ACTFAnewsletter@yahoo.com PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Dear Fanciers: Hope all had a great 4 th of July and a good spring. The ACTFA is busy moving forward; in the next few months we will be applying to become a Member Club. As a Member Club we will be able to choose one of our members to be a Delegate to AKC and will be able to attend AKC Delegate meetings and learn the ins and outs of AKC. If AKC is taking a vote on something, our Delegate will come back to us, ask our opinion, and take our vote to AKC. This process has taken over 26 years and is now nearing completion. We have many events for all members to take part in and enjoy: Conformation, Barn Hunts, Agility, Obedience, Canine Good Citizen, Lure Coursing and a new one from AKC Trick Dog. AKC is trying to get pet owners involved in the activities without having to do conformation. On October 8th, 2017 we will be having our Second National Specialty. Our Judge will be John Constantine, who has been judging Ceskys for years and was on the survey of judges. We cannot thank him enough for agreeing to be our Judge for this Specialty. Our Sweeps Judge will be Ms. Joan Gorden Murko. Ms. Murko has been involved with the Cesky s for many years and was on our CBL Continued on page

Continued from page 1... standard committee. She helped with presenting our papers to AKC for Licensing. The host hotel is the same as last year, and a news blast should be going out with all the information. The Show Committee is doing an outstanding job and I am hoping all members will donate to the Trophies. We are proud to have put on two successful Roving Specialties this year at Purina Farms. Next year our Roving Specialty will be held in California. More will follow in the next newsletter. I am thrilled at how many people know what a Cesky is. People now say Oh, a Cesky Terrier! instead of ask me if they are Schnauzers. Have a safe enjoyable summer, hoping to see many in October. 3 Purina Farms Venue Proves A Blast for ACTFA Members Additional Sites Planned for 2017 For those who complain that no ACTFA attended dog shows or ACTFA sponsored fun and frivolity is conducted in places other than the east coast, you missed a blast at Purina Farms in Grey Summit, Missouri, June 1 through June 5. Besides missing one of the best venues in America, naysayers ignored invitations to an ACTFA sponsored dinner, lost the opportunity to feast at after match get togethers, and wasted the opportunity to attend five days of great shows put on by the Gateway Terrier Association, the Mississippi Valley Kennel Club, and the Missouri Rhineland Kennel Club. A special thank you to our host Karen Hynek for all her assistance in arranging for ACTFA to conduct a Judges Education Seminar and a double thank you to ACTFA members Nick and Doreen Fletcher for prizes from Purina Farms and late show starts. Imagine sleeping in at a dog show! Also, a thank you to Linda Comer for dinner arrangements. We congratulate the Leubbers on Quincy s Championship; Tim Smith on multiple breed wins and Julie Gritten for a grand slam (multiple wins on Saturday.) Please see the AKC website for complete details on show wins and more info and photos in this newsletter. We would be remiss if we did not mention the Annual Cesky Terrier Purina Farms photo. In previous years ACTFA has built a tradition for Cesky photos at Purina. Our first year, 4-5 Ceskys appeared in the photo; year two saw 6-7; and year three we had 9. Last year we managed to corral 12. This year we had 21 entrants in the matches and the total number in the photo is still uncertain but believed to top 17. One judge was heard to remark, I never knew there were this many Ceskys in America. Stacked against the Montgomery County Kennel Club s show last October in which 35 Ceskys appeared, this was the second biggest event in ACTFA history. Opportunities still abound for those uninitiated to get on board. Upcoming shows for ACTFA consideration include: *If you are encouraged to compete for a Canadian Kennel Club Championship there is always St. Catharine s on the south shore of Lake Ontario. Cesky friends Dann Wilson, Duncan Ritchie and Mike Barnes will be glad to show you the sites of Niagaraon-the-Lake as well as introduce you to excellent cuisine. St. Catherine s is August 18 through the 20 th. *Southern hospitality can be had at Lexington, Kentucky August 31 through September 4. *Devon, Hatboro and Montgomery County near Philadelphia are October 5 through the 8th. The year concludes in Orlando December 16 and 17th. Other shows of note include: Topeka, Kansas, August 18 through 21. A wonderful and stellar venue. Walk out the front door of the hotel and into the arena. The hotel offers excellent cuisine. Greensboro, North Carolina August 16 through 20. If you think Missouri BBQ Ribs are great; eat here! Owensboro, Kentucky August 24 through 27. While not technically on the Bourbon Trail getting this close makes everyone happy! Visit us at 3 Continued on page 4...

2017 ACTFA C&BL VOTE The ACTFA voting membership stepped up to the plate in voting to accept the revised ACTFA Constitution and Bylaws (C&BL). Ex-Vice president Joan Murko and Dennis Loy had spent over two years reviewing and revising the C&BL and corresponding with the AKC before arriving at the time when AKC approved the revised C&BL, allowing it to be voted upon by the ACTFA membership. Asking the voting membership to read and compare the old and new C&BL was, understandably, a necessary hardship needed to arrive at a consensus to accept the new C&BL. On behalf of the ACTFA Officers and Board, a heartfelt THANK YOU is sent to all voting members who attempted and then pursued the task. Survey Monkey was the selected voting process, and an impressive 65% of eligible voting members offered their votes. 84% of the responding members voted to accept the new C&BL. The new version is available to all members on the ACTFA website. Any questions or comments on the process or the document can always be shared with a Board member. They will share the name and comments with all Board members at the next scheduled meeting. This process is the only way those elected to lead the ACTFA can do so in-step with the desires of the membership. The ACTFA needs a continually involved membership so the Cesky Terrier is best represented and understood in the larger dog universe. 5

Canine Influenza Virus Notice Dr. Jerry Klein, Chief Veterinary Officer of AKC May 31, 2017 This notice is being sent out to provide up-to-date and accurate information about the Canine Influenza Virus to help prevent the spread of the virus to healthy (unexposed) dogs. The information provided is not intended to alarm dog owners and handlers. There are recently confirmed cases of the Canine Influenza Virus (H3N2 strain) that was first brought to and identified in Chicago, Illinois in the spring of The most recent outbreaks concern the following states: Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas. Canine Influenza Virus is an extremely contagious airborne disease that is easily spread among dogs, and in rare instances, can be contagious to cats. If you believe one of your dogs may have contracted the Canine Influenza Virus, immediately isolate it from other animals and contact your veterinarian. Here is some additional information about Canine Influenza Virus and tips for how to minimize the risk and reduce the spread of the disease: Canine Influenza Virus is spread through: Close proximity to infected dogs (it is airborne and can travel up to 20 ft.) Contact with contaminated items (bowls, leashes, crates, tables, clothing, dog runs, etc.) People moving between infected and uninfected dogs 80% of all dogs that are exposed to the virus will contract it. The virus lives up to 24 hours on soft surfaces and up to 48 hours on hard surfaces. Some exposed dogs will be subclinical carriers - meaning some dogs will contract and spread the virus without showing symptoms. Dogs show clinical signs within hours and can shed the virus for up to 28 days from exposure. Most dogs will completely recover with proper treatment. Dogs that regularly interact with dogs outside of their own family or frequent places where many dogs gather are most susceptible to exposure to Canine Influenza Virus. Symptoms Dry, hacking cough (similar to kennel cough) Lack of appetite Lethargy Discharge from the nose or eyes Fever (normal temperature is ) Prevention The best protection is vaccination. There is now a single vaccination for both the H3N2 and H3N8 strains of the virus. The vaccination requires a booster shot two weeks after the initial vaccine. Vaccination provides the best chance of immunity within 7-14 days of booster shot. Isolate sick animals and keep them isolated for up to 30 days after symptoms appear. Practice good sanitation. Use a bleach and water mixture diluted to 1-part bleach x 30 parts water to disinfect common areas such as tables, bowls, leashes, crates, etc. Allow items to thoroughly air dry for a minimum of 10 minutes before exposing dogs to them. Bleach breaks down quickly so solution should be made daily. Keep in mind that bleach becomes inactive in UV light. If mopping use two buckets so as not to cross contaminate areas Wash your hands frequently, ideally between handling different dogs. At the very minimum, hand sanitizer should be used between handling dogs. Use disposable gowns or wipe down clothing and shoes with a bleach solution between dogs or after leaving an area where dogs congregate. Food/water bowls should be made of stainless steel instead of plastic because scratched plastic is hard to fully disinfect. Use a bleach and water mixture diluted to 1-part bleach x 30 parts water to disinfect common areas including show floors, grooming tables, ring gates, in-ring examination tables and ramps, and x-pens. Allow solution to completely dry (at least ten minutes in order to assure virus has been killed). Bleach breaks down 6 Continued on page 7...

Continued from page 6... quickly so solution should be made daily. Keep in mind that bleach becomes inactive in UV light. If mopping use two buckets so as not to cross contaminate areas. When wiping down hard surfaces paper towels are preferred over cloth. Consider having two exam tables at every ring so that they can be cleaned and allowed to air dry frequently in between classes. Provide hand sanitizer in each ring and in grooming areas. Exhibitors should consider grooming dogs at their cars instead of using grooming areas where dogs are in very close proximity. Exhibitors should consider grooming dogs at their cars instead of using grooming areas where dogs are in very close proximity. Treatment Treatment of Canine Influenza Virus requires veterinary assistance. If you believe your dog may have Canine Influenza Virus, please contact your veterinarian immediately. Untreated, the illness may progress to pneumonia or other, more serious problems. H3N2 can lead to severe secondary pneumonia which can cause extremely sick dogs with potential fatalities. Most dogs take 2-3 weeks to recover from the illness. Any dog suspected of having Canine Influenza Virus should be immediately isolated from other dogs and should not attend dog shows, day care, grooming facilities, dog parks, or other places dogs gather. Dogs are contagious for up to 30 days once they have started showing symptoms. Contact your veterinarian to let them know that your dog may be showing symptoms of Canine Influenza Virus. If your dog is going to a veterinary hospital or clinic, call ahead to let them know you have a suspected case of Canine Influenza Virus. They may ask you to follow a specific protocol before entering the clinic to minimize the spread of the disease, including waiting in your car until they are ready to examine your dog. Keep sick dogs at home and isolated from other dogs and cats until you are certain the illness has run its course (typically 3-4 weeks). Containment Any dog suspected of having Canine Influenza Virus should be immediately isolated from other dogs and should not attend dog shows, day care, grooming facilities, dog parks, or other places dogs gather. Dogs are contagious for up to 30 days once they have started showing symptoms. Consideration for Event Venues Use a bleach and water mixture diluted to 1-part bleach x 30 parts water to disinfect common areas including show floors, grooming tables, ring gates, inring examination tables and ramps, and x-pens. He was personally involved in treating hundreds of dogs sickened by the H3N2 virus during its initial outbreak in Chicago in spring of

Don t Miss St. Catharine s St. Catharine s is one of the premiere dog show events of the Canadian dog showing season. Ceskys abound. The competition is excellent and a Canadian Championship is a resume builder. Just ask Tim Smith, Bob Comer, Nick Fletcher and others. In years past, ACTFA members have also had the special privilege of having critiques done of their dogs by recognized European experts. Additionally, Canadian breeders take special interest in showing us how to groom and present the Cesky Terrier. Yet, the real interest after the competition is how the Canadians can out-do themselves in showing us a good time. Even if you do not show, St. Catharine s is worth the trip. The venue is outdoors and we have never known the sun not to shine. Additionally, the near-at-hand Niagara-on-the-Lake is a mecca for shopping and dining. Then, there is the always gracious Dann Wilson, the ever-knowledgeable Duncan Ritchie, and the warm and friendly Mike Barnes; all current or past ACTFA members. They will make sure your visit north is memorable. St. Catharine s is August Rooms are still available for those in the know at the distinguished Hotel Ritchie. Call Duncan Ritchie for inquiries. A current passport is required for you to cross the border. For your Cesky, all that is necessary is an up-to-date health record and a valid Rabies vaccination. (Please verify this information as specifics may change.) Currently, the exchange rate is very favorable and you can expect to pay about 75 cents for a Canadian dollar. Make sure you change currency at the border or at a Canadian Bank. Restaurateurs and retails will charge you one to one. Did we mention the Falls, the Butterfly Garden and Lake Ontario? For entry information and closing date, please contact the Canadian Kennel Club. 9 Young Cesky male who likes walks on the beach, listening to Mozart and excels in gourmet eating seeking Cesky female interested in String Theory, rock climbing and gourmet eating; object intelligent, athletic puppies interested in gourmet eating.
