The Classic Collection Welcome, in what is a most momentous year for us here at Border Fine Arts, as we celebrate the fortieth anniversary of making our figurines, right here in the Scottish Borders! Not only that, but 2014 sees us celebrating twenty-five years of the Border Fine Arts Society too! It doesn t feel like forty years have gone by, but in 1974 John Hammond and I were travelling to and from Langholm from Hampshire, making, and then taking, the early Border Fine Arts figurines to retailers. What a commute that was! How happy we were when the M6 opened! Along the way we have experimented with a wide variety of subjects, looks and styles for different figurines but we always fall back on our Classic look, after all it s what we do best! And what you tell us you like best too! Now, forty years on, and we are still making the traditional Classic in Langholm, still taking the same interest in nostalgia and country life, still applying the same attention to detail and quality to the pieces we make, as we have always done. Older we may be, wiser, maybe not, but sticklers for detail most definitely! Hopefully, you ll think so too. Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 3

B1428 Newly Crowned (LE: 250) Height: 23.0cm Length: 22.5cm Keith Sherwin It s Newly Crowned, Her Majesty holds the Sovereign s Orb and the Sceptre with Cross, and wears the ring of England and the Imperial State Crown, made for Queen Victoria in The Coronation Dress was designed by Norman Hartnell and has elaborately embroidered details including the rose of England, thistle of Scotland, Irish shamrock and Welsh daffodil. B1406 Her Majesty at Balmoral (LE: 350) Height: 20.5cm Length: 17.0cm Anne Wall This delightful figurine depicts Her Majesty in a relaxed pose at the Balmoral Estate, where she can relax and enjoy some of her favourite things. Here, her beloved corgis are never far from her side and many have been recorded on what can only be considered some of the most endearing photographs ever taken of the Queen. Tiny is on her knee and Brush is at her feet. 4 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

B1341 Trooping The Colour, 1952 (LE: 500) Height: 38.5cm Length: 37.0cm Anne Wall Celebrating the Queen s sixty-year reign, our figurine depicts Her Majesty at the Trooping the Colour parade of 1952, her first as Sovereign. Wearing the scarlet tunic of the Colonel-in-Chief of the Scots Guards and the blue ribbon of the Order of the Garter, her Majesty is elegantly poised on her chestnut horse, Winston. The black plume on her tricorne hat is in remembrance of her father, His Majesty King George VI, who died four months previously. B1444 Royal Parade (LE: 250) Height: 29.0cm Length: 30.5cm Anne Wall This fabulous piece commemorates the Queen s Coronation, on 2nd June 1953 sixty years ago last year. The subject is the majestic skewbald Drum Horse, Bonaparte, who appeared in the Trooping the Colour at the time of the Coronation. The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 5

NEW B1513 Checking the Hill Ewes (LE: 350) Height: 24.0cm Length: 19.0cm With his faithful collie, Lassie, at his side, the shepherd raises his hand to shade his eyes from the glorious spring sun rising above the skyline as he checks his hill ewes are all present and correct. B0983 The Crosser (Yellow Labrador) Height: 33.5cm Length: 20.0cm Paul Back Caution is called for here, as our man follows the flight of a high pheasant (the crosser) that s taken an unexpected turn down the line of the guns! B0983A The Crosser (Black Labrador) 6 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

B1385 Alert & Ready (LE: 350) Height: 29.5cm Length: 28.5cm Keith Sherwin Eager to work, the Patterdale terrier is known for being robust and hard working. Bred originally in the village of Patterdale in the Lake District, it is now a cherished working and family dog in many other parts of the world. This fine specimen really captures the breed s character, alert and ready it s obviously keen for action. B1363 Good Retrieve (LE: 500) Height: 21.5cm Length: 26.5cm Keith Sherwin A gundog breed originating in England during the mid-nineteenth century, the flat-coated retriever was developed to retrieve both on land and in water. Their strong muscular jaw and long muzzle are ideal for carrying birds and upland game. The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 7

B1264 Game for More (Black) (LE: 500) Height: 24.0cm Length: 26.0cm Keith Sherwin Our experienced gun dog knows that ducks come to the pond either in the early morning or early evening and that a little patience and silence are key to having a good flight. Ever alert, his trusty canine companion quite happily sits and waits and, whatever the yield, is always game for more. B1303 Farmyard Antics (LE: 500) Height: 16.0cm Length: 23.5cm Anne Wall While most of the young pups play around the old water trough, one is more interested in keeping an eye on mum, but she is showing no signs of being distracted, preferring to keep an eye on them all, just incase they get up to any of their usual farmyard antics. B1264A Game for More (Yellow) 8 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

NEW B1282 Welsh Ram, Ewe & Lamb (LE: 500) Height: 17.0cm Length: 23.5cm Antony Halls This impressive study of a Welsh Mountain Sheep family group really captures the rugged, hardy characteristics of this small, thick-fleeced, native breed that is capable of surviving the harshest of winters up in the Welsh mountains where there is very little quality forage. B1541 Rough Fell Ewe & Lambs (LE: 350) Height: 17.0cm Length: 19.0cm One of the largest carcase mountain sheep in the British flock, the rough fell is an extremely hardy breed, bred to withstand the harshest conditions of its native terrain the exposed mountains and moorland areas of Old Westmorland (South Cumbria, North Lancashire and parts of Yorkshire s West Riding). The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 9

B1182 Beltex Ewe & Lambs (LE: 500) Height: 13.5cm Length: 26.5cm These white-faced sheep originate from Belgian Texels, hence the name, which was created by blending the two words Texel and Belgium to give the portmanteau word Beltex. Famed for their extremely heavy muscling, especially in the hindquarters, Beltex sheep were first introduced to Britain in 1989 and have taken the British lamb industry by storm ever since. B1119 Cheviot Ewe & Lambs (LE: 500) Height: 15.0cm Length: 19.0cm As its name suggests, the South Country Cheviot is a hardy white-faced hill sheep from the Cheviot Hills of the Scottish Borders. Originally its dense fleece was selectively bred for hardiness, but it went on to secure the breed s dominance in the Tweed industry; however, today it is the production of quality lamb for which this sheep is prized. 10 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

B1251 Mule Ewe & Texel Lambs (LE: 500) Height: 15.5cm Length: 24.0cm The traditional northern mule ewe, a cross between a Swaledale ewe and a Blue Faced Leicester tup, is an excellent mother. Renowned for producing progeny of good meaty sires like the Texel, it is a hardy breed to boot, which is why it is used extensively in northern England where the climate is harsher. B1176 On The Edge (LE: 500) Height: 20.0cm Length: 19.0cm Hans Kendrick The rugged cliffs of the Pembrokeshire coast is no place for straying sheep, but strayed they have, and so it is that the collie has been sent out to find this Welsh ewe and lamb on the edge and bring them back to a safer area. The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 11

B1441 Badger Face Ewe & Lambs (Torddu) (LE: 350) Height: 17.0cm Length: 21.0cm An ancient native Welsh breed, there are two types of Welsh Mountain Badger Face Sheep: The Torwen (Welsh for white belly, the rest of the sheep being black) and Torddu (pronounced torthee, Welsh for black belly, the rest of the sheep being white). B1441A Badger Face Ewe & Lambs (Torwen) B1274 Blackie Tup & Ewes (LE: 500) Height: 17.0cm Length: 23.5cm Hans Kendrick A blackfaced flock was established at Ettrick in the sixteenth century by King James IV of Scotland, no less, and, as if aware of his rich ancestry, our majestic ram stands proudly over his ewe and eldest lamb in this highly-evocative portrayal capturing the character of this hardy, versatile and prolific breed which remains the mainstay of the Scottish sheep industry today. 12 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

B1218 In Safe Hands (LE: 350) Height: 21.5cm Length: 26.0cm Hans Kendrick Bringing the flock down from the hills is both time consuming and risky; of course you have your dog to guide them but sometimes one just stumbles into difficulty, luckily the farmer isn t on foot so it is easily lifted up and held in safe hands. B1170 Steep Descent (LE: 500) Height: 26.5cm Length: 24.0cm Hans Kendrick Hardy they may be, but it has to be admitted that sheep are not the brightest of creatures and when it comes to bringing them in off the fells they are often at their most frustrating and unpredictable, as these Herdwick ewes prove. Their chosen route involves a much more dangerous course than intended and is a very steep descent indeed! The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 13

NEW B1455 Gentlemen s Club (LE: 350) Height: 21.0cm Length: 30.5cm With the ground frosty and grazing in short supply the farmer has put out hay for his livestock. In the lea of the wall, the Highland bull and two blackie rams have been joined by a cock pheasant, making this a real gentlemen s club. B1425 Ewe Turn (LE: 500) Height: 14.5cm Length: 26.0cm The blackie ewes are being brought down to the nearby fields for closer monitoring. As they cross the bridge over a small burn, one decides to challenge the authority of the farm s collie. The U-turn brings a smile to the shepherd s face! 14 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

B1325 Highland Cattle (LE: 500) Height: 20.5cm Length: 30.0cm The Scottish Highlands can boast some of the most ruggedly beautiful landscape to be found anywhere in the British Isles, and the same can be said of the cattle. One of the oldest and most instantly recognisable recorded breeds in the world, despite the apparent fierceness of their appearance, Highlanders are well adjusted and docile. B1466A Highland Calf (Dark) Height: 9.5cm Length: 11.0cm B1466 Highland Calf (Light) The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 15

B1260 Galloway Cow & Calf (Belted) (LE: 500) Height: 16.0cm Length: 24.0cm Kirsty Armstrong Originating from the south-west region of Scotland with the same name, the Galloway is known as one of the purest, hardiest, and probably one of the oldest, of the UK s native breeds. There are many characteristics of Galloway cattle which make them an outstanding and unique animal; none more so than the distinctive white belt around their girth as portrayed here. B1260A Galloway Cow & Calf (Black) 16 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection B1467 Galloway Calf (Belted) Height: 9.0cm Length: 9.5cm Kirsty Armstrong B1467A Galloway Calf (Black)

B1155 Limousin Cow & Calf (LE: 500) Height: 17.5cm Length: 31.0cm Kirsty Armstrong Surprisingly perhaps, it was not until 1971 that this breed arrived in Britain. They were, however, an immediate success and rapidly demand grew. By 1986 it had replaced the Hereford as Britain s top beef animal, and to this day, with more pure and crossbred calves registered than any other breed, the Limousin retains its dominance. B1013 Limousin Bull (LE: 750) Height: 16.0cm Length: 25.5cm Having more pure and crossbred calves registered with BCMS than any other breed, the Limousin is firmly established as the UK s most prominent beef animal and this handsome beast is off to keep up the good work! The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 17

B1113 British Blue Cow & Calf (LE: 500) Height: 16.5cm Length: 23.5cm Kirsty Armstrong The first blue cattle were imported to the UK from Belgium in the early 1980s. Ironically, the breed was selectively bred by nineteenth-century Belgian breeders who imported Shorthorn bulls from the UK to improve their native dairy breeds by adding the muscular bulk for which the breed is so revered today! B1154 British Blue Bull (LE: 500) Height: 18.0cm Length: 25.5cm Kirsty Armstrong British breeders imported Belgian Blues into the UK in the early 1980s and by the late 1990s, a distinctive British Blue had been developed by dedicated herdsmen looking to improve the breed s genetics and characteristics for the UK dairy and commercial beef markets. 18 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

B1471 Beef Shorthorn Bull (LE: 500) Height: 18.5cm Length: 25.5cm The Shorthorn can proudly boast of being the oldest recorded breed of cattle in the world with a Pedigree Herd Book, the very first in the world, being published in 1822! Sadly having joined the Rare Breed Survival Trust s list in 1987, it s hard to imagine, then, that they were at one time the most prolific breed across the globe. B1139 Beef Shorthorn Cow & Calf (LE: 500) Height: 17.5cm Length: 27.0cm Kirsty Armstrong The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 19

B0996 Simmental Bull (LE: 500) Height: 21.0cm Length: 29.5cm Antony Halls The rugged Simmental originated in Switzerland but is now popular around the world. It has been successfully bred in the UK for over thirty-five years, where it has proved itself well in the British beef herd, thanks to its hardiness, high fertility, and longevity. B1342 Lincoln Red Cow & Calf (LE: 350) Height: 18.0cm Length: 31.0cm With its cherry red coat and sturdy frame, the gentle but hardy, swift-growing and long-lived Lincoln Red remains well suited to the temperamental British weather and is able to graze outside for most of the year. 20 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

B1075 Charolais Bull (LE: 500) Height: 20.0cm Length: 26.5cm Kirsty Armstrong This magnificent breed of large, pale-coloured cattle was originally developed in the Charolais region of France for draught purposes but is now a popular choice for both beef production and crossbreeding around the world. B1138 Longhorn Bull (LE: 500) Height: 16.5cm Length: 25.5cm An evocative and enduring link to the past, the Longhorn was possibly the first animal to be bred to type, over two hundred years ago, by our forefathers who saw the potential of selective breeding and produced this magnificent breed. The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 21

B1184 Aberdeen Angus Family Group (LE: 600) Height: 16.5cm Length: 35.0cm The Aberdeen Angus is one of the most famous breeds of beef cattle in the world, and with good reason. These well-built, hardy black cattle from the hills and glens of north-east Scotland have all the characteristics needed to produce beef of outstanding quality. B1129 Hereford Family (LE: 600) Height: 17.5cm Length: 32.0cm Antony Halls Mentioned by various agricultural authors as far back as the early 1600s, the Hereford is one of the oldest British beef breeds in existence and is believed to have evolved from the indigenous red cattle, which roamed the Welsh border counties and the western extremities of England centuries ago. 22 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

B1181 Nosy Neighbours (Black & White) (LE: 500) Height: 13.0cm Length: 32.0cm Hans Kendrick It s always hard working with an audience breathing down your neck, as this farmer knows only to well. As he tries to replace the ball cock in the tank in the hope that it will stop the water overflowing he is suddenly joined by some rather inquisitive or should that be nosy? neighbours. B1446 Back on Grass (LE: 350) Height: 12.0cm Length: 31.0cm The morning milking is completed. The dairy herd has been housed inside all winter but now, with the excellent spring weather and the pastures in prime condition, the farmer has decided it s the right time to put his cows outside and back on grass. The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 23

B1424 Master with Hounds (Bay) (LE: 500) Height: 27.5cm Length: 45.0cm Anne Wall It is time to gather the reins for the first hunt of the season. The huntsman and his hounds lead the mounted field as they set off for the opening meet, cantering on tracks alongside vast areas of plough. B1424A Master with Hounds (Grey) B1378 Fruit n Veg (LE: 400) Height: 16.5cm Length: 35.5cm Another beautifully restored cart from Gordon Boswell s extensive collection of decorated horse-drawn living vans and working carts. Seen here laden with late summer and early autumn fruit and vegetables, the ringing of the bell and the call from the vendor would bring customers out from their homes to buy the seasonal produce fresh from the farm. 24 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

B1396 Into Their Stride (Black) (LE: 500) Height: 21.5cm Length: 30.5cm Our Section D cob is showing all the power and strength of a really good stallion. With his high stepping action his handler is just keeping up with the pace as they get into their stride before the judges. B1396A Into Their Stride (Bay) B1445 Staying Close (Dark Sorrel) (LE: 350) Height: 16.0cm Length: 40.5cm Out feeding and checking his flock of Hampshire ewes, our farmer has found a newborn lamb that needs some attention. Carrying it back to the farm on his donkey cart, he knows that the mother will follow on behind, staying close. B1445A Staying Close (Skewbald) The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 25

NEW NEW B1456 The Last Collection (LE: 250) Height: 15.5cm Length: 28.0cm Out on his country round delivering, as well as collecting, mail for the farms and outlying houses, this postie s last collection of the day isn t from the post box, but from a very well-trained collie. B1426 Last Pen of the Day (LE: 350) Height: 19.5cm Length: 25.0cm Selling fat lambs and cast ewes has kept the auctioneer and clerk out in the cold sheds for most of the day selling off the plank, so they are very pleased to get to the last pen of the day! 26 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

NEW B1451 Bringing Home the Bacon (Blue) (LE: 350) Height: 34.0cm Length: 11.0cm Adapted for carrying farm livestock and proving very useful when the farmer has been to market and bought some young sows, today this van is literally bringing home the bacon! B1451A Bringing Home the Bacon (Green) This figurine depicts Gloucestershire Old Spot pigs. B1394A Learning The Trade (LE: 500) Height: 15.0cm Length: 34.5cm The best way to learn the trade of hostelry is by practical experience under tuition from an expert, which is why this young heavy horse is being prepared by the son, under the watchful eye of his father at the county show. The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 27

NEW B1440 A New Bale (LE: 500) Height: 18.5cm Length: 36.5cm Supplementary nourishment is essential when the suckler cows are out grazing and as soon as the farmer appears they head towards the holder, closely followed by their calves. One lucky cow has got there first and is taking the opportunity to grab an early morsel from the new bale. B1527 When Push Comes to Shove (LE: 500) Height: 16.5cm Length: 30.5cm Although the Massey Ferguson s 4-cylinder diesel engine and auger have made easy work of drilling out the hole for the post to be dropped into, it still takes a push and a shove to get the work done. 28 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

B1220 A Tight Turn (LE: 750) Height: 16.5cm Length: 39.0cm It s a tight squeeze, taking the David Brown 950 with Hurricane harvester and trailer down the narrow country lanes this before trying to access the field for silaging and even though the driver has prepared the way by removing the gate and some of the wall, it s still going to be a tight turn. B1481 A Bit of a Stretch (LE: 500) Height: 18.0cm Length: 37.0cm Three generations of the same family work in harmony to bring in the crop, but for all it s a bit of a stretch. The grandson drives the tractor, sitting well forward for his feet to reach the clutch, whilst his father lifts up the bales for the grandfather to stack. The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 29

B1236 Fine Weather Work (LE: 750) Height: 13.5cm Length: 33.5cm Since the weather has been kind and the forecast promises more sunshine, the hay has been cut and has been left drying. Now the farmer makes ready to start turning the rows, in the hope that in a few days he will be able to bale his precious commodity. But it s weather permitting, for this is definitely fine weather work. B1330 Easy Pickings (LE: 500) Height: 13.0cm Length: 34.5cm Thankfully, the corn has been harvested and, as the local grain merchant has arrived for the collection, the hard work is now complete for the farmer. While the merchant s lorry is being loaded up, the farm hens, never ones to miss an opportunity, even under the watchful eye of the farm collie, take the time to get some easy pickings. 30 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

NEW B1452 Hembra & Cria (White) (LE: 350) Height: 20.0cm Length: 21.5cm One of the camelid species and a close relative of the llama, alpacas originate from the Altiplano in west-central South America and can be found in the Andes in Peru as well as Chile and Bolivia. Here, it is favoured for the fine quality of its fleece and its teddy bear looks. B1452A Hembra & Cria (Brown) B1249 Hard Work By Hand (LE: 500) Height: 18.0cm Length: 36.0cm Working in the woods in the late 1960s was arduous work. The stacked 6 lengths of timber all had to be manhandled onto the trailer and the County 4x4 was the power horse, able to push and pull empty or loaded trailers to or from anywhere, in any terrain. Such 6 props were destined for the coalmines. The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 31

B1299 Moving to High Ground (LE: 500) Height: 33.5cm Length: 30.5cm Keith Sherwin It s rutting season again in the Scottish Uplands and this magnificent stag has been working hard to keep his harem of hinds to himself. Something has startled him, and at his signal they all make a dash, leaping and bounding over each other whilst moving to high ground. 32 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

B0220 Highland Majesty Height: 30.0cm Length: 36.0cm Richard Roberts The red deer stag is in peak condition and is ready for the rut in October. This happens annually and by 26th September, a date known in Scotland as The Day of the Roaring, all stags have come down from the high ground in search of hinds. B0220A Highland Majesty (Bronzed) Height: 30.0cm Length: 36.0cm Richard Roberts The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 33

B1191 Sharing Secrets (LE: 600) Height: 15.5cm Length: 24.0cm Anne Wall The title for this piece really says it all, as this charming study of a donkey and her young foal perfectly captures the special bond between the pair in such a way that when you look at the young donkey nuzzling her mother it s almost as if she has a secret to share. B1346 Slim Chance (LE: 500) Height: 14.5cm Length: 26.5cm Keith Sherwin With snow covering the ground, getting food can be somewhat limited, however it does have its advantages, as this little mouse is no longer camouflaged by its surroundings. The fox has seen movement. The mouse is making a dash for cover. The race is on. Who will win? Perhaps the mouse surely it s in with a slim chance? 34 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

NEW NEW B1511 A Safe Perch (LE: 250) Height: 21.5cm Length: 24.0cm Wandering into the garden, this fox has startled a cock robin, however, not being faint hearted, the robin is soon chastising the fox, once it has found a safe perch. B1539 Pecking Order (LE: 250) Height: 29.5cm Length: 23.0cm The waxwing is a winter visitor and, whilst willing to share the bounty of the hawthorn s fruit with the blue tits, it is determined to ensure that they adhere to the rules of the definite pecking order. The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 35

B1448 In Flight (LE: 250) Height: 33.0cm Length: 30.5cm Keith Sherwin The grouse moor is a wonderful wild place and if you walk through the growing heather in the summer when the red grouse are nesting you re certain to come across them, although, with a flash of colour and their distinctive call, they re in flight. B1192 Rising Pheasant (LE: 350) Height: 26.0cm Length: 37.5cm Keith Sherwin On a still warm evening sound carries quickly and this cock pheasant has been startled by something close by and so, without hesitation, it gets up and away in a hurry and a flurry of bright colourful plumage. 36 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

B1376 A Room with a View (LE: 500) Height: 27.0cm Length: 26.5cm Keith Sherwin Large cavities in walls or in hollow trees often provide suitable nesting sites for the barn owl (Tyto alba) but quiet disused farm buildings are by far the best places. Our pair has been lucky enough to find a site that not only provides protection, is close to ample grassland and hedgerows, but also offers a room with a view. B1442 Dusk Patrol (LE: 350) Height: 25.0cm Length: 26.0cm Keith Sherwin The tawny owl flies over a hawthorn hedge ripe with glossy red berries. Using its enormous eyes and ears to pick up the tiniest movement, this beautiful bird can locate its prey with the utmost precision. The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 37

B1355 Different Points of View (LE: 500) Height: 24.0cm Length: 21.0cm It s not very often you get to spot a relatively common great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) alongside the much smaller and less common, lesser spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos minor) on the same patch, not least because they are both very shy. But that s not to say that when they do occasionally meet they have different points of view. B1443 Chance Meeting (LE: 350) Height: 27.5cm Length: 20.0cm Keith Sherwin The blue jay is collecting acorns fallen from the old oak which he will bury in secret hoardes as an insurance against a harsh winter, when he spots, by chance, an intruding treecreeper. 38 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

B1266 Who s First? (LE: 350) Height: 30.0cm Length: 31.0cm Keith Sherwin What a beautiful sight. In nature, observation is the best teaching method for imparting the vital skills of survival and so, having emerged from their nest, these young kingfishers are watching their parents with keen eyes. B1422 Golden Pheasant (LE: 250) Height: 30.0cm Length: 24.0cm Keith Sherwin One of the most spectacular of all pheasants, the male bird truly lives up to its name, with its striking cape of orange, black-bordered feathers that looks like a judge s wig. Originating from China, since the eighteenth century many have been brought to Britain as ornamental birds, so you might just be lucky enough to see one in the wild. The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 39

B1272 Fresh from the Spey (LE: 350) Height: 47.5cm Length: 24.0cm Keith Sherwin Perched high atop the treetops this osprey nest is safe from predators, being guarded by wardens and conservationists who tirelessly endeavour to protect this spectacular raptor which was once extinct from our shores but now, thankfully, breeds here again. B0987 Osprey (LE: 500) Height: 28.5cm Length: 22.5cm Capturing a spectacular moment in time, with a fish in sight, the osprey takes a dramatic dive and with a splash and a huge upward beat of the wings, this magnificent bird holds its struggling prey (on this occasion a large rainbow trout) in the powerful grip of its talons. 40 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection

The peregrine was an obvious choice as it has been the logo for Border Fine Arts since the company started in Lazy Days (20th Anniversary Symbol of Loyalty) Height: 7.5cm Length: 6.5cm This is an unfamiliar sight, a fox sitting peacefully, with not a care in the world. It looks as though he has decided to take full advantage of the sunshine by spending some quality time to take a relaxing breather, after all, it s not very often that this crafty creature gets the opportunity to enjoy lazy days. B1523 BFA IMK 2013/2014 Woody UK Height: 7.0cm Length: 4.0cm My garden is a varied landscape of lawns, flowerbeds and shrubs, with young and old established trees. Ray said. The 100-plus-year-old beeches and oaks have long attracted a wide variety of birds. One in particular can be heard at various times of the day. The hammering to remove bark and wood to get access to the grubs and insects is so distinctive and I will stand or move very quietly towards the tree in the hope of seeing the culprit. More often than not, all I get is the sight of the woodpecker in flight. The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection 41

B1476 One Up, One Down (Member-only Figurine 2013/2014) Height: 28.0cm Length: 21.0cm There s no denying that the robin is one of our best-loved native birds, and I, in particular, love to see them merrily bobbing along the patio looking for scraps, said Ray. After blue tits, the territorial robin is the most common bird in my garden. What is amazing is the aggressive defence of their territories and the strange places they sometimes choose to use as nesting sites I have found them in drainpipes, plant pots and even snuck in amongst a pile of slates and tiles. When I chose the old lamp for this new Member-only Figurine, I decided to adapt the actual item, which was a metal and glass storm candle holder, as the shape was more like the one-up-one-down terraced houses common in the area of Southampton where my grandparents lived. 42 The Border Fine Arts Classic Collection
