5 Brahman Beef Cattle Color: light grey Origin: India to red to close to black Characteristics: big floppy ears, loose dewlap, hump, most are horned Uses: beef, resistant to insects, tolerant to heat

6 Simmental Beef Cattle Origin: dates back to the Middle ages; Color: brown and white Simmental, Switzerland Uses: can be pet-like, rapidly growing Characteristics: larger framed, no set color pattern, polled

7 Shorthorn Beef Cattle Origin: Northern England Color: white, roan, Characteristics: and red moderate frame, horned Uses: well known for their beef; originally bred for meat and milk

9 Gelbvieh Beef Cattle Characteristics: polled or horned, medium sized, good carcass, good milk Origin: Bavaria, Germany Uses: meat Color: brown, can also be black; normally a reddish-yellow

10 Limousin Beef Cattle Uses: lean meat Characteristics: polled Color: rich gold color with white circles around the eyes and muzzle; reddish brown with yellow hairs Origin: France

11 Texas Longhorn Beef Cattle Origin: Spanish cattle descent Characteristics: long horns, average weight and height, thrive in subtropical environments Color: color varies Uses: lean meat, decoration

12 Holstein Dairy Cattle Origin: Netherlands Color: black and white or black and red Uses: milk, can also be used for meat Characteristics: black and white markings, largest framed dairy cattle

13 Jersey Dairy Cattle Origin: Isle of Jersey, off the coast of France Color: light gray or mouse color to a very dark fawn or a shade that is almost black Uses: milk is high in butter fat Characteristics: get injured easily, smallest in size, produce 13 times their body weight

14 Ayrshire Dairy Cattle Origin: Ayr, Color: white bodies with cherry red spots Scotland Characteristics: horned, but usually dehorned as calves Uses: milk production

15 Guernsey Dairy Cattle Characteristics: most are horned, golden milk color, 2nd most registered cattle Uses: milk Origin: Isle of Guernsey, off the coast of France Color: fawn to red color with white markings

16 Brown Swiss Dairy Cattle Characteristics: oldest dairy breed, live the longest, high heat tolerance, produce 2nd most amount of milk, developed dark blue eyes to block solar radiation Uses: milk Color: gray to Origin: Switzerland light brown color with black points

17 American Landrace Swine Color: white Origin: New Zealand Characteristics: mediumlarge body size, droopy ears, health is not that good, eat a lot of food, arched back Uses: good for meat, good mothering abilities

18 Duroc Swine Characteristics: droopy ears, known for genetics, high growth rate Uses: meat Origin: New York and New Jersey cross Color: red

19 Hampshire Swine Characteristics: white belt covering the front legs and feet, erect ears, large in size, lean meat, heavily muscled, 4th most registered breed in the US Uses: used as the sire of cross bred pigs for the pork & manufacturing markets in the US and other countries Origin: southern Scotland and Northern England Color: black with a white belt

20 Yorkshire Swine Origin: Yorkshire, England Color: white Characteristics: straight back, erect ears, noted for good mothering, long body Uses: meat

21 Poland China Swine Origin: Ohio, USA in Warren county Color: normally black in color, with 6 white patches on their feet and face Characteristics: 48 teeth when full grown; 28 fall out at 12 months old, medium to large in size, floppy ears, gain weight easily, piglets in a liter, oldest breed of swine to have originated in US, life span is 6-10 years Uses: bred for size & good travelers, meat

22 Spotted Swine Origin: Indiana, USA Uses: high quality meat Color: mostly white in color Characteristics: good feeders, mature early, erect ears

23 Tamworth Swine Color: red- brown color Characteristics: long heads; long, lean, and athletic, legs are long and strong, erect ears Origin: central England one of the oldest pure breeds of swine around Uses: produces the best bacon, endangered of being extinct walk long distances, sows and piglets live together in groups called sounders, boars live in groups called bachelor long snouts, efficient foragers, don t get sunburnt easily

24 Berkshire Swine Uses: used for meat such as tender loin, genetic purity, good eating quality Origin: dates back to 1600s; County Berkshire in southern England Characteristics: erect ears, short neck, short blocky legs, strong feet, firm body, upturned nose, muscular Color: black with white points (legs, face,tail)

25 Chester White Swine Origin: Chester county, PA Color: white Uses: only used for meat; produces more meat than other swine Characteristics: droopy ears, noted for mothering ability

26 White Leghorn Poultry Color: white plumage, egg shell color is white Origin: Italy Characteristics: small in size Use: laying eggs

27 Rhode Island Red Poultry Origin: Massachusetts and Rhode Island Color: skin color is yellow, egg shell color is brown, dark red plumage Characteristics: males are aggressive, probably the best egg layers of the dual purpose breeds, long bodies Uses: dual-purpose for meat and laying eggs, laying per year

28 New Hampshire Poultry Origin: Massachusetts and New Hampshire Use: a dual purpose chicken, selected more for meat than egg production Color: red plumage, yellow skin color, egg shell color is brown, pinfeathers are a reddish color medium to light red Characteristics: deep, broad body; feathers grow rapidly; prone to go broody and make good mothers

29 Plymouth Rock Poultry Origin: America Color: skin color is yellow, egg shell color is brown, white plumage Characteristics: usually good mothers, docile, good general farm chicken, long broad back, deep full breast, tame quite easily Uses: lays eggs

30 Broad Breasted White Turkey Color: white plumage, white pinfeathers Origin: White Holland and Broad Breasted Bronze cross Uses: meat Characteristics: shanks, feet, and beak is white to pink; pinfeathers increases value of carcass survive better in hotter climates; good body conformation but smaller than other breeds

31 Broad Breasted Bronze Turkey Use: meat Origin: North America Color: black plumage, dark colored pinfeathers, largest of the turkey varieties Characteristics: males are not good breeders, poor fertility and reproduction problems
