1 Douglas County Fair 4-H Livestock Skill-a-Thon Contest The 4-H Livestock Skill-a-thon contest is an event that test a 4-H members knowledge and comprehension of animal science and livestock management practices. The 4-H Livestock Skill-a-thon contest will consist of a system of questions relative to the livestock project areas of beef, swine, sheep and goats. Junior, intermediate and senior members will have the same contest topics, however the actual questions may vary depending on age level. Participants will rotate through six stations answering questions to the following topics: Meats: Meats Page: * Contestant will identify various cuts of meat from each species. Level III and IV should also identify and label the cut by species. The link above can assist in meats identification. Breed Identification: Breeds: * The contestant must be able to identify various breeds of each species. Level III and IV should know the origin of each breed. The link above can assist in breed and origin identification. External Parts: * The contestant must be able to identify a given number of external parts of each species. Quality Assurance: * Level I and II contestants should be able to read a health product label and answer questions about it. Level III and IV contestants should also be able to answer general quality assurance questions regarding dosage rates, withdrawal times, administration routes, animal identification and restraint methods, animal care, etc. Feed and Nutrition: * The contestant should be able to identify common feed stuffs. Level III and IV should be able to tell what nutrient group the feed stuff belongs with. Equipment Identification: * The contestant must be able to identify common equipment used in the livestock industry. Questions? Contact Kaitlyn, Roberta or Nickie at
2 Class 1 - External Parts-The contestant must be able to identify a given number of external parts of each species. Level I and II should label any five (5) parts of their chosen specie. Points: 5 points per part 25 total points Level III should label ten (10) of the 25+ parts of a pre-selected specie(s). Points: 2.5 points per part 25 total points Level IV should label 25 of the 25+ parts of a pre-selected specie(s). Points: 1 point per part 25 total points

4 Class 2 - Equipment Identification- The contestant must be able to identify common equipment used in the livestock industry. Level III and IV should be able to give the typical use for that piece of equipment. Level I and II should identify any five (5) pieces of equipment. Points: Five (5) points per part - Total of 25 points Level III and IV should identify five (5) pieces of equipment and label the use of the piece of equipment. Points: 2.5 points per piece of equipment 2.5 points per use of equipment - Total of 25 points Possible Equipment may include but not limited to: Balling gun Bottle Calf weigh tape Ear tag gun Feed pan Feed scoop Dehorner (barnes or scoop) Tattoo kit AI gun Fly spray OB chain OB handle Syringe needles Shoulder glove Clippers Ear tags Rope halter Wash brush Possible uses include: Identification Animal Health Breeding/Reproduction General Management Showing
5 Class 3 - Breed Identification - The contestant must be able to identify various breeds of each species. Level III and IV should know the origin of each breed. Level I and II should identify five (5) breeds of any of the four (4) livestock specie(s). Points: Five (5) points per answer 25 total points Level III and IV should identify five (5) breeds and descriptions of any of the four (4) livestock specie(s). Points: Five (5) points per correct answer - 25 total points If level III and/or IV contestant misses the breed or description, they will receive half credit. (2.5 points) Possible Breeds may include, but not limited to: Beef Cattle Goats Sheep Swine Angus Alpine Cheviot Berkshire Brahman Boer Columbia Chester White Brangus Kiko Corriedale Duroc Charolais Lamancha Dorper Hampshire Chianina Nubian Dorset Hereford Gelbvieh Oberhasli Finnsheep Landrace Hereford Pygmy Hampshire Pietrain Limousin Saanen Katahdin Poland China Maine Anjou Spanish Merino Spotted Polled Hereford Toggenburg Montadale Tamworth Red Angus Tennessee Fainting Oxford Yorkshire Red Poll American Cashmere Polled Dorset Santa Gertrudis Rambouillet Shorthorn Romney Simmental Southdown Tarentaise Suffolk White Dorper
6 Class 4 - Quality Assurance Level I and II contestants should be able to read a health product label and answer questions about it. Level III and IV contestants should also be able to answer general quality assurance questions regarding dosage rates, withdrawal times, administration routes, animal identification and restraint methods, animal care, etc. Level I and II should identify and label five (5) tags on the medication label. Points: Five (5) points per tag - 25 total points Level III and IV should identify Points: Five (5) points per correct answer - 25 total points Quality Assurance Example Topics: Food Safety Animal Identification, Animal Health, Herd Health, Consumer Education, Food Quality/Production, etc. Animal Well-Being Animal Care, Daily Animal Care, Animal Handling, Record Keeping, etc. Character/Life Skills Basics of Animal Behavior, Show Ring Ethics, Environmental Stewardship, Careers in Animal Agriculture, etc. You may go to for more details.
7 Class 5 Meat Cut Identification - The contestant should identify various retail cuts of meat from each species. Level III and IV should also identify and label the cut by species. Level I and II should identify and label five (5) cuts of meat. Points: Five (5) points per meat cut 25 total points Level III and IV should label five (5) cuts of retail meat and identify the species of cut. Points: Five (5) points per meat cut/species 25 total points If level III and/or IV contestant misses the retail cut or species of cut, they will receive half credit. (2.5) Possible Retail Meat Cuts may include, but not limited to: Beef Retail Meat Cuts Lamb Retail Meat Cuts Ribeye Steak Sirloin Chop Arm Steak Rib Roast T-bone Steak Shoulder Square Cut Flank Steak Pork Retail Meat Cuts Fresh Ham Shank Portion Loin Chop Arm Picnic Roast Blade Chop
8 Class 6 - Feed and Nutrition - The contestant should be able to identify common feed stuffs. Level III and IV should be able to tell what nutrient group the feed stuff belongs with. Level I and II should identify five (5) feed stuffs. Points: Five (5) points per answer 25 total points Level III and IV should identify five (5) feed stuffs and nutrient group. Points: Five (5) points per correct answer - 25 total points If level III and/or IV contestant miss the feed or nutrient group, they will receive half credit (2.5 points). *This station will be timed. The time it takes you to complete this station will be used as a tie breaker.
