Health and Wellness Trust A Deadly Disease Author Unknown There is a deadly disease stalking your dog, a hideous, stealthy thing just waiting its chance to steal your beloved friend. It is not a new disease, or one for which there are inoculations. The disease is called Trust. You knew before you ever took your puppy home that it could not be trusted. The breeder, who provided you with this precious animal warned you, drummed it into your head. Puppies steal anything in sight, destroy anything expensive, chase cats, take forever to house train, and must NEVER be allowed off lead!! When the big day finally arrived, heeding the sage advice of the breeder, you escorted your puppy to his new home, properly collared, the lead held tightly in your hand. At home, the house was puppy-proofed. Everything of value was stored in the spare bedroom, garbage stowed on top of the refrigerator, cats separated, and a gate placed across the living room to keep at least one part of the house puddle free. All windows and doors had been properly secured and signed placed in all strategic points to remind all to Close the Door! Soon it becomes second nature to make sure the door closes nine tenths of a second after it was opened, and that it is really latched. Don t let the dog out is your second most verbalized expression. (The first is NO!) You worry and fuss constantly, terrified that your darling will get out and disaster will surely follow. Your friends comment about who you love most, your family or the dogs. You know that to relax your vigil for a moment might lose him to you forever. And so the weeks and months pass, with your puppy becoming more civilized every day, and the seeds of trust are planted. It seems that each new day brings less destruction, less breakage. Almost before you know it, your gangly, slurpy puppy has turned into an elegant dignified friend. Now that he is more reliable and sedate as a companion, you take him more places. No longer does he chew the steering wheel when left in the car. And darned if the cake wasn t still on the counter this morning? And, Oh yes, wasn t that the cat he was sleeping with so cozily on your pillow last night? At this point, you are beginning to become infected. The disease is spreading its roots deep into your mind. - 3

And then one of your friends suggests obedience classes, and after a time you even let him run loose from the car into the house when you get home. Why not, he always runs straight to the door, dancing a frenzy of joy and waits to be let in. And, remember he comes every time he is called. You know he is the exception that disproves the rule. (And sometimes late at night, you even let him slip out the front door to go potty and then right back in.) Years pass. It is hard to remember why you ever worried so much when he was a puppy. He would never think of running out the door left open while you bring in the packages from the car. It would be beneath his dignity to jump out the window of the car while you run into the convenience store. And when you take him for those wonderful long walks at dawn, it only takes one whistle to send him racing back to you in a burst of speed when the walk comes too close to the highway. (He still gets in the garbage, but nobody is perfect!) The time the disease has waited so patiently. Sometimes it only has to wait a year or two, but often it takes much longer. He spied the neighbor dog across the street, and suddenly forgets everything he ever knew about no slipping out doors, jumping out windows or coming when called due to traffic. Perhaps, it was only a paper fluttering in the breeze, or even just the sheer joy of running.. Stopped in an instant, stilled forever Your heart is broken at the sight of his still beautiful body. The disease is trust, the final outcome, hit by a car. Every morning my dog bounced around off lead exploring. Every morning for seven years he came back when he was called. He was perfectly obedient, perfectly trustworthy. He died fourteen hours after being hit by a car. Please do not risk your friend and your heart. Save the trust for the things that do not matter. Please read this every year on your puppy s birthday, lest we forget. - 4

Pass It On A blessing Story Overall, this has been a lucky year for the Bates household. So what does one do with good luck? Pass it on! After winning the raffle for the painting donated by the Bufkins,I thought "Woo-hoo!" - then "Where will I hang it?" A few months later, while discussing the boutique/raffles/auctions for next year's show, I suggested donating it f or one of those purposes. Sandy mentioned that Harry and Rita had hoped to win the painting because the wheaten looked exactly like their Maizie (the leather chair and ottoman in the picture matches the one in their house too!). The difficult part was arranging to surprise the Adlers. It all worked out at the November meeting, which Rita and I both attended. Now it's Rita's turn to surprise Harry. She planned to sneak it into the house and see how long it takes him to notice it. - 7

Bufkin Portrait 9/11/2012 Prince, Bogey, Rokko, Abbey, Star, Rugby New Oil on canvas that Bill Simmons put together for Harry Bufkin. This could be his best yet. Bill s new web can do this, along with stamps, mouse pads, greeting cards and much much more. If you have a history with Bill and your dogs, just dream at what you can create in their memory. To contact Bill Simmons you can Harry Bufkin for more information. - 8

In Loving Memory Our dear friend, Ginny Bufkin left this world April 27, She is reunited with all the beloved Scotties at the bridge that she missed with all her heart; she has also met so many of her human loved ones and is rejoicing in the arms of our Lord and Savior. She was a treasured friend, a sister to many of us, a huge advocate of Scottish terriers and a wonderful Scottie mom and wife to Harry. God bless you Harry. Our oldest member, who was also among the first to join the STCGD upon its founding, Helen Harbulak has passed away at age 91 on October 25, 2012 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House after a long illness. She was currently an honorary member of both the STCA and the Dayton club, as well as a member of the Pittsburgh club and the Huntington Kennel Club. A story about her appeared this past year in the Bagpiper, and several years ago in our Scots Chatter, starting with discovering her love of Scottish Terriers, her developing her showing to winning Best of Opposite sex at the STCA Specialty in Pennsylvania, and followed to her recent life with her rescue Scottie, Michael. Michael is now in the home of her very good friend. Heaven gets another Angel, Jim Newton who passed away this past November. Jim had not been well for the last couple of years. Jim and Donna were the co-founders of Wee Scots that is now known as Cincinnatiscottyfriends which holds the annual collectible gathering in June of each year. We know of no one that treasured our dear Scottish Terriers more than Jim and Donna, be it through collectibles or the real life furkids. We know that God has opened his arms wide to receive one of his finest Angel. Blessings be to Donna who was Jim s caregiver for the last many years. Amen! From Gary and Kim Stroede IN LOVING MEMORY OF CH Wild Wind Trouble Maker "Torrie" September 8, 2000 September 2, 2012 Torrie will be deeply missed. - 9

From Gary and Kim Stroede IN LOVING MEMORY OF Wild Wind Sweet Revenge "Reva" January 31, 2002 September 2, 2012 Reva will be deeply missed. From Harry Bufkin Star (Vicarscots My Shining Star) crossed to the Rainbow Bridge on 9/19/2012 at 7:00PM. She will be very much missed in the Carolinascots family. She was the Queen and her desires had to be met on her terms. What a wonderful example of Gaidoune/Vicarscots blood line. The old Scotch that had attitude and plenty of pizzas. A Beautiful Brindle. Star is now reunited with Ginny and the two will be crossing the Rainbow Bridge together. Wish I had a camera and a photo of that wonderful site. The Two that loved each other more than life itself. Star had a cancer that the mass of which had enveloped the upper heart, the air tubes/thorax to the stomach and lungs and comfort was only oxygen and life support. She grieved herself over the loss of her much loved Ginny. Now they are united forever! - 10

From Harry Bufkin It is with deep sadness that I advise you of the passing of Brody to the Rainbow Bridge. Brody was at the last gathering this fall and Cathy held him in her arms most of the time. He will be missed by all his scottie brothers and sisters and by his human, Cathy Chapin. Brody was at the last gathering this fall and Cathy held him in her arms most of the time. Brody and Cathy was the Foster for my Rokko when he was in the NCSate School of Vet. Med. Cathy brought Rokko to us. Thanks Cathy. Happy Tails Short Stories Inspirational Bo: Training at Camp Christi Living with Christi must have been like a camp experience for Bo; so we dubbed her place Camp Christi. For two weeks, Bo slept and napped in his own crate in a bunk room with other crated dogs-a far cry from his lonely crawlspace under a shed. His first time in the yard, Bo walked around in a large circle as if he were chained to the tree while his bunk buddies romped and played. By his second time out, he ran the entire area. During his stay, Bo received some good home training. Christi, an obedience instructor, taught him to sit, stay, come and walk on a leash. She sent us progress reports by . The first one read: Bo is a bright little boy. He doesn t guard his food bowl or possessions, doesn t have a temperament problem, and he gets along well with other dogs. I am very encouraged by his enthusiasm and willingness to learn. And he loves getting fed on a regular basis. He has a big heart in spite of what he s been through and loves to be with people. Being tied out must have been hard on him emotionally. - 11

Christi trained Bo to sit and come using small pieces of a hot dog as a reward, then she took him to one of her obedience classes to learn how to walk on a loose leash and be petted by others. Bo s leash training revealed the extent of his trachea damage. She wrote, Initially we worked on just staying beside me. He tried desperately to understand but could only take a few steps before he started pulling at full strength again. The poor little guy was exhausted after a few minutes. For the next session, she connected the leash to his collar and let him drag it around. At first, he took off full bolt, but when he realized there was nothing to pull against, he settled right into playing. She worked him up and down the hallway dragging his leash while she praised him and gave him treats, and of course she sent us progress reports. Bo s leash training progressed with daily walks to the mailbox and less pulling each time. His second report card sounded like he had loosened up a lot: This little guy loves to play with a tennis ball. When the ball was thrown, he wound up with it a good bit of the time. He doesn t bring it back. He trots along with it in his mouth and teases the other dogs. He has put on a couple of pounds and is starting to look healthier. Christi let Bo in her house to acclimate him to indoor living and to housebreak him. It didn t take long. The first two times Bo started to sniff around and get himself into position to hike his leg, Christi walked him to the door and let him out. After that, when he needed to go, he walked around in a small circle. He had no accidents in the house, but he always wanted Christi to go out with him. Christi s strength and courage to rescue, love and train helpless Springers epitomizes the role of a foster mom. She said, We want the next home for our rescues to be their last, and we are committed to doing all we can to ensure they are on their way to being good companions when they are placed. That s exactly what we wanted for Bo. We wanted to be his next home and promised it would be his last. Christi did for Bo what God does for us. He rescues us from the ways of the world; trains us to be good companions for Him; and shapes us with love, a gentle hand, and a promise to come get us and takes us to the eternal home He has prepared for us. Now it was time for us to take Bo home and fulfill our promise to him. Linda Hultin Winn My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart. If you do this, you will live many years, and your life will be satisfying. Proverbs 3:1-2 NLT - 12

Rescue News Who's Who in Rescue; or a brief rundown of the Scotties recently moving through the STCGD rescue program. Many of you know about the two litter mates, John Dewey and William James, who were surrendered by their owner when she was faced with more surgeries and realized she wouldn't be able to care for them. Both Boys have found a new home with STCGD's secretary, Sue Stacy. Sue has reported that they made themselves at home immediately and act like they've never lived anywhere else. Dewey and Jamie will celebrate their fifth birthdays on Christmas Eve, so let's wish them a happy birthday and many more with Sue. The Columbus shelter stray taken in by Melanie Myers a couple of months ago is making good progress with his medical problem and should be ready for placement soon. Barney Fife is a Scottie mix who is sweet and good natured and will make a loving addition to someone's family. On Dec 9, a woman in Columbus is driving her 12 year old female Scottie to Cheryl in Dayton to surrender her. Rosie spent the first four years of her life as a breeder. She is in good health and still very lively at the age of 12 and although she has a few issues, will fit in perfectly with an older individual or couple. Who will adopt a 12 year old Scot? Surprisingly, it has not been difficult to place senior Scotties. Maybe Rosie will get her Christmas wish - a forever home surrounded with love. Thank you everyone for supporting STCGD Rescue.
