2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission The Middlesex Pet Friends for Life organization provides a support system for the improved care of the homeless animals who are housed at the Middlesex County Animal Control (MCAC) facility. The group procures funds through public donations and supports volunteers who work at MCAC. We believe that every animal s life has value and deserves respect and protection in a safe, caring and healthy environment. Background Middlesex Pet Friends for Life began in 2002 as a means for animal-loving people to join forces to supplement the revenues available to Middlesex County, Virginia (the County) to house, feed and provide medical care for homeless animals at the Middlesex County Animal Control (MCAC) facility. These goals were seen as necessary to aid in the prevention of cruelty to animals (the Purpose). Until recently, Friends for Life was an association with no formal legal structure. In the spring of 2002, Friends for Life held a fund-raising event to provide funds with which to carry out its Purpose. Over $2,000 was raised and donated to the County with the understanding that the County would create a separate fund, the Friends for Life Fund, from which only expenses related to the Purpose could be paid. Since then, Friends for Life has raised money every year and withdrawn funds to pay medical expenses for animals housed at MCAC to cover spay/neuter, heart worm treatment, vaccines and emergency surgeries. Friends for Life has also garnered volunteers to walk dogs at the facility, foster cats and dogs and generally fulfill the Purpose by providing the animals contact with human love. In May 2013, five Middlesex County animal lovers, hearing that the Friends for Life Fund was being rapidly diminished, met to develop a plan to raise money for the Fund and attract more volunteers to assist at the MCAC facility. These volunteers called their campaign Dog Friends and ran it as an arm of Friends for Life. All funds raised through Dog Friends were deposited in the Friends for Life Fund. The Dog Friends campaign has attracted almost 300 contributors and has raised over $12,000. In addition, Dog Friends has attracted more volunteers to the MCAC facility and publicity drawn by Dog Friends has caused adoptions to increase.with these added funds and the momentum that the Dog Friends campaign has created, Friends for Life has begun to envision long-term goals to support its Purpose. Friends for Life has now been incorporated as a Virginia nonstock corporation under the name Middlesex Pet Friends for Life to procure funds and grants under tax-exempt status from the IRS. Impact Friends for Life supports the Middlesex County Animal Control facility, as follows. Our past accomplishments include:raising money for the medical needs of the animals.volunteering to work with the animals by walking and socializing with them in preparation for their forever homes.providing the funds to support as many as 5 transports a year to rescue groups in mid-atlantic and New England facilities.promoting citizen awareness through local advertisements and special events such as:an annual shelter Open House;A booth at various Farmers Markets;A Blessing of the Animals by our local clergy;educational programs at county schools;other community events and fund raisers. Goals for :Improve the environment of the shelter by establishing an additional outdoor exercise area, the Middlesex County Dog Park.Increase our outreach to additional rescue groups and facilities to place more animals through our transport program.expand our pool of volunteers to work at the shelter and foster animals in their homes.establish a network of local vets who will discount treatment for shelter animals.raise funds for the medical needs of the animals (aim for $10,000 yearly). Needs Monetary support to meet existing and future routine and emergency medical care;funding to establish a County Dog Park for pound and residents dogs;increase adoptions through events and publicity;enlarge our volunteer organization, especially for foster care;grow our network of rescue groups to expand transports to more states. 2

3 Board Chair Statement Friends for Life is truly a team effort focused on improving the well-being of those animals who come into the Middlesex County Animal Control (MCAC) facility. While I serve as Board president, each Board member is an equal partner in our mission. We embrace our challenges and celebrate our successes along with the supporters of Friends for Life. As an absolute lifetime lover of animals, I work on their behalf doing my best to see that all are cared for in a respectful manner. I have been volunteering for animals since I retired and when I realized the need at the MCAC facility, I joined as a volunteer there. I saw firsthand the necessity for more community involvement. It is my hope that through Friends for Life, the communities of Middlesex County will come together to see that every animal at MCAC receives the best care in a loving environment and ultimately finds that forever home. It is my greatest reward to know that a loving family is opening their hearts and home to one of our furry friends. Successes: Since the conception of Dog Friends (the new fundraising arm of Friends for Life) in May of 2013, we have raised approximately $12,000 for medical expenses and rescue efforts for the animals.an Open House at the MCAC facility, to which over 100 guests attended, resulted in several adoptions and improved community awareness.in less than one year, we have increased our supporters from 5 people to almost 300 people.we held our first annual Blessing of the Animals at the facility with about 50 citizens, each holding a pound animal or their own pet for the blessing by two local clergy.several articles have been published in our local newspaper reporting the needs of the animals.we have helped increase adoptions.during 2013/14, we have aided in the transport of approximately 125 canines to out-of-state rescue groups for adoption and locally adopted out 15 felines.we have obtained County government approval to build a Dog Park with private donations on County land adjacent to the shelter. Challenges: Raising sufficient funds to meet medical and general care needs of the animals.increasing our network of foster homes for both canines and felines.increasing the number of our supporters to at least 15% of county residents.raising the remaining funds to build the Dog Park.Increasing adoptions.identifying and coordinating with more rescue groups in order to place more animals.increase our volunteer base working at the shelter.increase volunteer base for special events and fund raisers.obtain local business support for publicity and donations. 4 Programs Programs Medical Needs Description Donations to Friends for Life allow animals to have heart worm testing and treatment, if needed, as rescue groups require that a dog be heart worm negative. Supplementing the County budget, we are also able to treat other routine needs such as flea infestation, mange, malnutrition and infections the animals may have when admitted. We also have an agreement with a spay/neuter clinic to alter at least one dog a week. Budget $8, Strategy Long term Success Short Term Success 100% of animals housed at the Middlesex County Animal Control facility and associated foster homes receive routine and emergency medical care in a timely manner. The Middlesex County Animal Control facility living conditions provide a healthy and clean environment for the stray dogs and cats housed there. Transport of Dogs Description On a tri-annual basis we transport approximately 25 canines to New England and/or the mid-atlantic region for adoption. Prior to transport, dogs for adoption are chosen by rescue groups and placed in local foster care for two weeks. A veterinarian provides interstate health certificates for all dogs showing required vaccines, spay/neuter status and special medical needs. Volunteers drive the transport vans. Budget $3, Strategy Long term Success Short Term Success Stray dogs and cats picked up by Middlesex County Animal Control personnel are, within a reasonable amount of time, transported out of the county to rescue groups and Humane Societies instead of being euthanized. Animals chosen for transport are required to spend at least two weeks in a foster home before leaving the county. This frees up space in the pound for new admitances. 4

5 Angel Fund Description The cost of emergency medical care such as surgery, for which no funds are available, is covered by Friends for Life supporters who are called upon to make Angel Donations. A "phone tree" system is in place for contacting these members. Budget $1, Strategy Long term Success Short Term Success Animals admitted to or housed at the Middlesex County Animal Control facility receive emergency medical care when county funds are unavailable. No animal in the facility or a foster home waits an unreasonable length of time for emergency medical treatment. Foster Care Description In order to socialize and train animals for adoption, dogs are placed in private homes prior to transport or local adoption. Expenses for food, medical care, bedding, pens, etc. are provided by Friends for Life. The foster families provide the TLC. Budget $2, Strategy Long term Success Short Term Success Fostering dogs and cats gives the animals valuable experience in a home environment learning manners and how to get along with people and other animals. Fostering animals frees up space in the Middlesex County Animal Control facility for new admitances. Dog Park Description Middlesex County has given Friends for Life permission to build a Dog Park on County-owned land adjacent to the Middlesex County Animal Control (MCAC) facility. We are conducting a capital campaign to obtain the funding for the project through private donations, grant money, etc. To date we have accrued approximately $13,500 of the estimated $15,000 needed. We are conducting the ongoing campaign to raise the remaining funds from County businesses, private citizens and through grants. The Dog Park will provide an area for citizens to bring their dogs as well as a separate area for MCAC volunteers to exercise pound dogs. Budget $15, Strategy Long term Success Short Term Success When the Dog Park is completed, it will be a unique place on the Middle Peninsula of Virginia for citizens to bring their dogs for exercise and the Middlesex County pound volunteers to socialize and exercise the dogs. While the dogs wait for their new play area, the community is working together to raise the funds for the Dog Park and the Friends for Life organization is in the process of attaining their IRS 501(c)(3) status. It is an undertaking supported by a great many people that is creating awareness for our shelter dogs and their needs. 5

10 Organization Comments Having enough money to properly take care of the stray animals that end up in the Middlesex County Animal Control facility is our biggest challenge and we have so far addressed this by continually asking for support from county residents whether in the way of direct donations or by putting on events or attending events where we can raise money. Having 501(c)(3) status for Friends for Life will give us a new tool to raise the funds we need to enlarge and fund our programs.
