mahalo to our top three fundraisers: Judy Aikawa, Gloria Chee, and Janie Kramer. Whether you made a donation, joined us for the walk, or simply helped us spread the good news about what MHS is doing to help homeless pets, we appreciate and thank you for your support. And we hope you ll continue your support for next year s Charity Walk on May 10, 2014!
