1 December 2015 City of Lake Dallas Newsletter City of Lake Dallas Newsletter March 2016 In This Issue Mayor's Corner Happenings at City Hall The Latest in Lake Dallas Community Events Announcements from Animal Shelter Pointers from the Police Department Important Phone Numbers Mayor's Corner Hello Fellow Citizens: Being the mayor of Lake Dallas has been an honor I never thought I would achieve. The last four years on the council has allowed me so many blessings too numerous to name. We made decisions that were hard to make. We challenged ourselves in these decisions, but in the end, I feel the decisions we made resulted in making Lake Dallas a better place to live. God has blessed Roxanne and me with five grandchildren. We are fortunate that we get to spend a lot of time with each of them. As they get older, we anticipate spending even more time with them. Rox and I are moving into a stage of life where our vocations will take less of our time and our grandchildren will be taking more and more time (we love that!!). With that said, I have decided not to run for Mayor in the upcoming election. Rox and I will continue to pray for our city and the new leadership that is coming. Our prayer will be that the decisions will come after much counsel and prayer. We are going to focus on being good citizens, and will always have Lake Dallas in our hearts. Remember, at the end of the day, who we all serve. Hate is strong, but love is stronger. -Mike McCaleb, Mayor of Lake Dallas

The Kids 'N Cops program encourages positive relationships between police officers and children. The most popular has proven to be the yearly open house and cookout that occurs on the last Saturday in April of each year. Entry forms will be available for pick-up at the Lake Dallas Library and is open to all Lake Dallas, Shady Shore and area residents who have a Lake Dallas Library Card. Announcements from the Animal Shelter Each spring brings an onslaught of animals, of all shapes and sizes, to local shelters. This is due, largely to the number of unaltered pets in our communities. Though adorable, placing puppies and kittens is an extremely tough job after the first litter of two. Do you know people who want a puppy or kitten? We don't either. Now, imagine after the first that will inundate the shelter in March and April the 20 or so more that will arrive in May and June. Add to that the "impulse adoptions" that the shelter will see because of the sheer cuteness of these animals when they are tiny. Most "impulse adoptions" are returned when the animal reaches adolescence; so the shelter is then tasked with finding an adoptive home for the same animal twice. What does all of this mean and how can you help? It means spay and neuter is IMPORTANT and SAVES LIVES. And, you can help by having your pet spayed or neutered and by advocating spay and neuter to your neighbors, friends, family and co-workers. LDAS has information on low-cost spay and neuter options and will gladly share this information with anyone willing to have their pet altered! In addition to puppies and kittens, shelters see a good number of chickens, ducks and rabbits in the weeks and months after Easter. Please give careful consideration

10 to the goodies you gift for Easter and consult the shelter about the regulations related to the keeping of these popular Easter pets and be sure you are ready to give these LIVING THINGS a forever home before you opt to pop one in an Easter basket. A little yellow chick is simply adorable, but a big crowing rooster can be a bit problematic. Pointers from the Police Department Driver Safety Tips: With construction zones on major highways and local streets, the City of Lake Dallas would like to provide citizens with some driving safety tips that could keep motorist safer during their daily commutes. Manage your speed: o Be observant of signage indicating entrances and exits of construction zones and follow the posted speed limits, especially in construction zones. Slow down when approaching work zones. o Avoid distractions within your vehicle such as cell phones or radios. o Adjust your speeds accordingly to the flow of traffic and during inclement weather. Manage your space: o Leave room for adequate braking between your vehicle and the one ahead of you and try to provide safe distances between your vehicle and barricades. In stop and go traffic, try to leave yourself an out by providing enough spacing between you and the vehicles in front of you. A simple way of determining this is asking yourself if you can see the bottom of the rear tires to the vehicle ahead of you. Check your mirrors and be aware of your surroundings in case evasive actions are necessary. Don't discourage tailgaters by slamming your brakes. This can lead to road rage incidents and can be avoided by lightly tapping the brakes which illuminate your brake lights or by simply pulling over or switching lanes to allow the motorist to pass. Pay attention to stopped vehicles and never pass on the shoulder unless directed to by workers or emergency services personnel. Manage your stress: Expect delays, there are several avenues of checking traffic conditions prior to leaving your house. Check

11 these so you can prepare yourself with alternate routes if possible or adjust your commute times. Stay calm and don't rush, everyone is suffering the same delays as you. Remember that eventually when the work is completed you will be much happier with the road improvements. PLEASE NOTE - information submitted to the Police Department via the above listed channels will not be guaranteed an immediate response. If you have an urgent need for assistance, please call the Police Department directly.
