1 Vox Voyageur Volume No. 29 Issue No. 4 September-October 2005 Saving For The Future By Ann Sunderman Our hope for the future is the ESSFTA Foundation DNA Bank, which is in the hands of Dr. Gary Johnson of the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Johnson and his staff are isolating DNA from blood, tissue, or frozen semen samples submitted by owners or breeders. A submission to the DNA Project requires 10 ccs of whole blood from dogs or older puppies, docked newborn tail tips, tissue samples collected during surgery or when the dog passes away, or from two straws of frozen semen. Sending in newborn tail tips is a very simple process and because the breeder is already paying for the docking procedure, any additional cost is very minimal. The banked DNA will be used to search for genetic markers for health problems in our breed such as PRA and epilepsy. In the future the uses for the banked DNA are limitless. As research techniques become more advanced, the possibilities exist for genetic markers for other health problems and even certain characteristics such as scenting ability or temperament. Samples from healthy dogs are just as important to the research as samples from dogs with documented health issues. The cost for submitting a DNA sample to the University of Missouri is $ The fee is collected by the ESSFTA Foundation and forwarded to Dr. Johnson for storage and processing of the samples. A short health form, a five generation pedigree, AKC or CKC registration number, and the owner s name and address must accompany the DNA submissions to the University of Missouri. There is also a short form that goes to the ESSFTA Foundation. If samples are submitted from a litter of puppies, a litter name for each puppy should be included with each sample. Once the puppies are registered, the information needs to be sent to the project to update each puppy s file. Any pertinent health information on dogs in the DNA Bank should be updated as needed with the project. Things such as OFA numbers, CERF numbers, any other health clearances or any health problems should be reported to the DNA Bank for inclusion in their studies. You may contact Dr. Johnson s DNA Bank and Project Coordinator, Liz Hansen at HansenL@missouri. edu, phone , or write to her at 209A Connaway Hall, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO The ESSFTA Web site, contains information on the DNA project and the necessary forms can be downloaded from there as well. Have you submitted samples from all of your Springers to the ESSFTA Foundation DNA Bank? Our breed s future is depending on it. Thank You! Thank you to everyone who donated all the lovely baskets for our Specialty Raffle. I m pleased to announce that we raised over $500 for the club. Also, a big thank you to Jo Magney George who Raffle-Sat so I could run my gals in obedience. You guys are the best! Thanks again. 4 Jake s Bout With Bloat By Jon Pidde My Springer, Jake McGee II SH UDX3 WDX NA NAJ, almost died on Wednesday, August 3. It was the first day of our camping trip at Wild River State Park. After setting up camp, we decided to take a short walk to the St. Croix River to let the dogs go for a swim. My wife Sandy, Jake, Benson (my new 13-week-old puppy) and I headed for the river. The temperature was over 90 so I made sure the two dogs were drinking enough water. With Jake running ahead and Benson trying to keep up, it was a pleasant afternoon. When we arrived at the river Jake jumped in and Benson followed. I was paying so much attention to the puppy, I didn t notice that Jake was in trouble. Sandy said he looked a little funny. He came out of the water and was sitting on a sandbar with a little foam in the corner of his mouth. I started checking him all over, and his abdomen was noticeably swollen. His belly was very warm to the touch. Facts About Bloat Since Jake s bout with Bloat, I have been doing a research on Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) also called Torsion or Bloat. With the help of Dr. Joe Spoo ( com) I have found out the following. GDV is more common in large, deep-chested breeds like Akita, Great Dane, German Shephard, Irish Setter and Weimaraners. GDV is more common in dogs that are fed once a day and eat very fast, perhaps drinking a lot of water after eating. GDV is more common in dogs that exercise a lot after eating. GDV is more common in dogs with a fearful temperament and/ or dogs that are under stress. Between 35% and 50% of dogs with Bloat do not recover. If GDV is caught early, and the dog walks into the clinic, survival increases to 85-90%. Jake s Gastric Detorsion is a success! Without the Gastropexy, 80% of the dogs have another episode of Bloat within a couple of days. The cause of Bloat remains unknown, but the sooner it is diagonsed and fixed, the better the survival rate. Jon Pidde He started stretching and trying to throw up. I didn t know if he had gotten into something when I wasn t looking. I was thinking poison, heat stroke or something else. We immediately headed back to camp and stopped at a water fountain. I tried to cool Jake off by running water over him and cooling off his belly. His belly was now swollen to the size of a basketball. When we got to the car he didn t wait for a lift into the car but just jumped right in. Jake was doing a lot of moaning, lying down and getting up. He just couldn t get comfortable. With Jake having the dry heaves and in great distress, we headed for North Branch. That 15-minute trip seamed to last forever. Benson s breeder lives about a mile out of town so we headed straight to her house. At 5:25 p.m. we called the nearest veterinarian, the North Branch Veterinary Hospital, and told them we were on our way. The veterinarian, Dr. Jacobs, diagnosed Jake with Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) also called Torsion or Bloat. Bloat is a condition when, for some reason, a dog s stomach twists, cutting off the input and exit of the stomach. Dr. Jacobs took a couple of X-rays to confirm his diagnosis and recommended immediate surgery. To make matters worse, he wanted me to sign a release to allow Jake to be euthanized if his stomach looked like it was dying. We waited for about a half hour until we were told that the Gastric Detorsion was a success. They said they would call our breeder in an hour or so when the Gastropexy and closing was finished. (Gastric Detorsion is where a surgeon opens up the dog and, after releasing the pressure, spins the stomach back where it belongs. Gastropexy is sewing the stomach to the side cavity so it can t spin again. While inside the dog, the surgeon also inspects the organs for signs of dying tissue.) After an hour and a half, we received word that the surgery was done, everything looked good, and we should come back the next day. By 2:00 p.m. the next day, Jake had started eating and drinking, and we were able to take him home. We had to put Jake on a bland diet, feeding him five or six times a day. It took Jake two days to start pooping; in other words his digestive system didn t shut down. Jake is recovering nicely and looks forward to kicking a little puppy s (Benson s) butt.

5 Announcements Francie Nelson has been elected to the Board of Trustees of The Alan Emeney Foundation, the equivalent of the ESSFTA Foundation in Great Britain. She is the only foreign citizen to be so honored, and is expected to serve as principal liaison officer between the Springer foundations of the United States and the United Kingdom. She will be returning to England in November for the Championship Show and to continue the developing partnership with the UK and its Springers. Congratulations Francie! The virus, which scientists say mutated from an influenza strain that affects horses, has killed racing greyhounds in seven states (Florida, Massachusetts, Arizona, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Texas and Iowa) and has been found in shelters and pet shops in many places, including the New York suburbs, though the extent of its spread is unknown. Dr. Cynda Crawford, an immunologist at the University of Florida s College of Veterinary Medicine who is studying the virus, said that it is spread most easily where dogs were housed together but that it could also be passed on the street, in dog runs or even by a human transferring it from one dog to another. Kennel workers have carried the virus home with them, she said. How many dogs die from the virus is unclear, but scientists said the fatality rate is more than 1 percent and could be as high as 10 percent among puppies and older dogs. Dr. Crawford said that because dogs had no natural immunity to the virus, virtually every animal exposed would be infected. About 80 percent of dogs that are infected with the virus will develop symptoms. She added that the symptoms were often mistaken for kennel cough, a common canine illness that is caused by the bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria. Dr. Crawford said she was fielding calls from kennels and veterinarians across the country worried that they were having outbreaks. The hysteria out there is unbelievable, and the misinformation is incredible, said Dr. Ann E. Hohenhaus, chief of medicine at the Animal Medical Center in New York. Dr. Hohenhaus said she had heard of an alert from a Virginia dog club reporting rumors that 10,000 show dogs had died. We don t believe that s true, she said, adding that no dogs in her Manhattan hospital even had coughs. Dr. Donis of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) said that there was currently no vaccine for the canine flu. But he said one would be relatively easy to develop. The canine flu is less lethal than parvovirus, which typically kills puppies but can be prevented by routine vaccination. Edited from an ESSFTA announcement. Written by Donald G. McNeil Jr. and Carin Rubenstein
