1 Post Pls Middlefield Post October 29, 2014 A Wild Goose Chase By Patrick and Lillian Robinson F rom the time I was a small child, I can remember going afield with my father to share in the heritage of hnting and fishing. As one can imagine, it became a big part of who I was and to this day is still something I enjoy every chance I get. Whether it be fishing a stream with a fly rod, chasing pland birds in dense forests, or searching ot local marshes for waterfowl with my pp Drake, the things my father shared with me at a yong age have remained an indelible part of who I am. Some might say, I cold never hnt, and I respect that, bt for me it isn t always abot the hnt as mch as it is abot the relationships that are fostered, the appreciation yo gain for God s creation, and the opportnity to withdraw from the hstle and bstle that consmes the average day. Now that I have a family of my own, I am passing this love for the otdoors and the appreciation for God s creation on to my own children. Here is a story of a recent adventre with my oldest daghter that I will cherish for years to come, bt don t take my word for it here is the story told from her perspective. I can still remember the first time I went hnting with my dad. The day started with the blaring sond of my alarm clock that jolted me to a foggy state of consciosness. As I rolled ot of bed and started to get dressed I came to the realization that this day cold actally be the one where I wold actally shoot a gn and harvest my first bird. My hands were shaking as I tried to contain the excitement that was overwhelming me. Soon we were loaded p and heading for the field, bt not before a stop at Maggie s to get fresh donts and chocolate milk. That is always part of the tradition with my Dad and one I like. Once back in the trck and headed ot of town, my Dad asked me if my heart was racing. To this day, I don t know whether it was the way I talked to him or that I was a tad bit antsy that he knew the answer. Bt, nevertheless he did. An hor or so passed and we were sitting in the dck blind. Dad asked if I wanted a face mask or face paint and I looked at him like, come on Dad, give me the good stff. So with face paint that wold make the Robertson s of Dck Dynasty fame jealos, I prepared for the hnt. With a gn in my hand the dcks came and went bt it wasn t long before my first shots rang ot. I tried my hardest and shot at almost everything that flew, bt mch to my disappointment, we didn t get anything that day. Despite the lack of dcks to take home, I did get to take with me one of the best experiences and memories I have. Fast forward a year... it was time to give it another go arond. I was excited and looking forward to that feeling of exhilaration again. As the day began, it was clear to me that this day wold have a slower pace. The beaty of the scenery arond s made p for the lack of birds thogh. The trees were jst beginning to change from a deep green to a crisp and lovely golden yellow. My Dad has always taght me that taking things for granted isn t an option; whether it be the leaves changing or simply being able to spend time with one another, he always tries to captre the moment. I appreciate that abot him and know that this is a great lesson that I can pass on to the next generation. As the mintes and hors ticked by, it finally came time for that big and mighty goose to fly my way. Yo see I was on my first goose hnt ever and I was very happy. The way I see it, they make for a bigger target and that mst mean they are easier to hit. I waited and watched throgh my small layot blind as all kinds of different birds came or way. A familiar sond of geese honking came from behind me and did so several times, and each time I wold ask my Dad making sre not to make too mch noise, Did yo hear that? Of corse he did, bt it was nice to be able to point them ot and work Lillian Robinson holding her first goose. on my hnting prowess. After several flocks, and jst as many failed attempts to sccessflly call them in, we finally caght the attention Contined on Page 3

(Post photo/nancy Hrivnak) Therapy Dog s Rags to Riches Story By Nancy Hrivnak A gentle black Labrador and golden retriever mix is left to fend for himself in the Tennessee town of Brentwood. He s tied otside at an abandoned hose with no food, water or caretaker. In typical canine Cinderella-story fashion, the yong mtt remains loving, receptive, trsting and obedient. A kind-hearted woman and her daghter bring him home and foster him. Arond Christmastime 2009, a Hntsbrg, Ohio, Baptist chrch member browses the web seeking to fill a golden retriever-sized hole in the heart cased by the passing of the family pet. Alan Graham, fll-time occpational therapy assistant at University Hospitals Geaga Medical Center, contacts Black Dog, Second Chance, a canine resce organization. That s the kind of gy Alan is. He seeks to adopt a dog that s down on his lck throgh no falt of his own. Alan sms p his otlook on life by qoting Albert Einstein: Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile. He talks to the resced Tennessee retriever s foster family. For those involved with dog resce, Black Dog Syndrome is a recognized phenomenon. Shelters nationwide report that black dogs are the last to be adopted and among the first to be ethanized - nless they happen to meet an Alan. Alan says he s always been interested in raising a therapy dog. Foster-mom in Tennessee says, I think this dog cold do that. The Grahams drive to Tennessee and bring Shawn home to Hntsbrg in Janary Even thogh Shawn is a retriever, playing fetch seems a brand new concept. Shawn adjsts to living indoors, apparently for the first time ever. Alan makes a casal inqiry abot certifying Shawn to be a therapy dog. He Dog Training for Family Dogs thinks Shawn and he need a formal training class. An observer says Alan and Shawn most likely can pass a behavior test already, based on their dog/handler interaction. Alan registers Shawn for a certification test at the Geaga Conty Fairgronds. He expects maybe eight dogs and a tester to meet them there. Instead, Alan and Shawn walk into a fairgronds-wide dog show. They find the testing ring and learn that Shawn will be the last and 19th candidate to test there that day. We had to sit there all day and watch 18 dogs test and 18 dogs fail. Finally it was Shawn s trn. He entered the ring, trned a I ve-got-this glance toward the rest of the field, and passed on his first try, Alan recalls. Soon after, Shawn and Alan help lanch University Hospitals Geaga Medical Center s (UHGMC) Pet Pals program. Shawn s ftre as a philanthropist flows natrally from life with the Grahams. Alan and family are committed to relationship bilding and making a positive impact in their corner of the world. He volnteers for The Arthritis Fondation, the Geaga Conty prison ministry, Hnstbrg Baptist Chrch adlt and men s bible fellowship programs and teen and commnity ministries. Working with University Hospitals Case Medical Center s main camps personnel, Alan and colleages at Geaga s branch begin an official Pet Pal program that allows trained volnteers and their adlt certified therapy dogs to make short, in-room visits to consenting patients. 3 Contined from page 1 of a smaller flock of abot twenty birds. It qickly hit me that this cold be the moment. My Dad was calling to the geese, and soon he had the geese circling and on approach. They circled in behind s, intently looking over or decoy spread for any sign of danger. As they circled, my Dad contined to lre them with the call and they banked off the near tree line. It was amazing - they were doing exactly what my Dad said they wold. Within mere seconds, the whole flock locked their wings and pt their feet down. That s when everything seemed to go into slow motion. No more than 10 feet off the grond, I knew they were past the point of no retrn. I watched as they dropped those last few feet and anxiosly waited for my Dad s command. My hands were shaking as sal and my heart was beating faster than it ever has. I was ready; everything was in place and jst as the first birds were abot to toch the grond, my Dad s voice broke the silence. Take em, he shoted. In an instant, I exploded ot of my small camoflage blind hidden in the field and the shots began to sond, one after another. I aimed at the goose in By Joe Novak Every company has a go-to-gy or at least they shold. This is the gy who can solve almost any problem and big companies shold have one in every major department. I have often said: The smartest man or women can t possibly know everything, they do however know who to call and there lies the genis! Not everyone has got the talent to be a go-to-gy or girl; however, the skills can be learned and perfected throgh hard work and stdy. Being extremely knowledgeable in yor field and being able to articlate this knowledge can propel yor career to new heights. If yo are often called pon to solve problems, then it is likely yor name will also show p on the promotion list. When I hired Jason to sweep floors in my shop, it never occrred to me that within three years he wold be plant manager and an intricate part of the team. He took it pon himself to learn how to program the CNC (compter nmerically controlled) eqipment and when the programmer working in that position tried to extort an nreasonable salary increase, (gronds for dismissal), Jason got the promotion and a hefty increase in pay. Ot of my 10 employees, five were go-to-gys, each with their own specific talents and expertise. I always believed in the hire and pay for the extraordinary talent theory and it paid off big-time! One extraordinary employee brings along the following: he or she sets an example for the other employees, works overtime to finish a critical task withot being asked, shares their knowledge with the others, has a great and positive work ethic and solves problems! Where do yo find these people? Get the word ot that yo are hiring among bsiness associates, family and friends. The geese began to drop as shots fond their mark and when the shooting was done, we had three birds dead on the grond, and one was mine. I was so excited that I cold barely contain it. I coldn t wait to show off my prize goose to the world. I made sre to have my Dad take as many pictres as possible. Even thogh it was only mere seconds from start to finish, it felt like a lifetime of fn. Most people wold say time flies when yo are having fn, bt this day felt like it lasted forever. I can t believe the fn I have when I m ot on the open field and I can t wait for the next time to come when I get to pt my face paint on and give it another try. This experience is a great way to bild a bond between a father and daghter, and I always appreciate the time spent with my family and friends. I strongly sggest yo get ot there and join the fn. When yo do find an exceptional employee; treat them well with small pay increases on a reglar basis and a pat on the back with a thank yo and a job well done acknowledgement. The nmber one reason people stay at a job; becase they feel appreciated. Note: All employees shold be signing a non-compete clase as a condition of hire. An extremely smart and motivated employee cold someday be motivated enogh to be yor competition. Talk with yor legal consel abot a contract that works for yor particlar sitation. If yo are working for an employer who treats yo like road apples; start preparing today to be his competition in the near ftre. Stealing his proprietary information is highly discoraged, developing a better prodct or offering better service is a better road to take. Competing ot of spite is also discoraged. Here again, conslt legal consel far in advance to yor leaving, shortly after yo have made a decision to compete, not after yo walk ot the door and end p in a lawsit. Keep in mind that if yor employer takes yo to cort, he does not need to get a jdgment against yo to be the winner; he only needs to bankrpt yo with attorney fees. If yo develop the better mosetrap at work, yor employer may have a right to ownership. Note: Never bad moth a former employer or employee nder any circmstance. My bones immediately reacted and began to creak, bt I was determined not to miss this chance, so I made sre I took along my pain pill. I knew my energy level wold never come close to matching theirs and I wondered how I wold ever climb p into the hay wagon. I pshed those fears aside and agreed to go. I looked p the meaning of making hay and it says; If yo make hay while the sn shines, it means that yo take advantage of the chance to do something while conditions are good. In other words, yo make good se of yor time or make the most of an opportnity while yo have a chance. Making hay with my great grandsons seemed to be a great opportnity to spend qality time with those precios little gys. We ventred ot to the farm with great excitement. Then I saw the hge hay wagon and wondered how I cold get my arthritic legs to work well enogh to get p. I sppose I made qite a sight as I strggled to get my foot p on the trailer hitch and then crawl on my knees over to the hay bales to sit. I know I looked qite comical as I saw Renee laghing so hard she cold hardly hold the camera still. Yes, she dared to snap some pictres of her mother crawling to the bales of hay hoping to restore her dignity. We had some good laghs after that show. We rode ot to the pmpkin patch where each child cold select his or her own pmpkin. It was windy and cold and the bmpy grond cased the wagon to toss s arond like rag dolls, bt it didn t matter. It was an opportnity to spend the day with loved ones; a day that I wold always remember and one I hoped wold be special for them. We followed p the ride with play time in the barn where the kids (with never ending energy I might add) ran throgh a maze, screamed inside the little hanted hose, filled p bckets with soy beans in the hge sand box and enjoyed another ride on individal wagons linked together and plled by a lawn mower. I passed on that opportnity becase I knew if I wedged myself inside the tiny area in the wagon they wold need the jaws of life to get me ot. I read somewhere, and I paraphrase, A relationship is like a bank transaction. Yo have to make a deposit to receive any interest. Well, I am happy to say I made the deposit and I definitely received the interest. Love yo River, Caden and Milo. The developing brain of a child constantly makes and breaks synaptic connections the learning process. This translates to mean that the brain is moldable or plastic! The faster a person can make and break connections and the more connections in a short period of time eqates to a greater learning potential and a more lively and vigoros life. Children have a high rate of neral plasticity, meaning they readily make and break synapses and have high energy levels. Adlts maintain a lower rate of neral plasticity. Adlts resist making and breaking new memories. To keep a memory, it is necessary to reinforce the circit by making a synapse larger and sending ot branches to other neral circits to connect with them. Resistance to making and breaking neral connections is natral when a person wants to retain feelings of love and hate. Reinforced synapses represent profond memory and breaking them to make room for new synapses is more difficlt and takes more time. Hence, it is more painfl when an adlt loses a loved one or tries to forgive their anger against an enemy (even if the enemy is dead) becase that memory is strongly reinforced with many large deep-rooted interconnections. Age brings experience the ability to qickly process standard events (common sense). Age also brings loss of vitality becase of low neral plasticity. Maintaining old memories takes a lot of energy, literal energy perhaps more energy than it takes to make or break new synapses, which are very small and not very interconnected. Yoth (high plasticity) have difficlty with common sense which comes from reinforced (low plasticity) memory. Yet, the ntrained yoth discover and invent things that experienced adlts can t becase it goes against trained memory. Adlts focs on what we can t do! Yoth boldly do what adlts won t do. Neral Plasticity The kicker is an adlt is anyone over age 26. The frontal lobes of the brain, which relate to personality, are the last part of the brain to matre. Once matre, neral plasticity decreases. Car insrance rates go down at age 26 becase a stable personality is less prone to bold driving and accidents. Alcohol disconnects synapses reslting in artificially increased neral plasticity, less common sense, and more accidents. Forgiveness has nothing to do with the person forgiven. Tre forgiveness is an intentional breaking of synapses, increasing the neral plasticity of the forgiver. This redces anger synapses, allowing the forgiver to make new synapses, perhaps for love. I cannot change yor synapses throgh forgiveness; I can change only my own synapses by forgiving. The greater the ability to make and break synapses, the greater the neral plasticity, and the more lively the person. Tre forgiveness brings healing by raising neral plasticity, which breaks anger memory and hopeflly makes new synapses for love and/or healing. False forgiveness lowers neral plasticity, which retains what one already has: love, anger, illness! Fortnately research indicates adlts are capable of making and breaking synapses, perhaps not as readily as children, bt certainly more than what they crrently do. Hence the games that make the brain form new synapses and break old ones. Some do not like what I write. They resist breaking old synapses low neral plasticity. I readily make and break synapses based on the qality research and evidence high neral plasticity. I am prone to correcting my errors and enjoying a vigoros healthy life. People with low neral plasticity cling to errors, fight research, resist change, and have rich vibrant memories. New memories are fn; old memories (love, hate, illness) are fond. The choice is yors. Oh, not too bad I m jst so bsy these days! Seems like I never have time for anything these days bt work and rnning the kids arond, Bob replied. Sond familiar to anyone? Sre it does! That scenario is played ot daily in conversations all across the area. Or world seems to be accelerating to blistering speeds with each passing day. What once was a society fll of single income families with an evening meal arond the dinner table each night has now become a society where Mom and Dad both work, microwaves are bzzing, family meals are few and far between and we all hope for a reprieve sometime soon so we can stop and breathe. Schedles can be insanely bsy at times; stdents are bsier than ever, and the workplaces seem to be reqiring more of their employees with each passing day. I hear conversations abot sch topics all the time and people often reminisce abot the slower days of the past. As I find myself a part of these conversations and even identifying with the bsyness of my own life, I realize there is something we mst be very carefl to consider. With all the bsyness that life has become, the qestion that I am plaged by is this: are we making time for others? Very simply, are we making time for others - to serve others - to give what God has blessed s with? I don t know abot yo, bt there are times when my schedle gets to a point that I don t think abot anybody bt me. What do I need to accomplish, what s on my list of things to do, what can I accomplish in those few precios hors that will make me feel good? All of these things are what rn throgh my head and it makes me realize how selfishly focsed we can become if we aren t carefl. With those thoghts in mind and in light of the qestion, Are we making time for others, I have conclded that if I am not carefl, life can easily become all abot me. As I write those words, I can t help bt think of the saying I ve heard spoken in the past that says, A man wrapped p in himself makes for a very small package. Better yet, I am reminded of the spreme wisdom and example that gides me, challenges me, and hopeflly keeps me from being too inwardly focsed and selfish. Jess said in the book of Matthew 20:26-28, Whoever Isabel Karasek pitching in to help on Go Day. wants to be great mst become a servant. Whoever wants to be first among yo mst be yor slave. That is what the Son of Man has done: He came to serve, not to be served - and then to give away his life in exchange for the many who are held hostage. On Oct. 17 and 18, I was privileged to work alongside many people in this commnity who were intentionally p s h i n g back on the bsyness of life and came ot to serve others. These people helped r e m i n d me of the importance of making time for others. They were people striving to be Christ-like to many in or commnities who were and are in need. They are trly inspiring people for whom I thank God! For the seventh year in a row, people from as many as nine area chrches mobilized to go forth and be servants to those in need. With more than 20 teams and over 40 service opportnities, the people mobilized and were sent ot. Go Day as it is called is an intentional opportnity for those in or commnity to go and serve others as Christ wold. Whether it be serving the elderly, helping those in the midst of crisis, or coming alongside a single parent who doesn t have enogh time to get it all done, Go Day participants are willing to serve in any capacity, and they do. This year hndreds of people participated in the Go Day campaign that started Friday evening, Oct. 17 with service projects and ended midday Snday with a celebration worship service that blended nmeros local chrch congregations and saw as many as 500 pls people come to worship and celebrate that we cold be a part of helping others in or commnity. This year, gtters were cleaned, yards were cleaned, weeds were plled, plmbing was fixed, firewood was ct for the coming winter, lawns were mowed, bshes were trimmed, and for each job and person we were able to serve, we give thanks. Thank yo for reminding s that it is a blessing to serve. Thank yo for allowing s to come ot, to serve, and to be blessed. Or prayer is that yo were blessed too! If yo are interested in ftre Go Day campaigns, look for ftre information that will come ot September We hope to see many of yo join s as we mobilize and remember once again that it is a blessing to go and serve!

11 faith In Memoriam Frank Samel By Tracy Jemison, president Geaga Growth Partnership By Bob Miller Jr. Local volnteers prepare and can meat in the Mobile Meat Cannery. Canning for the Global Family Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist chrches that share God s love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic hman needs and working for peace and jstice all over the globe. They work as a global family to provide relief, food, water, health, edcation, migration, peace and restorative jstice. M e a t canning helps provide ntritios food for people in Canada, the United States and arond the globe. Canning is done in Ohio, Kansas, Nebraska, Soth Dakota, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Missori, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, Manitoba and Ontario. Each year since 1946, MCC has sent ot a mobile meat cannery, which workers and volnteers se to preserve hndreds of thosands of cans of meat for commnities in need across the globe. From October to April each year, the MCC Mobile Meat Cannery is managed by a for-man canning crew. The crew provides oversight to the canning operation and works alongside local canning committees and volnteers to can trkey, beef and pork. MCC s Mobile Cannery prodces some 1 million ponds of canned meat annally. It is with great sadness that we mst inform the commnity that Frank Samel, fonding exective director of the Geaga Growth Partnership was killed Monday afternoon, Oct. 20, in a car crash on Rapids Road in Brton. Words cannot begin to say how Frank will be missed. We wold not have an organization of the caliber of the GGP had it not been for Frank s leadership and determination. Frank was a visionary who always had the commnity s best interests in mind. Whatever he set his sights on, he accomplished. Frank was the Exective Director of GGP for its first three years, helping to bild the organization with the assistance and spport of the fonding members. The Geaga Growth Partnership, nder his leadership, advocated for bsiness, entrepreners and workforce development, among other initiatives. In November 2013, he stepped down to become President of Colmbs-based VentreOhio, Inc. a trade association focsed on financing and bilding a strong entreprenerial commnity who wold have resorces available to them throghot all stages of development and growth. He served as Science and Frank Samel Technology Advisor to the Governor of Ohio from 2000 to 2007, when he was a principal architect of Ohio s Third Frontier Project. Frank also served on several advisory concils and boards. A gradate of Hiram College and Harvard Law School, his paper recommending a ventre capital strategy for the Great Lakes region was pblished in 2010 by The Brookings Instittion in Washington, D.C. Frank was presented the first Frank Samel Distingished Service Award by Board Chairman John Epprecht at the Growth Partnership annal meeting in Jne, honoring him for his years of service and his contribtions. His memory will live on, as we lost a great man and good friend. Or thoghts and prayers are with his wife, Jacqeline, and his children at this time. The Samel family has annonced that a pblic memorial service will be held for Frank on Snday, Nov. 2, 2 p.m. at the Kent State University - Geaga camps, Claridon Troy Road, Brton, Ohio.
