1 March 2011 WHAT S THE A-TRACK-TION by Suzanne Schwab, from ColliesOnline.com, February 2011 (Publisher s note: This seemed like a nice addition to Dog Daze considering this month s brags!...substitute your breed for Collie ) Even among dog-nerds, I often find it challenging to explain the appeal of training a dog to track. In 2009 for example, there were over 1.3 million entries in AKC conformation events, nearly 800,000 agility entries, over 13,000 herding entries, and not quite 2,000 tracking entries. In a typical year, perhaps five Collies will earn AKC tracking titles, compared to over 300 conformation championships. It s a pity, because those folks who are spending Saturday mornings sleeping in, instead of wandering around some soggy field in the drizzling rain, are missing some of the most satisfying experiences one can have training a dog. So, why should someone forgo the obvious pleasure of a nice cozy warm bed for an early morning excursion out into the field? For me, tracking is rivaled only by herding as a way to work in true partnership with my Collie friends. Don t get me wrong I thoroughly enjoy the precision and communication that is required to train a dog to be a successful and enthusiastic obedience competitor, and if I had the time, I d probably love agility too. But in both those activities, the humans are calling the shots, and hopefully they are skilled enough as trainers to convince the dog that he loves to follow his directions. Tracking is fundamentally different, because it s ultimately the dog who is going to tell the human where the track goes, and it is up to the human to obey the dog. Wine connoisseurs and professional perfume sniffers will attest to the fact that one s ability to detect and discriminate scent can be greatly enhanced with practice. So, part of training the tracking Maril and Spirit show their tracking dedication after the Pine Valley snow storm. dog does involve setting up increasingly difficult scenting challenges that actually do improve upon the dog s innate ability to detect and follow a scent trail. But dogs come out of the birth canal basically knowing how to follow scent. It is we, the trainers, who are essentially clueless about scent. So most of tracking training really involves communicating to the dog what it is we want him to do, and then motivating the dog to follow the scent we designate rather than us training the dog HOW to track. The dogs are the experts at that skill, and once we ve successfully communicated our goal, and motivated our dog to use his skills for our goals, we have to turn control over to the dog. It s surprisingly difficult for many trainers to take that last step, and learn to accept that eventually their role is to be the follower, rather than the leader. In conformation a savvy handler quickly sees whether the judge is going to ask for a down and back or a triangle, the obedience competitor watches the heeling pattern, the agility handler walks the course until the sequence of obstacles is memorized. And then, when their turn comes, the handler directs the dog, and the dog follows the directions. At some point in training a tracking dog, the handler approaches a flag that marks the start of a track, has the dog sniff the article dropped by the tracklayer at that start point, and then makes a leap of faith. The handler has to obey the dog. The dog knows where the scent is and the handler doesn t. So, how does the handler communicate the goal and establish the motivation for a dog to follow a complicated track? There are dozens of nuances that can t be covered in a single short article, but the basic principles are familiar to any good trainer. Start with ridiculously easy and highly rewarding tracks. In fact, what we start with barely seems like a track at all; it s just a trail of yummy treats a few dozen feet long with a bonanza of treats on some article dropped at the end. Initially all the dog is doing is learning that sniffing the ground leads to delicious rewards, and that pulling out ahead of the handler leads to more and bigger rewards. Gradually, very gradually, the track gets longer; the yummy treats are spaced farther apart, and eventually the track begins to bend and turn rather than always going straight ahead. The time between laying and running the track increases. Scenting challenges like changes in terrain and vegetation are added and roads, fences, rock outcrops, logs, and even streams are crossed. Other people walk over the track. For the truly dedicated tracking team, tracks will be laid in urban settings along well-traveled sidewalks, across parking lots, and around a variety of buildings that cause scent to swirl and shift and do all sorts of confusing and challenging things. It s a process that is very simple in concept, and infinitely challenging in actual practice. And it s a process that is well worth sacrificing a morning of sleeping in, both because the training itself is so rewarding, and because afterwards you ll know you ve truly earned lunch followed by an afternoon nap snuggled up with your tired and happy tracking Collie. 3 March 2011 Brags LOIS APFEL has been busy this past month! She sure did a wonderful job. Good going Lois and Neela! SWEETBAY S NEELA, TD, RN earned her TD (Tracking Dog) at the GSD Tracking Test January 26 at Barnett Ranch Preserve in Ramona. She ran her 475 yard track in style, stopping only to check out the coyote bed at the start and to turn around and give her handler a look as to say Can t you go any faster? It was a fun track with judges Sally Nesbitt and Robin Gruenwald, and Bob Long was her tracklayer. Neela also finished her Novice Rally title at San Diego Obedience Club trial on Friday, February 25, at Del Mar Fairgrounds. Her first two legs were at the Lab Specialty at Bates Nut Farm the week prior. Her scores varied from 90 to 95 with placements each trial, thanks to Rita Wolkiewicz s fine job of handling. CATHY COLLEY has special brags!! All at the same test too, not something that happens very often! At the American Chesapeake Club s AKC Tracking Test in Jamul, I had 2 passes, and 2 new titles, with my dogs! WINDY, GOLDEN RETRIEVER, earned her TD (Tracking Dog) title! Windy blazed through a 440 yard track, with 3 turns, in just 6 minutes. Windy never once strayed from the path of the track, and I was just there to hang on for the ride! SUMMER, GOLDEN RETRIEVER, at nearly 11 year old, earned her TDX (Tracking Dog Excellent) title. Summer s track was 820 yards long, with 6 turns, and hills and valleys to negotiate. Summer found all 3 of the lost articles, and did a beautiful steady job as she earned this, the last title of her wonderful career! I could not be happier with my dogs as they showed training and made me so proud. FF February Minutes The February 21 meeting (held at Marie Callender s Restaurant in La Mesa) was called to order at 7:14 p.m. by President David Smelser. Minutes as printed in Dog Daze were approved. Reports There was no Treasurer s report. SHOW N GO: Bruce Barnett reported that we made $ at the February Show n Go. TRAINING: David reported that we have a beginning class with ten people, and a puppy class of seven. There are more classes to be scheduled when this beginning class is over. There are possible CGC class and Rally classes slated for the future. If anyone is interested in either class, please let David know. UKC TRIAL: Audrey Austin reported the UKC trial is progressing nicely. The awards chairman, Cathy Colley, is working on the awards and will be ordering ribbons. Eleni Stevens is the workers chairman. She need volunteers. Old Business There is an egg hunt on April 16th. The Rec Center has requested ABOCI to give a dog demonstration. FF Q Cathy and Summer earn their TDX! 3

4 How Does UKC Rally Differ From AKC? By Audrey Austin I ve only gone over the Novice signs and the major differences in the judging and rules. More signs are different as you go to the higher levels. Some may be the same as AKC, but I thought they were worth mentioning. NOVICE SIGNS THAT DO NOT APPEAR IN AKC NOV- ICE. Halt Stand, Halt-Down-Sit, Halt 90 degree Right-Halt, 90 degree Right Forward. All the other signs are the same as AKC as far as I see. For the more advanced classes, the jump heights are 6 and 4 for veterans, 10 and 8, and 14 and 12. Under the general rules, I found some to be interesting. I think they may also be AKC rules, but worth sharing to jog memories, or they may be different. Exhibitors clothing should be neat and clean. Their apparel speaks to the respect they have for the sport, the event, and proceedings. Dogs should be clean, bathed, trimmed and brushed, if needed. Exhibitors should be cordial. (There are times we should be reminding some exhibitors of this rule. Temper, temper. ) Exhibitors should make an effort to help new exhibitors. (I think sometimes we get so caught up in our own competition, we forget to look out for the new exhibitor who could use a little help. GOSSIP. (Now we all know we shouldn t gossip anywhere, anytime. Now it is in black and white.) There is no restriction on the number of qualifying scores earned under one judge. (I m not sure about AKC s rule on this, but I also think it is a new one for UKC.) Here s a big difference that has handlers worried. LURING: Handlers must not coax or lure the dog into performing any exercise. Luring can be considered as any excessive body movements, such as the handler bending over (other than when placing a dog in the down position) or using his/her hand or arm directly in the dog s face, to guide a dog through an exercise. ( I asked a judge about this ruling as I was concerned about the difference from signals. She said if you take an air cookie from your lips and put in front of the dog s nose to make him move, that s luring. I think it must look excessive.) JUDGES CALL: Faults that result in an NQ Calling fault is permissible only when an exercise for a repeat attempt and a NQ performance is in question. (I think the judge is not required to call fault but it is so nice that they can when they do. If you attempt a sign and you will NQ, the judge can call fault and you can repeat it, even when you may not know you have NQed that sign.) ASKING FOR A RULING: The handler may ask the judge for a ruling only in certain situations where it is unclear to the handler whether or not the dog has successfully completed an exercise or segment of exercise. (I think you can ask the judge, if the dog s elbows are down or something like that. When at the next trial, ask the judge about this rule.) You can go to UKC s website and read all the rules and see all the signs with descriptions. I hope this is a little help. FF 4

5 Awards Information & More I have read this before and thought it was the perfect piece to put in this edition with the Awards information. We do get titles and are proud of our dogs and what they do for us. Our Awards Banquet is one way of telling members we are proud of them and what they have accomplished. I saw this article again in another newsletter. It jumped out at me and print me now. Audrey WHAT IS AN OBEDIENCE TITLE, REALLY? By Sandy Mowery, from Front & Finish Not just a brag, not just a stepping stone to a higher title, not just an adjunct to competitive scores, a title is a tribute to the dog that bears it, a way to honor the dog, an ultimate memorial. It will remain in the record and in the memory, for about as long as anything in this world can remain. And though the dog himself doesn t know or care that his achievements have been noted, a title says many things in the world of humans, where such things count. Yes, it s coming close to that time of year again! It s time to collect your information from 2010 to submit for All Breed award eligibility. Each year at the Awards Dinner, ABOCI presents Title Medallions to its members who have earned titles during the preceding calendar year and also awards engraved Perpetual Trophies (Plaques) for a wide variety of High Scoring achievements. Listed below are the different year-end Trophies offered by ABOCI. In order to receive any award, a person must be a member in good standing, which means you have no outstanding debts to the club, have attended at least two General Meetings during the year, and that you work at least two jobs during the year. (Having an office or a board member is one job. Working at any ABOCI show and go is another.) Plaques & Pins 1. New plaques are awarded, or alreadyawarded ones engraved, for any American (AKC, UKC, ASCA), foreign, or All American obedience title earned during These titles include OTCH, Dog World Awards, Tracking, Herding, Field, Earthdog Titles, and All American Titles. A title says your dog was intelligent, adaptable, and good natured. It says that your dog loved you enough to do the things that please you, however crazy they may have sometimes seemed. In addition, a title says that you love your dog. That you loved to spend time with him because he was a good dog and that you believed in him enough to give him yet another chance when he failed, and in the end your faith was justified. A title proves that your dog inspired you to that special relationship enjoyed by so 2. Pins are available for any American or foreign championship earned after an obedience title has been earned on that dog. 3. Pins and Plaques will also be awarded for any Flyball titles earned during Information Needed for Plaques & Pins: Your Name Registered Name of Dog Call Name of Dog Breed of Dog Title or Championship Earned Date of 3rd Leg or Final Points Perpetual Trophies Awarded Highest scoring purebred in Novice. Highest scoring purebred in Open (dog without a UD). Highest scoring purebred in Open (dog with a UD). Highest scoring purebred in Utility. Highest scoring All-American in Novice. Highest scoring All-American in Open (dog without a UD). Highest scoring All-American in Open (dog with a UD). 5 few, that in a world of disposable creatures, this dog with a title was greatly loved, and loved greatly in return. And when that dear short life is over, the title remains as a memorial of the finest kind, the best you can give to a deserving friend. Volumes of praise in one small set of initials after the name. An obedience title is nothing less than the true love and respect, given and received and recorded permanently. Highest scoring All-American in Utility. Highest scoring Non-AKC purebred in Novice. Highest scoring Non-AKC purebred in Open (dog without a UD). Highest scoring Non-AKC purebred in Open (dog with a UD). Highest scoring Non-AKC purebred in Utility. There are still rare breeds showing in obedience. This category includes all non-akc registration bodies, such as UKC, Mexican, Canadian, States. Highest Scoring AKC Dog of the Year. Highest Scoring All-American of the Year. Highest Scoring Non-AKC Purebred of the Year. How To Submit Perpetual High Score Trophies: 1. Submit 3 scores from trials and 2 backup scores (5 scores total). For AKC purebreds, these must be AKC trials (not Cycle events). Please take pity on your Trophy Chairperson and DO NOT submit any more than just your 5 HIGHEST SCORES! (continued on page 6

6 Awards Information (cont. from page 5) 2. Scores do not have to be from legs they can be earned after the title was finished, or can be from a combination of Open A and B if the dog is not yet a UD. 3. Scores must be from Special Memorial Trophies Memorial trophy in memory of OTCH O Tara Strike Up the Band, UDX, Vixen, for highest scoring dog of the year. (For members who don t know, this was established by Tina Mazza, a former member, for her very special dog.) How to Submit Scores: 1. Submit 3 scores with 2 back-up scores these scores must be from trials (not matches). 2. Scores must be from 2010 and must be from A classes (Novice A, Open A, Utility A) 3. Scores can be from legs or the extra shows after the 3rd leg. 4. Scores must be from the highest level the DOG has ever competed at the dog s first CD or the dog s first CDX or the dog s first UD. For example, if the dog has an Aussie CDX and then shows in Open A for an AKC CDX, the AKC scores will not count for this trophy! 5. If the dog earned a CD and a CDX in the same year, scores from both may be used, provided both the CD and CDX were the first of each title the dog ever earned, even if they are each from different registries. For example, if the dog earns an AKC CD and then earns a UKC CDX, both can count. But when the dog finishes its AKC CDX, those scores will not count, because the dog has already earned a title at the open level. This isn t really that confusing just use scores from your dog s first CD, first CDX, or first UD, if such titles are earned during Mike Neil Memorial High Score UKC Dog of the Year Trophy (Mike was a past President and very active in the club. He was instrumental in making the club UKC recognized, and died suddenly of a heart attack.) To be won only by ABOCI club members. All scores must be from UKC trials, all classes considered. All scores must be from the same class, novice A, open B etc. U-CD Z s Chase The Roses CD, WD, FDCH Memorial Trophy for High Scoring Dog completing an obedience title and a flyball title in the same year. Dedicated by Jacquelyn and Donna Duffau. Donna is Audrey s daughter who was very active in the club and moved north a few years ago. Rosey was their flyball/obedience dog. This trophy is for the dog who completes an obedience title and a flyball title in the same year. If more than one dog meets the criteria for this trophy, the winner will be decided by the average of their three obedience scores. The scores and obedience title may be awarded from AKC. UKC, or ASCA. If the dog earns an obedience title from a non-scored event (CGC, for example), and a flyball title and is the only dog completing the two titles, that dog shall be the winner of the award. Any dog who earns an obedience title form a scored event (i.e. Novice, Open, or Utility) shall have preference over a dog receiving a title from a non-scored event. Additional Awards Highest scoring dog within its breed in the nation (Delaney or Shuman system), 200 scores, and OTCH titles. Recognition of members (the human half of the team) who have been members of ABOCI for five or more years, in 5 year increments. So get your information together! Submit it even if your scores aren t high!! You never know...can t win unless you submit your scores! Who/Where/When? Submit the necessary information BEFORE APRIL 15th to Geri DiMeglio via (geridimeglio@yahoo.com) or call (858) (leave message). Those of you with last year s perpetual trophies or personal plaques for new engraving, need to return them at the March 21st meeting or contact Geri to arrange for dropoff for new engraving. Thanks to Cathy Colley for these Dog Daze member photo contributions! Keep them coming! 6
