2015 American Pointer Club National Field Trial Championships The American Pointer Club held its annual National Field Trial Championships October 7-11, 2015 at the Mingo Sportsman Club in Bloomingdale, Ohio. Mingo is a private club whose members own over 5000 acres in Eastern Ohio and is considered a premier dog trial venue. They have hosted numerous championship and regional events including the 2013 AKC All Pointing Breed Gun Dog Championships. The grounds at Mingo have rolling hills and open prairies which have been groomed to provide outstanding opportunities for dogs to show their bird finding abilities. Prairie grasses have been planted in key areas and lead you through the hills past several lakes and tree lined fields of this amazing property. Native and liberated quail were used for the Championships. We are indeed lucky to have access to private grounds such as Mingo for our National events. This event was made possible by the help of many dedicated volunteers. Special thanks to Bill Monk who was our judges marshal for the Championship stakes, the Bickerstaff brothers, Harley and Honda who cooked a delicious breakfast and lunch everyday, Jamie O Donnell who was the bird steward, Jack Haines who drove the dog wagon, APC President Deb Harper who was the chief line marshal, Beky and Bill Davis, who were our hospitality committee and coordinated the dinners, Bridget Bailey, who was our catalog editor, Meredith Mays, our wrangler who provided well-mannered and nicely gaited walking horses for our trial, Debra Freidus, our event secretary and Angela Schillereff, our event chairperson. Thank you to all who came and participated with their dogs. Our honorable judges came from all across the country. Heinz Ahlman arrived from the state of Washington to judge the Open Puppy Classic and National Championship with Sara King, who drove in from Georgia. Mark Keegan came in from Colorado to judge the Open Derby Classic and National Amateur Championship with Clifford Mesnard, who hails from the Buckeye state. We appreciate their time and many hours in the saddle to select this year s winners. We have received numerous private donations by APC members and nonmember alike. It is with such sponsorship that our National Field Trial Championships can continue to prosper and grow. We appreciate the following

individuals and businesses who contributed to the success of this event: Purina Pro Plan, Dogs Unlimited, Karen and Ted Blasche, Jack and Tracy Haines, Debra Freidus, Karen and Howard Spey, Blackthorne Kennels, Tim and Angela Schillereff, Judith Hamilton, Sauvie Island Kennels, Spero Manson of Iskote Kennels, Tracy Black, Marva Petrequin and Deborah Harper. We received good entries for the Championship stakes with 22 dogs entered for the National Championship and 21 dogs in the National Amateur Championship. The running order for this event remained the same as in years past beginning with the Open Puppy Classic on Wednesday, followed by the National Championship, Open Derby Classic and concluding with the National Amateur Championship. Every night we had catered dinners at the Mingo Sportsman clubhouse, Wednesday night featured a wonderful BBQ steak and baked potato dinner with all the trimmings. Angel hair pasta with chicken and vegetables was the entrée for the dinner Thursday night. Our judge s banquet and awards presentation was held Friday evening and was well attended. After a delicious dinner of pork tenderloin with scalloped potatoes, the placements were announced for the National Championship of which is detailed later in this report. Saturday night we had a silent auction after the fried chicken dinner and the winners of the National Amateur Championship were announced. Terry Trzcinski, field consultant for Purina gave a heartfelt speech about the recent passing of Roy Pelton. Roy started competing in trials with Weimaraners, but he loved all bird dogs. He was our Purina field representative and came every year to support the APC National Field Trial Championships. He was a personal friend to many in the room. A moment of silence was shared in his memory. Open Puppy Classic Wednesday, October 7 The weather was pleasant for the week of the Championships, except for the heavy rain storm that came through on Friday. Wednesday morning the temperatures were cool, in the mid 50s, with thick fog, which slowly lifted around

9:00 am. At 10:00 am, we had a ride through of the Championship course which was lead by Bill Monk. After the lunch break, the trial began with the Open Puppy Classic which had five entries and broke away promptly at 1:00pm. The skies had cleared in the afternoon and the temperatures warmed a bit for our puppies. The first brace of the Open Puppy Classic was Hacasak Dixie Chick (Dixie) owned by Marianne Goodwin, handled by Jesse Chapman and Higby Rilo (Rilo) who was owned by Judith Hamilton and handled by Dave Pomfert. Dixie ran very well and stayed to the front the entire 30 minutes for her handler. Rilo also ran wide but was lost at time. Blackthorne Six Pack Scuito (Abs) owned and handled by Debra Freidus and Double M s Deliverance (Banjo) owned and handled by Cliff Mesnard were the second brace. Abs found and pointed a large covey of chukars and had a hard time leaving the area of the birds. Banjo ran big and was lost for much of the brace but was found again at the end of the course. The third brace was Man of Mystery (Austin) who is owned by Grace Anne Lawson, handled by Dave Pomfret and ran as a bye. Austin had a nice forward race and showed nice potential. The Open Puppy Classic placements were as follows: Judges: Heinz Ahlman and Sara King 1st - Hacasak Dixie Chick (Dixie) Owner: Marianne Goodwin Handler: Jesse Chapman 2nd - Man of Mystery (Austin) Owner: Grace Anne Lawson Handler: Dave Pomfret 3rd - Withheld 4th - Withheld

National Championship Wednesday, October 7 - Friday, October 9 With plenty of day light still left, the National Championship stake began with 2 braces run before the end of the day on Wednesday. The afternoon temperatures had warmed to the mid 70s and everyone had to shed their coats and jackets. Twenty two dogs were drawn for the Championship stake with nineteen starters. Brace 1: NFC/NAFC/FC/AFC Flying Dutchman (Dutch) owned by Spero Manson and handled by Steve Bailey was paired with FC Shaula (Shaw) owned and handled by Judith Hamilton. Both dogs broke away quickly from the starting line up the green hillside. Their opening casts were forward and with good movement. Shaw was found standing at 3. Her handler proceeded to flush the quail and Shaw went with the flush. Handler picked her up due to breach of manners. Dutch was found standing nicely a little farther down the hill. After much effort, a find on a single quail in the heavy cover was recorded at 16. Dutch was sent on but his range shortened and his handler elected to pick him up early at 38. Brace Two - Ch Cookieland I Spy Blackthorne (Spy) owned by Debra Freidus and handled by Jesse Chapman was braced with FC Tian Elhew Verbena (Bena) owned and handled by Angela Schillereff. Bena and Spy started up the first hill and both dogs were found standing to the front along the hedgerow at 5 with Bena backing Spy. Several quail were flushed from the cover. Spy had additional finds at 8 and 11 and worked the cover hard for the rest of the hour. Bena recorded a find on a single quail at 20 and ran with a consistent forward race. There was thick fog and cool temperatures Thursday morning which delayed the start of the third brace to 9am. Brace three, four and five were completed before the lunch break and brace six, seven and eight were run in the afternoon to end the day. After the fog lifted, the temperatures warmed in the afternoon to a pleasant 74 degrees and a large gallery watched the running of the Championship.

Brace Three- NAFC/FC Thrillems Dust Devil (DD) owned by Marc Devos and handled by Steve Bailey was paired with Samalu Rockacre Blackhawk (Minnie) owned by Sandy Maclean and Mark Adams and was handled by Jamie O Donnell. DD and Minnie broke away up the hillside and Minnie was found standing at 15 across the valley near the tree line. Jamie flushed a quail all with good manners and proceeded on down the course. DD came across from the tall grass with bird in mouth and was picked up by her handler. Minnie had an additional find at 18 and finished the hour to the front. Brace Four- FC/AFC Kempfer s She Aint Foolin at Keyways (Jill) owned by Kristen Fulk and Wayne Yamashita and handled by Wayne Yamashita was braced with Erin Saint Louis Jimmy ( Jimmy ) owned by Brian Wayson and handled by Dave Pomfret. Quickly starting up the hillside, both dogs went out of sight but were later found standing in the lower section of the valley near a small island of trees and bushes at 7. Jimmy was on point and Jill was honoring her bracemate nicely. The handler could not produce a bird and requested to relocate Jimmy. Jill was sent on and Jimmy could not find the bird and moved on as well. Jimmy and Jill had a divided find at 13 with Jimmy suffering a breach of manners and was ordered up. Yamashita flushed the birds and Jill held with good manners. Jill made a huge move to front never to be seen again and was lost at 40. Brace Five- Coldwater Cotton (Lil) owned by Jack and Tracy Haines and handled by Tracy Haines was paired with Jewel s Tire Swing (Juno) owned by Christopher and Stephanie Meyer and handled by Diane Vater. Lil and Juno were cast off and were seen running down across the valley. Lil was seen under a bird and was picked up by her handler. Juno was found standing at 8 near the tree line. Quail where flushed and all was in order and she was sent on. Juno had additional finds at 11, 17 and 28. Juno finished the hour with a strong finish to the front.

Brace Six- FC Hard Tellin (Dixie) owned by David O Brien was braced with FC/AFC Just Wait Bess (Bess) owned by Jack and Tracy Haines and handled by Tracy Haines. Dixie and Dave did not show for their brace and Bess was run alone. Bess had a nice find at 8 all manners were good and she was sent on. Bess started to slow in the warm afternoon weather and her handler elected to pick her up at 32. Brace Seven-CH AFC Cookieland Blackthorne Clouseau (Clue) owned and handled by Debra Freidus was paired with 2014 NFC/FC Conway Mike owned by Chuck Cooper and Diane Vater and handled by Diane Vater. Mike and Clue were cast away in the second brace of the afternoon. Mike was seen crossing the first big field and found standing on the edge of the tree line at 5 with Clue honoring nicely. His handler quickly put the birds to flight and Mike was released and moved on to the next field. Mike was found standing again at 11 with good style and after birds were flushed he was sent over the next hill. Mike has excellent ground speed and was always reaching forward. Mike worked the edges of the tree line around the second half of the course and scored additional finds at 20 and 39 to complete the hour. Clue ran a nice gun dog race and was consistent from beginning to end. Clue was found standing at 30 and 46 and quail were produced with good manners. Clue was lost at time. Brace Eight- FC Wynot Whistlin Dixie (Dixie) owned by Bill and Beky Davis was braced with FC After Further Review (Bo) owned by Jack and Tracy Haines and handled by Tracy Haines. This was the last brace of the day and both dogs sped away up the grassy hillside. Dixie went up the right side and Bo on the left side darting in and out of the tall grass. Dixie came out of the tall grass just on the edge of the trees as we were cresting the hill. Quail flushed and Dixie followed after the birds. Dixie was picked up by her handler. Bo was found standing on the edge of the tree line at 21. No birds were found. Bo was sent on only to be picked up later by his handler at 40.

Friday morning skies were overcast and threatening to rain. There remained two more braces of the National Championship stake to be run. The ninth brace began promptly at 8:00 am and the tenth and final brace immediately followed. Brace Nine- NGDC/FC/AFC Dash Away owned by Spero Manson and handled by Steve Bailey was braced with FC Ubetcha (Maizie) owned by Robert Spillman and handled by Dave Pomfret. Both dogs were cast away up the grassy hillside. Maizie had bird contact at 9 with good manners. She had another find at 17 with a breach of manners and was picked up. Dash had a strong forward race with finds at 25, 33 and 42 with nice style and good manners to finish the hour. Brace Ten- CH Paladen s No More Mr Nice Guy CD JH owned by Arthur and Virginia Kahn and handled by Debby Freidus was paired with FC Crandall s Hideaway Hank owned and handled by Dave Pomfret. Shortly after the breakaway, Hank had a find at 4 with Guy honoring, but Hank suffered a breach of manners during the flush and was picked up by his handler. Guy continued the course and was found standing at 26 with good manners as the birds were flushed. Guy was sent on and had a stop to flush at 29. Guy worked the cover well and stayed in close range for the remainder hour. The placements for the National Championship were as follows: Judges: Heinz Ahlman and Sara King 1st- NFC/FC Conway Mike (Mike) Owner: Chuck Cooper and Diane Vater Handler: Diane Vater 2nd- Jewel s Tire Swing (Juno) Owner: Christopher & Stephanie Meyer Handler: Diane Vater 3rd- Samalu Rockacre Blackhawk (Minnie) Owner: S. Maclean & M. Adams Handler: Jamie O Donnell

4th- NGDC/FC/AFC Dash Away (Dash) Owner: Spero Manson Handler: Steve Bailey Judge Award of Merit- FC Tian Elhew Verbena (Bena) Owner: Angela Schillereff Handler: Angela Schillereff Open Derby Classic Friday October 9 Immediately following the conclusion of the National Championship stake the Open Derby Classic left the starting line at 10:45 am. The weather changed from overcast and cloudy to heavy rain showers and everyone wore their raingear for the afternoon ride. Brace One- Man of Mystery (Austin) owned by Grace Anne Lawson and handled by Dave Pomfret was braced with Worth the Wait (Daisy) owned by Jack and Tracy Haines and handled by Tracy Haines. Austin and Daisy started up the grassy hillside and Daisy made several nice moves and stayed well to the front for her handler. Austin also ran well but both dogs went birdless for the half hour. Brace Two- Blackthorne Six Pack Scuito (Abs) owned and handled by Debra Freidus was paired with Hitman s Smoking Gun (Rock) owned by Jack and Tracy Haines and handled by Tracy. Abs and Rock left the starting line and the rain poured down for the entire brace. Both dogs made efforts to locate birds, Rock reaching more to the front and ranging a wider than his bracemate. Neither dog located a bird during the running of their brace. Brace Three- Higby Rilo (Rilo) owned by Judith Hamilton and handled by Dave Pomfret was the third and last brace for the Open Derby Classic. Rilo ran as a bye and was lost for some of the time before showing up at the end before time was called. Rilo was also birdless.

Due to the heavy rain storms and difficult weather conditions and because none of the derby dogs found birds on course the judges called all of the derby dogs back for a chance to point birds and then made their final decision. The placements for the Open Derby Classic were as follows: Judges: Mark Keegan and Cliff Mesnard 1st-Hitman s Smoking Gun (Rock) Owner: Jack & Tracy Haines Handler: Tracy Haines 2nd- Man of Mystery (Austin) Owner: Grace Anne Lawson Handler: Dave Pomfret 3rd- Worth the Wait (Daisy) Owner: Jack & Tracy Haines Handler: Tracy Haines 4th- Blackthorne Six Pack Scuito (Abs) Owner: Debra Fredius Handler: Debra Freidus National Amateur Championship Friday, October 9 - Saturday October 10 After the conclusion of the Open Derby Classic we took a short lunch break and the National Amateur Championship began at 1:30pm. The rain storm let up and the sun tried to come out from behind the clouds to dry the very wet grounds. Three braces of the NAC were run today with the remainder to run on Saturday. Brace One - FC/AFC Kempfer s She Ain t Foolin Keyways (Jill) owned by Kristen Fulk and Wayne Yamashita and handled by Wayne Yamashita was braced with FC /AFC Just Wait Bess (Bess) owned by Jack and Tracy Haines and handled by Tracy Haines. Jill was fast off the line with a powerful long range cast to the front on the right. Her ground speed was excellent. Jill was found standing at 8 near the top of the first hill on the right side. The handler relocated Jill twice before securing

game while Jill maintained her manners throughout the find. Upon release, Jill cast far to the rear and right side of the course was out of judgment for some time. Jill finally re-took the front and finished the brace without further birdwork. Bess ranged nicely to the front clearly hunting well in a consistent manner. Found standing at 48 Bess handled this find all in order with nice style. Brace Two Erin s Saint Louis Jimmy (Jimmy) owned by Brian Wayson and handled by: Grace Anne Lawson was paired with Jewel s Tire Swing (Juno) owned by Chris & Stephanie Meyer and handled by Chris Meyer. Jimmy was off the line with a snappy attractive running style. A nice find for Jimmy was recorded 7. At the mid-way point of the course where it passed the lake and made a sweeping turn back toward the starting line, Jimmy made a move to the East and was gone for some time. With the help of his scout, Jimmy finally came back to the front to finish the hour. Juno was well to the front immediately with a bold opening cast. She was found standing at 8, 14 and 32 and showed excellent style on point which was maintained after the flush of the bird. Juno was noted by both judges as handling in a friendly manner, always well forward, and continued to the end of the brace hunting well to the front. Brace Three Samalu Rockacre Blackhawk (Minnie) owned by Sandy Maclean & Mark Adams and handled by: Jamie O Donnell was braced with FC Hard Tellin, (Dixie) owned by David O Brien. Dixie was a late scratch and her bracemate Minnie was run as drawn. Minnie was cast off the line and ran quickly to the front. She handled in a very mannerly style showing a more moderate range but with thorough coverage of all objectives. There were two finds recorded at 9 and 20 and all was in order. Minnie again stood at 23 and made a slight turn to mark the flight of the flush. At 44 while making the final turn back toward the clubhouse, Minnie was seen under a bird and was picked up by her handler. Saturday morning the weather was beautiful, sunny and the temperatures were in the mid 50s. The fourth brace of the National Amateur Championship was cast off at 8:15am. Three braces were run in the morning and after the lunch break the remaining three braces were ran.

Brace Four NAFC/FC Thrillems Dust Devil, (DD) owned and handled by Mark Devos was paired with FC/ AFC Shaula (Shaw) owned and handled by Judith Hamilton. DD flew off the line to the front with excellent ground speed. After clearing the first ridge, DD followed the course making a wide sweeping turn and had a find at 8 with all in order. Several minutes later, DD encountered a running chukar. The moving bird was too much for DD who was picked up by her handler. Shaw was cast off nicely to the front and ran over the crest of the first hill. She was found standing on the right side of the course in extremely thick cover at 7. After three re-locations, the handler was not able to produce a bird in the heavy cover and elected to move on. Shaw had additional birdwork at 21, 29, and 37. Upon release of the last find, Shaw again was found standing and there was difficulty producing a bird in the thick cover and she suffered a breach of manners and was picked up. Brace Five FC After Further Review (Bo) owned by Jack and Tracy Haines and handled by Tracy Haines was braced with NFC/ FC Conway Mike (Mike) owned by Chuck Cooper and Diane Vater and handled by Chris Meyer. Bo was fast off the line with a strong forward cast, excellent ground speed, and ran quickly out of sight. Handling in a friendly manner yet at distance for the entire brace, Bo was found standing at 18. After much effort, no birds were located and the dog was moved on. Bo was given credit for a nice find at 24. Of note to both judges was that Bo hunted many areas of the cover that was bypassed by others. After the cast off, Mike encountered several running quail in a tree line on the first hill and this ended the brace early for Mike. Brace Six NFC/NAFC/FC/AFC Flying Dutchman (Dutch) owned and handled by Spero Manson was braced with FC Tian Elhew Verbena (Bena) owned by Angela Schillereff and handled by Wayne Yamashita. Dutch started out the brace nicely and had a consistent gun dog race for the hour. Standing multiple times throughout the course to include three dead bird finds, Dutch stood more birds than any other in the competition. He handled very kindly with good manners on every find. Bena sped off with excellent ground speed to the left side of the course. She was found standing at 7 with nice style in open cover as the handler and judge crested the first hill. A quail was

flushed and Bena was sent forward to be found honoring Dutch in front on point. It was noted by the judges that Bena honored without caution or the presence of her handler. She was found again at 14 standing well to the front along the treeline with nice style that was maintained throughout the flush. Bena stood again at 28, however, the bird was dead. Upon making the last turn, Bena scored another find at 40 on a pair of quail with nice style and all manners in order. Bena finished the hour strong with a nice move to the front along the final hedgerow. Brace Seven FC Crandall s Hideaway Hank (Hank) owned by Dave Pomfret and handled by Grace Anne Lawson was paired with CH AFC Cookieland Blackthorne Clouseau (Clue) owned and handled by Debby Freidus. Hank started up the grassy hill and was soon out of sight. He was found standing at 9. Hank suffered a breach of manners at the flush and was picked up by his handler. Clue was mannerly from start to finish. She handled the course kindly for her handler and clearly was an excellent bird finder. She had finds at 6, 9, 25, 29, and nicely handled a stop to flush at 32. Clue was intense on point and showed good manners around all her game. Brace Eight NGDC/FC/AFC Dash Away (Dash) owned and handled by Spero Manson was braced with CH Paladen s No More Mr Nice Guy CD JH (Guy) owned by Arthur and Virginia Kahn and handled by Debby Freidus. Guy and Dash were the second brace of the afternoon. Dash was found standing at 6 past the first crest line on the right under a stand of trees and impressively stood with style while his bracemate, Guy came in and unfortunately failed to honor. Guy was picked up by his handler. The quail was flushed and Dash had good manners and continued the brace alone. Dash was found standing again at 18 in very thick cover. With the dense cover, the handler made an effort to locate the bird but chose to move forward after several relocation attempts. Dash recorded another find at 30 with good manners and nice style. After making the turn past the lake back toward the clubhouse, Dash stood again at 48 and two quail were flushed. Dash maintained the same intensity, forward range, and style on point from the beginning to the end of the one hour stake.

Brace Nine FC Ubetcha (Maizie) owned by Robert Spillman and handled by Grace Ann Lawson was paired with FC Wynot Whistlin Dixie (Dixie) owned by Bill and Beky Davis and handled by Bill Davis. This was the last brace of the Championship and they broke away at 3:45pm. At 5, both dogs were located on point together about 30 feet apart at the top of the first hill. It was not clear which dog had established point first, and a divided find was granted to both dogs. Maizie continued well with another find at 9 and a stop to flush at 24. A few minutes later, Maizie quickly approached Dixie who was standing on point in a grove of trees to the left of the course. As the bird flushed wild, Maizie did not stop to honor and moved ahead of the standing dog. This ended the brace for Maizie who had performed well to this point. Dixie performed nicely throughout the brace with finds at 5, 10 and a stop to flush was handled nicely at 28. Dixie was very well mannered and handled kindly throughout her brace working at a gun dog range, objectives were clearly sought and the dog hunted hard. The placements for the National Amateur Championship were as follows: Judges: Mark Keegan and Cliff Mesnard 1st- FC Tian Elhew Verbena (Bena) Owner: Angela Schillereff Handler: Wayne Yamashita 2nd- Jewel s Tire Swing (Juno) Owner: Christopher & Stephanie Meyer Handler Chris Meyer 3rd-NGDC/FC/AFC Dash Away (Dash) Owner: Spero Manson Handler: Spero Manson 4th-FC After Further Review (Bo) Owner-Jack & Tracy Haines Handler: Tracy Haines
