The purpose of the Show and Sale is to encourage higher quality livestock and to provide a learning experience about feeding and showing livestock for the youth of Bryan County, thus providing valuable training in sportsmanship and fair play that will make better citizens. 2

4 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27 TH Awards Premium Sale 6:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m. General Information and rules for exhibitors EXHIBITORS: Must be a member of a Bryan County FFA or 4-H Chapter and enrolled in school. Exhibitors must be 9 years old by January 1 of the current show year to be eligible to show in the Bryan County Junior Livestock Show. Any decisions related to the eligibility of an individual to exhibit an animal or participate in the Bryan County Junior Livestock Show will be made by the Arbitration Committee and all decisions are final. Each exhibitor will show their own animals, if at all possible. Exhibitors are responsible for their animal(s) until removed from the fairgrounds. Animals must be halter broken and under the owners control when shown. If animals are not being shown by owner, it must be reported to and approved by the show superintendent prior to showing of animal. OWNERSHIP: All exhibitors are required to be the sole owner, be in possession of their animals, and have a paid entry card completed no later than December 15 of each year. Animals must have official Bryan County tag or OYE tag in the ear and ear notch for swine. Proof of ownership may be requested. HOUSEHOLD NOMINATIONS: Students will be allowed to enter and show any animal that was nominated by an individual from their household according to the following restrictions: The students must all legally reside in the same household and share the same legal address. The student who is entering the animal must have materially participated in the care of the project. Regarding students eligibility, if a student is declared ineligible, any animal entered in that exhibitor s name shall be ineligible for exhibition at the Bryan County Junior Livestock Show. ENTRY FEE: An entry fee of $20.00 per head will be paid at the time of nomination. $5.00 of the entry will be applied to the scholarship fund. Exhibitors should make any final changes to the entry card at least 5 working days prior to the show. Changes should be submitted to the OSU Extension Office in writing. PROTESTS: The Superintendent will decide at weigh-in if the animal has been entered in the proper class. Any public protest must be written and presented to the Superintendent with a $100 deposit one hour prior to the show time of the affected species. If the written protest is upheld by the Arbitration Committee, the deposit will be returned. If protest found to be invalid, deposit will be forfeited. THE DECISION OF THE ARBITRATION COMMITTEE WILL BE FINAL. ARBITRATION COMMITTEE: The bylaws will stipulate the Arbitration Committee and who serves on the committee. 4

5 CARE OF STALLS AND PENS: Exhibitors must keep stalls and alleys cleaned and waste removed at all times. Use of straw as bedding material is prohibited. No bedding material may be used inside the rock barn. By order of the Fair Board no heat lamps or other type heating devices will be allowed. No one will be allowed to stay at the fairgrounds during the night. A night watchman will be on duty from 10:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. Friday through Sunday nights to protect the livestock exhibits. RELEASE TIME: Each species may be released after and Raised of that species has been shown. Premium sale animals must be back on grounds by 4:00 p.m. Monday afternoon of the premium sale. CODE OF ETHICS: Following is the code of ethics to be enforced at this Show. Any violation should be reported to the Show Superintendents or Chairman immediately. Proven rule violations will result in barring/disqualification actions. A. Administration of a drug of any kind or description, internally or externally prior to entering the Show ring, except for the treating a recognized disease or injury. For the purpose of these rules, the term drug shall mean any substance, the sale, possession or use of which is controlled by license under federal, state or local laws or regulations and any substance commonly used by the medical or veterinary professions which affect he circulatory, respiratory or central nervous system of an animal to include diuretics. The use of any diuretic for any purpose whatsoever on any animal in the Show is prohibited. All animals will be subject to test for diuretics. B. The use of the following materials will not be permitted: Swine: Paint, powder, dye, white wash, oil or other coat dressings. (Water only allowed) Sheep: Artificial coloring, paint or powder. Beef: Change of the natural hair coloring added hair or other added material whether natural or man-made (excluding false switches) will not be permitted in grooming. All cattle will be subject to the white cloth test. No adhesives will be allowed. C. Treating or massaging any part of the body internally or externally with an irritant, counter irritant, or other substance to temporarily straighten a weak back or loin or produce unnatural animation. D. Minimizing the effect of crampiness by feeding or injecting drugs, depressants or applying packs or using any artificial contrivance or therapeutic treatment except normal exercise. E. Surgery of any kind performed to change the natural contour or appearance of the animals body or hide. F. Insertion of foreign material under the skin. G. The use of alcoholic beverages in the feed or administration as a drench. H. Criticizing or interfering with the judge, exhibitors, classifiers, breed committees, sifting committee, weight committees and other conduct detrimental to the breed or Show. I. Any attempt to misrepresent or falsify the ownership, age, weight, weight gain or parentage of an animal. 5

6 J. All exhibitors are expected to care for and groom their animals throughout the show. An exhibitor may be assisted by his or her immediate family (limited to parents, brother, and sisters), agriculture education teachers, county extension agent, and other eligible exhibitors. The official 4-H leader for the county or group, as designated by the county extension staff, will be permitted to assist youth under his or her supervision. In addition to the aforementioned persons Bryan County residents who have been approved by the rules committee may assist exhibitors in grooming (their name must be submitted to, and approved by the rules committee prior to the show). The exhibitor must be present and assisting with and/or grooming his or her animal in preparation for the show. Questions arising from this rule may be directed to, and decided by the Superintendent. K. The use of soft muzzles is permitted in the pens only. Soft muzzles must be removed from lambs and goats any time they are taken from their pen for any reason. L. An exhibitor, or anyone assisting an exhibitor, is not allowed to aggressively or loudly pop, slap or strike their animal at any time during the show or at any place on the fairgrounds property. Failure to abide by this rule may result in disqualification. M. Forced filling of any type by means to include stomach pumps is prohibited. Forced filling of sheep in the event of dehydration may be allowed with permission of the superintendent. N. No snares may be used on swine. O. Exhibitors, organized groups or any individual switching animals at any time and changing ear tags and other forms of identification will be barred from showing and will forfeit all prizes and premiums. P. Household nomination/entries: Exhibitors should make any final changes to the entry card at least 5 working days prior to the show. Changes should be submitted to the OSU Extension Office in writing. Q. Animals may not be exhibited in any other junior livestock show or premium sale. SHOW REGULATIONS Swine Division: Classes will include the following breeds shown in alphabetical the order listed, except with crossbreed last. 1. Black OPB (Berkshire, Poland, Spot) 2. Duroc 3. Hampshire 4. White OPB (Chester, Landrace, Hereford) 5. Yorkshire 6. Crossbreed All Swine must have negative Pseudo Rabies Test and Premise ID number! All hogs must be weighed. Hogs must weigh 190 pounds. A two pound variance will be allowed. Classes will be broken into as many divisions as needed at the election of the show officials. Classes will be divided if there are over 15 head in a breed. The first place in each weight class will be brought out to select the Breed Champion. The second place hog in the class with the champion may compete for Reserve Breed Champion if the judge so desires. 6

7 Swine Division (Con t): After the Reserve Breed Campion has been selected, the judge will select the top 15 animals in that breed to show for sale order (or more at the judge s discretion.) When the Grand Champion Swine has been selected, the Reserve Champion of that breed will be brought out to compete with the other breed champions for Reserve Grand Champion of the Show. Sheep Division: the Lamb Division will be divided into ewes and wethers in the following breeds and show in this order. 1. Southdown 2. Dorset 3. Natural Color 4. Medium Wool (Hampshire, Shropshire, Suffolk, Speckle) Classes within each breed will be divided by weight as needed. Minimum weight is 75 pounds, except Southdown which is a minimum of 60 pounds. All lambs must have a path at least one clipper blade wide sheared from shoulder to dock to expose the hide before weigh in. Blankets or socks must be removed at weigh in for Superintendent to view lamb. All lambs must be slick shorn; there can be no wool above the knees or hocks, including the head at time of show. After the Reserve Breed Champion has been selected, the judge will select the top 15 lambs in the breed to show for sale order (or more at the judge s discretion). Goat Division: Does will start show followed by wethers. Meat Goats only Wether and Doe will show separate (no billy goats) No maximum weight limit, minimum 60 lbs. No tooth rule No Pygmy Goats Classes broken by weight NO bracing doe goats. Doe goats are to be controlled with the chain only. Bracing WILL be allowed in the wether goat show. All four feet MUST be left on the ground. Heifer Division: The following breeds will be shown in this order: 1. English Breed (including Angus, Hereford and Shorthorn breeds) 2. Brahman 3. Crossbreed All heifers must have been born after September 1st, Heifers will be weighed and broken into as many classes as needed at the discretion of the show officials. An animal may not show in more than one Bryan County Junior Livestock Show. Pure Breed English breeds must show papers and must be in the name of the exhibitor, immediate family or entity by nomination date with the decision of qualification being up to the rules committee. This is a County rule only. The heifer show will be a Blow and Show. NO ADHESIVES! 7

8 Steer Division: The following classes will be shown in this order: 1. English Breed (including Angus, Hereford and Shorthorn breeds) 2. Brahman 3. Crossbreed Each breed will be divided into as many classes as needed at the election of the show officials before judging begins. There shall be a minimum weight of 1000 pounds with a 5 percent variance. The steer show will be a Blow and Show. NO ADHESIVES! To further promote the quality of livestock in our area and the Junior Livestock Show, the committee has established a show for Bryan County born animals. All animals of a species will show together regardless of classification or weight. Each species will show immediately following the end of that species show. All animals must have been owned and born in Bryan County. A Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion award will be given in each species. Showmanship Contest: There will be a Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Showmanship Contest. As of March 1 st, Junior Showmanship will consist of ages Intermediate will consist of ages Senior will consist of ages 16 & up. All contestants are eligible to compete for the Showmanship Contest in each division. Those divisions consist of swine, beef, sheep and goat. Exhibitors must show their own animal and the said animal must be officially entered and exhibited in the current year s Bryan County Junior Livestock Show. Awards will be given for first and second place for showmanship in each species in each division. AUCTION SALE All substitutions must be approved by Species Superintendent. If proper animal is not shown in the premium sale money will be forfeited. Grand Champion, Reserve Grand Champion and Breed Champion steers, market swine, market lambs, and heifers are automatically in the Premium Sale. There must be five (5) animal in a breed before the Breed Champion is automatically in the sale. All other animals must show for sale order; however, this does not mean that they are automatically in the sale. Animals will be placed in sale order based on quality regardless of ribbons awarded. The auction ring is to be setup by the Ag Chapters beginning in alphabetical order, Achille to Silo. The sale ring will be set up as follows: Bennington 2017 Durant 2021 Caddo 2018 Rock Creek 2022 Calera 2019 Silo 2023 Colbert 2020 Achille 2024 Number of animals selected for the sale The top 20 steers The top 10 heifers The top 40 swine (barrows selected as a % of total entries) The top 25 market lambs (wethers selected as a % of total entries) The top 20 goats (wethers selected as a % of total entries) 8

9 Maximum of 115 head in the Premium Sale Animals to sell will be selected in the following manner: 1. First place animals in each class will be lined up. 2. When an animal is placed in the sale order, the second place animals in that class will move up to show against the first place in other classes. 3. Each judge will place all animals for sale order. 4. Additions or subtractions must be made in writing with signature and no changes once paper is turned in. Time limit 30 minutes from time meeting begins. When an entrant has two animals in a division which have qualified for sale order, the rest of the entrant s animals in this division will be excused from the sale order selection. Only two animals shown by an exhibitor are eligible for the Premium Sale. This is to include a combination of goats, sheep, swine and/or beef. The Grand and Reserve Grand Champions must go through the Premium Sale unless it breaks the two animal rule. A fee of $20 will be deducted from each animal s premium to pay for the buyers pictures. Additionally 2% will be deducted from each animal s premium and placed into the scholarship fund. The Bryan County Junior Livestock Show, Inc. Board and Committee members request that all premium award money for the Annual Premium Sale be directed through the individual s booster club within Bryan County. No invoice from the Bryan County Junior Livestock Show, Inc. will be mailed to those individuals who do not choose to participate in their schools booster club. If an individual s family wishes to not be associated with the booster clubs they must make the payment of the youth s premium within one month of the conclusion of that year s sale. Official FFA jacket or 4-H vest, jacket or white shirt with 4-H emblem is required in premium sale auction. SCHOLARSHIPS In order to further promote animal agriculture education a portion of the entry fee and premium awards will be retained by the Committee and awarded in the form of scholarships. The eligibility and award process will be administered by the Committee. Scholarships must be used within two years. 9
